ITunes loses track of songs?

When I turned on my iTunes today, and tried to double click the song, it gave me the error: The song "____" could not be used because the original file could not be found. Would you like to locate it? Yes/No". So I go through a bunch of my files and find the same song but I was surprised to find that EVERY file was like this..so I spent about an hour restoring all my songs and then, out of nowhere, I didn't even close my iTunes program or change it somehow, all my files can't be located again? What's happening!!?

I'm having the same problem. Hopefully somebody has the answer.

  • ITunes lose track of music files

Every couple of days iTunes loses track of all the songs stored on my PC. As soon as you open iTunes for any user. all songs you attempt to access cannot be found and the exclamation point appears beside all songs listed in the library.
I have centralized all my song files – about 9400 files - on an internal secondary drive “e:\music\iTunes\iTunes music”. This is set as the default folder for all iTunes users.
I have iTunes v.6.0.4.2 installed for three separate user IDs on a single Dell PC running XP Home Edition. The User IDs and individual iTunes library files – iTunes Library.itl and .xml – are stored in the personal directory – “c:\Documents and Settings\my documents\my music\iTunes – per the defaults when iTunes is installed.
The only way I am able to recover from this is to delete the library files for each user and rebuild the library by going into “file=>add folder to library” and pointing at the iTunes music folder on the ‘e’ drive. I do not lose any music files but this is a very annoying bug which should be fixed. I have looked in the iTunes user forum and many people have experienced similar problems on both PC and Mac environment. None of the suggested fixes on the forum have solved my problem I have also spoken to Apple Support about this problem twice, including a Level 2 support tech. None of them was able to solve this problem.

I have had the same problem. it seems to have stemmed from the upgrade. However, I have over 40 gig of files on an external HD. I was wondering how you reload delete the titles from ITunes and reload them back into ITunes from the external HD. I want to avoid deleting the actual file from the HD; only from ITunes. thoughts?

  • ITunes loses track of music

    iTunes 9.0.1 under SL 10.6.1
How can iTunes lose track of music after I just added an entire folder full of music using the Add to Library command?
I select all my music. Delete all music. Do not move music files to Trash. Select Add to Library. Select the root folder where all of my music is stored. It adds all 18,000+ files. A new list of songs is displayed. As I browse through them, the missing file exclamation points start appearing next to songs. I double-click the missing file, it says it can't locate the song and asks me to help it locate it. I locate it, navigating through the same folder I used above to Add to Library, re-map the missing song. Repeat about 5,000 times.
The songs reside on a secondary hard drive in my MacPro. This is a constant game of cat-and-mouse. After adding a few songs, sometimes iTunes just gets tired and crashes.

If I rename items from within the iTunes interface then iTunes will make the changes and move things accordingly.
Yes, that is what I wrote the box is for.
If I take an item in iTunes and move it in the Finder to the Trash and empty the trash then iTunes will give me the !
    And?
That has nohing to do with the Keep box being checked or unchecked.
Uncheck that box then toss a file into the trash and iTunes will still show an exclamation mark.

  • ITunes Loses Tracks

Hello good people of the board.
I imported all my files over from my old iMac to my new one and have an annoying problem. iTunes loses tracks seemingly at random. I assumed that it was a glitch during the transfer which caused the little exclamation mark to appear next to tracks meaning that I would have to manually tell iTunes where the file wass. I've noticed that it's starting to happen with tracks imported directly on to my new computer though. I've searched the forums but no-one seems to have this exact problem, all the others seem to be related to external hard drives which I'm not using. Any ideas?

Have you tried 'Advanced:Consolidate Library...' option? I've never needed to do that yet (when I occasionally get the !, I just navigate to the relevant iTunes folder to re-establish the link, but if you're getting a lot of them, maybe you need to Consolidate? )
Try it out, it can't hurt, see if it helps.

  • When I update iTunes, it "loses" all my songs stored in a non-default location.  How to prevent?

I store my music library on an external hard drive.  Whenever I update iTunes, it "loses" all my songs.  When the iTunes library updates, all my tracks get little exclamation points next to them because they are not in the default (C:\my music\itunes music) location.  I have my ways of fixing this...but they are a pain.  Is there a way to have my music files not get lost when I update iTunes?
    Thanks,
    Brett

    Hi dklowther,
iCloud only houses access to Music purchased through iTunes. Any music you put on your iPhone from CDs or other sources would only be on your phone and in your iTunes library that you used to sync the songs to your iPhone. You need to move the contents of your iTunes library from your old computer to your new one....

  • HT1688 all i want to do is add songs from my new computer to my iphone 4s. But that doesnot seem to be working.. Itunes wnats me to sync and lose all my music on my iphone. This is very frustrating i dont want to lose over 700 songs!!!!

Itunes is not letting me add songs from my new computer to my iphone.
Instead it wants me to sync my music library and lose all the songs on my phone. i have over 700 songs i cannot lose them just because i want to add 10 new songs... PLEASE HELP. also i am using the new CONFUSSING ITUNES 11.

This has always been the case.
All iphones have always only synced to one computer at a time.
Syncing to another will indeed erase the current content and replace with content from the new computer.
Copy everything from your old computer, or your backup copy of your old computer, to the new one.

Copy all the content on your iPod back to your PC and into iTunes. Then go ahead and sync the iPod with your new library.
See this older post from another forum member Zevoneer covering the different methods and software available to assist you with the task of copying content from your iPod back to your PC and into iTunes.

  • Hi my laptop with my itunes lubrary has crashed so i got a new one but i dont want to sync my iphone to the new laptop incase i lose all my songs on my iphone. how do i sync to a new one without losing everything

    hi i need help
hi my laptop with my itunes lubrary has crashed so i got a new one but i dont want to sync my iphone to the new laptop incase i lose all my songs on my iphone. how do i sync to a new one without losing everything

The right way is to restore the backup that you kept of your old computer onto your new one. If it is too late for that before you do anything set up a backup process for the new one so when it crashes (note I said "when", not "if") you won't be faced with this problem again.
In lieu of that the apps already mentioned will help you get content off the phone if it was not purchased from iTunes. But it it WAS purchased from iTunes just connect the phone to your new computer, Authorize iTunes on the new computer and choose "Transfer Purchases" from the iTunes file menu.

  • If my itunes is corrupted and needs to be reinstalled, will I lose all my songs? What do I need to do to keep everything?

I cannot open itunes.  When I click on it a message pops up saying that itunes is corrupted and needs to be reinstalled.  If I reinstall it will I lose all my songs?  I have over 2,000 songs that I cannot lose!  What do I need to do to fix it and keep all my songs?

Aha, a somewhat different question. See Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device.

  • With using any version of iTunes, whenever I import songs into my library using the "add to library" function, iTunes adds those songs in songs' alphabetical order. This is pretty annoying since it does not preserve the logical track number or album.

With using any version of iTunes, whenever I import songs into my library using the "add to library" function, iTunes adds those songs in songs' alphabetical order. This is pretty annoying since it does not preserve the logical track number or even the album sort order (for example when adding 2 albums stored in a unique folder). Anyone has any ideas ? Been stumped for a while....!!!

hi i had the same problem today when i updated my itunes to latest version. however, i have just found my songs in the 'itunes media' folder. this was accessed through 'my music'  then keep clicking through until you find itunes media and all my library songs were in there and i then just added these files to my library and all were restored however, i have lost all my playlists but at least my 700 songs are back. very dissapointed with apple that they have let this happen with their latest update, the previous version was miles better than this one . hope you find them. stevo

  • Itunes loses song information

I update all the song tag information using windows explorer and then drag and drop into itunes 11.  The song information e.g. artist, title, comments, do not show for all songs.  Itunes intermittently grabs some information and not other data from the song tags.  Additionally, I make changes to the song data in itunes 11 and randomly the information is lost over the course of a month. What is the problem?  This is quite frustrating as other programs show the information correctly, as through Windows media player, but itunes does not.  This has been a recurring problem over the last 10 years with itunes and seems to be linked with upgrades.

    Hi,
iTunes Match uses the sound footprint of the track to be matched or uploaded. So it is not essential that you have complete metadata info. If the music has been sourced from commercial discs, you are likely to get a match if it is in iTunes. One thing match will not do is update any missing metadata.
There are apps available that can help complete missing data. I have no personal experience of such apps - maybe someone else can point you in the right direction.

  • HT4914 If I do not resubscribe after the first year with itunes match will any songs that have been upgraded in quality lose this upgrade or will it remain?

If I do not resubscribe after the first year with itunes match will any songs that have been upgraded in quality lose this upgrade or will it remain?

    Dottie,
If you want to upgrade the quality of a song in your library, you have to delete the library copy and download the matched copy.
Once it is downloaded, it will stay in your library even you don't renew Match.

  • Itunes loses my songs

Why does itunes lose my songs? they appear one minute but gone the next? I have organize my songs enabled and copy files to folder. I have the latest version of itunes.

Glenn, there is a huge difference between the music no longer showing up in the iTunes library and the music actually being deleted from your computer. Could you do a search and confirm that the music you have labeled "deleted" is actually no longer on your hard drive? Use Windows' search function to locate music files, and either look for specific ones (if you know the file name) or for the format (.mp3, .m4a, etc.).
Just because iTunes can't see the music anymore doesn't necessarily mean it has been removed from your hard drive

I would recommend you use a program called senuti that allows you to copy your songs over to a new computer from an iPod. Unfortunatlly you have to pay for the full version but it allows you to have 1000 free song capacity of copying over and a movie counts as the capacity of 1 song.
