ITunes Library on External HD used with new OS install?

Hi All.
Macbook OS Update:  I'm planning on performing an OS erase and install of my newly purchased copy of Snow Leopard. But I've got quite an extensive iTunes library that's stored on an external hard drive. I've pointed iTunes to the drive and it now works as it should (if a little slow).
Question is, how to perform the OS install and retain all of the iTunes library intact?
Do I just point iTunes on my freshly OS installed Macbook to the music library on my external HD? Is it the same procedure as when migrating the library to an external HD - holding down the ALT key when iTunes is loading and then choosing a destination for iTunes to source content?
I want to avoid having rip all of my CD's again!
Any pointers welcome.

copy the entire iTunes folder (not just the iTunes music or media folder) to an external HD or thumb drive
perform your erase & install
copy the iTunes folder from the external to <Macintosh HD>/users/<yourname>/music on the new install (replacing the one already there)
connect the external with your media files
fire up iTunes

  • Migrating iTunes library from external hard drive to new laptop

Hi there, I am wondering if anyone can help me please? I am a complete newbie to this forum thing, I am just getting into this cosmic sharing world but find myself utterly frustrated with iTunes and my new laptop - with little help on the Support pages, so i am venturing into the unkown and seeking help from anyone out there.........slightly scary for me, this really is my first post on a forum - so be gentle with me :0)
On my old steam driven laptop I had to move my iTunes library to an external hard drive, my 250MB hard drive just wasn't enough (I know pathetic wasn't it). All ok there and I have been using it no problem. I have now upgraded (finally!!) to a new wonderful laptop (with webcam and all sorts!)but I am at the end of my tether trying to get my iTunes library from my external hard drive to appear in the Library on the laptop. boo hoo.
I have tried changing the file location in the Advance section of preferences, i have tried choosing the library after holding down the shift key on start up (you see not a complete numpty). They all appear to work as i don't get any error messages, but the songs just don't appear in the library. Am i being a complete numb nuts here? what am i missing?
If anyone can help i would be really grateful as this is spoiling the euphoric feeling i have of my lovely new laptop!
    cheers Latte

Thank Chris I have just done that. How do I now get them in to Itunes ?
If you simply copy the iTUnes folder to /Music/ and launch iTUnes, everythign will be there. No need to import anything.
This will work the same with iPhoto.
Simply copy the Photo library to /Pictures/ folder and launch iPhoto.

  • Former itunes installation from external hdd syncing with new installation.

    Hello, i need some help!
My laptop has a severe mainbord damage, it's not economical to repair it.
so, i'm going to mount the 2,5" hdd in an external hdd case with usb.
in addition, i get a new iphone due to fluid damage.
so my itunes with the iphone backup is on the external hdd, to run the external hdd as a boot hdd is not possible.
how can i solve the problem to have my backup on my new iphone?
would be great to have any ideas!
    thanks in advance

The iTunes library is not stored with the application - it is stored separately and accessed by the iTunes application so I'm not sure how installing an iTunes update or removing and re-installing iTunes would delete your entire iTunes library where all this data is stored. And you don't maintain a backup of your important data including music and video purchased from the iTunes Music Store? This is important regardless the platform but more so when using Windows with all the virus, adware and spyware concerns.
iTunes includes a preference setting to not automatically sync an iPhone automatically when any iPhone is connected. Be sure to select this first which doesn't require your iPhone being connected.
When your iPhone is connected, do not manually sync. At the iTunes menu bar go to File and select Transfer Purchases From - (the name of your iPhone).
This will transfer iTunes purchased content only from your iPhone to iTunes. Any music transferred to the iPhone from music CDs will not be transferred and the same for any movies transferred to the iPhone that were not purchased via iTunes.

  • How do I move my iTunes library on external HDD to a new computer?

My iTunes library has always been on an external drive.  It has moved from an eMac(10.4) to a Mac Mini(10.5) and I'm trying to move it to an iMac(10.8).  How can I do this? I've set the preferences to the external HDD, but this point and play doesn't work.  If I select an item via the folder and select open with iTunes, the item then appears in the iTunes listing.

Connect the external HDD to the iMac, launch iTunes while holding down the Option key. Choose the option to select library and navigate to the top level folder of the iTunes media on the external. Select it and click OK.

  • How to populate iTunes library on external hard drive onto new MBP.

I have a Powerbook G4 that is slowly dying. I have a new MBP that I want to populate my iTunes library onto without moving my music off my external hard drive. I've tried holding down the OPTION key while launching iTunes and selecting the iTunes Library file, but it seems to only load songs that were added in 2006 or later.
How do I get a current iTunes Library file that will populate all the songs?
Or am I going about this the wrong way?
    Thanks!!

i want to keep the music on the external HD, and I have linked the MBP iTunes account to the external HD (as in where to look for music), but I just can't get the whole library to populate into the new iTunes account.
    Thanks!

  • How to get ITunes library from external hard drive to new PC

have ITunes folder from dying PC saved on external hard drive. PC now dead. New PC has Windows7, and have loaded ITunes.
Now need to know exactly what to do to get all that lovely music from the external hard drive onto the new Windows7 PC. The ITunes folder has the following inside it:
ITunesMusic folder in it, which looks like all the music is in there.
    Album Artwork folder
    ITunesLibrary.itl
    ITunesMusicLibrary.xml
    ITunesLibraryGenius.itdb
    ITunesLibraryExtras.itdb
What do I do, and in what order? I'm thinking I should NOT need to plug in the ipod, since everything is saved on the external drive. (I don't want to accidentally wipe the Ipod, since I'm pretty sure it is set to automatically sync.....)
the whole point of doing frequent backups was to not lose anything. Note: did NOT use apple for backups, just regular backup program. Can see the files and folders, just need to knkow what to do.
Thanks in advance for the help!

Drag and drop the whole folder into the iTunes application.

  • Transferred itunes library from Windows XP PC to new Windows 7 PC. plugged in 3rd gen Ipod. Ipod icon appears along with playlists, music etc. Songs are grayed out and won't play. Please help!

I recently transferred itunes library from windows XP PC to new Windows 7 PC. The transfer was successful, however when I plug my 3rd gen Ipod Nano into the new PC, the Ipod icon appears along with the music, playlists, etc. The songs are shown but are 'grayed out' and wont play or sync. The 'Devices & Printers' window in new PC shows icon for Ipod driver & is OK. The icon for the Ipod appears but depicts a delta shaped warning icon that states that the Ipod is'not operating properly'. Tried troubleshooting. The troubleshooting message states the the Ipod is 'disconnecting'. Can you help me with this problem?

Then, I dropped the entire itunes file from the old PC (XP) into an empty external drive.
That "itunes file from the old PC"?  Is that the iTunes folder, from the old PC, that was in the user home folder's Music folder?
All of the library, playlists, etc. from the ipod as they always have been are shown, by they are 'grayed out' and will not open or play.
That's on the iPod, correct?  Are all of your old playlists in iTunes, from the old PC, still there in iTunes on the new PC?  Are the songs in iTunes still playable?
This document provides the steps to transfer a complete iTunes library between two computers.  See the section called External drive.
iTunes: How to move your music to a new computer - Apple Support
There are many steps, but this is a summary.  (1) On the old PC, consolidate all of your iTunes data into the iTunes folder.  (2) Copy this iTunes folder to the external drive.  (3) On the new PC (that has iTunes installed but NOT running), replace its existing iTunes folder with the one from the old PC (on the external drive).  When you run iTunes, it uses the iTunes folder from the old PC, and it should look like iTunes on the old PC (with all the playlists, ratings, play count, etc.), and your iPod will see the iTunes library as the same iTunes library (because it is the same library).
If you did something different, and the old PC is still accessible, you may want to try it using the method from the linked document.

I don't want to sync what is on my iPod to my iPad. (I have a 32gb iPod but only 16gb on iPad. The iPod I use mostly for music.) I can't seem to add the films I have downloaded onto iPad to iTunes. If I could do that, I could erase them from iPad to create more storage.
    This is intensely confusing, sorry.

    Answer.....
Yes you will lose the films that you downloaded to the iPad when you sync with your own iTunes unless you transfer the purchases into your own iTunes library. Were these movies that you purchased? If so, you might be able to download them again for free. Do you have multiple computers that you sync from or is this someone else's purchased content?
You can select whatever you want to sync to all of your devices in iTunes, you do not have to sync the same content to all device.

  • I just uploaded my iTunes library to the cloud using iTunes Match. When I buy a new song from iTunes, is it automatically put in the Cloud or do I have to push iTunes Match. I certainly don't want to upload the whole library again. Thanks

I just uploaded my iTunes library to the cloud using iTunes Match. When I buy a new song from iTunes, is it automatically sent to the Cloud or do I have to click on iTunes Match? I certainly don't want to start the whole upload process over again. Thanks

It should do so automatically, if not check it's staus this way.
In iTunes press "Command J" or select "View Options," under the view menu. In the popup window check iCloud Status. It will now appear as one of the columns in your main iTunes window.
This column will show which of your songs are matched, uploaded, ineligible, etc.
When you navigate to the song you downloaded you will see it's iCloud status.
If the status says, "waiting," and you want it available on Match now, then in the iTunes "Store," menubar pulldown, select "Update iTunes Match."
It will scan your drive, and update all status'.
You will not have to upload everything again.
Even if in iTunes you turn Match off, and back on again.
    Match remembers you!

  • ITunes Library on External Drive - NO .xml file

i recently had some serious hard drive corruption on my old computer, and figuring it was time for an upgrade anyway I decided to buy a new MacBook.
i had been storing all of my iTunes music on an external hard drive. i'm trying to figure out how to get my new MacBook to be able to access the music. I've changed the location of my library to the external drive in iTunes preferences, but no luck.
I know that iTunes has an .xml file where it stores things like song titles, data, etc etc -- unfortunately, that .xml file is on my old, ruined hard drive -- all i have is my external drive with my MP3s.
what do i do at this point? how can i access all of these songs using iTunes on my new MacBook without that .xml file?

There are 2 files that give iTunes and other apps the info the need to perform. The files are iTunes Library and iTunes Music Library.xml.
The default location of the 2 files is HD>Users>User Account>Music>iTunes - do not move regardless where your actual tunes are located. If the files are not present in the default location then iTunes will create new files with no info in them until you add the tunes back to the library.
This is from the iTunes Help Menu with a search for "files":
What are the iTunes library files?
The iTunes library is a database iTunes uses to organize your music. Two iTunes library files are created and maintained by iTunes for different purposes. They're both in the iTunes folder.
    Mac OS X
    /Users/username/Music/iTunes/iTunes Library
    /Users/username/Music/iTunes/iTunes Music Library.xml
    Microsoft Windows
    \Documents and Settings\username\My Documents\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Library.itl
    \Documents and Settings\username\My Documents\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Music Library.xml
The two different iTunes library files serve different purposes.
iTunes Library (iTunes Library.itl in Windows)
This file is a database of the songs in your library and the playlists you've created. Some song-specific data is saved in this file. If you delete the file, iTunes creates a new, empty copy when you open the application, but any playlists, song ratings, comments, or other information you created is lost. The iTunes Library file is only used by iTunes.
Note: The library file name for versions of iTunes prior to 4.9 was "iTunes 4 Music Library" for Mac OS X and "iTunes 4 Music Library.itl" for Windows. After upgrading to iTunes 4.9 or later, the older library files are moved to a "Previous iTunes Libraries" folder.
Tip: New versions of iTunes sometimes include enhancements to the iTunes library. When you open the new version of iTunes, iTunes upgrades your existing library to the new format and places a copy of the old library in the Previous Libraries folder. If everything goes fine during your upgrade to the latest version of iTunes, you can delete the older iTunes Library files.
    iTunes Music Library.xml
This file contains some (but not all) of the same information stored in the iTunes 4 Music Library file. The purpose of the iTunes Music Library.xml file is to make your music and playlists available to other applications on your computer. In Mac OS X other iLife applications (like iPhoto, iDVD, and iMovie) use this file to make it easier for you to add music from your iTunes library to your projects.

  • ITunes Library to External HD Problem

I am trying to take my iTunes library from my home Mac and put it on a new external HD so I can use my library at work on a PC. Disc utility shows the external HD formatted out of the box as MS-DOS.
    1. For some reason, it is not allowing me to write to the HD ("...could not be moved because Untitled cannot be modified"). How do I overcome this?
    2. What is the process to add the library to my PC once I have transferred to the external HD (not much PC experience here!)?

What is the process to add the library to my PC once I have transferred to the external HD (not much PC experience here!)?
If you're running iTunes 7, you can just drag the entire iTunes folder to your external hard drive. Then hold down the Option key while launching iTunes on the Mac. You'll be given a dialog box where you can select the iTunes library you want to use. Navigate to and select the iTunes folder on the hard drive. When you move the drive to your PC, do the same thing (though you hold down the Shift key on the PC).
As to your problem with writing to the drive, can you copy any file by dragging it via the Finder? If that also fails, then you'll probably want to take that issue up in the Mac OS X forum as Chris suggested.
