ITunes Lite

Is there a lite version of iTunes? I am talking about a stripped down version... does nothing but play music, playlist and videos. I don't care about album art, I don't want genius no nothing. Just Play Stop and Shuffle.
I seem to keep having problems with iTunes running slow, taking forever to start up or freezing on me. (and its not something wrong with my computer because I have never ever had a problem with anything else. not one issue.)
So I was wondering if there was a lite version of iTunes that I can just start up real quick and play a song without taking up a lot of CPU speed or memory.
Or maybe someone has a simple alternative to iTunes that they could recommend.

No, there is no "light" version of iTunes. There are other players that can handle music - just look for something that can handle AAC, unless you've been importing your CDs as another format, and have been converting any tracks you purchase from the iTunes Store. But only iTunes (or QuickTime Player) can play most videos from the iTunes Store; with the exception of most music videos, videos and movies from the iTunes Store are copy-protected and so cannot be played in other applications.
Perhaps if you start a new topic detailing your system and your problems, someone here can help you sort things out. I have iTunes installed on several Windows systems, including two with Windows 7, and have had no problems, though with so many possible configurations it's by no means unlikely that something may be conflicting.
Regards.

• ITUNES LITE PLEASE

Spyware + ituneshelper + quicktime + IPOD what for I do not need it !
If I wanted to buy a Ipod I would have done so 2 years ago.
Would Apple please be so kind as to provide a Itunes only version with no "spyware" ituneshelper or Quicktime and please no Ipod stuff.
I only want a Itunes music player with a visuaizer or maybe do it "ITUNES LITE"
I only need Internet radio + music Library + Visualizer as all the music bought on ITUNES was lost when my Pbook died.
So obviously I will not buy from Itunes again as Insurance will not pay for lost Itunes downloads even though I have the reciept of online purchase.

I will never use Quicktime
You use QuickTime every time you use iTunes. As I said before, QuickTime provides all the actually playback services; iTunes is basically just the storage and display application. So again, no QuickTime, no iTunes. Presuming you're running a Windows system (you're in the iTunes for Windows forum, though your profile indicates you're on a Mac), you can remove the QT icon from the task bar; go to the QuickTime control panel, select the Advanced tab, and uncheck the box at the bottom of the window.
As to a Spybot search, I don't see what that has to do with anything, since neither QuickTime nor iTunes, as I said, contain any spyware. Once again, the only information that gets sent to Apple is through the iTunes Ministore window, and all you have to do is turn that off. And since you said you don't care if information is sent to Apple, I don't see what your problem is here.
The "does nothing" only applies to the iPodHelper.exe; once again, QuickTime is absolutely necessary for iTunes to work.

• I need to restore my iTunes lit file after a hard drive wipe

My laptop was stolen and wiped, but I ended up getting it back. I'm a DJ and manage my music through iTunes and stupidly had not backed up for several months. I've recovered all my files, and am trying to recover my latests itl file so I get my most current version of my playlists back. Problme is, when the frive was wiped, all the itl files lost their names and date created info, and I seem to have over 35 of them. I figured the largest file would be to most recent, but that is not the case. Any ideas on how I can find the most recent itl file out of this group? they range in size from a 65 kb to 45 mb,
Thanks

Well, other is all your personal data. So you'll need to go through that and delete a lot. Also, if you're using a laptop local snapshots may be taking up space in backups.
If you run TM you don't really need local snapshots so if you need the disk space you can disable them in Terminal with this command...
sudo tmutil disablelocal
To undo this, rerun it with "enablelocal" instead of "disablelocal".
Most folks using a small flash drive will keep only the system on that drive and use another larger drive for everything else. It sounds like you need another disk.. but what type Mac are you on?

• Folder view in iTunes

Is there a way to browse my music files in a folder view rather than one huge list?
I just added about 4000 .mp3 files to my library (first time using iTunes) and the only way I know of to add songs to my iPod is to scroll through this huge list where half the files are named "Track 01". I've already got all these files nicely sorted on my hard drive.
I'm using the ipod shuffle. Is there a way to simply drag and drop files from my hard drive onto the ipod without using iTunes? That would be my preferred solution.
Thank you.

Somewhat of a workaround. I can create a new playlist in iTunes and drag/drop files from Windows Explorer to the playlist. Then select all on the playlist and select "add to iPod".
Also, must I submit my credit card info to register my iPod? The only thing I want to use iTunes for is to add/remove my existing songs to/from the iPod. Is there a better tool for this that isn't as bloated? Like iTunes Lite or something that only contains the minimal of features?

• ITunes 6 screen messed up

I recently installed iTunes 6, having used iTunes 4 for some time now without too many problems. I immediately noticed that the screen updating doesn't really work at all.
When I minimize the window to background and do something else, and later restore it, sometimes the text is all messed up. It looks like it prints two or three layers of text on each row, making everything unreadable. I have to minimize/maximize the window a few times to be able to see what is going on.
Another problem is browsing albums. When I click on the different songs, sometimes it suddenly displays a rating for the song it didn't have a second earlier, and a while later it shows a different one. I was rating a few CDs I just imported, one being Queen's A Night at The Opera. I listened to the songs, rated half of them, and suddenly noticed Bohemian Rhapsody having 5 stars even though I hadn't touched it. I clicked it, clicked another song, and the rating was empty. I went through 2 other songs, and suddenly BR had rating of 3 stars. Again I clicked on it, and it emptied.
What guarantee do I have that the ratings I have saved so far actually stay? I've done lots of work to import my CD collection to iTunes, and if all that work is lost, I will get rid of every single piece of Apple software and hardware I've ever had and curse the whole company to the depths of lower ****.
--Owner of 800+ legally bought, original CDs, all imported to iTunes

This is an unbelievable work-around, and solves my problem, albeit temporarily.
My biggest issue is that I run iTunes as a jukebox on an old PC from PC's, wireless tablets that run Remote Desktop Protocol, and Macs, and now my iPhone via the Remote app.
This color problem is an issue when using RDP at all from PC's or the tablets I use.
It is a royal pain in my butt! The only reason I updated iTunes is for the iPhone remote, and that messed up everything as far as these absurd color issues. RDP will not "serve" at 32 bit color depth unless you are running a server version, which is overkill and expensive for this application!
I really do not need all of the bloated features that Apple has introduced into iTunes, and was quiet happy running V6 for years, which is very small and simple.
It also bugs me that Apple keeps removing useful buttons like EQ, and Browser view, which I used all of the time!
Who makes these decisions?
What we need is another iTunes "Lite" version for applications such as this, when you just want to run iTunes as a Jukebox app. iTunes is by far the best music interface there is.
Why does adding bloated features and updates have to keep removing everyday useful functions?
I would be very happy running Version 6, with the added feature of support for the Remote app for the iPhone/iPod touch.
It seems to me that base on this marvelous workaround which has prompted my reply, that it would be a very simple matter for Apple to make a minor patch or fix that enables lower color depth functionality. It worked before!
Apple, are you listening?
Do you ever read these postings?
Quit meddling with what works for the sake of changes that no one cares about!!

• ITunes is getting to be like Windows, Don't use before SP2

I refuse to download the latest upgrade for now. I have had installation problems from past downloads and they were Apple software related, not user induced problems. And I see that is true for the latest update. Apple is causing consumer resentment by distributing buggy software(Do you ever hear a kind word about Microsoft). The latest update is up to 65MB providing features that many of us can't use or support for products we don't own or won't use, but cause errors and disfuntionality. Can't we have an "iTunes Lite" that just supports iPods and its functions? Or at least give us the option to choose which products to support or services we want by providing check boxes to decide which software choices to download.

• ITunes 7.7 Ipod Service Error

So I am trying to install the new iTunes. During installation I get this error:

By the way, my OS is Windows Vista Ultimate. I have administrative permissions on my computer, and I ran the iTunes installer in Admin mode. Even though at the top is says "iTunes Lite" I get the same error when trying to install iTunes from apple.com
Please help, thanks in advance.

Hmmmm. What's the precise text of the message you get mentioning the iPod Service? There's a couple that i'm familiar with, but the way you describe your error makes it sound a bit different from those ones.

• Any Chance for a Simpler iTunes

I have purposely stuck with iTunes 8 on several machines.  Version 9 and 10 were just too overweight.  Especially the iTunes Store.  In versions from 4 up through 8, I could easily browse the store, quickly sort on any number of fields to find music, and buy it.  Now that I was forced to move to 10, the store is pretty hard to use.  Search results live in little subwindows of the main screen, with lots of unnecessary stuff surrounding it.  Its hard and very slow to sort, which I do when I'm looking for cover songs by different artists.  Due to its pokiness, I have only done the upgrade on one machine, which prevents me from spontaneously buying songs when listening on other machines.
I would like a more lightweight version of iTunes, something more like the older versions.  Even a separate, iTunes Lite version.  I am a music buyer, usually finding music by internet radio, friends, public venues, etc.  The new version has made it harder to spend money on music.

Suggestions to Apple will be best submitted through the iTunes feedback page. Your comments will be most likely to get to the proper people within Apple that way.
Regards.

• What is best to do before I upgrade my mac mini to leopard?

Im waiting for my Mac OS X Leopard 10.5 to come in the mail and I wanted to do a clean install but I have alot of important softwares that can't be replaced, how do I back up my mac mini G4 1.42 ghz 80gb HD? I don't have an external hard drive to back up with but I do have an 80gb iPod classic that I was hoping to use.

Yes John, you can do that. I used iTunes well before I got my iPod and found it to be very useful. You can also browse Podcasts (and listen to them of course if you have net connection) as well as listen to radio streams (dito..). Once you get your iPod, you can then choose whether to transfer your songs from your computer into your iPoid either automatically or manually (manually, by dragging them in whatever folder called Playlists that you've created).
There is a PC version of iTunes and a Mac version as well. But there is only one kind of iTunes. In other words, if you have a PC, then there is only one version of iTunes available to you (no iTunes "Lite" or whatever...). And the current version is compatible with videos, music and "the whole works" as you put it. If someone does not have the new iPod (called iPod 5G - for Fifth Generation - or video iPod) then one would just not use the video part of iTunes, that's all. Everything else functions as per normal otherwise.

• Itunes with quicktime lite

hi all
I haven't updated since 7.4.3.1 this runs well, I updated a while ago and it was a horror as eveyone knows.
How is the latest update for windows version?
I wanted to get rid of quicktime and use quicktime lite.
I have been using real player without the problems i had with the updated
version of quicktime.
Question is does the ipod have any problems with quicktime lite and what
version of quicktime lite should I download?

I think Quicktime Lite is a variant of Quicktime alternative and that has caused a lot of trouble with incompatible codecs causing crashes.
This tends to crop up whenever a new version of iTunes/Quicktime is released.
Personally I would steer clear of it ... but that's just my opinion.

• Updating my iPod Touch failed and now the screen is permanently lit with a white Apple logo above what appeares to be a download indicator bar. Now totally unresponsive and non-detectable by iTunes or my PC!

Hi, Can anyone help. Updating my iPod via iTunes failed and now shows a permanently lit screeen witrh a white apple logo above what appears to be an empty download bar indicator.
Neither iTunes or my PC will recognise or detect it wehen commected to the USB port.
All iPod buttons are responsive, including diagnostics mode (Menu+Sleep buttons).
Any ideas/suggestions?

Hi IIIaass
That's sorted it, thanks.
I don't think I actually managed to get it into DFU mode, although not too sure what that is, but following Karthik's advice and although not quite getting the response from my iPod, as it suggested, it eventually came up with the USB piccy and iTunes icon. From there on everything fell into place and it is currently Synching with iTunes after having done a restore.
Bravo !!

Sounds like the hold switch is broken, meaning you'll need to have your iPod serviced/replaced either by Apple or a third party repair company.
