ITunes library out of free space?

For some reason well beyond my understanding, iTunes is reporting that it needs over 37.5 GB to back up my 64GB iPad.  What does not make sense in all of this is that my hard drive has 1.4TB left.  So what gives?

Actually, further to my last reply, I just played a song that wasnt located on my computer any longer (I deleted the file but left it in iCloud when prompted by iTunes).  The song has an iCloud icon next to it.  I double clicked it and it started playing.  When I opened up the info windon on this song, the Location says "iCould".  So, that leads me to believe that indeed we can delete the files from our master computer, and, stream them or download them from iCloud!  How great is this?  Can anyone coroborate this?  Cheers,  Mark

  • Out of free space?

I had 400mb of free space. I added one new music album and wanted to sync. I get a message no photos are synced (the 20mb i had on it were gone) because i'm out of free space. After syncing, the info says i still have 365 mb of free space. I sync again, wanting to get my pictures back on the device, but get same message telling me not enough space. But i do have enough! What's wrong?

I think it's something to do with the recent 3.1 upgrade - did you download and install that? I haven't found a solution yet but it appears to be listing my entire music library as "other" now and so I can't use the space I've got. It's really weird.

  • Ipod out of free space

I have an ipod classic 30GB. Only 10 GB is music and it says the rest is "other". There is no "other" stuff but music.  I don't want another ipod. I do need a new battery but other than that how can I free up this "other" space?

If a Sync of your Classic with its iTunes Library doesn't remove most (but not all) of the Other, then you may need to perform a Restore.
A Restore is carried out using iTunes (there's an option for Restore on the Summary pane).
Be aware that a Restore will remove everything from your iPod and put back onto it only what is selected to copy to the iPod and is in your iTunes Library.

  • ITunes Library out of whack - I was stupid and need help...

OK, so I keep my iTunes collection on an external drive (just won't fit on my 512GB SSD right now) and I have Windows 7 installed under Parallels Desktop.
I stupidly downloaded iTunes for Windows and pointed it toward my iTunes library on my external drive - and now the library on the Mac side is FUBARed.
I can manually find songs and iTunes asks, politely, if I would like for it to search for other items as well and when I click "Yes" (or OK or whatever) iTunes justs stops responding and I get a spinning beachball and I have to force quit the application.
Can anyone guide me through getting my iTunes library married to my Mac again? I had no problem moving it to an external drive - just followed the instructions, but now it looks as if I'm just out of luck...
    ...so what should I do?
    Clinton

I'd try the "Add to Library" option under the File menu.  I'd try it on a single artist first to make sure I didn't get a whole bunch of duplicates.  And, if I didn't (and I don't expect you will), then I'd just add the rest to the library.
Before doing all that, though, you might want to try the steps here:

  • ITunes 10 Auto Fill Free Space Results in "Over Capacity" Warning.

In iTunes 9 when i had "Automatically fill free space with songs" checked, it would fill my iPhone to about 100MB or so short of full. Very full, but enough space left to be able to download some apps or maybe some music directly to my phone.
In iTunes 10, clicking the very same option results in iTunes telling me that my phone will now be 0.34GB Over Capacity. I tried to do things like unsync large video files, but nothing seems to work. If i unclick "Auto fill" I have 9GB empty, but as soon as i put it back on it jumps over the limit.
    Anyone else having this problem?

Hi, had similar problem on iPad.
Overcame this by setting manual sync on the summary page as mentioned by John Ruffel previously.
then created a smart play list (File menu or ctrl Alt N) with the following rule:
'Size' 'is greater than' '1' MB
Limit to (check box) 12 GB selected by random   Note change to suit your device capacity
    Save
Give the smart play list a sensible name.
Select it to check there is some music in it.
If you are happy then drag it to your device, which should then sync automatically.
It worked for me, good luck.

  • Restoring library, not enogh free space

Something inadvertently deleted my User Library while trying to redirect a new user to an old Admin user file on a separate partition.
I need to go back to using the original user on the original structure running osx 10.6.8
Fortunately there is a TimeMachine image from yesterday of the user folder, where it shows the "library" intact.
Unfortunately when I try to restore just that Library folder it says "The item “Library” can’t be copied because there isn’t enough free space."
There is plenty of space.  And I have attempted this 5 times. I have reset permissions and restryed etc.
the library looks like it has a HUGE amount of files.
Everything is gone as far as mail and all presets unless I can get this Library back.
    what to do...?

In Time Machine, try control - clicking on the file and see if it will allow you to restore the library to the Desktop. If it will, then drag it into your User folder.

  • How to replace m4a conversion files with original mp3 files in iTunes library to reduce disk space?

    Hello
I have a rather large music collection most of which is in mp3 format and also kept in seperate folders to my iTunes music. I had iTunes set up copy media to iTunes folder as m4a so now have two sets of files which are now taking up a large proportion of my hard disk space. Is there an easy way to move my mp3 files into the Itunes folder to replace the copies then delete the copied files.
    Many thanks

By m4a are we talking compressed AAC?  Those don't take up any more room than the equivalent mp3 and probably give you better quality.
Are you positive those files are m4a?  If iTunes is set to copy media when you add it to the library I don't think it converts.  It only converts when you import.
Since we're not talking replacing mp3s with mp3s I don't know if there is an way to more or less invisibly replace the files.  If you were replacing a file with one of identical file name, you can trick iTunes into accepting it.  Since the new files end in mp3 and the old ones in m4a I suspect you will end up having to add the new files and delete the others.  This will of course mean you have to rebuild playlists and update tags.  Before you delete the old copy you can use Dougscript "Copy Tag Info Tracks To Tracks" to transfer some of the tag information that you might wish to retain such as playcount, ratings, last played, etc.

  • Restoring problem, Out of Free space

    OK, here is my problem.
I am trying to restore from a backup and I get the following message:
iTunes could not restore the iPhone "iPhone" because the backup could not be saved on the computer.
Additionally my computer will say Low Disk Space:
You are running on very low disk space on C:......
The problem is when this first appeared I removed about 5GB worth of programs on my C drive and when I tried to restore the same problem again.
I think that maybe when you try to restore it starts to put the information on your computer before transferring to IPhone. If that is correct, how can I delete those restores that didn't go through? (I.e. I had over 5GB of space at the start of the restore process and now I have zero space.) I think part of the problem is I have tried to restore like 6 times thus, taking up more and more space.
Thanks in advance for the help, I am so frustrated right now. I tried looking up the answer myself online but had no luck.
    Tim

    AppleRunner1,
Right Click Start> Click Explore> Find your iTunes folder, this should contain a folder labeled previous iPhone Back-ups, erase what you need to. But be careful if you erase the wrong one you could lose alot of your most recent data i.e. contacts apps and music.
    Hope this helps,
    Ryan

  • ITunes Library Out-of-Order

    Version: iTunes 7.5
At first, when I imported music files, they would always group together in order of tracks on the CD-just as I liked and wanted them to be. Now, my library completely changed and is all in alphabetical order and tracks from different CD's are mixed. How do I get it back to how it was?
P.S. - Under the Get Info in every file there is a track number and disc number...

  • How do I delete my husbands itunes library out of a computer and put mine in?

My husband gave me his PC when he bought a Imac.  I tried deleting his library, but I must have saved it by mistake.  Now my iphone shows my library in itunes, but the library on itunes is still his.  How do I remove his library from itunes and sync my devices so that it shows my library on the computer, as well as, on the devices?

Launch iTunes with the Option key held down and create a new library there.

  • I'm out of "free space" for my iPhones & iPads

I need to buy more space, but I'm curious if I should just buy the smallest package, or if I need to estimate what my long term needs will be.  Basically, if I buy the smallest package & then need more space, will I get a credit when I have upgrade to the next level, or will I have to pay full price?

Though this is not specifically stated in the documentation, I would expect you to be charged for the upgrade on a pro rata basis - i.e. the fraction of the extra cost for the proportion remaining of your year's subscription.

  • I was wondering if I could save apps on my iCloud account. Because I ran out of free space on my iphone

    Please help me

You don't have to save the apps itself. Just delete them from your device to get some storage capacity back. You will be able to re-download all of your purchased apps again and free of charge.

  • "iPhone cannot be synced because there is not enough free space

I recently purchased a new computer and I used home sharing to get all of my media onto my new computer.
Every time I try to sync I get the message "The iPhone "(Insert iPhone name here)" cannot be synced because there is not enough free space to hold all of the items in the iTunes library (additional [amount of space needed] required)"
I have a 32GB iPhone and I have it set to sync my entire music library (9.3GB), selected movies (not all my movies)(9.6GB), and I also have it set to sync my apps (2.5GB).  there is 3GB of photos and 1.32GB of other, I know there is enough room on my iPhone to house all of the content I have selected to be synced but for some reason I keep getting the same message which tells me I need an addition 15.30GB.
Also I have tried to re-sync my iPhone with the old computer I used to sync it to and now I'm getting the same message I get on my new computer on the old one.  My old computer was windows as well.
I have the latest iTunes and iOS for my iPhone.  I don't know what is wrong or how to fix it.  I have tried to refer to the web and have had no results so far.  Help would be greatly appreciated.

In case anyone is interested, I found a solution.
My interpretation of the problem is that somehow the iPhone lost track of free space and this process will clear that while not losing any data or settings on the iPhone.
This will also solve the problem where iTunes has lost the app/folder layout on the iPhone.
Please note I am not a technician and make no claim that this will work for anyone else, but it did for me. The steps below are as I remember them and may not be exactly the same for everyone.
    1) Backup the iPhone - I used iTunes to backup although this may also work with iCloud but I've not tried
    2) Reset the iPhone - from settings on the iPhone (settings/general/reset (etc))
    3) Carefully follow all the steps and choose to restore when you get to that step
    4) Keep you eye on iTunes as you will have to respond there when it askes which backup set to use for the restore - it is likely that the most recent will be the one you want.
    Good luck.

  • "Erase Free Space" work-around for non-apple ssd

for those of you attempting to "Erase Free Space" per knowledge base article:
"OS X Lion v10.7.3: User account passwords appear in log files for Legacy FileVault, and/or network home directories"
    quote:
    "6. Open Disk Utility.
    7. Select your OS X Lion volume on the left.
    8. Click "Erase Free Space…".
    9. Select the Erase Free Space Option you want and click "Erase Free Space". Enter admin name and password if prompted."
but instead seeing a grayed out "Erase Free Space" in Disk Utility?
you can perform an "Erase Free Space" by using WipeFS app by Jonathan Clark which can successfully perform a DoD (Department of Defense) wipe for digital media, apple's Disk Utility doesn't do this anymore with non-apple solid state drives (ssd)
    references:
    https://support.apple.com/kb/TS4272

...but instead seeing a grayed out "Erase Free Space" in Disk Utility?
    See,
Mac OS X: About Disk Utility's erase free space feature
    which says,
Note: With OS X Lion and an SSD drive, Secure Erase and Erasing Free Space are not available in Disk Utility. These options are not needed for an SSD drive because a standard erase makes it difficult to recover data from an SSD. For more security, consider turning on FileVault 2 encryption when you start using the SSD drive.
Also google "erasing space on ssd".
Bottom line, it is not something you want to do to a ssd.
