ITunes locks up when I attach my 5G iPod. Help!

Recently I have had an issue that when I attach my 5G iPod to my PC iTunes, iTunes locks up. iTunes works fine by itself. My iPod seems to have no issues with the music that is already in it and it works fine by itself. When I attach the iPod, the PC knows a USB device has been attached as I show an additional drive added to my PC. The problem is that when I attach the iPod to the PC iTunes locks up. All I can do kill the application. When I do that the iPod remains as a USB drive on my PC.
I could be wrong about this, but I think this started when I went to iTunes 7.7.
Does anyone think this is an iPod issue rather than an iTunes issue?
Any suggestions?
Thanks...

I`ve had the same problem, you should leave it at first for some while. Most probably it`s checking the songs. I`ve had it locked for about 15 mins when doing a backup ( don`t know why, because i do this very often ) If it doesn`t snap out of it, you should put the iPod in disk mode, and restore it, this could ( not for sure ). If you think that the 7.7 upgrade did this to you, then just uninstall and reinstall the 7.6. You can take it from here: http://files3.download3000.com/download/f929e83a52d28f065f4a408beb691940/1/49662 /iTunesSetup.exe
Hope this helps, Darie

itunes locks  up when i plug my iphone in

This is SO freakin frustrating! Tired of iTunes locking up my ENTIRE Mac Mini when my phone is connected. I wish Apple would get it together and fix this. Otherwise I WILL move to Google Play. This is SO annoying!!!!

  • I have just updated to itunes 11 and when I plugged in my ipod classic it locked up. When I tried again it said my ipod was corrupt and advised I reset it. I reluctantly did this as I lost all my music and now itunes just locks up when I plug in my ipod.

Not if you first do a sync and have iTunes make a backup. However, if your only copy of the iTunes data is in the Touch, then you need to first copy the data to a new iTunes Library using third-party software such as Phone To Mac.

  • Computer/itunes locks up when ipod connected

Itunes locks up when I connect my ipod (20G).I hear the "ding, dong" when I connect it, but Itunes does not recognize that it is connected, it freezes and I have to reboot. It charges, and the "do not disconnect" sign is constantly running.I can not upload any new music I've purchased.I tried to restore, and now it is back to the factory setting with no music. My itunes works perfectly with my shuffle. My shuffle is listed under "devices", but not my ipod.
    Anyone with a solution?

I am having the exact same problem. Th eone difference is that on occasion, iTunes downloads my playlists yet not the associated songs in the playlist.

iTunes stops responding when I plug in my iPod.  I have updated iTunes to latest version, still crashes.  OS is Vista. How do I fix this?

    Hm... Strange.
    I had reset the iPhone.
I tried disabling the auto-launch of iPhoto, and...
...when I plugged iPhone in, it started to freeze iTunes, but after a minute or so, the iPhone started synching. I found this odd because I had disabled auto-sync (I press Sync in iTunes when I want to have it Sync).
Now, of course, I do want auto-launch of iPhoto back on, since I like it for when I attach my digital cameras. I hope that when I set it back, it won't re-introduce the problem.
The restart I did may have helped. I resist restarting because my wife's account is often open and she frequently leaves unsaved files up, so it is a pain to respectfully close out her work and then restart.

  • I had to reinstall itunes and now when I plug in my ipod itunes does not automatically come up so I can log in, how do I fix this?

I had to reinstall itunes and now when I plug in my ipod itunes does not automatically open to my library or where I can access the itunes store.  What do I do now?

Open iTunes and connect your iPod. Select your iPod in iTunes from the Source list. (I'm assuming this still works, although you didn't indicate if it did or didn't.) Make sure the box is checked to Open iTunes when this device is connected. You should be all set!

  • ITunes locks up when iPhone 3G attached, unlocks when not attached

Mine worked for half the afternoon, but now I get a sick sounding beep when I plug it into the USB port, and it locks up iTunes (windows Vista 32 ultimate). Tried different USB ports, shutting down the computer, resetting the iPhone, etc., but nothing works. It doesn't lock up the Mac, and the iPhone appears in iTunes, but iTunes is unresponsive. I downloaded and installed a few apps, and moved about 5 gigs of music videos onto it, and now iTunes locks up. I deleted the apps, but that did no good.

I did some additional research and even tried a hard reset and restore from prior to when I saw the issue.  That did not help.
I found one response to a similar situation that recommended clicking on phone's podcasts and waiting out the spinning beach ball.  I chose to do that late in the evening, so I clicked, and went to bed.  It was working and accessible in the morning.  So far, so good.

I have an 80GB classi.  it has worked fine until today.  Now when I connect my ipod to my WIn 7 computer iTunes locks up.  I can not get out of iTunes unless I reboot the computer as it will not even close when I try to end the process in task manager.  It works fine until I attache the ipod.

  • ITunes Locks up when Library moved to NAS

I recently bought a Synology DS1511+ NAS in part to store my growing iTunes library. So I followed Apple's directions for moving my iTunes Library; changed the default library location to a share on my nas, then consolidate the library to have iTunes copy everything to the new location, and finally moved the library database files. However, After I would get done watching a movie, which would play fine, iTunes would lock up consistently when I would try to click on another section like music, aps, and ect... When I moved my library back to local storage no lockups. Does anybody have any ideas? I know more and more people are using a NAS to storage their iTunes Librarys, so I thought this would be pretty simple. I'm running Windows 7 64 with a 1 GIGBIT network connection to my PC and NAS.

If it works fine when the library is local but locks up when the library is on the NAS, that would indcate either problems with the NAS or the network.

I've reset the firewall "outbound rules" as suggested in the help after the diagnostic test.  This only allows me to enter the store but upon initiating log out iTunes locks.  I've used the "netsh winsock reset" (as suggested here: https://discussions.apple.com/message/15905544#15905544) to no avail.
    Any ideas are appreciated.

Thanks for the response.  Following the instructions in that article produces the following information.  Very close to what is described in the article but the names differ (IPv6 vs. IP) and a total of eight rather than 10 values.  I can't see any LSP interfering with this . . .
I've updated my Norton AntiVirus without effect.  Interestingly the firewall "inbound rules" shows one for iTunes even when the connectivity test fails.  If I delete the existing and create a new rule it will work only until I try to log out the current user.  Then the party is over.
    Any other ideas?

  • ITunes Locking Up When Using External Hard Drive

Has anybody else had any trouble with ITunes locking up for about 30 seconds at a time. The music keeps playing but the cursor locks up and you can't click, use hot keys, etc. I'm using a 150GB external hard drive to store my music and while it's locked up the hard drive is crunching something, almost like ITunes is looking for something. All of my files are organized, no viruses or spy-ware that I can find. Doesn't happen with any other audio program, just ITunes. I've watched the CPU usage on Task Manager when it happens and the only thing that is running is ITunes. Please help!

I came across your post because, I have been having issues for a while with the same description, except that I am using separate partitions on my main drive.
What I noticed is that if I set my podcast downloads to go to my NTFS main partition, there is no lag... but the moment I set it to my FAT32 partition, the lag starts back up.
I believe that the issue is with the slooow write time to FAT32 in large drives. (And in my instance, the move command apple does to put the podcast, which writes to the FAT32 partition and removes the NTFS temp download) Do you see the same lag or alot shorter if the drive is formatted to NTFS?
I don't really have any space currently to format my partition to test the issue, but I the fact of the downloads speeding up when set to my NTFS main disk makes me think that this issue could be lessened by using FAT32.
a side note for me, I'm considering reformatting my drive to NTFS, after backing up due to the advancement of ntfs3g in linux, so this could solve my problem at least.

  • Itunes locks up when trying to import CD

My itunes software locks up when trying to import a CD. Specifically, it will import 1 full CD then lock up when trying to access the artwork. I went into "properties" and stopped the software from looking for artwork, rebooted the machine and was able to import 1 CD, then it would not recognize the next one. I tried 3 different CD's and none of them worked. I am running the most recent version of itunes. Any thoughts?

Help! I have the same problem! I am running Windows XP SP3 and Itunes 8.0.2.20. I imported about a dozen cd's and then the imports started locking up the whole system. I had to power the pc off to get things running again. I have two cd drives installed and both fail. I tried disconnecting the network cable, and it still locked up. Any ideas??

  • ITunes locks up when trying to set up new iPod Touch

I just got a new computer that is 64-bit and runs on Windows 7...I downloaded iTunes today and set up an account and transfered purchased songs from my old iPod to my new computer. I plugged in my new 32g iPod touch and I am wanting to not register it. When I get to the screen that lets me name my iPod and check prefrences on what to sync I hit done and iTunes locks up. I have to go to task manager to shut it down. PLEASE HELP!!! I have had this iPod touch for a week and was waiting on new computer...got new computer but cant get iPod to work!!!

Yes, worth a try. It's probably worth doing a complete uninstall of all related programs too, prior to reinstalling iTunes. for instructions on that, see:
[Removing and reinstalling iTunes, QuickTime, and other software components for Windows Vista or Windows 7|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1923]
Note ... at the time of me making this reply, the instructions in there aren't quite complete for 64-bit systems. After step 14 of *Verify iTunes and related components are completely uninstalled,* I'd also include the following two steps:
(14-1/3) Open the Common Files folder.
(14-2/3) Right-click the Apple folder (if it exists), choose Delete, and choose Yes when asked to confirm the deletion. Click Continue if Windows needs confirmation or permission to continue.
(There's a Common Files folder where Apple stuff is stashed in the program files folder as well as the Program files (x86) folder.)

  • ITunes locks up when I try to update or restore iPod from iTunes 7

I have tried several times to update my iPod to version 1.2 using the new iTunes 7 interface - the one click "easy" option. Everytime I do I get nowhere - iTunes 7 locks up and that's it. I thought I'd try to restore the iPod and start from there. Same thing happens, though; it locks up and I'm done. I get no error messages.
Based on many posts I've read, I'm not sure it's a good idea to even upgrade to version 1.2.
Anyone else having this issue? Any advice?
    Thanks!

I am posting a possible solution to all these problems I and so many of you have said you've experienced. I think I had two things working against me:
    1) I did not have a 2.0 USB port when trying to update my ipod to version 1.2. I think this effected the connection and iTunes ability to recognize my iPod.
Anyway, I put in a new USB 2.0 card in my computer, giving me new ports off the mother board, and my connection and update worked.
    2) I was not giving it enough time. After I installed the USB card and everything I tried to update my iPod a couple of times, but still had a long slow stall that I did not wait through. I kept at it though and a few days later I set it up to update and left to go out to dinner. Hours late I came back and found things different. I used windows to disconnect my iPod and then noticed a dark "working" bar on my iPod. It was finally updating the device. I waited a while unitl it was finished and then diconnected and ever since then I've got version 1.2 on the iPod and things are working better.
So, my advice: check your USB ports and then give it a few hours.
I really hope this works for you. I worked on this problem for two months and I'm so glad it finally came through. I wish Apple would post some more resolutions that are better than mine.
    Good luck,
    Galahad
