Itunes library locked!!

Hi everyone, I'm currently getting the following message when I try to launch itunes; "The itunes library is locked, or a locked disk, or you do not have write permission for this file"
This is what I did...I recently installed a 2nd harddrive and mapped my itunes library to it. That was over a week ago, and things have been fine. Last night I hooked my ipod (3rd gen) to the computer and it had issues recognizing it, but then it did, and it told me to restore..so I said OK...then itunes crashed, and I can't get on or launch it without this message.
I checked under my other user account on the computer and there aren't any problems....I did recently remap that user as well to the new itunes library without any problems....any ideas?
Thanks,
Tom

Not in iTunes, in Finder. Copy the entire iTunes folder from the PC so it is on the hard drive. Take the hard drive to the Mac, plug it in, and drag the iTunes folder from there to somewhere on your Mac.  if you do not currently have anything in iTunes on the Mac, drag it over and replace the one called "iTunes Folder' in Music on the Mac.  If you do have something there then for now copy the iTunes folder to somewhere else.  If you do end up replacing the one in the Music folder, simply start iTunes on the Mac. If you put it somewhere else hold down the option key while starting iTunes and guide it to wherever you put the copied folder.  All this is assuming you have used iTunes' default preferences so everything is nicely packaged inside the iTunes folder. If you have used other settings then you need to tell us (preferably when you first post).  For the time being there is nothing you should be doing inside iTunes and in particular do not alter with the preferences settings because those do not tell iTunes to do what you want to be doing right now (and many posts on the Internet get it wrong).

  • ITunes Library Locked on External Hard Drive after Updating to 10.8.2

Hello.  I just updated my iMac to 10.8.2.  My iTunes library is located on an external hard drive attached to the iMac.  After the update, I tried to open iTunes and I get an error saying that the iTunes library is on a locked disk or I don't have permissions for the folder?  Everything worked before the update.  Has this happened to any

  • Snow Leopard and iTunes 9 upgrade now iTunes library locked

I am not sure what may have caused this, but must be one of the two upgrades, Snow Leopard or iTunes9.
The library is stored in one of the two users Home directory in the usual music folder.
Previously both users have been able to access the music, now only one can.
The permissions on the library and all folders within give full read write access to all users
Yet when ever I try and open iTunes I get the Itunes Library is locked message
Two other libraries within that users Music folder are accessable and Get Info shows the same permisions.

It was a permissions problem causing it.
Get Info and the Sharing And Permissions section did not show it up.
File Examiner (http://www.gideonsoftworks.com/filexaminer.html) shoed the problem with the permissions and allowed me to give the files the correct permissions again.
From what I have been reading, the whole permission 'system' under Leopard seems to be a bit screwy anway. File Examiner seems good in that it shows you the 'real' file system permissions and not the 'user friendly' meaningless name Leopard gives.

  • Itunes library locked!!!! new mac user please help!!!!!!

i just got a new macbook pro.. i was transferring my music from an external hardrive to the itunes library, i have a lot of music, itunes stopped working so i forced it quit, and now when i try to open itunes i get this message that the itunes folder is locked or in a locked disk and i don't have permission to access it... What can i do??? im a new mac user.... please help!!!

    Di you get this fixed?
You could try changing the permissions of the file/folder where the iTunes library is stored
    It ''may' work
Find where the library is probably within the Music folder of your users home folder. Right click it and then Get Info
Go to the the Sharing and Permissions section at the bottom and make sure your user has rear write permissions. If not click the padlock change it, click the gear wheel and then apply to enclosing items, and OK.
I think that worked for me last time this happened...although I have now just upgraded to Snow Leopard, and the problem has just re occured and it has not worked this time. Maybe a re boot will help
You could also go to the Disk Utility (type Disk Utility in Spotlight) and try a repair permissions and Repair Disk

  • ITunes Library Locked warning

Help! Itunes was working just fine on my PC a week ago, and yesterday I tried to open it on my desktop (and from every other itunes icon I could find) and I got this warning: "The iTunes Library.itl file is locked, on a locked disk, or you do not have write permission for this file."
My computer is the home base for iTunes. I made sure all of my kids' computers were turned off, so I know noone else was accessing my library via our network.
I tried downloading version 10 and hit the "repair" icon. I tried this a couple times, but still no success. Same warning pops up.
I'm wondering if when I download version 10 I should hit "remove program" instead, and then try reinstalling it? I'm just afraid to remove itunes without knowing that my extensive library of songs and apps will not just disappear. Can someone help me out!!!

    Try a shift-start of itunes.
Press *AND HOLD* the shift key while starting itunes. Keep pressing until you see the prompt choose a library.
On XP, the ITL fie should be here

  • ITunes Library locked - Nas drive

    Hello,
    Heres my situation
I have an iMac at home and I recently purchased a Synology DS412+ NAS drive.
I have created an iTunes library on the Synlology drive. Everythings been working reletively well. However I am now getting this errorr as soon as I load up iTiunes.
The iTunes Library.itl file is locked, on a locked disk, or you do not have write permision for this file.
I got this error after a cold boot after the last thing I did which was to use Terminal to force index on that drive.
    jonathans-imac:~ Phoenix$ sudo mdutil -i on /Volumes/music
    /Volumes/music:
              Indexing enabled.
I have connected to the Synology via the Go, Connect to server command
    afp://DiskStation._afpovertcp._tcp.local
Signed in with the login credentials that have full read/write access on the Synology.
Can someone please assist me on what I am doing wrong as this is really ruining my Mac experience and I almost renders the point of my Synology pointless.

All you need to do... if it's not too late... is click on the Synology icon in the upper left hand side of the menu bar (the icon with the four shapes in it).  This will open a dropdown menu.  At the bottom of this menu choose "restart".  This will shut down your Synology NAS and reboot it.  Everything should be fine after the reboot.

  • Updating Itunes Library locks up after upgrading to 7.3

After updating itunes, I open the program and it immediately begins "Updating itunes Library." It locks up after completing 3/4 of the library update. The program is then unresponding. What can be done to remedy this problem?

I am having the Exact Same Problem, I also notice in the Task Manager that iTunes.exe is using an average of 92-95% of the CPU... Yet I have let it run for 2 hours and still nothing!

  • TS1717 unes, i have windows 8, i get the message, "the itunes Library .itl file is locked, on a locked disk, or you do not have write permission for this file.  how did this happen, how do i fix this?

the message"The itun, library .itl file is locked, on a locked disk, or you do not have write permission for this file". i have windows 8. how why did this happen? how do i correct this and prevent another occurance?  I am able to access itunes on my i5, ipad, and my old i4 that i use solely as my ipod now. At the time  problem occurred, i was connected to ext hard drive that hold over 190GB music, to add to my library. I am now unable to add to my library using my laptop.  any advise/help is greatly appreciated!!

I just had the same problem and was able to fix it after trying a couple of things I found after a search.
The solution that worked for me:
Find iTunes folder - it should be in C:\Program FIles (x86) or similar depending on your operating system
Right click the entire folder (no need to open it) and click properties
    Click the security tab
Click edit and highlight the user name under which you logged in.
Click the box next to full in the allow column, which should check everything
    Click apply
    Open iTunes
    This worked for me.

  • How To Fix: "The iTunes Library.itl file is locked, on a locked disk, or you do not have write permission for this file."

I can't reopen my iTunes after I have to force quit when it does not respond. I get this message:
"The iTunes Library.itl file is locked, on a locked disk, or you do not have write permission for this file."
I've read to do the solutions. I right clicked on both the iTunes and Music folder and went to info for each. On both the lock at the bottom of the Get Info was locked. All of my users including admin can read and write all files within those folders. They are even a shared folder. I clicked on the lock to unlock it, typed in my admin password, and went to the gear to apply to all files inside. After doing that I keep getting the saved message.
I tried another way that I've found online to move my ituneslibrary folder to the desktop and then open my iTunes. In theory the iTunes is supposed to ask for where the iTunes library is. Once that is prompted you quit iTunes and drag the iTunes Library folder back to the folder from the desktop and reopen iTunes to apprently solve the problem. However, when I move the iTunes Library file to the desktop and try to reopne iTunes the icon just keeps bouncing and when I right click the application does not respond.
This problem is only resolved if I restart/shut down my macbook pro which is a 15-inch Core 2 Duo with intel. It will be 5 years old in December. I currently have Lion and the latest iTunes 10.5. This problem started in late December.

If you hold down the option key when starting iTunes, it will allow you to select a library or create a new one.
You can create a new one, and then add all of your iTunes music back in by simply dragging the old iTunes music file onto iTunes.
There are more detailed instructions at http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1451#
It will show you how to re-build your iTunes database file.

  • ITunes won't open, I get this message: The iTunes Library .itl file is locked, on a locked disk or you do not have write permission for this file.

    iTunes won't open.
I get this message: The iTunes Library .itl file is locked, on a locked disk or you do not have write permission for this file.

This may indicate a corrupt preference file with iTunes trying to open the wrong location. Try holding down shift as you launch iTunes then choose the correct file, normally <User's Music>\iTunes\iTunes Library.itl. See iTunes: How to open an alternate iTunes Library file or create a new one.

  • HT1527 iphone wont open it says the itunes library.itl file is locked on a locked disk or you do not have write permission for this file. nothing l  do seems to help thanks

Have tried to connect and sync my iphone 4 to my computer in itunes but this message keeps coming up The itunes Library .itl file is locked on a locked disk. or you do not have write permission for this file.

I have tried both suggestions, unfortunately neither fixed this for me. Hoping there's another possible fix. Thanks in advance.
Empty/corrupt iTunes library after upgrade/crash and/or Repair security permissions for iTunes for Windows.

  • I can't open itunes it's giving an error "The Itunes Library.itl file is locked, on a locked disk, or you do not have write permission for file.

yes itunes will not open it gives me an error that the file itunes library.itl is locked or on a locked disk or i don't have write permission for it.

Make sure that you have closed all programs that might be using the iTunes library.itl file. I would hit CTRL + ALT + DEL buttons and enter the Task Manager - from there end any unnecessary program running in the background.
Next try to start iTunes again. If it fails, restart PC, do the same with Task Manager and try to open iTunes again.

My iTunes won't open! It keeps saying 'The iTunes Library.itl is locked on a locked disk or you not have write permission for this file.' Please Help!

this may happen on external drives if:
The external drive was hotpluged (removed) without going the correct "eject" way
The iTunes library (database) got corrupted
    First Aid for external drive
    Close iTunes
Unmount (eject) external drive the right way.
    Mount drive again
Go to Workplace -> right click external drive -> choose "clean up" This will force the filesystem to rescan the file structure of the drive and rebuilding the file system table and journaling file.
After the tool shows "done" (could last some time depending on size of drive) restart iTunes
If your iTunes library is on your internal drive, this may happen
The system was not shoot down correct, e.g. "pulled the plug"
The iTunes library (database) got corrupted
First Aid for internal hard drive
    Close iTunes
    Reboot system
Go to Workplace -> right click external drive -> choose "clean up"
After the tool shows "done" (could last some time depending on size of drive)
    Reboot system, restart iTunes
If none of the above fixes your problem, post here.

  • Itunes library issue, its locked?

I apologize in advance if someone has already asked this question but i cant seem to find an answer in the support section of this site.
Ok here it goes. When i try to open itunes a message pops up saying that the itunes library.itl is locked on a locked disk, or i dont have the write permission for the file. This also seems to be a user specific issue since my sister can access Itunes fine from her account.
    Were both computer administrators
I have the most recent itunes updates installed
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you.

In Windows Explorer, right-click > Get Properties on that exHD itunes folder. Go to the Security tab and give your windows user ID full control and ownership. Make sure to check the box for child/subfolders to get those same permissions.
