ITunes library - lost ratings and podcasts
I held the shift key and opened iTunes and chose an alternate library. I then closed iTunes and restarted the same way but this time chose my main library. In doing so it appears that all of my ratings I disappeared except for those give 2 years ago and all of my Podcast subscriptions are gone.
Any ideas on why this would happen and how to restore the library back to the way it is supposed to be?
If the library you have chosen is 2 year out of date, is it possible that you have chosen the wrong library?
You haven't said anything about how you have things set up, but the sort of thing I am thinking of might be:
You moved your music and library files onto an external drive a while ago leaving your old library on the the c: drive. When you chose a library you chose the old one on the c: drive rather than the one on the external drive?

iTunes was just updated on my Windows 7 and now I lost EVERYTHING in my music library. All of my music that I added and purchased, all my videos (TV shows) and all of my podcasts (some of them are older podcasts that I was saving to listen to for later and I can't ever get them back because I don't subscribe to them now). How do I get all my files back? I'm so upset! I had a similar issue a earlier this year with an iTunes update. I wish I can keep everything the way it is without ever having to update the program. I either lose ALL my files or the program doesn't work right.

Tried to use iTunes library from Windows and Mac - lost everything
My iTunes Library is on a NAS (Dlink DNS-323) and until last night, I was only using it with my two macs (both running 10.5.6).
Last night, I wanted to use it from my Vista laptop so I looked up online and realized I can easily do it by renaming the "iTunes Library" file to iTunes Library.itl and double clicking from iTunes on Windows.
It seemed to work because when iTunes opened, I could see my playlists and I saw the message "updating library". I was afraid about the update to the library, so I just exit iTunes at the time thinking it would all be ok.
Guess not. This morning when I opened iTunes from my iMac, it opened with and empty library. I tried to do Library/Import Playlist and it did nothing but add the "standard" playlists to my library. I tried it a few times, with different settings (trying to re-rename the .itl back to just iTunes Library for example) and nothing worked.
Do I have any hope to recreate the library? From now on I will be backing up the NAS also, but meanwhile any ideas?Your library file was being converted from Mac-based paths to Windows-based paths; apparently iTunes isn't courteous enough to work on a temp file while doing that conversion. If the "iTunes Music Library.xml" file is still in one piece, you can use File menu -> Library -> Import playlist and point the file dialog to the xml file. Just about all the previous iTunes-only metadata will be imported (IIRC, about all you lose is some "Skip" info, and of course, Date Added will reflect the new date of import). -
My itunes library was damaged and lost most of my songs and playlists
last night my itunes was working fine, but today when i tried to open itunes, it said that my itunes library was damaged and most of my songs and playlists were gone.
i tried re-creating my itunes library, but it didnt help at all.
i did not back up my itunes library.
how do i get my songs and playlists back?

Make a copy of the one named damaged, and rename it to iTunesLibrary.itl
Look in the Previous iTunes Folder and see if one of those has a fairly recent date.

And of course, going forward, make sure to do regular backups of that ITL file! -
recently when i was creating a playlist, i realized that i was missing music from my extensive itunes (12.0.1.26) library. i found the solution "itunes: finding lost media and downloads" and used the general approach to find the music in finder and copy it to itunes. i don't want to do this every time i find i am missing music. is there an automated fix? i want apple to develop a way to automate the fix. can it be that this isn't a problem for many people?
i ask this now because i just looked for music i thought i had but can't find. maybe i am wrong about having the artist, but it has happened on another artist too. i can't trust itunes to tell me whether i have a song or not. i don't want to keep going back to finder, especially when the instructions in "itunes: finding lost media and downloads" doesn't actually reflect my system (os x 10.7.5).
i don't want to try to do a restore. i have never done a restore on my mac (previously a pc user). and, i don't know how far back to take the restore to find the old music. and then music i have added since i lost the old music wouldn't be there.
i understand that there are so many system variables that apple would need to take into consideration with a general fix. but: i am assuming that apple's changes have caused my problem and feel that apple should do something to fix it. perhaps my assumption is incorrect.
thank you for your help.limnos, i always have backups. the problem is that i don't know how far back in time to take a restore because i don't know how long this has been going on. and, if i take the restore back very far, i will lose what has been added since the music started to disappear.
i don't even know what you mean when you say "you will check there aren't any broken links (use a script from the Dougscripts web site) before you do a backup."
i agree with you to some extent about not automatically installing upgrades. i'm still running lion and was pushed to it from snow leopard. the problem is that i have a hard time envisioning the changes described in an update to judge whether something is valuable or not.
i have questions about your last paragraph. i'm going to repeat it here and then insert my questions as i go. please forgive my all caps for the moment:

While syncing movie iPod/iTunes deletes my music and Podcasts. This is very frustrating becaucse I have ALL my sync settings set to Manual. What can I do to stop this? I'm about to throw my iPod against the wall!
sorry you've just been dealt a blow from Apple trying to "help" its customers. you're correct: you cannot sync only music or movies. even if "manually sync" is selected, once you sync something like moves, the rest of your library gets deleted. it's completely backwards and non-intuitive.

my hard drive crashed. I regularly duplicated it to an external hard drive. So can do I find the files I need to recover my music library, audible books and podcasts to my new hard drive?
Restore the iTunes folder from <User's Music> in the backup to <User's Music> in the rebuilt computer, install iTunes. Job done.

i know the directions are on apple's website and also ilounge but i dont understand them... could someone please explain to me how to backup my music including playlists and ratings.
Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash
Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps you shouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping. In the Previous iTunes Libraries folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename iTunes Library.itl as iTunes Library (Corrupt).itl and then rename the restored file as iTunes Library.itl. Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.
See iTunes Folder Watch for a tool to catch up with any changes since the backup file was created.
When you get it all working make a backup!
You should be able to go back to the last backup before recent events, recover that version of the library with all your ratings, bring it up to date with any changes, then back up for the future. Good luck.

You must enable iTunes Match on the new computer. The best way to accomplish what you want to do is to create a new, empty library by launching iTunes while holding down the Option key (Shift on Windows) and choosing "new library." Do not let iTunes scan for new content, but do enable iTunes Match on the empty library. Once the scan is finished you may delete tracks from the cloud. When you are done switch back to the main iTunes library. -
Having a bad day my iTunes library got corrupted and my back up disk has failed how can I restore my purchases from the iTunes store? When I try it tells me the pruchases have already been downloaded to this computer.
Does your purchased rmusic appears under the Purchased link under Quicklinks on the right-hand side of the iTunes store home page (music can't be re-downloaded in all countries) ? If they do and you don't have the cloud symbol against them so as to re-download them, then do you still have the entries for them in your library i.e. where you would normally click on them to play them ? If you do then try deleting them from there (iTunes will be seeing them and assuming that you still have them somewhere) and they should then get the cloud symbol for re-downloading in the Purchased link.

The pc that I used to download CD music to into my itunes library was stolen and I had no backup. I have all my itunes music on my iphone and ipod. can i have music from music from my iphone or ipod transferred to my mac computer through itunes?
I have a similar problem. I recieved an IPAD for my birthday, and my daughter updated my itunes library so i can use it with the ipad...and somehow all my songs (unpurchased from itunes, and downloaded from a large collection of CDs) ...and play lists were deleted. I still have them on my old ipod, and wonder how to get them back onto my computer so I can redistribute some of them to the ipad. I must be getting too old for this tech stuff, it gets less user friendly every year.

We had 2 computers: his itunes library on one, and mine on the other. We got rid of both of those and got a new computer. I put new music on the new computer. My ipod songs are not on itunes on the new computer. Will I erase them if I sync? How do I add new music?

Well nevermind! It appears that if I just add my entire music library and run a Match update, it ends up making the associations and showing the tracks as being stored in my local music library.

iCloud does not provide a service like Dropbox where you can save random files to it as a way of having external storage. As for the HD damage, don't you have a backup of the itunes library elsewhere? If so, copy it to the replacement hard drive, along with any other important files that were on the damaged HD.

Recently I was working on a proect where I wanted to have large text in the background (lower opacity) scrolling behind the smaller main text. I was using keyframes to control the motion of the text but noticed that it had a built in ease in/ease out
