ITunes locks up my Start Menu

Has anyone ever run into this? I have iTunes on three machines - my home PC, my work PC, and a laptop. I use an external hard drive to hold my library and all audio files so I can listen to whatever I want any time. The last week or so, on my work PC only (the other two do not do this), when I click the iTunes icon on my Start menu, it freezes the menu in place on my screen for about a minute. Eventually the menu disappears and iTunes starts.
I don't know what this is about or why it just started. When I check task manager my CPU usage is fairly high (50% or more) but not enough that I'd expect problems. And also, nothing is frozen except the Start menu and my taskbar - I can switch to other applications easily, which you would not expect if it was a CPU or memory problem. However, even when I switch the Start menu appears in front of them, which is very annoying.
For what it's worth, I am on iTunes 7.7.1.11. I have kept this version on all three machines because I got tired of upgrading them all every time a minor update came out. I've had no issues with this version on the whole until now, and I continue not having issues on my laptop or home PC.

Did your work's IT dept change something on your PC?
A lot of places map the user document folders out to network drives, and that could certainly slow things down for iTunes while it makes the connections.

  • [Suggestion/Issue] GPO "Start Menu Layout" / PS Export-StartLayout Issue

To start off with, I have already submitted this to Windows via the Windows Feedback option provided in the client version of Tech Preview.  I have decided to post this on here anyways as this might yield a suggested fix from someone else in the Microsoft
Community.  I also was unsure if this was a Windows 10 Tech Preview issue (Export-StartLayout is done on the client), or a Server Tech Preview issue as I'm using GPO's.
When using Export-StartLayout after adding "Network and Sharing Center" and "Devices and Printers" to the start menu, it exports these two tiles with different AppID #'s depending on which user account I'm exporting from.  As a result
of this, when using the GPO "Start Menu Layout", users do not get the two tiles in question setup, and also locks down the Start Menu so they can't add it.  The lockdown of the Start Menu is by design, however the loss of the tiles presents
    an issue.
It would be helpfull if they were assigned set AppID's so they can be easily mapped to the Start Menu via the GPO.

    Hi,
    >> I also was unsure if this was a Windows 10 Tech Preview issue (Export-StartLayout is done on the client), or a Server Tech Preview issue as I'm using GPO's.
Based on my test, this is not a Windows 10 Tech Preview issue. This situation also happens to Windows 8.1. At this moment, I have to admit that there is no solution known to me for this situation, and thanks for sending a feedback about this
    situation to Microsoft.

  • How do I get iTunes out of my startup menu?

Will sound strange, but I never use it. I have it just in case. If I don't want it in my startup menu period, do I have to uninstall it or is there another way. This is on a pc, not my mac. Will not use it on the mac either!
    Thanks everyone!

  • Group Policy question about setting Start menu items using devices and not users

I am using Windows Server 2003 and Windows Server 2008 R2 servers set up for use as Active Directory Servers.
What I am trying to do is lock down thin clients start menu options and I have been able to get this to work down to the user level.  However, what I want to do is have it locked down on the machine level.
We have multiple users that use both "Thin Clients" with Windows 7 Embedded and we also have them using other PC's with using the same log in.
So, for example when you create an OU for "Thin Clients", I want thin client devices in there and when people log in to these thin clients then the start menu will be locked down.  I want this to be user independent and thus I don't want Users
in the OU, but I want to lock down the start menu.
How can I do this with Group Policy Objects on a domain level?

    Hi,
you could achieve this using GPO loopback processing. It was designed for the purpose of applying settings from user GPO to a certain group of computers.

  • ITunes locking up as soon as it starts after updating it, please help.

My iTunes updated to the latest update last night. When it restarted, it immediatly comes up with the "Updating iTunes Library" window in front of iTunes and gets half way there and freezes. I cannot close it or do anything except close it out with Task Manager in Windows Vista. Then, iTunes, on it's own, keeps starting itself back up over and over and over with the same result. It loads as if I had clicked it to start and I have not, and before I can try to click anything, the "Updating iTunes Library" window comes up and it freezes again. I have to go into task manager and keep closing out iTunes as it keeps starting itself up over and over as if someone was clicking it and trying to start it, but if I leave it alone, it just sits there locked up and frozen. I have uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes and it does the exact same thing. Is anyone else having this issue or is there anyone that can help me?

I have almost the same issue:
After update of iTunes, starting up iTunes will result in a lockup with a window telling you it is updating the iTunes library.
Running Windows 7, 64 bit, US.
iTunes version 10.whatever (I wish I could tell, but it locks-up).

How do I correct this to download iTunes so it will run?

That one's consistent with disk/file damage. The first thing I'd try with that is running a disk check (chkdsk) over your C drive.
XP instructions in the following document: How to perform disk error checking in Windows XP
Vista instructions in the following document: Check your hard disk for errors
Windows 7 instructions in the following document: How to use CHKDSK (Check Disk)
Select both Automatically fix file system errors and Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors, or use chkdsk /r (depending on which way you decide to go about doing this). You'll almost certainly have to schedule the chkdsk to run on startup. The scan should take quite a while ... if it quits after a few minutes or seconds, something's interfering with the scan.
Does the chkdsk find/repair any damage? If so, can you get an install to go through properly afterwards?

  • ITunes 7 ...too good to be true... start menu folder problems

If any one out there like me and prefers to keep there start menu / programs organized then you might run into this ... itunes 7 automatically installs itunes into the directory directly under start menu/programs....and if i try to move the folder into a sub-folder such as start-menu/programs/media folders ... itunes will reinstall itself and make another new folder under start-menu/programs .... this is quite upsetting

    hahahaha!
It said my ipod update was complete. Then when I go to disconnect it, it says "itunes is updating the ipod. are you sure you want to disconnect it?"
    lol
it appears to be ruiening all the tracks on my ipod with its gapless playback.
looks like its time to uninstall iTunes 7, go back to the previous version, restor my ipod to factory settings and remove all the songs, then start over.

but cannot do this because I cannot access Mac App Store
If you can't access the App Store from the Apple menu, Dock, or Applications folder installing the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo will reinstall the App Store for you.
It's ok to do this even you are already running v10.6.8.

  • Can't Move or Remove iTunes 7 Start Menu Shortcuts

Once iTunes 7 is installed, it creates a set of program shortcuts in the "start menu > all programs" area. I often reogranize these shortcuts myself post-installation.
However, when I move or delete the iTunes 7 shortcuts from this area, the next time I start the iTunes program it runs the installation / configuration process again and restores all of the program shortcuts.
It does not care if I remove the desktop or quick launch shortcuts, but as soon as I change the start menu programs shortcuts it throws a fit and restores them.
Any fixes / explanations for this, or is it a legit bug?

This appears to be an intentional "feature" of iTunes 7.

  • ITunes re-installing Start Menu issue

I have iTunes 7 running on my PC. I start it from a quick launch icon, and the iTunes folder is in the start menu in a sub folder for organizational reasons. Every time I run iTunes it runs through an installer and re-adds a desktop icon, and an iTunes folder in the root of the Start Menu. I have been unable to stop this from occurring. Anyone know of a fix?
Imac and PC   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   PC Running XPSP2

I have a Mac and experience problems on it as well, though usually of a different nature from those on my Windows machine.
However, this issue IS an Apple issue. Of all the Windows programs I have used, only one other had this annoying problem of reinstalling and that was Norton Anti-Virus. I switched programs to another company to solve that problem.
Fortunately for me, there's a solution here as switching programs is not possible without losing access to my iPod.
Apple needs to fix this problem ASAP. If they expect me to buy one of the newer iPod models, something I was planning on until now, they need to think more of their users. My iPod is a few years old now and it's time to upgrade to video and photo, but if this is how Apple treats someone, I may be taking Microsoft up on their Zune player. (I wouldn't lose much as everything in my library is playable on Windows Media Player).
