Itunes locks up when the ipod is connected

I have an 80gb classic, this weekend when i tried charging it, itunes said that the ipod was corrupt and needed to be restored. I followed all steps to do so, and ever since, whenever it is connected to the computer, it causes itunes to lock up. If itunes is not up, whatever program is up (ie for instance), locks up. I tried using the computer at work, same result. I tried using a different cord (mine is the original and has been through much abuse), same result. Any thought or ideas?

Looks like new firmware upgrade solved this issue.

  • Itunes locking up when the iPhone is connected to the computer

Has anyone found a "real" solution to the problem of iTunes locking up every time and iPhone is connected to the computer for syncing? I'm getting sick and tired of having to reboot my computer 6-7 times before I can get a clean connection so the two will sync. I would have thought Apple would have gotten off their collective A* by now and fixed an obviously serious software issue. Or are they going the way of Windows and just crank out crap just so they can say they have the coolest gadget?
Here's what I did today and still can't get iTunes to sync with my iPhone:
    1. Completely un-installed "ALL" Apple products.
    2. Cleaned the registry of "ALL" Apple products.
    3. Reset the iPhone back to factory settings.
    4. Shut down and restarted both.
    5. Reloaded all new Apple software.
    6. Started iTunes and as soon as I connect the iPhone, iTunes locks up.
    7. I have restarted my computer 6 times and still can't get iTunes to run without lockup.

  • I have synced my new ipod but no music is stored on ipod but is when the ipod is connected to itunes

    Hi
I have transferred cds to itunes and followed instructions to sync ipod. It went through a long process syncing music to devise then said it was completed however no music is on the ipod even though when the ipod is connected to itunes when you open up the ipod from the menu options on itunes and click on music all of the music is there. When connected it also says used and free space and the used space correlates to the music downloaded.
If you try to re-sync is tries to synch, disconnects and then an error message appears the ipod "Emma's iPod" cannot be synced. The required disc cannot be found.
I have tried re-starting it and restoring. I'm now ready to throw the thing out of the window - can anyone help so that I don't waste £200!! I wonder if it is faulty?
Thanks to anyone who is able to reply
    Emma

  • Fix for "Unknown Device" when the iPod is connected

After a few long nights, a few headaches, hours and hours of reading, thinking and many toasted sandwiches, I finally found the problem to my iPod not loading. Putting together information I had read here and at many other sites I had a brainwave... and sure enough it worked. I figure this may be helpful to many other iPod users, so... here I am posting my solution. Note though, this wont help all users, but I know I wasn’t alone with this issue, and this just might help someone.
I’ll list the issue I was having (this may help other people identify their issue to mine) was that the iPod failed to work on windows, and threw a fit when plugged in. Windows did too, iTunes would lock up and the iPod software failed to recognise that an iPod was connected. The iPod had worked on an older PCs before, but it failed to work on my new homebuilt PC. When I first connected the iPod it began to work, transferring and updating.. but then it unexpectedly disconnected the iPod.. and mentioned something to do with an I/O error, the iPod had to be disconnected and it also mentioned something to do with a timeout error and dataloss (or as it put it “Data has been destroyed”. That’s always a pleasant message to read). Suddenly, half the music on my iPod wouldn't play, it skipped songs until it found a song it would play... really annoying. I tried to format the iPod using the iPod software... buuut it told me that it wasn’t an iPod that was connected (Funny that... lol). After the first iPod crash, it would react differently when connected. It would once again pop up with the “Found new hardware” bubble, “Apple iPod...”, “Disk Drive...” ... then iTunes loads... then iTunes freezes... then the iPod disconnects 2 mins later, then iTunes unfreezes. THEN the next time the iPod is connected, it would say it was an “Unknown device”, and that it has “Malfunctioned”.
It seems that, oddly enough, my iPod (I own the 30gig iPod Photo) does not like USB 2.0... I’m thinking that it must not support some of the device commands the PC is sending to it... Weird though, because on other USB 2.0 PCs it worked fine. (I got the best results out of Dell PCs...). IF USB 2.0 is disabled and slows to USB 1.1 the iPod works a charm... jumped up without an issue in the world. To disable USB 2.0, jump into BIOS as your pc is in its POST stages... this being, when the PC is first turned on and presents a message such as “Press DEL to enter setup” (or something similar), do so. Then refer to your manual on how to disable USB 2.0, if possible. Apply the changes and reboot. Be sure not to mess around with other settings, it is very easy to mess up your computer if you change settings you are not familiar with.
Other solutions would be to run the iPod via Firewire... if you can get a cable. Run along to your local mac store and see if they have one in stock. I’ll get back on here to post if using Firewire solved the issue later.
Perhaps a motherboard BIOS upgrade, or newer drivers could resolve the issue. This may explain to some people why their iPod stopped working overnight after working fine for so long, maybe an update of the sort was installed. Apparently my motherboard already has an update, so I’ll test that sometime and post my results as I investigate further, but as for now I’m just happy my iPod is working, even if it is taking ages to transfer (25 gigs of music takes awhile over USB 1.1 lol...).
Also, I might add that my motherboard is an ASUS P5P800 with the Intel 865PE chipset. It could be an interesting pattern seeing which motherboards do not seem to be compatible with the iPod at USB 2.0 speeds.
As long as this post was I hope that someone gets some use out of it. I’ll post further findings as I investigate this matter further.
    Happy iPodding!

    hi Jazza!
the best explanation for this that i've seen is that there can be power drain problems in USB 2.0. drop below 500 mA running through the port and everything goes to pot. this may well explain why switching back to USB 1.1 sometimes works like a charm, and also explains why it's important to have the ipod plugged into a high powered USB port rather than a low power port.
i've seen a confirmed case of a USB connection going west after a scanner got plugged into the beast in question ... periodically i see other reports along these lines, too.

  • If you buy an iPod shuffle can you put iTunes videos on it, and then when the iPod is connected to a player with a screen the video will play?

does anyone know an asnwer to this question?

I suppose if you enabled disk use, stored it on in the iPod, then copied the file to the computer you're wanting to play it on. If you mean directly from the iPod to a TV... no.

  • 3G iPod nano with scroll wheel when the iPod is connected

The scroll wheel of my brand new 3G iPod doesn't respond when I plug it in a dock cable (the dock connector of the USB cable and the dock connector of the FM tuner). The iPod is recognized by the computer and can be synchronized. The FM tuner is working except that I can't use the scroll wheel.
It seems to be an hardware problem. I try to reset it several times without success.
    Thanks in advance

No it is every time I just plug the iPod through the dock even the FM tuner.
Any connection of the dock connector deactivate the scroll wheel.

  • How can I turn off sleep when an iPod is connected?

Is there a way to make a PowerMac running MacOS X 10.4.2 NOT go to sleep when an iPod is connected? I can only charge my iPod by connecting it to the USB bus of the computer. The first time I was charging it, my Mac put the display to sleep and I couldn't get it to wake up. I eventually had to shut down my Mac and then reboot it.
I'd like to be able to set my Mac to sleep normally when nothing is connected but to stay awake with the iPod connected. Is this possible?

I don't know about sleeping specifically when the iPod is connected, but I do know that you can set the sleep timing to never in Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Energy Saver. Manually setting up sleep can be done via the Apple menu. There may be a way to check with the terminal if the iPod is a mounted volume, though that would be a Unix command that I'm not familiar with. You may be able to find it via the man pages here:

I recently bought an Ipod touch 2nd gen, (Ebay). It's in great shape and seemed to be wiped clean.
When I connect (via windows computer) to Itunes with usb cord the Ipod icon shows, but the only function you can do is eject. When its in the upper right hand corner and you click on it all you get is a done button, when it's in the side bar right click and your only option is eject, left click has no effect. If I go to "file">devices it's as if there are no devices connected.
I purchased a song with Itunes on the Ipod itself, and it transferred to my library on the computer automatically .
I have an Iphone 5 and a nano that are still functioning with Itunes thru computer so I'm thinking the issue is with the Ipod touch. I've reset it several times, rebooted it, with no change.
nothing on the internet has helped, I called tech support and got disconnected. Should I take it to a retail store? I just don't know where to go next, I'm of course willing to pay for tech or repair. looking for suggestions.

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.
