Itunes Library - shared drive

Here is my question. I have itunes on my mac mini - I just got a Buffalo Linkstation to set up as a shared drive on my network - I want to put movies on the shared drive to be able to then view on my Apple TV. I don't want my music on my shared drive, I want to keep it on my mini. Can I do this? If so how?

you can also move the movie files manually:
(a) temporarily change +*iTunes media folder location+* (preferences > advanced) to point to the NAS. on the same tab, ensure +*copy files to ... when adding to library+* is check marked
(b) highlight the movie files in iTunes, right-click (or ctrl-click) and select +consolidate files+ from the pop-up menu.
(c) point +*iTunes media folder location+* back to the original spot and delete (or keep) the original movie files from your local iTunes media folder.

ITunes Library shared between computers?

I have an iMac (OSX Lion) with two user accounts that are both sharing the same iTunes Library. We now have a Macbook Air with the same user accounts. The Macbook Air obviously does not have the same hard drive space and I therefore did not choose to migrate the library to the Air...What is the best way for each user to access the shared iTunes folder from the iMac? I would like to do this while on the same LAN as well as remotely if possible.
I assume that simply setting iTunes up for "Sharing" will handle the local area question, but what about while we are away from home? I assume that iCloud with iTunes Match would be the only answer?

Rented movies cannot be shared between computers. They can only exist on a single device at a time, and can only be moved from a computer to a player such as an iPod, iPhone or Apple TV. You cannot move a rental from one computer to another.
And yes, actually they do say that, in the Rentals FAQ, among other places.

Playlists with itunes library shared on a server?

I recently moved my itunes library to an external fw drive with server software and share it between 3 computers (a hipserv). Is there a way I can still make, play and burn playlists? I can't seem to make it work.

Is the entire library on the NAS or just the media folder? For background see Make a split library portable. Note that a shared iTunes library can only be opened by one computer at a time. A shared media folder can be accessed by multiple libraries, however this requires management to make sure that updates are reflected across all libraries.

ITunes Library Sharing + VPN

I'm looking for a way to have my iTunes library without it actually taking up all the space on my Macbook Air's hard drive. I imagine this could be done by storing my files on my Mac mini at home and somehow have that iTunes folder auto-mount onto my Air in the proper home directory so that when I open iTunes I could listen to my music or sync my iPod. Furthermore, I would like to be able to do this from work, school, or anywhere I can access the internet, thus the need for VPN or a similar service.
Can this be achieved with Leopard Server?

I know the VPN part is possible, I'm doing it myself. And I'm trying to setup my iTunes files for use with iTunes on a Windows computer at work so you and I are doing almost the exact same thing.
THe VPN setup is pretty straightforward in Leopard Server, I'm struggling now, though, with the actual sharing of the correct drive and getting the XP box to mount it.

Delete songs from iTunes Library/Hard Drive directly from iTunes

I have my library setup so that all the music is added to the music folder and then I add to the library manually in iTunes. I would like to go through and delete some songs from my library but I would also like them to be deleted from hard drive. Typically I will left click the song, click show in finder, cmd-delete in finder, and then cmd-delete in iTunes. Since I need to do this for 100s of songs in my library, it would be nice if I could directly delete from the hard drive and library inside iTunes. If anyone knows of any features, scripts, or what have you that I could do this, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your help!

First you need to make sure that the music files you want to delete are in the itunes music folder (you can relocate this in the advanced section of iTunes preferences). If the files are in a different folder, deleting them will only remove them from the itunes library, but not delete the files from the hard drive.
Open itunes and select the songs you want to delete.
If you are looking at them in an iTunes playlist, then hold the option key and press the delete key.
If you are looking at them in the iTunes library, just press the delete key.
You should get a popup asking if you want to delete the song(s) from your iTunes library. If they are songs purchased from the iTunes Store, you might also get a question about deleting them from iCloud. Select delete song and you should then get another popup asking if you want to move the selected song(s) to the trash. Select delete song. Once you empty the trash they should no longer be in the finder or the iTunes library.

ITunes library sharing

I have an iMac, my wife has a MacBook Pro. What is the best way for her to be able to access my iTunes library? Do I push everything to the Cloud? Or should I be trying to figure out home "sharing" more?.
Shde can access everything that was bought on iTunes already, but there are other files, homemade on iMovie for example, that she can not. Obviously I could transfer via firewire or even memory stick, but I am trying to figure a way where the file is only on one machine but usable by both.
I guess my starter question is:
A) Cloud or B) Sharing
once we get that answered, my question will be "How?"

well, isn't that lovely? I use computers at multiple locations, and it would only make sense that I would like to be ablle to add to my pod wherever I am without destroying that which I have already created. hmmmmmm...wonder what apple has to say about this. might the reply be, "precisely"?

Itunes library sharing on single Mac Pro with 2 users.

Recently I have setup a Mac Pro with 2 users. Primarily the thought was to have this as the media server for a couple of AppleTV (2nd generation) and other users. The primary user on the Mac Pro (me), has the iTunes Library located in the Public Directory. Home sharing is enabled, on all systems. There is no problem when the Primary user is logged in and iTunes is running. When the second user, logs into the Mac Pro, nobody has access to the iTunes Library of the primary user.
I was thinking of setting up the secondary user with the same itunes directory, but when new content is added by the primary user, the secondary user would not see it automatically, would they?
Basically I am trying to set up a common iTunes library for all users and all devices. Is it possible

I recently moved some of my older tv series purchases to an external hard drive as my iTunes library hard drive was getting full. Now, when I connect my iPhone and iPad to iTunes, I get the message that my iphone is synced with another library! Help!

I didn't rename my iTunes library or anything. How can I sync with iTunes without erasing all my apps, app data and settings/messages etc on the iPhone/iPad?

If you moved your iTunes library by simply copying it to another drive, you may not be able to access your music even if you reconnect to that library, you may get a lot of "not found" errors because the music is not where the library thinks it should be. First thing to do is put it back where it was. Then reconnect it. Then follow the steps in this link:

ITunes Library sharing error -3259

Hi
I am trying to share my iTunes library stored on my iMac (Leopard) with a mac mini (10.4.11).
The library name appears in the shared list on the MacMini iTunes but when I click it, it doesn't open up, just hangs until I get an error message saying my library is not responding (-3259). Check that any firewall software running has been set to allow communication on port 3689.
I have checked the firewallon the iMac and it is currently set to allow specific services and applications and iTunes is set to ALLOW.
The only way I can get the library to share properly is to set the firewall to allow ALL incoming connections. This is not right though is it? Does this make my iMac vulnerable to malicious attacks?
Any suggestions please?

I have experience that my Itunes does not open at all....so I cannot even download music from my cd...I am planning on returning my ipod...its new...I just bought it on my birthday...hard to find the answer for this...I download Itunes and Quicktime but will never open...says encountering problem...error message...frustrating!!!

You can probably block the iTunes/Bonjour applications or a couple of ports in Windows Firewall.
These support documents should give you some hints:

TS3448 - iTunes for Windows: Bonjour alert due to firewall, security, or proxy software
Though obviously you'll be looking for ways to create the problem instead of resolve it.
If your organization uses roaming profiles then it is also worth making sure that the user's iTunes libraries are not located within the profile and likewise any iOS device backups are safely redirected to local storage.

Itunes Library sharing with multiple ipods and 2 pc's

Hi, I have a new Ipod nano and want to use my wifes itunes library with my ipod. Which according to the tech stuff I can share the content by enabling on wifes pc. Done that, which I can now see library on my Acer laptop. However, I can't sync my playlist from her pc to my itunes. I want to download my own podcasts etc.. not clutter her itunes pc. When I transfer the ipod back to my pc it then wants to delete and re-sync.
We have 3 ipods in the house and 2 pc's.
Whats the best way of using the ipods and getting the most out of itunes?

If you want to connect and use an iPod on more than one computer or with more than one library you need to change the update preference in the iPod Summary tab to "Manually manage music and videos" and click Apply. The content of iTunes and the iPod are not syncronised in this mode so the two can be different. You can directly access the content of the iPod and play it through iTunes and you can drag and drop whatever you want to the iPod from either library:

Something else to be aware of when using an iPod in manual mode is that the "Do Not Disconnect" message will remain on the display until you physically eject the device: Safely Disconnect IPod

Restore Itunes Library - Hard Drive Crash - from Ipod

I have a very large library of music - Many CD's - I have been able to restore my purchases from Apple store - My Ipod has 80 to 90% of my music on it - I do not wish to have to reload around 100 CDs of music - Is there a way to get the music that is on my Ipod back into my Itunes library without having to reload all my CD - Please I do not want to have to do this from scratch

App duplication in iTunes library shared across two accounts on same iMac

I'm sharing media across two user accounts on a family iMac running Yosemite. The shared content is distributed across folders (Audiobooks, Music, Mobile Applications, etc.) inside Users/Shared/iTunes Music. Both accounts have read and write permissions, and family and home sharing are both turned on and linked to one primary Apple ID. In both accounts iTunes preferences point to the same shared folder. The problem: Updates to mobile applications in one account do not carry over to the other. After updating mobile apps for account A, when I switch to account B, I get the same list of apps awaiting updates. If I update for each account, I find duplicates for each updated app in the shared Mobile Applications folder.
I can avoid the duplication by control-clicking, in the Updates window of iTunes in account B, an app that has already been updated in account A. That will open a dialogue window saying the original file can't be found and asking if I'd like to locate it. When I do, the update disappears from the list in the Updates window. However this is a cumbersome process that I'd think iTunes would perform automatically if it were functioning properly. Has anyone encountered this issue and found a better solution?

What you mean by 'share'.
If you want the other user to be able to see the pics, but not add to, change or alter your library, then enable Sharing in your iPhoto (Preferences -> Sharing), leave iPhoto running and use Fast User Switching to open the other account. In that account, enable 'Look For Shared Libraries'. Your Library will appear in the other source pane.
Any user can drag a pic from the Shared Library to their own in the iPhoto Window.
Remember iPhoto must be running in both accounts for this to work.
If you want the other user to have the same access to the library as you: to be able to add, edit, organise, keyword etc.
Quit iPhoto in both accounts. Move the Library to the Users / Shared Folder
(You can also use an external HD set to ignore permissions, a Disk Image or even partition your Hard Disk.)
In each account in turn: Double click on the Library to open it. (You may be asked to repair the Library Permissions.) From that point on, this will be the default library location. Both accounts will have full access to the library, in fact, both accounts will 'own' it.
However, there is a catch with this system and it is a significant one. iPhoto is not a multi-user app., it does not have the code to negotiate two users simultaneously writing to the database, and trying will cause db corruption. So only one user at a time, and back up, back up back up.

Restoring itunes library when drive letters have changed

I installed a new MB,CPU, and PS and got a new HD and reinstalled WXP pro on my computer. The process changed the letters of my hard drives. (I now have three large HDs.) All the data (library stuff) is still there, it's now has a different drive letter from before. Using the methond of importing using the old library .XML file would work except that itunes can't find the songs. Is there a way to edit the XML file to change the drive letter to the new one? I don't want to have to set up all new playlists.
