ITunes loses files (Exclamation point) even though files are still there

A large number of my songs appear with an exclamation point next to their name, indicating that iTunes can't find the actual song files. When I try to access them (get info or play) I get the option to find them with explorer. When I look in the folder they SHOULD be(i.e. artist, album), they still are there! iTunes should have been able to find them itself. I can "re-connect" them by selecting the file(s one by one), but this is very time consuming for a large library, and it keeps happening - making it a never ending process. Those exclamation points HAVE to be cleared up, or those songs won't sync with the iPod.
1) Why does iTunes keep losing files that are still present in the correct folders ("iTunes organizes" is checked)?
2) Since the files ARE still located in the proper folders, is there a way to get iTunes to reconnect them automatically?

Okay, guys. I think I have a solution. It's working now anyway.
There is a response to a post on a similar topic that I found helpful with this issue.
Go to a post titled: "Loss of iTunes library, with entire library still on iPod". As of this moment it is on page 11 of the posts.
In it is a write up with links about programs that transfer the music and playlists on your iPod back to iTunes. You can try the demo versions. There is also a link to reviews of some of the programs.
I tried most demos that worked with Windows and found that the one that seemed best for me is called iPodCopy. I tried doing what I'm going to tell you about using the demo version but found that it doesn't allow enough transfers to do my whole iPod so I had to purchase it for $20. I didn't want to spend the money, but decided my time is worth more.
So, here's what I did.
Download and purchase the software.
Make sure that iTunes is closed and your iPod is NOT connected.
Open iPodCopy and go to "help" for the very simple directions of "how to".
Follow the instruction carefully so you don't overwrite your iPod accidentally. Check out the instructions/FAQ's about not accidentally syncing your iPod while connecting.
NOTE: If you have windows, press Ctrl & Shift and CONTINUE TO HOLD while and after you connect your iPod. This will ensure your iPod does not begin to sync.
Once you get into iTunes, click on your iPod and check off the manual sync and enable disk.
Next, I chose to create a new iTunes Music folder and directed iTunes to that folder. That way I knew it would be the restore from my iPod and not mess up my existing iTunes folder in case something didn't work right.
Then go back to iPodCopy and follow the instruction.
I have been able to recreate my iTunes now using my iPod and so far there are no exclamation points, all the songs and playlists are back, I'm playing music, and my iPod has been updated using the recreated iTunes. All seems well so far.
Hope this works for you!! If you have any questions about this I'll try to check back later and answer.

In the Event mode use the View ➙ Sort ➙ By Date ➙ Decending menu option.  Then the latest imports will be near the top of the Event window (depending on when the photos were taken of course).
Or Control-Click on one of the thumbnails in the Last Import album and select Show Event from the contextual menu:

  • Itunes 6.0.4 can't find 80% of my songs even though they're still there

i'm having the following problem, since upgrading to 6.0.4 on my Windows XP machine:
net: ~20% of my song files will play as normal, ~80% of the songs in itunes say they can't find original file and i have to manually locate to find, they're all still there in their original location
did some troubleshooting and manual analysis of the itunes library .xml file and discovered that the difference is that some of my songs were ripped "with track number prefix" and some without. this appears to be the discrepancy
e.g. the itunes music library .xml file is pointing to:
    C:\...\itunes\itunes music\...\03 Songname.mp4
when the actual file is at
    C:\...\itunes\itunes music\...\Songname.mp4
    or vice versa.
Does anyone have suggestions on how to correct? i'm open to all suggestions including e.g. suggestions for how to either update the .xml file or rename the affected files?
note: re-adding folder to library is not a valid solution for me as it would require deleting the "missing" songs as duplicates and net will delete all my ratings, genre, etc. for the "missing" songs.
thanks for any suggestions, much appreciated.

Are these "thousands of files" in an iTunes library that simply cannot be found?
If so, assuming you know exactly where they are, hold the "Option" key while opening iTunes from your dock.  You will then be given a "Choose Library" option.  Choose it and point to your library.

  • Why did my playlists dissapear from my iPhone, even though they are still on my iTunes?

I went into my iPhone music app today (on my 4s), and I noticed all my playlists were gone.  All my music could still be found under Songs/Artists, just my playlists were missing.  I went home and noticed they were all on my iTunes still though.
I use iTunes match, so I turned it off on both iTunes and iPhone, then turned back on, but still playlists were gone.  I haven't done anything with iTunes or my phone recently, so I am not sure what has happened.  The only thing I have done was hook up an apple TV the other day...is that what did it?
Anyways, I plugged my phone in, turned off Match, and synced.  Playlists are there now.  Turn on iTunes Match, and they dissapear again.
What's going on? All the songs in my playlists are uploaded or matched in the could.
    Thanks,
    Andrew

  • My iPad isn't appearing in iTunes on my MacBook air even though both are brand new. The iPad is appearing as a device in photos. Has anyone else had this problem?

Anyone know the answer to this question

I suspect what you are trying to say is that your iPad is showing up as a photo device in the same way as any other external device would, eg., USB key etc. I am not familiar with the MacBook but here is the possible remedy for Windows operating systems and I am sure you will be able to interpret it accordingly -
Connect your iPad to your computer
    Open My computer / Computer
Locate the IPad / 'photo' icon
Right click on it and go to Properties
There should be a place to set what will happen each time the device is connected, set it to do nothing, unplugg the iPad, reconnect it and now try again.

Hold down Home and sleep buttons until Apple logo appears and your phone restarts.   You won't lose any data.

  • HT3702 Why can't I download my already purchased music and other files from iCloud, even though I owe money to iTunes for my most recent purchases.  Doesn't seem right that they keep me from accessing those files which I've already paid for!

    - Are you saying that they are not listed in your Purchased section?
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
    - Are they listed in your Puchases history when you log into your account on your computer?
    - Are they still available now for purchase? If not then you are out of luck
If they are still available and listed in your Puchase History then contact iTunes

  • Not all my songs are showing in itunes even though they are in the Itunes Media file directory

Not all my songs are showing in itunes even though they are in the itunes Media Dir.  I have spent hours trying to find out why so I moved the songs out of the Music/itunes/itunes media and uninstalled itunes.  I then restarted my pc and re-installed itunes.  When I opened itunes the same songs are still there (but cannot be played as cannot find location) even though I have not put anything back in the itunes media dir.  To me there seems to be a refreshing problem as itunes is not looking at the directory even through the advanced preferences area is mapped to the correct area.
    Help please.
    Thanks

Apple's official advice on duplicates is here: Find and remove duplicate items in your iTunes library. It is a manual process and the article fails to explain some of the potential pitfalls such as lost ratings and playlist membership, or that sometimes the same file can be represented by multiple entries in the library and that deleting one and recycling the file will break the other.
Use Shift > View > Show Exact Duplicate Items to display duplicates as this is normally a more useful selection. You need to manually select all but one of each group to remove. Sorting the list by Date Added may make it easier to select the appropriate tracks, however this works best when performed immediately after the dupes have been created.  If you have multiple entries in iTunes connected to the same file on the hard drive then don't send to the recycle bin.
Use my DeDuper script if you're not sure, don't want to do it by hand, or want to preserve ratings, play counts and playlist membership. See this thread for background, this post for detailed instructions, and please take note of the warning to backup your library before deduping.
(If you don't see the menu bar press ALT to show it temporarily or CTRL+B to keep it displayed.)
The most recent version of the script can tidy dead links as long as there is at least one live duplicate to merge stats and playlist membership to and should cope sensibly when the same file has been added via multiple paths.

i-tunes could not be used because the original file could not be found.could not locate.this error occurs on most of my songs in my library and will not play even though they are in my i-pod and play with no trouble.can  anyone please help?

    I was not complete clear.
Since you never changed the settings in the advanced section of iTunes preferecnes, you have to chech that your music is really in the location setted in the folders reported in the advanced section.  If not you have 2 ways: reset the position of this folders or in the actual disk organisation or in the pointing on the preferences.
If you press the reset button you just give to itunes its default setting as for the position of the music files: probably this will be a good choice if you have never changed any default preference.
But before I would check the folders and see if the songs are really there
In my iTune I have this, and I believe it is the default.

  • Cannot find file/exclamation point!!!

Some of my music in itunes will not play, it seems completely random which ones play and which ones decide not to. One day the song may play and the next day the exclamation point will appear beside the song when I try to play it. Please help, this is driving me crazy...i have an updated version of itunes, however this is not a new problem..just one i have been avoiding until i find the answer. Please help!

Make sure your files are all in the same place and updated.
The problems come when you start moving files and cleaning it up manually. I would erase all your albums in your library, and then re-add the folders to your library.
I think the problem is you are someone else is moving around your files manually. The exclamation point means the file wasn't in the palce it was the last time it played.
This happens to me when I use my itunes over a shared network. If the files are on another machine, and that machine is unavailable, the files show up as exclamation points.

  • I just used stellar phoenix mac data recovery and it seemed to work but now my files won't open.  Even though they are "jpeg, mov" files the error message is  could not be opened. The movie's file format isn't recognized. "  Any help or are they corrupted

I just used stellar phoenix mac data recovery and it seemed to work but now my files won't open.  Even though they are "jpeg, mov" files, the error message is  "could not be opened". The movie's file format isn't recognized. "  Any help or are they corrupted?

Sounds to me like the file is probably corrupt. If you had hard drive corruption or damage, that could easily result in recovered files not being fully intact. If you were trying to recover accidentally deleted files, it's possible they might have been partially overwritten before recovering. There are never any guarantees with file recovery.
Without more information on the circumstances that led you to try recovery, it's hard to give advice on what to try from here. You could always try another file recovery tool, like Data Rescue 3. Just be sure you're taking appropriate precautions when doing recovery. See Recovering deleted files.

Unfortunately no, It says "Adobe not responding" as well when I try to open a pdf. It has done this a few times where I had to uninstall and reinstall. Also, Illustrator tells me to uninstall/reinstall as well.
