ITunes locks my iMac every so often?

Every so often, but pretty regularly, iTunes seems to cause my mouse or iMac to lock up?
It's been doint this ever since I migrated my old iMac computer files to my ne iMac.
Any ideas?

Welcome to the Apple Community.
You can only restore them from a backup. This has occurred because you are sharing an iCloud account. Ideally you should each have your own iCloud account, that way you can each manage your own mail, contacts, calendars, documents etc and avoid unintentional deletions and unwanted editing. If there is information you wish to share between you, this can be done with a secondary account.
Having separate iCloud accounts, doesn't mean you have to have separate iTunes accounts, so whilst you keep your personal data separate, you can continue to share music, apps, books, TV shows, movies etc.

  • ITunes locking up iMac

So, I've been fighting with my iMac for about a month now. Issue is that iTunes and/or the Finder locks up. Applications that I already have open seem to continue to function but if I leave my iMac on and come back to it, iTunes either won't open (icon just bounces in the Dock and it never opens) or it is unresponsive and I have to force quit it. At this point I also cannot restart or shutdown my mac, when I choose either option from the Apple menu, the Dock hides and my desktop clears as the os is preparing the mac for the shutdown/restart but then it hangs with the spinning pinwheel and I have no choice but to do a hard boot with the power button.
I do use EyeTV to watch/record TV on my mac. I do export some recording into iTunes - I rarely get even 1 show to export successfully before iTunes is hung and I have to do a hard reboot and try again.
I have not installed any new software recently. Steps I have taken to try to fix the issue (not in any particular order):
    1) Unplugged power cord to reset SMC
    2) Reset NVRAM/PRAM
    3) Repaired Permissions using Disk Utility
    4) Verified with Disk Utility both the internal MacHD and external 2TB hard drive  (USB 2.0/3.0) - both check out as OK.
    4) Zero-formatted MacHD, reinstalled snow leopard (retail), downloaded 10.6.8 combo update, installed that, rebooted, repaired permissions, rebooted. Re-installed applications (including iTunes) (did NOT restore them or any Library files from backups).
    5) I've also tried "removing" iTunes and reinstalling (but I'm not sure how successful I was at finding and removing all iTunes components).
I just don't understand what could be causing this "hanging" behavior with iTunes. The mac and other applications seem to run fine until iTunes hangs. Then I have to do the hard boot with power button.

iTunes 10.6.1 (downloaded and installed directly from Apple.com
(iTunes library is on the external hard drive (2TB Seagate Go Flex) as the iTunes Media folder is too big to be on the MacHD)

I'm having a very similar problem, which started relatively recently (within the last several weeks).  When I start iTunes, the whole system and any running applications slow to a crawl.  Although not locked up altogether, the system takes 30 seconds to a couple of minutes to respond to any mouse click or key stroke, and any display updates are stalled until the very short open window for other processes opens up (briefly!) again.  With patience, I can switch the input focus to iTunes and Cmd-Q to close it, after which everything returns to normal.
    Mac OS 10.7.4
    iTunes 10.6.3 (25)
iTunes is unusable, as is the rest of the system while iTunes is running.

  • Time Machine & iTunes Lock Up iMac

I use Time Machine on my iMac (running OS X 10.5.7) and backup files to a 1 TB Time Capsule wirelessly. During hourly backups my system will lock up or "freeze" forcing me to turn off the iMac and turn it back on. This happens almost daily and has been going on for quite some time now. It seems like iTunes could have something to do with this. When the system locks up iTunes is playing music and is always the first program to stop responding. From there, any other open application stops responding until the entire system locks. Is there a known conflict between Time Machine and iTunes? Any ideas?
    Thanks - Jay

There have been reports of issues between Time Machine and iPhoto 8.0, but not iTunes that I am aware of. Try this.
    Reboot, the Mac.
Once you are logged back in initiate a backup without any other applications active. Does is complete successfully?
Now, launch only one of the applications you normally have open when the "freeze" occurs and initiate a backup. Does is complete successfully?
Do this with each app leaving iTunes for last.
When you launch iTunes don't play any music yet, just initiate a backup. Does is complete successfully?
Now play some music and initiate a backup. Does is complete successfully?
Also, are you playing the music only on the Mac, or are you streaming it to another device on your network?
By process of elimination you may be able to narrow down the conflict. Cheers!

  • ITunes locks up every time I load my library

I just spent the last couple days creating my iTunes library to include only the music I want from my hard drive. I also spent a lot of time changing genres, artist names, etc, so I don't have a huge list of artists on my iPod. I was just about finished when I added another music folder and iTunes locked up. Now every time I open iTunes it instantly locks up. If I remove my library and start over it work fine. I tried importing my library (after moving it to the desktop) and iTunes locks up again.
Is that it for my library and so many hours of work? Is the iTunes database that fragile or is there any way to recover it? I am not used to working with apple software and hence have never lost this many hours of work before. I'm hoping there is something I can do. Is there another program I can use to open the library file with besides iTunes to figure out what's wrong with it? The apple support says to just start adding the files back one at a time, but that is the same thing as starting all over. And even if I did that, what's to say it wouldn't just happen again part way through?
If anyone has any ideas I would very much appreciate it, I'm very frustrated right now.

I suspect that one folder had a bad file that itunes couldn't deal with.
Do you remember which one it was? You could create a new blank library and try adding just that folder and see if it locks up again, then you'd know to look at those files and see if they play in another player or something.
This kind of thing is difficult to help with over the internet.

    Hello oldsurfer250,
After reviewing your post, I have located an article that can help in this situation. It contains a number of troubleshooting steps and helpful advice concerning iTunes for Windows issues:

  • I have noticed my iMac's screen flashes every so often.  Any ideas?, I have noticed my iMac's screen flashes every so often.  Any ideas?

My iMac seems to be running just fine, but every so often my screen flashes.  I have not noted any regular intervals for when it happens nor have I tied it to an particular activity I am doing at the time.  Anyone else notice this happening?

Contact Apple Service, iMac Service or Apple's Express Lane. Do note that if you have AppleCare's protection plan and you're within 50 miles (80 KM) of an Apple repair station, you're eligible for onsite repair since yours is a desktop machine.

My iTunes on my iMac won't allow me to log on, but my iPad and iPhone both work fine... has anyone had this problem? I've reset my password, and it still doesn't work...

Sometimes the settings can get corrupted when you install an update. Check the outgoing mail server setting. Make sure that your username and password are in there.
Settings>Mail, Contacts, Calendars>Your email account>Account>Outgoing mail server - tap the server name next to SMTP and check in the primary server and make sure your username and password are entered and correct - even if it says that the password is optional.

  • Streaming video to ATV2 locks up iMac

I'm streaming video from my iTunes library to an AppleTV 2 over wifi. The iTunes library lives on a 27" i7 iMac w/ 8GB of RAM running OSX 10.6.8. All of the videos are .m4v files that have been run through Handbrake and transcoded to the "AppleTV 2" profile. I'm running the newest version of iTunes on the iMac (10.4). The AppleTV is also running the latest software version (4.3). The iMac is plugged into my DLink 802.11n router; the AppleTV pulls a DHCP address from the same router and both devices are on the same class C subnet.
After streaming for some period of time (sometimes 20 minutes, sometimes 2 hours) the video playback stops and I get dumped to the main Apple TV menu with the message "Connect your computer to the network". I walk into the computer room and the iMac has completely locked up; mouse won't move, keyboard input doesn't do anything, clock in the menubar freezes, etc. I have to hold the power button down until the iMac turns off, then reboot it. I've filed a crash report every time after rebooting but the problem persists.
It doesn't seem to matter if I'm running any CPU or memory intensive stuff on the iMac; I've had it lock up when it was sitting idle and iTunes was the only thing running. It also doesn't seem to be a problem with the AppleTV; I can stream Netflix for hours on end without problems.
Anyone seen this problem, know of a fix, or have any suggestions?

thank you, i was guessing its not possible but i saw someone here saying that his videos working even better from his iphone to atv then his imac to atv....just wanted to see im not crazy.
if i may ask u another thing, in order to see a video from my mac does it have to be .mov format (quick time player)? and if so- i need to convert all files to this .mov kind? how do u do it?

  • IPod times out / iTunes Locks Up / Synch not working

Hey everyone... I am having a terrible time here.... For Christmas I bought a new iMac Core Duo and an 80GB iPod. I transferred all my music from my old Mac, a G4 Cube, using the Migration Assistant when the new iMac booted up for the first time.
I am not able to get a successful sync from my iPod. Some of my symptoms include:
    (a) Plug In iPod, iTunes launches. Sync Begins. iTunes locks up at a particular song (i.e. Synching 138 of 13275). iPod still appears to be synching but nothing is happening.
    (b) Plug in iPod, iTunes launches. Sync Begins. iPod quits synching after a minute or so and returns to its main menu. iTunes still thinks it's synching but is locked at a particular song (i.e. Synching 38 of 13275)
In any case, iTunes hangs at some random song number, and all I can do is Force Quit, but iTunes never really quits... the little black triangle stays under the icon and I can't relaunch or Force Quit iTunes. More often than not the the Finder locks up as well. In any case, I can't even restart the Mac... I have to hold the power button until it forcefully shuts down.
I've done the "5 R's" several times, and I've also put the iPod in Disk Mode and reformatted it thinking something might be wrong with the file system but the symptons persist and I can't get a reliable sync.
I saw in some of these posts that a powered USB hub may solve the problem but that did not work either... same symptoms.
Having been a devout Mac evangelist for the last few years and a confirmed 'Switcher' since OS X came out I'm disappointed in this and hope a fix can be found soon. Any ideas from the collective?

  • How can I prevent the settings on iMessage from changing each time I sync the devices with iTunes on our iMac?

Each time I sync an apple device (iPad, iPad mini, iPhone) with iTunes on our iMac the settings on iMessage and phone settings change. We use the same Apple ID and have different e-mail addresses and phone numbers; however, each time a device is sync'd on iTunes on our iMac, the iMessage settings and phone settings are changed so that we all each get each other's text messages and phone calls. After the device is sync'd/charged, I have to go into each device (all of them somehow update when only one is sync'ing) and re-set the settings to what we want. How can I prevent settings from being changed each time?

Okay I've tried safe mode.  Let it run down to 98%, plugged it in, locked the screen, and waited.  A few minutes later, the screen came on showing the 100% icon at the top right, full battery icon just to the left of the time, 100% text to the left of that.
I'm not going to do a hard reset until I have confirmation that this is not normal behavior for the phone because that's going to take hours of my time and gigabytes of data transfer to get all of my media and apps back on the phone and configured.
After all my griping, I do have to give credit where it's due.  This phone is much more efficient than my Galaxy Nexus.  I left the S5 running in WiFi hotspot mode while on battery last night.  It still had over 50% left on the battery.  The Galaxy Nexus would be stone dead after about 4 hours.  I can live with that if I have to but I'd really rather be able to leave it on the charger at night.

  • How can I remotely control what iTunes song my iMac is playing to multiple AppleTV's?

So I own an iMac that has homesharing enabled.  I then tell the iMac to play to both of my AppleTV's by holding OPTION key down while clicking on Airplay, and checking off the devices that I want it to stream to filling my home with sound that is in sync in every room.  Works beautifully.  Only problem is that I can not then control the iMac remotely from let's say the bedroom to pick a new artist.  The ATV's become dumb clients simply playing what the iMac is pumping to them.  Is there a remote interface that allows me to control iTunes on the iMac to choose the sounds being broadcast to the other Apple devices?
NO.  VNC is a ghetto work around to accomplish this.  Yes, I could do that, but it is inefficient, and inelegant.  I am looking for a remote control app with the  functionality that allows me to connect to and see the device that I want to control, and then by choosing my iMac, see all artists/albums/songs, play them and let the iMac pump the tunes to the devices that I told iTunes to Airplay to.
Ideally, the AppleTV's should know that they are acting as clients to the iMac serving centrally, but when I pick up an AppleTV remote, it overrides the stream from the iMac, and then the ATV begins streaming independently from the other.  I KNOW there is a solution to this...
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks!
    Adam

ok...  solved it.  By using the Apple Remote app, you can tell the app to control your iMac (I did not know that) and that solved the issue.  Now the iMac plays the song I want to all of the devices that I told the iMac to play to.  Perfect.

  • IPod classic does not show up in iTunes or on imac desktop

I have a 80gb Classic Ipod. 2 days ago it stopped showing up in iTues or on my desktop when I connected it to the mac. The only place the iPod shows is under Disk Utility.
I have used different ports and usb cables.
Help... I can't get my lovely new tunes on my iPod ....
p.s. I have an iPhone 4 and it connects and syncs with no problem.

Hi. When I connect my ipod to any microsoft device, sometimes my ipod doesnt connect. I cant charge it, or restore it as it behaves like a useless piece of plastic.. I get a yellow bubble 'Device not recognized or has malfunctioned'
This problem is bizarre! I cannot find anyone who actually has a solution for this problem! Apples standard answer is for me to reinstall my drivers or update itunes or windows. Done it. No solution yet.
My ipod works fine.... sometimes. Its a completely unpredictable problem. Ive googled this problem and so many ipod classic owners have asked.. solutions ive tried: the 5r's, updating drivers, It managed to connect once, but now it wont. My ipod normally works fine on my PC, XBOX, laptop and Mac.. but sometimes, unpredictably, it wont be recognized by anything apart from the mac. For a month it would not connect at all and I took it in to an Apple store where they told me it works fine. Its not my PC.. its up to date, and theres no reason why it doesnt work on my XBOX because some times it does.. last night it did, today its broken again, I suspect tomorrow it may work. This is SO frustrating!!
I have alot of experience in PC's and normally I can solve a problem by process of elimination, updating and reinstalling, but in this case.. everything seems fine. My only idea is that maybe its my Sync cable?? Which also makes no sense because it generally connects fine on the mac - and, why would a sync cable be unpredictable.. surely it either works or it doesnt. HELP PLEASE!!
    Nick.

  • My new iPad not recognised as a device in iTunes on my IMac - I have the latest version of iTunes, have tried logging off and on but still  no device listed. Can anyone advise how to resolve this?

I am trying to sync my new iPad with iTunes on my iMac but when I attach the iPad to the computer via USB it still doesn;t show up as a device in iTunes. What am I doing wrong? I have checked all the tech specs and all seem ok. I bought the iPad in the U.S. - would this make a difference?

What you provided is not everything mentioned.
Your Mac is running 10.5.8 or later and iTunes 10?
You are connecting the iPad direct to a USB port on your Mac and you have tried every port?
You have reinstalled the Apple Mobile Device Service?
If your Mac is running Snow Leopard - 10.6, have you checked this link?

If you have multiple drives on the same IDE or SCSI bus, these drives may interfere with each other.
Some computers need an update to the ATA or IDE bus driver, or Intel chipset. If iTunes has problems recognizing CDs or hanging or crashing while importing or burning CDs, check the support site for the manufacturer of your computer or motherboard.
