ITunes makes a copy of my music or just makes links?
Hi everyone,
I got a little question about iTunes that I don't know if true or not. I have a large amount of CD's all in MP3 and I always use iTunes to play, retouch and more with it and when I always add music to iTunes (just drag it into the window of iTunes) I would like to know if iTunes makes and exact copy of my music or just symbolic links. I don't want have double of files all over my Mac increasing the space that takes.
If it makes a copy of my music should I delete the original files?

I don't really let iTunes manage the organization of my media, but I do keep it all inside the iTunes Media folder. If I want to add new content downloaded from say Amazon I usually move it inside the iTunes Media\Automatically Add to iTunes folder, then fix any tagging problems that might make iTunes break up the album (see Grouping tracks into albums), before using a custom script to move the tracks exactly where I want them and update iTunes so that it knows where to find them. Moving the files, rather than copying them myself, or letting iTunes make copies, means there aren't any originals to delete later. Having everything inside the iTunes Media folder generally ensures that backing up and copying the library to a new computer are hassle free operations.

Help, please.. ITunes will not copy all my music to IPod
I have a 2nd generation iPod Nano and I'm having some trouble. I somehow accidentally (apparently I'm a moron) restored my iPod so that everything was erased. I have my library backed up on disc, but all my songs are still showing in the ITunes Library. I have 575 songs. When I sync my iPod to ITunes, it gives me an error message saying "Some songs could not be copied because it is not authorized for this computer (100 problems)", something along those lines. After that, it will only copy 340 songs from my ITunes library to my iPod.
Can anyone tell me why this is happening and how I can get all my music transferred back to my iPod?Have you authorized your computer to the iTunes Store account under which those tracks were purchased? You can either play one of the tracks (or additional tracks if any were purchased through a different iTunes Store account) or use the Authorize command under the Store menu in iTunes.

I've purchased and downloaded an album from the iTunes store. It has 5 tracks. Tracks 1-4 are all fine. Track 5 is broken - it should have approx 15 minutes of music, but only plays to just under 4 minutes. This happens on my computer and on my iPod. How can I fix this please?
I've tried going to the "Purchased (new)" option in the quick links on the right hand side of the iTunes store. I thought I'd see an option for "Music" on the page it takes me to, but I don't get that option: I only see Apps and Books.
I'm using the computer that I purchased and downloaded the album from. It is authorised for this account.
I'm not aware of interrupting the download yesterday - it all seemed OK to me at the time and I thought it had completed successfully.
The album is Dvořák: Cello Concerto, Zuill Bailey, Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra & Jun Markl. It's the last track (In Nature's Realm) that's got the problem.

I need help. I have a Window's 8 computer and a 6th generation Ipod nano. I have reinstalled Itunes multiple times and have read all the troubleshooting ideas to do it, but my ipod is still not being recognized. This is not the first time I've plugged the Ipod in. I need help
This came from another thread, but worked for me. Problem is with newest iTunes 4.62. Unistall iTunes, as well as its helper programs (Apple Application Support, Apple Mobile Device Support, and Apple Software Update). Reboot, and reinstall iTunes. It will reinstall all the other ones and you should be able to connect your nano. Good luck.

Itunes could not copy music to the ipad because the file could not be converted

I am trying to get an album I purchased from iTunes copied to music on my iPad. I get the message, "iTunes could not copy ... music to the iPad because the file could not be converted." This happens on only two tracts from the album (Mendelsshon: Concerto for Violin and Orchestra).
I have tried deleting the album from iTunes and downloading it again from iCloud. I have erased it from my iPad, too. No matter what I do the same two tracts keep having problems.
Any answers. All help would be appreciated.
JudyThis is strange. Perhaps the iTunes Store version of the track is somehow corrupted? That happened once to me, and I submitted a report, and a few weeks later there was a new iTunes Store version that worked ok.
In the meantime, you could try converting it within iTunes to a different format. Use the menu command "Advanced >> Create xxxx version," where "xxxx" is whatever you've set in preferences as your "Import settings." It needs to be different from 256k AAC, which is what you have already from the store.
If iTunes doesn't choke on the conversion, chances are your iPad will accept it. -

I copied our entire music folder from our old pc on to the new imac, and all the apps, music etc is there, but no individual libarys, we had 5 very different ones, when pressing and holding the alt key on opeing itunes, nothing happens it just opens into itunes, no option to choose or create a libary, what am i doing wrong?Did you copy the entire iTunes folder, not just media? This includes the critical library.itl file.

Now you say you had 5 libraries. If you really mean that then you would have to have copied 5 different iTunes folders in their entirety, not just one folder. Anyway, something makes me feel you did not copy a whole iTunes folder and all its subfolders and files, you only copied the music.
On the starting with the option (alt) key held down I really don't know what to advise. It works for me hundreds of times and just about everybody else here. The only thing I can suggest is to hold the key down longer or perhaps start iTunes and then 1 second later hold down the key for a few seconds. -
Itunes and appstore problems:

ITunes makes different folders when adding music,videos & pictures

I use Windows 7. I have found that when adding music,videos & pictures iTunes makes different folder for it.
I have around 17GB of songs & music. but when I added them to iTunes library it made different folder containing all my songs. Now I have around 34GB of songs. What the ****! It does same for videos & pics.

When adding a new song (or any media file) to the iTunes library, it copies those files to a folder (usually C:\Users\<username>\Music\iTunes\iTunes Media\Music ). iTunes does this to keep a backup of your songs. To deactivate this go to Edit>Preference>Advanced (or Ctrl+, then go to Advanced) and uncheck the checkbox "Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library". iTunes will not copy the music files to its folder. But there is one downside to doing so, if you change the directory (folder or place) of the music that you added to the iTunes library (without copying to its folder), the music will not be played. Trying to play such a song will provide you with a messagebox that asks you to relocate the song or to ignore it. So it is always a good idea to allow iTunes copy the music files to the specified folder automatically. But if you are concerned about the disk space, you can delete the songs' copy of yours (the directory you select).
If you want to add some songs to the iTunes Media folder, you right click a song (or multiple songs) and click on "Consolidate Files...". These songs will be copied to the iTunes Media folder and it will be there whatever happens.
If you are afriad that copying a songs will not allow you to copy the music files to another directory from the iTunes Media folder, you shouldn't be. The folder is similar to that of anyother.
Adding a song without using iTunes is also possible, just copy the songs you want to add to "C:\Users\<username>\Music\iTunes\iTunes Media\Automatically Add to iTunes".

Is there a way to make a smart "playlist" of specific books in my iTunes library, and copy ONLY THOSE books to an iOS device? I own an iPad and an iPhone but I want different books on each different device. When I've tried this, the iOS devices don't seem to respond.
There is no playlist for iBooks, butther eis nothing to preent you from choosing to download specific titles from itunes, or syncing just specific titles to an individual device.

I have an iPhone and I sync playlists to it from iTunes. (I have far in excess of 16GB of music/podcasts.)
What I want to do is permanently share my music library with all devices in the house, so I'm planning on buying a NAS server that has a built-in iTunes server. (I don't want to just use my computer to share and leave it on 24/7 because that is a phenominal waste of power.) That way all networked computers can just load the library under the 'SHARED' option in the left pane. However, this had me wondering about how I will continue to sync my music to my iPhone? I wondered if I will need to maintain a duplicate of the library on one of my computers, and then have my iPhone sync with that. Otherwise I'm not sure how it'll work.
Any help/comments/suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
Tom.Incidentally, my first thought was to map a network share from the NAS to my computer, so that my music files appear on the Z: drive, say on my computer. I could then set up iTunes to store music etc in that folder, and to copy all new items to that folder. However, if I do that, all that'll happen is that on my NAS, the library file will become out of date as I add music to the collection but not to the index.

I have copied over my music files to a new computer and the music shows on itunes but wont play. When I track where the song is located it is reading the wrong information. How do I change this as Edit>Preferences has the right location?
Select one of the tracks with a broken link, press ctrl-i to Get Info. Say No when iTunes asks if you would like to locate the track, then look at the Summary tab for the location expects to find the file in.
Now try to locate the file in question. The two locations should give a clue as to what to do next.
Here is an example with a file I've deliberately moved from the new layout to the old pre-iTunes 9 layout.
This means iTunes is expecting to find the file at:
D:\iTunes\iTunes Media\Music\a-ha\Take On Me\01 Take On Me.mp3
but it isn't there because I've moved it to:
D:\iTunes\iTunes Media\a-ha\Take On Me\01 Take On Me.mp3
which is where it would have lived back in iTunes 8 (though the media folder would have been called iTunes Music back then as well).
If you can provide the expected and actual locations of a broken track I should be able to suggest the easiest way to resolve things.

To change music folder, do I have to let Itunes do the copying?
I copied my iTunes Music folder (just using the Windows copy function) from my desktop computer to my (new) HP server in a different room. Now I want iTunes to pull music from the server. Do I have to let iTunes copy the files in order to do this? I already copied them!! Now, my desktop is back in a separate room (when I copied the files it was temporarily in the server room and hooked up to the server via my router with a cable from desktop to router) -- recopying the files wirelessly now would take a lot longer (plus be repeating what I already did!). Thanks for any info.

Either let iTUnes do the copy for you or fix the links in the library after iTunes cannot find the files. Unless iTunes does the move it will not know where the files are.

Why do I get a "ITunes can't copy music to the IPad?
ITunes stopped copying songs to my IPad 1. I'm upgraded to the most recent IOs 5 version, but when I try to copy my music from ITunes (on a Windows laptop) to my IPad it wont work. I get an error message that says "ITunes is unable to copy music to ___'s IPad because ITunes is unable to copy music to the IPad. This is a first, I've always been able to transfer my ITunes library to my IPad. I'm not just talking about music Ive copied to ITunes from CD's, it won't copy any of the songs I've purchased through ITunes.
I do have some music on my IPad from ITunes but it wont allow me to add additional music.

Uncheck the Sync Music heading in iTunes and then sync the iPad to remove the music. Quit iTunes, and then connect the iPad again, launch iTunes and select the Sync Music heading again to sync the Music back to the iPad. -
