Itunes library.itl won't open
I upgraded to Mountain Lion and my iTunes wouldn't open: the error was that Itunes Library.itl was written by a newer version of iTunes (ML ships with 10.5.3 but I'd already upgraded my time machine based mac to 10.6.3). When I did the "Check for updates" 10.5.3 was listed as being up to date. It turns out that Apple is still not pushing 10.6.3 thru the Update utility. Went on to try and download the latest version and discovered another difference from Lion: the dowload progress box is a tiny little thing in the corner of the Safari window, not the slider box that used to show up, so I didn't realize that the software was downloading. And since it didn't automatically mount a disk, I had to go to my download folder to figure that out....
Now, you could just rename the iTunes Library.itl file something else and iTunes will find all your music, but it won't include your ratings or number of plays (which I actually use), so that's not a happy solution.
Once I figured out that the download was happening and where, mounted it and installed it, it worked just fine. Bottom line, if you're using Time Machine from an up to date Mac and installing Mountain Lion, you'll likely have to manually download and install iTunes 10.6.3!
I should have mentioned, this was a refurbed Imac 27 from late last year, so it shipped with 10.5.3 apparently.

I cannot open itunes. Getting error message: "the file iTunes library.itl cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes"
What do I need to do so I dont lose all my loaded music, etc.?
ThanksIf you still have an issue you may have to see about using the iTunes version (application) included with Snow Leopard 10.6 from the installer or an another one if available online, and see if that will install.
Sometimes you may have uninstall the bits left in your system by the earlier (or later) iTunes installers; as they all leave a trace and these can stop a different version of iTunes from being installed.
Not sure if the following site/link will tell the method...

How do i install Itunes on my windows(7) PC? i followed the guidelines issued outlined by Apple in KB TS5376 but i keep getting the message, the file "itunes library.itl" cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of itunes. what steps must i follow to install?
If you've already installed the latest version then the message may be a sign of a corrupt library. See Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash.

ITunes Library.itl becomes corrupt very often
I very often run into the same trouble.
After working on my iTunes Mediathek (adding covers etc.) I close iTunes and it is not possible to open it again.
It comes up with the error "iTunes Library.itl cannot be opened".
After rebuilding the iTunes Library.itl from the iTunes Library.xml it works for a while and then the problem appears again.
Sometimes iTunes creates a lot of "Temp File xx.tmp" files. In this case it is possible to rename the latest temp-file into iTunes Library.itl and iTunes works again.
This problem costs me hours of work.
It did not happen with iTunes 10.7; just since I updated to iTunes 11.
Does anybody have an idea?
I use iTunes 11.0.1 on OSX 10.8.2 on MBP 15" late 2008.
Thanks in advanceThe problem is solved.
iTunes will start to build "Temp File xx.tmp"-files if there would be a problem to write to the harddrive.
After checking and repairing my disk I renamed the latest of the "Temp File xx.tmp" into iTunes Library.itl & iTunes Library.xml (corresponding to the file size)!
And what should I say? iTunes is running stable, no more "Temp File xx.tmp"-files and no problems in starting iTunes again and again.
I hope this will help if some of you have the same problems!

I have mp4 movie files that i am trying to transfer to my ipad and it will no longer work. They will not copy to my iTunes library. I used to be able to transfer/drag and drop converted movies to my iTunes are the mp4 files maybe too big Although I have plenty of space
Howdy Anastasia,
I was thinking about why the songs arent importing and I feel that its either, A) the format of the files has changed since you last imported them, or B) you may need to rebuild the iTunes library.
Here is an article about doing just that:
iTunes: How to re-create your iTunes library and playlists
http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1451
Re-creating the iTunes Library file
Note: After re-creating your library, any devices that you sync with iTunes (Apple TV, iPod, iPhone, iPad) will see your iTunes library as a new library and will completely resync. The next sync with such a device will take longer and may reset some options since your rebuilt library isn't familiar to the device.
1. Quit iTunes.
2. Locate your iTunes folder (this is the folder that contains the iTunes Library and iTunes Library.xml files).
Operating System
Default location of iTunes Folder
Mac OS X
/Users/[your username]/Music
Microsoft Windows XP
\Documents and Settings\[your username]\My Documents\My Music\
Microsoft Windows Vista
\Users\[your username]\Music\
Microsoft Windows 7
\Users\[your username]\My Music\
3. Open your iTunes folder.
4. Drag the "iTunes Library.xml" or "iTunes Music Library.xml" file to the Desktop. If neither is available, learn how to add files back to the Library (because the XML file is not available, playlists and other information will not be available).
5. Drag the following file from your iTunes folder to the Trash:
Mac OS X
"iTunes Library" or "iTunes Library.itl"
Microsoft Windows
"iTunes Library.itl"
6. Open iTunes.
Important: Do not add any content into iTunes at this point (such as by purchasing something from the iTunes Store).
7. Choose File > Library > Import Playlist.
8. Navigate to the "iTunes Library.xml" file on the Desktop.
Mac users: Click Choose.
Windows users: Click Open.
If your Podcasts list in iTunes is empty after following these steps, learn how to add them back into iTunes.

iTunes won't open.
I get this message: The iTunes Library .itl file is locked, on a locked disk or you do not have write permission for this file. This may indicate a corrupt preference file with iTunes trying to open the wrong location. Try holding down shift as you launch iTunes then choose the correct file, normally <User's Music>\iTunes\iTunes Library.itl. See iTunes: How to open an alternate iTunes Library file or create a new one.

My iTunes won't open and I am getting message "the file iTunes library .itl"cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes. Anyone have a suggestion?
I don't know why this error occurs, unless you have attempted to downgrade iTunes.
This method should get you up and running again.
Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash
Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps you shouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping. In the Previous iTunes Libraries folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename iTunes Library.itl as iTunes Library (Corrupt).itl and then rename the restored file as iTunes Library.itl. Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.
See iTunes Folder Watch for a tool to catch up with any changes since the backup file was created.
When you get it all working make a backup!

My iTunes won't open! It keeps saying 'The iTunes Library.itl is locked on a locked disk or you not have write permission for this file.' Please Help!
this may happen on external drives if:
The external drive was hotpluged (removed) without going the correct "eject" way
The iTunes library (database) got corrupted
First Aid for external drive
Close iTunes
Unmount (eject) external drive the right way.
Mount drive again
Go to Workplace -> right click external drive -> choose "clean up" This will force the filesystem to rescan the file structure of the drive and rebuilding the file system table and journaling file.
After the tool shows "done" (could last some time depending on size of drive) restart iTunes
If your iTunes library is on your internal drive, this may happen
The system was not shoot down correct, e.g. "pulled the plug"
The iTunes library (database) got corrupted
First Aid for internal hard drive
Close iTunes
Reboot system
Go to Workplace -> right click external drive -> choose "clean up"
After the tool shows "done" (could last some time depending on size of drive)
Reboot system, restart iTunes
If none of the above fixes your problem, post here.

new iTunes won't open. Error says cant read iTunes Library.itl becuase it was created by a newer version of iTunes.
I had just installed iTunes 10.3.1 as was instructed by the Genius at the store.I don't know how you received an upgrade for iTunes. You make it sound like it was sent to you. At most your computer will tell you of a new version and you tell it to download it and install it. However, a computer will not do this for a version which is incompatible. iTunes 10.7 came out a few weeks ago but your computer would not notify you and even if it did, 10.7 would refuse to install on your computer. So this part isn't making a lot of sense.
Two ways to get the 'newer version' message. One is to open your library on a computer running a newer version, and then try to open it with an older version. Usually happens when the library is on an external and used with multiple computers. The second way is if you have multiple versions of itunes installed on your computer.
The newest (and likely the last) iTunes for OSX 10.5.8 is iTunes 10.6.3 which has been out for quite a while.
