ITunes Library management questions

My name is Lucas osmond i am having difficulty trying to figure out how to do something to iTunes. Here is some background I have been a radio disc jockey for 20+ years. I have a very large library of music 40,000+ albums. A lot of my albums information is not in the iTunes database, I have taged 18,000+ albums. I have created a playlist with all of these albums I would like to remove everything in my library except for this playlist. The playlist is the question is 129.7 GB. My first attempt was to back up the entire playlist to a 160 GB iPod. I did this and and Then I enabled disk mode of the iPod and copied the folder called music to my desktop. The hard drive on my mac is 500 GB which means once I copied it to the desktop I did not have enough room of the computer to import the tracks into a fresh iTunes library. Is there an easier way to do this process? I realize i have a special case and what I am trying to do is not normal. If nobody comes up with any ideas is there anyway for a customer to talk to a Apple developer or iTunes engineer?

You need to ask Apple to reset your security questions; ways of contacting them include phoning AppleCare and asking for the Account Security team, clicking here and picking a method for your country, and filling out and submitting this form.
They wouldn't be security questions if they could be bypassed without Apple verifying your identity.

  • ITunes 10 and iTunes Library Manager 5.3

Is there any kind soul out there on a Mac who uses Doug's iTunes Library Manager 5.3 and has upgraded from iTunes 9 to iTunes 10? Does iTunes Library Manager 5.3 work with version 10?
I am NOT looking for people telling me to use iTunes' own multiple library feature; I already have a complex multi-library/multi-preference/multi-hard drive set up and will only update to iTunes 10 if it works with Doug's iTunes Library Manager 5.3 (or if Doug updates; no mention of iTunes 10 on his website).
I'd appreciate any feedback from anyone who's actually upgraded to iTunes 10 and is using iTunes Library Manager 5.3.
    Thanks in advance.

  • ITunes Library Manager X album art

I use iTunes Library Manager to manage 40 separate iTunes libraries (I have a LOT of music). I have secured album art for all of my music, some secured by iTunes itself, and some retrieved by me using Google Images and cut & paste. I only just noticed that an Album Art Work file has been created for each library, and each Album Art Work file contains all the album art for all the songs in all the libraries, so the same 2.3 Gig file exists 40 times on my computer. On my Mini, that takes up about 2/3 of the hard disk. Does anyone have any experience solving this problem?

OK, I'll try ... have you used AppZapper? It removes all traces of the application (but check in Spotlight just to be sure it's all gone) , so if you delete iTunes and reinstall it from your back-up disc, you should get back to normal. The other thing you can try is using OnyX to find any invisible files that might be causing the problem.
I'm sure you've thought of these things, but nothing else comes to mind.

  • Large storage question regarding Itunes Library Management

    HI
I am running Itunes 7.4 and have a 500gb drive physically attached via firewire 800. I currently have my itunes preferences set to copy files to the library when added. My question is. Can I only have itunes physically manage and store my music on the 500gb drive while keeping my video on another drive and have itunes just maintain a reference. In other words I want to have multiple physical either managed or referenced by the itunes library.
How are you all dealing with this as your video and music libraries continue to get larger and larger?
    thanks
    jim

Create a second iTunes Library. Quit itunes - hold down the option key when relaunching iTunes and follow the directions offered.

  • Itune library backup question

OK, I am a novice and still learning. I have an external harddrive and I have backed up my iTunes library to it. Question. Do I need to keep my library on my C drive also??

Have your songs backed up to another drive to have additional copies for safe keeping while you are still running your iTunes library from the files on your computer? If so then you need to keep the originals there. If you actually want to run iTunes from your external drive then you might find these articles useful:

  • ITunes library file question

I lost the data on my external harddrive {long story}, but we've sent it to data recovery. If they don't manage to recover all my music files off there, but are able to, for example, recover the iTunes library file which is also on my external harddrive, is it enough to have just the iTunes library file to put my music and everything back into iTunes or do I need all the original music files as well?
    Thanks

So how come in order to keep ratings and play bounts etc, you need to have that library file if it's just a list of the songs?
    Those fall under metadata.

  • ITunes library transfer question

    Everyone,
I create a Libary on my MacBook Air it has 2000 songs.  I want to move this to my Mac Book Pro machine and then Sync it with a new purchased iPod Touch.  Can this be done and how.  Do I just copy the iTunes Media folder?
I tested this and it copied to my Mac Book Pro by coping the iTunes Media folder at the file level to the Music ITunes folder on my Mac Book Pro held down the option key and selected the library.  It opened fine on my Mac Book Pro just fine.  Then I decided to test coping it to a device.  I have a very old iPod I choose some songs and sync it.  Worked fine can listen to the music on the iPod but when I go to iTunes all the music from the iPod is grayed out.  I can play it from iTunes.  WHY?
Steps that I want to do
    1. I create my iTunes library the way I want it on my MacBook Air.
    2. I copy it (is there a special way) to my MacBook Pro open iTunes holding down the option key choose this library and it should work where I can play music in iTunes.
    My exact question is this.
If I purchase a 32GB iPod Touch can I plug it into my Macbook Pro and Sync it and it will copy the music over will the music from my library play and work on both in iTunes and on the newly pruchase iPod Touch.
I am trying to fine this out before purchasing the iPod Touch.
Are they coming out with new modeled iPod Touches in Oct?  Should I wait is my question.

  • ITunes library management software suggestions?

I've tried TuneUp but don't necessarily love it. Goal is to add missing lyrics, Artwork, fix artists names, etc.
Any other suggestions out there or is this the best one?

No computer program is perfect, I'll give you that. But I still think iTunes is the best one going, especially considering the price!
I think there's a market that Apple could tap into to have an iTunes Pro, costing around $50 that would have more robust library management tools, to solve the problem you're talking about, also allowing mutiple computers to more easily share and update the same library and stuff like that.
All that said, I think there are some workarounds that might help you:
    1) I'm not sure why you "re-import" your library each time iTunes loses the connection to the files. Isn't it faster just to close iTunes and re-open it. If iTunes sees the files are present at startup the ! will disapear.
    2) Someone on this forum recently suggested a good tip: create an automator action to automatically connect to your network drive when you open iTunes, so you don't have remeber to manually do that tedious step.
    Does any of that help?
    Sara.

  • Itunes Library Classification Question

    Hi Everyone!
Thanks in advance for all your help! I've been wondering, under Itunes Library menu on the left (where it says Library / Music Movies TV Shows Podcasts Radio), can you add a self defined section as well?
Also, is there a way to password protect certain content on your itunes library? I use frontrow, and i would like it to not show up there, unless i unlock it via a password, or be hidden till i put in a password.
Thanks for your help once again!

The categories in the source list are predefined and can be added or removed by going to iTunes>Preferences>General. The only things you can define and add yourself are playlists:

  • Song Library Management Question

I have a music library several times larger than my 32gb ipod. My computer recently had a hard drive failure. I reinstalled itunes with everything else. My ipod of course still works. I have about 2750 songs on it. The problem is everything in my library is now checked.
I would like to take my ipod library list and check only those songs on my itunes library and have my ratings and play count overwrite what is in my library. If I sync will it assume my library is the master list and try to stick everything on my ipod overwriting my ratings and play count? It's bad enough I lost my library rankings in the reinstall, but I would hate now to lose the 3-5 star ratings on the several hundreds songs I have marked that I like that are on my ipod.
How do I handle this in itunes?

I'm not sure I have enough information to answer this. You mentioned all of your songs being checked, and it doesn't sound like you actually lost any music. If all of your music was stored on the drive that crashed, and you have simply restored it from data cds for example, then there is nothing left of your original library and you have no choice but to rebuild. This happened to me in 2006, and it's very frustrating, but as a previous poster mentioned, it actually can be fun. once you get past the initial shock of losing everything, You just have to adapt the idea of a fresh clean start and "this one will be better than the last anyway."
On the other hand if your computer has two hard drives, or if you kept your music folder on an external hard drive, other than the drive that crashed. You may have your previous library still available and not even know it. For example, your C Drive crashes, you restore evrything, then you open a music folder on an external hard drive and drag your music back into your new library. You have all of your music, but it's a mess, all of your ratings and playcounts are gone, and yes everything is checked.
If that's the situation, you can fix it in about 30 seconds.
Here's the problem. I have windows XP, I know nothing about Vista and I can't really give you step by step instructions. The instructions I'm giving you are for XP and it may or may not work the same on vista. You can try it, and if it doesn't work, open iTunes. Click help. Look for answers on the subject "creating more than one library", "using multiple iTunes Libraries" or something to that effect. They should be able to give you the answer for vista. I went to my help to see if I could find it for you, they only give me one answer and make no mention of other computers. I suspect each computer has help for that compueter.
    Anyway, here's the XP solution.
Hold the shift key down, and open iTunes. Do not let up on the shift key until you get a window that asks you to choose a library, or create a new library. If iTunes opens without giving you that choice, just close it and re-open it with the shift key down. Nine times out of Ten it works on the first try. Click "choose a library". You will get another window that allows you to navigate to your hard drive and show iTunes where your music is stored. In a folder called iTunes or iTunes Music, choose "iTunes Library.itl" This should bring back your entire library exactly the way it was when you last used it.
I think I remember raeding somewhere that Vista stores the library in a different place, I don't remember where, I had no reason to pay attention at the time. But hopefully you know where it is. Hope this helps a little

  • IPhoto Library Manager question!

    Hi,
My iPhoto recently stopped working (it opens fine but immediately stops responding and I always have to force quit). After reading advice online I downloaded iPhoto Library Manager so that I would at least have access to my photos. I'd really like to return to using iPhoto and assume that to do so I should remove the application, re-download it and then transfer the photos back over from iLM. Firstly, is this the right thing to do (if not, what is)? And secondly, will iLM save my photos even if I delete iPhoto?
Thanks a lot for your help!

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen. Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then take one of the actions that you're having trouble with. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.

  • Itunes content management question

Can someone explain why changes made to iTunes media folders, such as renaming, deleting or moving albums, do not show up in itunes? In other words how do I get the content in iTunes to reflect the files in music/iTunes/iTunes media? thanks

    JSR 10,
iTunes, by design, does not have "folder watch" capability.  It does not watch for or notice any changes to files or folders.
As a general rule, once a song is in iTunes, you should not manually change, move, or rename the file or any of its containing folders.  If you do, iTunes will simply lose the file.
If you wish to change the metadata for a track, right-click it within iTunes and use the Get Info dialog.  This changes the tag data in the file as well as the iTunes library information.

  • Library Management question

Hi, is there a way of ordering the library view by albums which are collapseable, so that I don't have to scroll down endless tracks? Ideally I'd just like to see a nice unclutterd list of my albums by title, which I could then expand individually to see the track names. I don't want to setup playlists for all my albums, and mostly use the library view. Hope this isn't too obvious. thanks

Thanks for the replies, but I'm really not sure that you understand my question. I know you can display and order by song, album, track. What I want is each album displayed as a single one line title, without all its tracks displayed, making a short neat list of albums. I would then, for example, be able to click a collapse/expand triangle, or on the album name, to see all the tracks on each individual album. I find the default setting where you see all the tracks cluttered and exhausting to scroll down. thanks

  • IPhoto library management question...again

First of all, I am new to the forums and new to Macs in general, hence some of my concerns/questions are probably a result of my exclusive use of Windows.
I have a relatively large number of photos (15,000) and have spent a lot of time over the years organizing them in a logical structure (Photos->Year->Month->Date->JPG files...) I have been reading a lot about iPhoto and I do understand the file structure within iPhoto, and I would be happy to begin adapting with my new photos. However, I am looking for an efficient way to transfer over all my hundreds of folders to the iPhoto library. I know it's been asked before, but thought maybe I am missing something. If I am way off then blame it on the extensive use of Windows over the last 15 years...I am mainly concerned with preserving the file structure/hierarchy. Do I need to just throw it from my OCD mind and just let iPhoto deal with it, while I practice with the export function?!?
Thanks for any input you can provide.

Each folder imported into iPhoto ends up as a single event. However, they will not be nested. You can go thru and add the year, month and date to the folder titles be for importing and you'll get an Event name that will be more indicative of the contents. I use "MM/DD/YY-Brief description".
Then, as Larry suggested you can duplicate your folder hierarchy in iPhoto by creating a virtual folder to match the container folders (those that contain other folders but no photos) and drag those Events into it to create albums for those events.

  • ITunes library management

I currently let iTunes organize my library, I have "Copy files to iTunes Folder" & "Keep iTunes Folder Organized"  both checked off.  My Dj software reccomends that the i "UNCHECK' both those options.  How do I consolidate all the music in all my "iTunes Media Folder" (which is in 9 thousand different folder pathways) into 1 folder, without copying the files and only moving them?

You don't do it using iTunes.
So Serato has reccomended that I cosolidate all music into 2-3 folders.Sounds like a misunderstanding. Before you do this, I really, really, really recommmend you go ask Serato again about this and get some clarification.
This will simply make a big mess of everything.
