ITunes locating Movies on External Hard Drive

Hi All,
I have a manually managed iTunes library. My movies are stored on an external hard drive and are referenced files in iTunes. Every time I disconnect my external hard drive I obviously get an exclamation mark near the movie, because the file cannot be located. But when I re-connect the hard drive, the exclamation marks stay near the files, unless I play a file or get info for a file while the external hard drive is connected, the exclamation mark stays. Is there a way to get them to re-appear as I re-connect my external hard drive? Thanks.
Nick

Found the solution: quit iTunes, turn on HDD, then restart iTunes as HDD is on, and all the exclamation marks will disappear!

  • ITunes library move to external hard drive

Hi guys, I am wondering if u can help me, I have run out of room on my laptop, its 5yrs old and capacity of 100gb. I have recently tried to upgrade my iPhone to the iOS 5 but alas, I don't have any room to do so.
So I have copied my music library across to an external hard drive, changed my iTunes library to search for the music to where the files are kept on the external hard drive and consolidated the library ( basically everything that the apple support forum told me to do)
However , when I click a song to play on iTunes, the exclamation Mark pops up and I need to physically locate each track back to where it is in the file in the external hard drive.
Is there an easier way to do this?? Any help would be great thanks
    Peter

Did you use iTunes to copy the mosic or did you manually copy the folders to the external drive?
I used iTunes to moemy music folder to a new 1 tb drive and it worked perfectly.  I have had an issue with some iTunes updates reverting back to the original location and then need to go back through the steps again.

  • Can I and how do I transfer my Itunes location to an external hard drive...

My computer it running out of space mainly because of my itunes library. A couple of questions. Can I transfer the location of the library and account to an external hard drive and how can I do this so the default will be the external hard drive and not my computer? (Side note - I am using a portable Seagate external hard drive for this.) Thank you for you assistance with this.

Right-click any song in iTunes, locate it in the Windows Explorer, navigate up to the iTunes folder, drag it over, launch iTunes with the Shift key held down, and point it there.

  • HT1751 Followed instructions on how to consolidate iTunes library, move to external hard drive and restore library back up but my iTunes is still empty.

Recently bought a new macbook pro and obviously the first thing I want to do is move over my itunes library from my PC and keep my playcount.
The instructions I followed are here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1751?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
As I got down to Step 7 in 'Restoring your iTunes Library backup', I chose my iTunes library file and waited for everything to be restored but then nothing came up on my iTunes. My iTunes is still empty.
Is there perhaps another way for me to transfer my iTunes library and my playcount will still be retained? Help on this would be greatly appreciated.

  • I need to move my iTunes library to an external hard drive

I need to move my iTuns library to an external hard drive in order to free up space on my macbook pro.  I've checked the external hard drive & it is playing my iTunes fine. I've moved the iTunes folder on my macbook to the trash can.  Is there anything else I need to do before emptying it from the trash can?

Sounds like you are OK. Be sure to open iTunes then preferences. Click on Advanced icon in toolbar. Set the path to your media folder in the field where you should see the path to the original location. Or, you can hold down the OPTION key while starting iTunes and choosing the library you wish to use.
This should be it. If all is working well delete the data in the Trash. Now, if it were me I would have a backup somewhere just in case. Better safe than sorry.

  • ITunes Doesn't Delete Movies From External Hard Drive

I have all of my iTunes media on an external hard drive. However, when I just tried to delete a movie (from within iTunes), it removed the movie from iTunes, but the actual mpeg file is still on my external hard drive. Is there something I'm doing wrong, or am I going to have to manually delete content from external hard drive? Thanks.

When you delete an item from your iTunes library, iTunes will give you the option to delete the file too, but *only for items that are located in your iTunes Media folder.* So, assuming your iTunes Media folder is on your local drive, what you are seeing is the correct behavior.
The best procedure in this case is to right-click the track in iTunes, choose Show in Finder, and delete the file within Finder. Then go back to iTunes and delete the track from the library.

  • Re-locate itunes library from NTFS external hard drive to Time capsule

I have 90% of my itunes files on an external hard drive which I used as the location of my itunes library when I was using a pc.
    I now use a macbook 80GB.
I cannot use my external hard drive with my macbook as it's filing system is NTFS, and so incompatible with macs.
I wish to transfer all my music from the external hard drive to my Time Capsule, and use the TC as my new external hard drive and the location of my itunes library, ( as well as using the TC as my main back up location with Time Machine.)
    Firstly....the very basics.....
How do I use TC as a external hard drive generally?
To be the location of my large folders, files ( and itunes collection)that take too much space on my macbook.
    Next....
Am I right in thinking that I need to do the following...
Get Airtport utility on my pc, connect to TC and transfer from external HD to TC.
I would greatly appreciate all help and suggestions, as I am unsure as to all of these tasks.
    Many Many Thanks
    Hoo

You could plug the WD drive straight into the TC but it will be much faster to do it with the WD drive plugged into the computer.. and just mount the TC hard disk in Finder.
To move itunes library you must follow the Apple instructions.. http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1449
You may need to reconnect itunes to the library before you try to move it.. !!

  • How do I Play videos from external hard drive on Apple TV2?  Can I just move the iTunes Library to the External Hard Drive?

I have several HD videos stored on an external hard drive and would like to bring them into iTunes and play them via iTunes on my Apple TV2, but I am not sure how to go about it.  I don't want to store the movies on my iMac hard drive because it would eat up to much space...so do I just move the iTunes Library to the external hard drive?  And, if so...will the Apple TV2 find the iTunes Library on the external hard drive?  Thanks for any help anyone can suggest.

iTunes content on an external drive isn't a problem.
The simplest method is to just move your library to an external drive.
If you wanted to keep just movies on an external drive, that's a little more difficult. You'd need to put the movies where you want them to reside on the external drive and add drag and drop them onto iTunes while holding down the option key. Obviously any movies already in iTunes would need moving from their current location and removing from iTunes first.

  • How do I move iTunes library to an external hard drive to use less space?

How do I move iTunes library to an external hard drive to use less space?

Our iTunes guru Terence Devlin advises the following:
    1. Quit iTunes
    2. Drag the iTunes folder from your internal hd - located in ~/Music folder - to your external hd. DO NOT delete the original one from your internal hd... yet!
    3. When the transfer is complete, press and hold the Option(alt) key and fire up iTunes.
    4. A "Choose iTunes Library" window will come up. Click on the "Choose Library" button.
    5. Navigate to where the iTunes folder is located in the external hd.
    6. Within the iTunes folder, select the iTunes Library file and click Choose...
That's it. iTunes will now display all your playlists, songs, movies, podcasts etc. At this point, should you wish, you can delete the iTunes folder from the internal hd to free up space.

  • How do I move my iTunes library from my external hard drive back to my computer?

Just wondering how do I move my entire iTunes library from my external hard drive back to my computer? It was moved to an external hard drive a few years ago, and now I'm wondering how to move it back to my iMac to increase performance.
Where does it belong in the computer?
    Any suggestions?

The library itself is the /Home/Music/iTunes/ folder in its entirety. Did you also change where preference files were stored? Normally, they would be in the /Home/Library/Preferences/ folder.

    Thanks!

I called Apple Support and they walked me through it. They told me to basically copy and paste my music to the external hard drive. (I think.) Or maybe it was they had me transfer a folder to the EHD. I don't exactally remember it was a few years back. But I tried to plug in the EHD before starting and...nothing. Still says same thing, "locate file."
