ITunes Library too large - options

Hi there
I'm looking for some suggestions to help me free up some much needed space on my MacBook.  I have a MacBook Pro Retina with 512GB with a 64GB Nifty Minidrive but I'm running out of space.  My iTunes library is taking up over 330GB in music alone (it's mainly music and some apps as I don't have too many videos).
I've done some reading on the web and as far as I can tell I have 3 main options:
Move the entire library to an external drive
I've done this before (many years ago) and I recall having permanent issues with files if I accidentally tried to access the file if drive not available.  Also, I'd like to have at least some of my content with me (i.e. I don't want to have to carry an external drive with me all the time or have to have web access to listen or transfer media)
Move part of the library to an external drive
I think this is my preferred option.  I've read several articles about people moving their video content on to an external drive.  Unfortunately for me I don't have much video content so I would be looking to move some of my audio content away.  I was thinking of moving the compilations (currently 130GB) but I don't know how this will work should I choose to add a compilation album later?  I presume I would have to add to iTunes and then manually move it across to the external drive.  I'm thinking things could get messy!
Create a second library, located on an external drive
This is a bit like option 2 but from what I can tell it means you can no longer have music from both libraries on the same iDevice.  Is that correct?  It also has the pitfalls of having to maintain the two locations so I've discounted this unless anyone can see why this is a good option.
I'd like to hear your comments to the above or any additional suggestions you might have.  I don't want to buy a new Mac just yet (will definitely get a much larger drive next time).  Just so you know, I have Amazon Cloudplayer but as I'm in the UK I can't access this from the Mac app (can access via web and iDevices though).  I have around 50,000 tracks so iTunes Match and Google Play aren't viable options for me.  I have Dropbox but I only use this for documents and photo backup.  I also have 2 x WD My Cloud network drives at home for backup, remote access and for my Sonos system.    Thanks.

Spotty comments/observations:
If adding an item to iTunes, hold down the option key while dragging the item to iTunes.  It will leave the item in its original location.
I have multiple libraries (mostly for testing).  However, I manage my own media.  One potential issue with multiple libraries is if you use iTunes "copy media to media folder" checked (default setting) and you have one library on the external and the other on the internal drive, iTunes still only uses the same set of preferences settings.  In other words, your media for one library end up going to the wrong place.  Of course you can do as I do which is manage my own media, but that's something to consider.  To be honest, I don't know what happens if you leave "copy to" unchecked but "organize" checked.  I have always from day one had both unchecked.  It puts the onus of managing media on me but it also means I can have media wherever I like.
Yes, iTunes has conniptions when an item on an external is disconnected.  However, it is usually relatively easy to remedy the situation by quitting iTunes, turning the device on, then starting iTunes again.  If your whole library is on an external drive and iTunes defaults back to the internal drive, start iTunes with the option key held down and point it to the external.
Look into iTunes Match for travel use.  However, with 300 GB of music that may mean you have more than 25,000 tracks.  I guess Apple figures not many people can afford $100,000 of music (or even $10,000 if it's in lossless files) and don't accommodate for that in Match.

SEt the iTunes library to a new drive.
It will still use the songs in the old location but new stuff will go to the new location.

  • Itunes library too large and won't recognize all files, just new ones but

still shows the old ones and their location in the library. I was keeping the library on the 2TB external drive. It got too large. Now I want to put the music on one of the 1TB drives and just the videos on the 2TB drive. From my PC, I can watch everything.
I cannot download to an iPod or iTouch anything from the 2TB drive. When I hit max capacity, I temporarily started saving on one of my internal 2TB drives (space wh*re, I know)before I hit on what my solution would be, and now I can only download from that location. Why?
What can I do? I even tried switching the library location back, and it won't recognize anything. I'm screwed, and I have all this material... YEARS of collecting...
    Someone please help me...

To clarify, currently on the 2TB external drive are music and videos. I want to split them up and hopefully save some space - and maybe foresee problems in the future when I hit max capacity on the 1TB external, and think about a 4GB (not the best option I see at this time) or another 2 2TB drives.
Doesn't the Library file just save locations when iTunes closes down so everything should be OK? I mean, the prog can recognize everything, it just won't download to anything, even if I move from the external drive an older movie to the new drive, it refuses to "see" the movie so I can download it.

  • ITunes library too large? (Video and Audio)

    iTunes 11.3.1
    Apple TV 3 iOS 6.2 (6698.99.50.31)
My iTunes library is very close to filling my 3TB external HDD. It includes music, TV Shows, Movies, podcasts, etc. I have 3 main problems.
The most annoying is when something is wrong with my internet, it takes forever to start streaming TV Shows and Movies. Up to 5 minutes to begin or more. With music files, it starts immediately. This is all taking place on my home network. My server is a Mac mini and it is sitting less than 4 feet from the Apple TV 3. When the internet is functioning fine, however, streaming usually begins within a few seconds. Nothing changes with the local network, only the connection to the internet. This should not affect streaming from iTunes to the Apple TV, but it does.
Updating metadata is a royal pain. Sometimes (and there seems to be no pattern), updating metadata takes 5-10 minutes per file, and if the track (on a playlist) changes during this process, the next file will not start streaming until the metadata finally finishes writing. This happens whether or not an image is included in the metadata change. Sometimes, it changes right away. It's maddening when I'm doing it because I have to stop what people in the household are watching to get it going again by force quitting iTunes.
The video library, especially the movie library, has gotten to where it only sporadically shows the artwork in the iTunes library. If it doesn't show up there, there is a very good chance that it doesn't show up in the Apple TV as well. If I leave iTunes alone than the artwork for the movies on the screen eventually show up, but it might take hours. Then the next time I go in and look, it has lost much of the artwork for the movies again. However, Get Info shows the artwork is actually still there, as does third party metadata tag editors. The artwork is there, but it will not show up on about half of the movie library, and it isn't always the same movies.
These problems seem to be happening more and more the larger the library grows. I have thought about making multiple libraries, however, all libraries need to remain online so the Apple TV can access them all. If this is the problem causing the above issues, the only thing I know to do is to divide the library into multiples and run them all on different.
Now, this machine also runs OS X Server, with the File Sharing, DHCP and DNS servers all running. If this isn't a result of the almost 3TB library size, could it be that the machine is overloaded?
Thanks for your help and advice in advance,
    Scott

  • Library too large error.

I was running tight on space on both my library and vault drives, so I referenced a bunch of masters to a third drive. The library drive now has plenty of space and the application has actually sped up. However, I'm not able to back up the vault. The drives are the same size and I'm getting a Library too large error message for the vault drive. Is there a trick I'm missing, or do I need to delete and recreate the vault?
    Thanks for the help!

OneDrive for Business/SkyDrive Pro has a 5000 item limit per Library. There is no workaround, other than reducing the number of items.

when trying to open itunes red x box opens with "new itunes library". No options provided

Sorry reply is only to say  "ditto" except for iPod involvement.  I can't repair iTunes, can't access it when in programs/features
Any other suggestions out there?  I tried reinstall, no difference.  Had latest version anyway.  Only thing different I did the last time I was able to get into iTunes was listen to radio streams. ??????

  • Updated now library too large

I just updated to the newest iphone os last night and now the library (photos, music, contacts, apps etc.) is 2.8gigs too large! How did that happen and how can I undo whatever happened? The phone can't complete the sync now, it locks up itunes. Is restore the only option?

Get a large, fast external drive and put your library there, and bring it with you. Also have an up-to-date backup that you leave back at your home or office.

  • Photos library too large

Photos is telling me I cannot import anything as my library is too large.  I want to split the library up, but I cannot add a second library to the new Photos for OS X app.  Nothing happens when opening the app while holding down "option".
    Thanks

Photos can handle up to 1 million image files.  How much free space do you have on the drive where your Photos Library is located?

  • Library too large

I use photos professionally but my Aperture Library is now becoming too large for my Hard-drive on my Macbook Air.  I need to be able to take my Macbook with me at times to work on these photos.  What's the best way for me to do this?  I also have this library backed up to a vault on the same hard drive which seems silly.  What's the best way for me to manage things without losing the functionality to work on the photos within a single library?  I thought about splitting things into multiple libraries but then if I have a recent photo that belongs with an old photo and should reside within the same project.

  • ITunes library too big - what to do?

My iTunes library is quickly approaching the 2 TB mark and filling my Time Capsule. What can I do?
Is there a way to spread an iTunes library over multiple hard drives but have iTunes treat it as one giant library still (meaning I don't have to switch between accounts or break up the library?). I have a lot of video content and want it to work seamlessly with my original Apple TV (streaming video content over WiFi) so breaking it all up is not a good option.
What is the best solution? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

I assume you're not using the Time Capsule to store the library...I tried that once and while it works, sometimes the drive is so asleep that it doesn't access all the media right away and you get the exclamation points.
I'm using a Drobo firewired into a Mac Mini, myself. I store the movies/TV on the Drobo, which right now is at 6TB (expandable to 10TB at least), and has its own redundancy and drive health checking. The rest is stored on the Mac Mini and Time Machine backs that up.
I will say the best enhancement iTunes could make for folks like us is to have a default folder, but for each media type (music, movie, TV show, etc) allow you to override the default. Right now when I download a new video source, I delete the reference from the library, move the file to my Drobo, then copy it back in holding down the Option key (which overrides the auto-move when you tell it to keep your library organized).

  • ITunes Library too big - how to fit on Mini?

My iTunes library got too big, and I got the message saying "you don't have any more room on the Mini so we'll make you a playlist and put some cool songs in that list". I said okay, and went to work. When I got home, I figured I'd delete some stuff to make the library smaller. And I deleted the playlist that iTunes made! DOH!
I have tried uninstalling, reinstalling, resetting. When I try to synch I get the message "we can't move anything because the playlists you want to move don't exist". So I tried making new playlists. That didn't work.
    Any ideas?

    hi Jorgi!
folks get that message when they have "automatically update selected playlists only" selected in their itunes "ipod" preference tab.
plug in the ipod, and wait until it shows up in the sourcelist. go "edit > preferences" and click the "ipod" tab.
under "automatically update selected playlists only", there's a list of playlists. deselect any (in the preference tab) that no longer exist (in your sourcelist), and select the ones you want to sync to the mini.
    love, b

  • Aperture crashing - Library too large?

It would be greatly appreciated if someone can give me a few suggestions. I've been editing a wedding in Aperture for about 4 hours when suddenly aperture crashed. Every time I reopen, it opens and looks like it is processing previews and then crashes within 5 seconds. I have run a consistency check and rebuilt the library to no avail.
I am afraid my library has gotten too large and could be contributing to the problem. The library currently weighs in at 139GB. I typically try to keep the library size below 50GB but have been too busy to clean up my system recently. Stupid me. Could this be the problem, and if so, how do I manage my files if I can't open aperture?
    Thanks,
    Ryan

Thanks to everyone for all the help. After speaking with someone at apple, I had to copy my library to an external drive, restore to a new library, check to make sure all the images were there, and then I was able to delete the backup copy. One issue I encountered was that a few thumbnails wouldn't load. After some exploration I found that these were referenced files that had been moved from there original locations and not reconnected with aperture. After relocating the original files, everything works perfectly.
Aside from this being a huge waist of time, everything worked out okay.

  • Time Machine iTunes Library too big for new Macbook Air

My Macbook Pro went out of commission some time ago, I was fortunate enough to be able to get a Macbook Air to replace it. I had a Time Machine backup of all my old files on an external hard drive, however I had quite an extensive music library that is far too large for my current storage. I do have a backup computer with Windows 7. Is there some way I can access my full music library (over 200 gb) on a different computer through the Time Machine backup or in some fashion so I can put the music I want onto my new computer?

  • I seem to have lost "list view" for my iTunes library.  The option doen't even appear on the view drop down.  Any conncection to iCloud?

I seem to have lost the ability to select list view for my iTunes library.  The choice for lst view doesn't even appear on the drop down when selectiogn "view".  Any ideas?  I recently enabled the cloud and subscribed to iTunes Match/  Any connection?  Thanks/

See this thread for background on why iTunes can end up with duplicates and how they can be systematically removed. The script there is for Windows users and the "show duplicates" menus have moved around in iTunes 11,  but the advice on clearing recently made duplicates should still hold.
As given in my older post "Reorganize library" is meant as a one time command to change the structure of a pre-iTunes 9 library into the newer layout that places music in its own subfolder of the media folder. Once used, if the option becomes available again that suggests that a file called .iTunes Preferences.plist in the media folder has been deleted or editied.

  • Pause Backup of itunes library, too many DVDs for one sitting?

The backup of my itunes library will take 8 DVDs. Is there a way to pause it, so that I don't have to do it in one sitting? Or choose to do a partial backup now, and then continue later? What would happen if I only had time to do 2 DVDs today, could I come back later and continue, or would I have to start all over again?
    Thank you for your help.

Thank you very much for your reply. I am using "Backup" in applications. I am not sure if this is a feature of my .mac account or if it came with my computer.
Is using iTunes to backup better? I have not seen a feature in Backup to choose to backup portions of my library, but you are saying that backing up in iTunes, has this feature?
    Thanks again.
