ITunes Lossless to ACC conversion

I've been playing around with the idea of a media server, and have come up with some questions prior to doing this...
Question: Has anyone come up with an automator script that will convert lossless files from one library into ACC, then deposit them in another library?
Why this is important to me:
-goal is to have large external HD as a media server with a mac mini/iTV as front end.
-would like to have iMac hardwired to external HD via Firewire for data manipulation/editing, then upload into 'Master Source' file for photos, music, movies
-would like mac mini/iTV (eventually) to act as always on front end client for external HD; would be hardwired/firewired to external HD to prevent lag time; thus could use front row for browsing photos, music, movies off TV monitor
NOTE: no desire for cable/sattelite viewing - what I want to watch I would buy on DVD (backup reasons)
-would like to have music stored in lossless format on external HD for home stereo use, etc, and have a duplicate library in AAC on desktop for syncing with ipod nano
-look for my posts on Front Row issues/wish list for TS file viewing, problems with multiple iPhoto libraries, iTunes for mulitple libraries/browsing

... when i come across a future lossless audio file that i want to convert to ACC what bitrate is recommended for a quality imitation of MP3 audio?
The most common bitrate for either AAC or MP3 is 256, but if you want that little increment of quality go with 320.
Somewhere above about 160 the differences between MP3 and AAC vanish, so if you have a bitrate that you like for MP3 use it also for AAC.

  • Converting Lossless to ACC

    New to the forum...so, hello...
OK. I've archived my CD collection in lossless on an external hardrive which also contains all iTunes library info. etc. There is nothing on my laptop apart from iTunes software itself.
I know I can convert the lossless files to ACC using iTunes (for my iPod), but what I want to do is put the ACC files either on the HD of my laptop or on another (smaller) external HD.
How (can?) I do this? If so, where will iTunes put the "new library" for the ACC files?
    Many thanks for any help.

When iTunes does the format conversion, it puts the converted file into your iTunes library, as you have specified in Edit > Preferences > Advanced > General. (Convert one file and watch how this works.) If that is not where you want them, you can (a) let it convert and then move them, or (b) use a conversion program that lets you specify where to place them, such as Switch.
Note that the use of iTunes to support parallel libraries (e.g. one lossless and one compressed) is not well supported so you will have to improvise a bit.

  • I bought 3 records converted now in AAC. iTunes doesn't accept conversion.

I bought 3 Apple now converted in AAC. iTunes doesn't allow conversion in MP3.

So are you saying you purchase thee albms from the iTunes Store (which come in the AAC format) and want to convert them to MP3's?  Is that correct?

  • Lossless to ACC Automator Conversion/Multiple Libraries/External Hard drive

I've been playing around with setting up a home media server, and have run into a few issues and have a few questions about this.
Question 1: Best way to rip into lossless format?
-apple lossless vs. other: has anyone had problems streaming lossless files to iTunes/Airport Extreme?
Question 2: Best way to manage multiple libraries?
-Library manager vs. option key during startup?

Question 3:Any Automator scripts to convert Lossless to AAC, then save to desktop?

BTW any external HD that have 2 firewire ports? Most that I see either have two USB 2.0 ports or 1 USB and 1 firewire port

  • ACC Conversion w/iTunes

I'm trying to convert this file to an ACC and once its done it still says that its an MPEG. Does it have to be ACC anyways?
    Stan

It doesnt have to be AAC, but it helps if the MPEG file is a large one. If your MPEG file is more than one meg per minute, then it will be smaller if you convert it to AAC with no discernable quality reduction. you will save a LOT of space.
EXAMPLE: A song file that is 5 minutes and 45 seconds is 8MB. After I converted it, it magically became: 5.4MB. This will save tons of space if you have several thousand songs.
If the track is a podcast MPEG however, then i reccomend not convert it because a 20 minute podcast is usually set to the lowest MPEG setting and is only like 7 MB, whereas the same file in AAC would be like 18MB.

  • My itunes wont convert acc to mp3

    can anyone help ??
im trying to add music to my ipod from legitamate cds that i have bought it says they have to be converted from ACC to MP3.. fine its always comeup with that so i click convert... it gets through a few of the songs in the album then stops responding and i have to end the program on task manager...
    what going on???
this has never happened before its only since i installed the latest update for itunes!

I've just tried importing a WMA file and iTunes converted it as the file was imported. So that suggests that you should need to do any conversions, simply use File/Add File to library (or File/Add folder to library) and iTunes will do it for you.
Alternatively, import from the CDs your bought. It might be quicker.

  • From Lossless into ACC

Hi, I store my music in Itunes as Apple Lossless, it's not so great for the Ipod however, I was wondering if its possible to get itunes to automatically recode my music to ACC as it moves my music onto my Ipod Nano?

    Been there, am doing that.
I have 186 GB iTunes library, almost all of which is Apple Lossless. I started converting it to ACC (default 128) last evening at 7:21 PM. It is now 8:39 PM and about 3000 of the 8549 songs have been converted.
Here is my post with a very similar situation. The response (though it's time-consuming) was exactly what I wanted. Good luck.

  • Is it possible for two people to use one iMac with iPhone and iPad separate iTunes and iCloud acc?

Apologies if this is a very obvious question. I have one iMac that my husband and I use, he has an iPhone that he syncs with the iMac via iTunes for app such as docs to go. I recently purchased an iPad, I want to also sync with the iMac. Is it possible to use two iTunes and two iCloud acc to one iMac? We would like to pick and choose what we sync as we keep separate docs etc on the iMac, can this be done?

Yes.  Just set up your own account in System Preferences > Accounts (User &groups in Mountain Lion).  You'll have your own seperate everything including mail.

  • How Do i Change the itunes file from ACC to MP3 ?

I tunes is kinda makin me mad at how it seems that i purchase music from them and then i can only play the music on my ipod and through itunes, i'd like to change the files from .acc to .mp3. Is there a way to do this? I just like using windows media player to play my music, i'd also like to have the album artwork and every thing transfer flawlessly into my windows media player insted of having to search for everything and rename it all. Thanks for any help thats given in advance.

Tracks purchased from any legal download store carrying major-label content, including the iTunes Store, are copy-protected and so cannot be directly converted to any other format. You can, however, burn the tracks purchased from the iTunes Store out to an audio CD, at which point it will act just like any other normal audio CD.
Forum Tip: Since you're new here, you've probably not discovered the Search feature available on every Discussions page, but next time, it might save you time (and everyone else from having to answer the same question multiple times) if you search a couple of ways for a topic, both in the relevant forums, in the User Tips Library and in the Apple Knowledge Base before you post a question.
    Regards.

  • ALAC to ACC Conversion During a Sync

In the past I imported most of the iTunes music on my Mac is in ALAC format.  The ACC formats are pretty good now so I don't mind using 256 ACC.
Will iTunes convert my ALAC music on my Mac to 256 ACC on my iPhone.  If so, how do I configure it to do that?

We are getting closer, but still not quite agreeing.
You said, "you don't need to restore. If you removed the 128 MP3 in iTunes, just sync. It will remove the MP3 version and put the new version on."
Assume there is no 128 MP3 song in iTunes on the Mac to delete.  The 128 MP3 version on the iPhone came from downconverting during a previous download.
"Or simply make the change, stop the sync and restart the sync.
Or let it complete the sync then resync it."
Your second statement is not consistent with your first, which was, "I assume an iTunes sync would not replace the 128 MP3 iPhone versions with 256 ACC ones."
Are you suggesting I go through the files on the iPhone, one by one, and delete all that have compression quality less than 256 ACC?  That would be tedious.  I just plugged in my iPhone, selected Music, and then tried to sort the Kind column by clicking on "Kind".  It did not sort them by "Kind".  It starts listing ACC, then lists MPEG, then lists ACC again.  As far as I can tell I can only sort on Genres, Artists, and Albums.  Even if I could sort on Kind, it would not sort on Bitrate, so I could not group the 256 ACC files.
So I state again, there is no non-tedious method to upgrade the 128 MP3 files on the iPhone, except for deleting and syncing the all of the music on the iPhone.

  • ACC Conversion

I just hooked up my Nano and hoped that, like with the Shuffle, it would convert songs into ACC file type before putting them onto the ipod, therefore conserveing space on the IPOD and leaving the song in origanal format on my computer. The Shuffle has an option under preferences to do this, but when I go to the preferences with the Nano this option is not avaiible. Any ideas why not?

Personally, I thing that would be an undesirable feature. I doubt there is anything gained by converting an MP3 to AAC. About the only time this would be useful is when trying to load WMA or another format the iPod won't play... While I'd like to see the iPod support playback of certain types, it would be acceptable to me if iTunes could at least read them and convert them to AAC upon upload to my iPod. I have some tunes in ogg and FLAC... Until that day comes, get yourself a copy of dBpowerAMP (http://www.dbpoweramp.com/). It's an excellent tool for converting music from one format to another.

  • Is ACC conversion now 256 VBR?

Because not too long ago I converted all my music files to ACC 128 Kbps.
Now I can't convert to that level anymore. But with a minimum of 256 VBR.
1 song at about 4 minutes takes up like 8.3 MB! Too high where you can't tell the difference. Between 128 and 256!

oh, no... Apple didnt have much to update in 8.1 so they just took an old jeans, washed it & tagged it as brand new,,, LOL
On top of iTunes, there are options... select edit>preferences>General> *Import settings* >Import Using: AAC> Setting> Custom ----set according to your preference, 128 kbps is fine +for most+, expect do a little justice for +rock songs+, as 256 kbps offers much higher sound quality, so you hear all the amazing details of guitar, drums.. etc.

  • WMA to ACC conversion: memory problem addition

The question: is there anyways to convert my WMA files as I go rather than deleting them afterwards?
The reason I ask is because I simply don't have enough disk space for two sets of my songs. My music isn't exactly consolidated neatly so it would be pretty brutal to convert some, find the selected songs, delete them and convert some more. Any help would be much appreciated.

Try burning your songs to audio CD in Windows Media Player and then import that CD into iTunes in whatever format you prefer.
