ITunes library syncing

Hi,
I have my iPhone and iPad syncingwith my library on my MacBook Air.
A couple of days ago, a friend asked if he could charge his iPad from my Air, so I agreed and plugged it in. This of course loaded iTunes automatically and it started to sync, I cancelled this.
The problem now, is that I want to sync and backup my iPhone. So, I connect it to my Air, but iTunes now states:
"This computer has previously been synced with an iPhone or another iOS device." and prompts me to either a) Set up as a new phone or b) Restore from a backup
Only problem being, my iPhone was last backed up over 2 weeks ago, and a lot has changed on there since.
Do I have a way to resolve this? I wouldn't mind doing a restore to bring things back in line, as long as I have a way of backing up my iPhone first.

Thanks a lot for your reply and help.
Unfortunately when iTunes is on the "Set Up Your iPhone" screen, right clicking on the device in the left hand menu doesn't give the option to backup the device, the only options are "Eject <device_name" and "Restore from backup.."

The frustrating part about the restore is that is seems to be finished when it in fact is not. The restore will look "finish" and your phone will be at the Swipe to Unlock screen. If you swipe and look at your home screen at this point of the restore, you'll see everything is not quite right. While the process seems to be not doing anything just leave the phone attached and do something else for about an hour. This part of the process is not mentioned during the restore operation. I believe there are about two steps to the restore process: 1) restore the phone settings (ringtones, background, notification settings, etc.) and give the user the unlock screen; 2) without letting the user know there is still more to do, begin the slow process of restoring all the music, movies, apps and what not. It's this second step that causes the confusion. Nothing lets you know to wait that process out. I've restored a couple devices from a computer backup and the 2-step process looks the same.

Am unsuccessful getting my iMac iTunes library synced to my iPad and iPhone. all devices are authorized and have latest software. the device icon is not shown in my toolbar as the tutorial indicates. what next?

While you're correct in that Windows media won't sync to the iPhone (or any i-device), the OP states that all the music is in iTunes. If its in iTunes, it would no longer be in Windows media format since it would have been transcoded to whatever the user sets as their import preference (AAC, mp3, etc.), and once that is done then the media should be able to sync to the iPhone just fine.
To Steph, do the missing songs play OK in iTunes? If not then they could be corrupted in some way. If they play fine in iTunes but don't sync, are they unchecked in iTunes? They won't sync to your iPhone if it is set to ignore unchecked items. Finally, if these are iTunes purchases, are they protected format? (i.e. m4p files) If so, is your computer authorized to play them? (you'd know if you try to play them in iTunes, it would prompt you for the account password if not authorized)

I've recently purchase an ipad and am trying to sync it to my macmini. It's copied over the iphoto library, but won't copy the itunes library over. I've spoken to Apple twice today, the first guy told me that if I updated to the latest version of itunes then the sync would work (I updated, but it still didn't work). The second person suggested doing a hard reboot, exiting, restarting, etc and then retrying but that didn't help either. Any suggestions?

When you hook up the device to your Mini, and click on it, you should see the Device Profile with several tabs. Click on the Music tab and make sure it is set up to Sync your music.

Why won't my iTunes library sync to my new iPhone 4s?

I recently got a new iPhone 4s and I tried to sync my music from my iTunes library onto my music library on my 4s. But when my laptop said the sync was complete I checked my 4s and my music wasn't there. I then went to the iTunes store on my 4s and tried to download all of my songs from there but again, I checked my library and it was empty. My iTunes is updated to the newest version and my songs transfer onto my iPad right away with no problems so I don't see why there is a problem with my iPhone. I have tried manually putting the songs on my iPhone but that didn't work either. If anyone has any suggestions please let me know as this is a very annoying problem.

When receiving a sync session failed to start alert, I would recommend closing all open applications in multitasking, power cycling the device and restarting iTunes. Attempt the sync again after processing these steps.

Ipod versus itunes library sync

Hi. I have approx 425 songs on my ipod but in my itunes library i only have a very small amount. They were there recently on this computer but seem to have disappeared. How do I get the songs on my ipod to library?

If you want to delete songs from iTunes and keep them on the iPod you need to change the update option of your iPod to "manually manage music and videos". Your iPod will not sync with iTunes in this mode so it can have different content, you can get details here:

Something else to be aware of when using an iPod in manual mode is that the "Do Not Disconnect" message will remain on the display until you physically eject the device. In that case use Safely Remove Hardware icon in the Windows system tray on your desktop or check this link: Safely Disconnect IPod

Streaming photos from main itunes library (syncing library)

I have synced my AppleTV (40G) with my main computer and iTunes library - this works fine. But since my iTunes & Photo libraries are larger than the space on my AppleTV I wanted to stream the rest of the content including photos from this same computer. Unfortunately, the extra photos are not streamed. I must be missing something. Recommendations?

on this same point, I am trying to stream movies from my mini to my tv but want to sync photos from the same mini to the same tv. it appears that i can only sync or only stream but not both from the same source. am i doing something wrong?

Multi user mode in windows & itunes library sync

I moved my itunes music from my personal folder to shared documents folder & can not sync my ipod anymore. All my music is on my ipod as well as on the shared folder itunes library but itunes now opens with no music & I can not sync automatically.

This article in the Apple Knowledge Base describes the steps you should have taken in changing the location of your iTunes Music folder.
Is it possible for you to backtrack the steps you took and then follow those instructions?

It scares me but hould I let my iTunes library sync to my iPhone if....

I'm not sure how to explain this: I have had my iTunes library on my desktop pc forever...since my iPod 8+ years. I now have an iPhone 4S and Apple TV. Well I have had my iPhone for a year now and I have been afraid to sync it to my computer in iTunes library bc it always asks if I want my phone to change my library to reflect it like over ride it. But it doesn't say those words. Hopefully someone will know what it says?
Anyways, now I want to bc I just got my Apple TV & I want everything I have on my computer to be on my phone. Also I have the Apple TV remote app so I have to home share.
It scares me to say yes or proceed bc what's on my phone is not whats on my computer & visa versa.
I really need help so if I'm not explaining this well please let me know and I will attempt sync again & get the exact wording the pop up box says.

ITunes library syncs grey to iPhone 4s

Forgive my ignorance on this. I did not use iTunes prior to getting an iPhone 4s.
I HAD music on my iPhone 4s no problem using the autofill feature from my netbook. I recently purchased a new laptop and my music was transferred from my netbook to my laptop. I decided to clear out my iPhone and resync it to my new laptop. That is, apparently, an impossible task for me.
When using the autofill feature- even from a blank iphone- it did not transfer all songs. As a result- I started looking around at tutorials and realized I should use the sync function. I told my phone to delete the itunes sync with my netbook and sync it with my laptop. It went through it's steps- now every single song is grey on my iphone 4s list and unplayable from my phone. My phone claims I have 0 music.
All songs play perfectly from the laptop. I even deleted the entire itunes library and readded it to itunes. I then tried to sync again. All grey. I am at a loss as to what I am doing wrong, I don't understand why autofill worked perfectly from a netbook and now I can't transfer a single song from a laptop.
How can I fix this?

I bought an iPhone 5 and could not add music to it. Same problem: grey songs. After hours searching forums and blogs I found this solution. Works for me! Now I manually add songs using iTunes and no problem. Hope it helps.
1. Download and install iExplorer http://www.macroplant.com/iexplorer/
2. Plug in device first, then open iExplorer
3. Delete the iPhone\Media\iTunes_Control folder (you may want to copy this, just in case)
4. Restart the iPhone / iPad
5. Start iTunes. Not restore iPhone from back up, select New iPhone (don't worry, you will not lost apps or data on your iPhone doing this)
6. Add music manually with iTunes

Dont let the ATV go to hibernate, leave it on, otherwise it will loose the connection to your PC. Just switch the homesharing off and then on again, ought to do it.

Time Capsule - iTunes Library Sync

Does anybody know how can I sync my iTunes library with my Time Capsule?
I made a backup of my iTunes library by copying "iTunes File" to my Time Capsule. Now, every time I make a new purchase from iTunes, I have to add it manually to the Time Capsule "iTunes File". Is there a way that this can be done automatically?

I'm still not sure what you're trying to do. If you want to back up your iTunes library, just let Time Machine do that. That way you won't have to copy anything manually. At the same time, you should delete from the Time Capsule disk any file that you copied there manually. It's not good to use any disk volume where Time Machine stores its backups for other purposes. By design, Time Machine will eventually consume all available space no its output volume, which will cause trouble for the other files.

Itunes library sync problems. Purchased items only music that syncs.

Itunes library problems syncing. Purchased items from apple all syncing. Progressively losing ability to listen to my CD's I've loaded myself. ie: library music or store bought CD's. Some albums unplayable and some albums only a few songs playable. It's almost as if apple has decided that if I don't buy from them I won't be able to play it. New problem this week only. Cant fix despite frequent attempts to sync ipod. Library seems to be freezing or something at stage 7/7 of syncing items in library.

what computer are you using? if it a windows computer make sure you update your itunes version to 11.1.2
are you able to play the songs from your computer?
try this go to edti> preference> devices > at the bottom click the reset sync histore and choose ok close itunes pull up a new one and try if it work

Why doesn't my itunes library sync songs I've purchased with an old Apple id?

Hello all,
I've recently bought a replacement laptop, running Windows 7 & had my music library transferred from my old P.C successfully.
When I sync my ipod over 700 songs don't sync, but they're all available to play from the library.
At a glance it would appear the majority of these songs I've purchased from the itunes store at some point.
I'm advised that I will need to log in to the old itunes id to authorise this computer, but this is not possible as the email address has been deleted.
I contacted the bank from which the account was used to purchase these songs & the only debit card details they had on file were not the correct card.
So, where do I go from here? This is my music that I purchased legitimately from the itunes store & I want it all on my ipod which again, was legitimately purchased from Apple.
Any advice will be greatly appreciated!

You should have just switched the email address on your apple id to your new one, instead of creating an entirely new apple id.
But, go to appleid.apple.com and try to reset your password using the security questions method, instead.
If can't reset it via the email or security question method, then you have to call Apple: http://support.apple.com/kb/HE57
