ITunes Match causing battery drain and high CPU load on iPhone 5(S)?

Hi.
I'm wondering if anyone else is seeing this — coz i see no such reports anywhere:
On my iPhone 5S, ever since iOS 7.0 (and continuing with 7.1), downloading songs form iTunes Match, downloading any album from Match is really slow, heats hop the CPU and drains the battery. (As ar as  recall, all was fine under iOS 6).
Here’s steps:
i go to the Music app, tap “download all” for an album, or maybe a whole artist. The Downloading/Pending icons appear. Because status reporting is vague, i switch over to the iTunes Store app and its Downloads tab, which provides more info.
Here i see the first three songs downloading fairly quickly (i have fast WiFi), but once the progress bar reached 70%-ish, they go into Processing, and stay there for anywhere between 3 to 10 minutes. Eventually, they drop form the list (i.e. are done) and the spiel repeats with the next set.
While this is happening, my iPhone goes incredibly (“uncomfortable to hold” hot), and i can literally see the battery go down.
My iTunes library is largish, but not huge. i have about 17k songs, most of them iTunes purchased. (since Match has a limit of 25k *plus* iTunes-purchased songs, i’d expect 17k to be child’s play). On my phone, i have very few to no songs at all.
The other day, i completely reset my phone, didn’t restore form backup, and set it up fresh with only handful of essential apps. I’ve been seeing incredible battery life — i was still on 30% after over three days, yesterday. I then decided to try Match again — fresh, for the first time since the reset. I triggered the download of *one* album. The battery went down 8 percentage points while that album was downloading, and again the phone heated up immensely. Once the download was done, the drainage slowed down, but still seemed excessive compared to before (i was at 16% within an hour or so). I then shut down and rebooted the phone — and batter life was back to be excellent — the remaining 16% got the phone over the night.
Ok, so the first instinct is, of course: something if screwed up with my iTunes Match library, cloud side. right? So i grabbed my girlfriend’s iPhone 5 (also iOS 7.1; *much* smaller and completely separate iTunes Match Library). Triggered the download of an album and — lo and behold — the same behavior: songs hang in Processing for long (maybe not quite as along as for mine, but it’s i didn’t measure), and 3% battery drop for downloading 10 songs, and the battery continuing to drop faster than usual, after.
So of a sampling size of two, both libraries and (totally unrelated) Apple ID accounts show the same or similar problem. Yet no-one else seems to be reporting this, or similar, problems with Match? What am i missing?
I should also add that i see no such issues on my iPad (also running iOS 7.1 now), nor on my MacBook Air (my main Mac has the full iTunes library on disk locally). Downloading songs there works fine and prompt. I also have no problems *streaming* songs form Match.
*Does* anyone else see this? Any suggestions what to do to address this?
I’ve also filed a bug report with apple as radar://15964682.
thanx!
marc

I am experiencing the same issue as dwarfland. I have a black 64GB iPhone 5s running iOS version 7.1.1 and a grandfathered unlimited data plan with AT&T. I have had an iTunes Match subscription pretty much since it was introduced. I currently have around 19500 songs in my music library and try to have only around 2000-2500 songs physically located on the phone itself (all of my "top-rated" songs in a single playlist). I have recently needed to re-download all these "top-rated" songs after I restored my phone from a backup, wiping all the songs from my phone. Thanks for posting your experiences, hopefully someone from Apple will notice and help us out with a solution.

  • Battery drain with High CPU (v6.0 Bundle 3049) due to module net.rim.io.impl

    Hi,
I upgraded my Torch (9800) a week ago, and have been noticiing battery drain issues.  The problem is NOT persistent, but is happening most of the times though.  I am currently on OS v6.0 bundle 3049 (v6.0.0.706, platforn 6.6.0.246).  My Wifi and Bluetooth are always OFF.  Only using the Bell network, for which I have all the 5 bars available.
I have investigated further, and I found that the Blackberry System Software was the one running with the highest CPU - usually in the high 70s, to even high 90s.  And this was consistent over hours, until the battery was dead.  I have since removed any apps I suspecpected - such as Nice Office and LinkedIn.  But the problem still persists.
Battery pull has been done multiple times, as well as I have checked, and there are are no OS updates available.
Now, currently, only the basic apps are loaded (Alt-Back) : Home, Messages, BBM, Phone, Borwser.  All other apps are closed or exited.
Investigating further into the modules within the BB System Software, I have found that the net_rim_io_impl, is the one consuming ALL of the CPU.  I am not sure where/what this module does - so I am unclear on what service within the BB I can turn OFF to get rid of the issue.
Please see the following screen shots, the CPU for the System drops a bit, as Options uses up some, else, it goes back to 90s, if left alone :-
And within the BB System Software :-
Please assist and guide, with either a fix to the module, or else, via some workaround, wherein some service can be stopped or some setting can be changed to avoid this battery drain.
    Thanks!

  • 3 Kernal panics and high CPU load

2 problems: 1.) I've had 3 kernal panics since I bought my macbook a couple weeks ago. The latest one happened when I was just reading something on the screen, then I adjusted the screen angle (and prehaps the screen saver came on then too) and the screen goes black and the kernal panic notice comes up.
Another kernal panic came when I unpluged my headphones, and the 3rd I can't remember.
Is this a lot? It's more than 1 a week for moderate usage.
Now today I find that the CPU load goes up over 50 % (40-50 of it user) as seen with activity monitor, iStat pro wigit and core duo temp wigit. The temp also goes up to 80 degrees, all with no programs open! In addition, the total CPU usage listed in activity monitor is around 15%. Where is all this extra CPU usage coming from, and how do I stop it? Reseting sometimes solves the problem for a few minutes, then it is back.

Glad to know we're making progress:
Now I'm way out of my depth having only ssh'd a noisy five-year-old, but I recall seeing on sites like MacIntouch that the Finder often tries to endlessly remount a share using SAMBA.
    For instance: (from http://www.MacInTouch.com)
<<A lot of people have notice very heavy CPU load, but have been unable to determine which process it is that is causing it.
I had this same problem, tracked it down and worked around it before learning that many others were facing it. It's caused by Windoze File Sharing/Samba. For me, the problem only happened if Samba was enabled across a reboot. In this situation, nbmd tries to start up, hits an error, and quits, and is immediately relaunched. This repeats in excess of 20 times/second, causing the incredible load. I'm not sure why it doesn't show up as load, at least in the kernel task, but it doesn't.
The solution for me was to simply quit Windoze File Sharing and restart it. That generally allowed nbmd to come up without problems, but they would start up again after a reboot. I finally just turned it off WFS altogether (don't use it that often).>>
There now, that's as much as I know, and I offer it in the hope that those who know what ssh and SAMBA actually are, might be able to make some use of it...

  • Intel i217-LM NIC Causes Broadcast storm and High CPU

Wanted to post this here to help others that may be experiencing issues with broadcasts.
If you have PC's with the Intel i217-LM NIC if you don't have the latest driver from Intel the NIC will cause an IPV6 broadcast storm when the computer goes into sleep/hibernate.  You have to have at least two PC's on your network in sleep/hibernate mode.  It causes the same affect as a network loop.  In my network it would cause the MDF CPU to go to 100% and basically shut the network down.
We have Lenovo M93 desktops that have this NIC and I know that there are other PC's that have his same NIC and experience the same problem.
When the broadcast storm is happening you can issue the command
show interfaces | include is up|line|broadcast on your MDF switch to find which interfaces have high broadcasts.  You may have to trace it through your uplinks to your IDF's.  You can then shut those interfaces to stop the broadcast storm.
Your long term solution will be to get the latest NIC driver from Intel and update your PC's.

It's connected IPV4 but because of the faulty NIC driver it starts broadcasting IPV6 when in sleep/hibernate mode.

  • Macbook 2, 1 battery issues and high CPU utilization

I haven't used my macbook 2 1 (intel core duo, 2.16GHZ) for 3 or 4 months. Before it was working fine but now it says that the battery is not charging, although the laptop still works when plugged in. The power report from the system profiler is at the bottom of the thread.
I use this computer primarily for music making using native instruments reaktor, but have found that the CPU utilisation of my patches has doubled compared to when I was using them 4 months ago. 5've not got any other programs open while doing this and all the audio set up is exactly the same as before.
Will buying a new battery sort this out? Any ideas for how to bring the CPU utilisation back to how it was before?
Thanks in advance to anyone who can help!

  • Flash player and high cpu load again

It is that time again.  Nothing new to report, it appears others have the same problem, so I copied a couple of comments posted last year by nationfam1 that accurately describe the problem.  The only difference for me is that I almost exclusively use Firefox.
"Why does flash player demand so much cpu usage all of a sudden when a year or so ago it did not do so and worked better on FF 3 different browsers? I now use Firefox version 24.0 28.0  and IE 10 and when I watch a video or play a game Flash player all but crashes my computer by using almost all of the power of my CPU!
...when I am on Firefox and try to watch a video or play a stupid game to relax I cannot hardly do so because Adobe Flash Player sucks up all the CPU and RAM to operate. Why do two instances of Adobe Flash Player run when I am playing one game in one tab and only have one window open. It did not use to do this. I was asked for feedback on one of the games and I told them it would be nice if the utility that the game was based off of did not screw it up all the time. Have you not read in these forums where it has caused people's computer to overheat to the extent of crashing..."
I have updated FF (build # 28.0) and the plugins but no success, does anyone have a suggestion or two?
    Regards

Hi ... I use admin account only to install new software or games ... for all other uses I log in as an ordinary account
But even when logged in with admin account the same prb persists ... cause of this flash player prb I have even stopped playing  games on FB & Zynga ...
For this flash player problem I even took it to acer service center and since I have extended service warranty the engineers there ran acomplete check on ram, hdd, graphic card and they also did a complete fresh install of win 7 home premium 64 bit edition. They even completely serviced it, cleaned it and applied new thermal paste ...  but even they were baffled that my system can stand up to high intensity graphic games running from HDD or DVD rom or USB pen drive but if I try to run graphic flash player games for long ie castleville or watch a long movie on you tube then flash player can single handedly cause CPU usage to be constantly high leading to system getting heated up.
Guess will just have to be content without flash ... but some sites require flash player to be enabled and therein lies the problem

  • Syslogd makes high CPU Load and standby mode doesn´t work.

After updating to Leopard I see high CPU Load caused by syslogd daemon(40%-80%) and my MacBook has problems with standby mode. After stopping the white LED lights and CPU fan speeds up. Is there any chance to fix these problems?

OK.. here's where I'm at with troubleshooting this. As I said before, for ME it occurred simultaneous to a low or out of memory situation. I don't know if syslogd was using my the ram, or if the low ram was a symptom of an issue that syslogd was getting caught up in reporting... but the system log file had tens of THOUSANDS of out of memory errors listed. Almost all were from dashboard.
So... I've done the following. In dashboard I closed ALL open widgets. I disabled spaces (since in another thread someone indicated it used a lot of memory). I ran Leopard Cache Cleaner and used it to perform maintenances, run the os scripts and rebuild caches and so on. Rebooted.
Now its working fine! Since then its been over 24 hrs and I STILL have over 300megs of ram reported free on a 1 gig system. I've used everything else like normal (safari, mail, ichat, itunes, etc..). Where the problem used to happen after a couple of hours after a reboot every time, now it seems normal. No out of mem, and syslogd is running normally (apparently).
I will run a few apps that I havent run in a while and see if those create an issue. If not, later today I will enable spaces and see how that does after a few hours. Finally I'll add in the dashboard widgets one at a time to see if the issue lies there. I'll report back here if I discover anything.

  • Poor battery life and high temperatures on MacBook Pro Retina 15"

I'm having never-ending problems with poor battery life and high temperatures on a MacBook Pro Retina 15"
I took it in for service and they told me it needed a new logic board and replaced it.  When I asked why they were vague about the reasons, they said "it just needed one, it failed some test".  I now have the computer back and it runs the same way it always did.  I bought this laptop because it was supposedly capable of high end video editing in 1080P (or so Apple's website claims) and also photo editing.
"The processor, graphics, all-flash architecture, memory, and display in the 15-inch MacBook Pro give you unprecedented mobile video editing capabilities. Super-responsive flash storage delivers up to nine streams of 1080p ProRes (HQ) content for multicam editing in Final Cut Pro X,3 while the latest quad-core processors on the 15-inch MacBook Pro decode multiple streams of video, and a powerful GPU renders millions of pixels onto the screen. With flash storage that offers up to four times the performance of a traditional hard drive,1 you can even edit four streams of uncompressed 8-bit 1080p HD video, right from the internal storage on your 15-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display.4"
However, when I'm just browsing the web and emailing it runs quite warm and battery life is quite poor.  Sometimes doing those same activities I would say it gets so warm it's almost uncomfortable to have on your lap and the fans are running fast enough to become noticably noisy.  I'm also driving only one screen at and a time and I heard that the MacBook Pro can supposedly do three screens.
If actually try to do something like video editing with final cut pro the laptop gets really hot, the fans are on full blast and battery life drops to only an hour or two.  I think when I rendered just a 3 or 4 minute clip once I got less than hour of battery life.  I will have to time again.
Anyway most people (including the sales guys) are telling me no way this is not normal.  When I play with demos in the store browsing the web they are not getting warm or hot to the touch.  My friend's 2013 MacBook Air is also NOT getting warm to the touch doing the same activities.
I installed iStat Pro so I could check the temperature and fan speeds.  I'm seeing temperatures of 70+ on the GPU, 85+ on the GPU diode and 65+ on the CPU heatsink along with elvated fan speeds above 5K which becomes noticeably noisy.  I understand that might be normal for the most processor intensive tasks but it really doesn't seem right for just light web browsing and e-mailing.  (I also may have viber and skype open but that shouldn't matter).  CPU usage is usually running between 2-10% as this is all happening to.
    Furthermore, straight from the specs:
    Intel HD Graphics 4000
NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M with 1GB of GDDR5 memory and  automatic graphics switching
I am assume "GPU" and "GPU diode" are temp measurements on the discrenete NVIDIA video card, especially since MacBook Airs from the same and newer generatio do not have this reading.  Since Apple Claims the graphics "automatically switches" it seems all the harder to believe the GPU is reaching 85+ when in theory it shouldn't even be activated.  I mean, shouldn't the INtel HD Graphics 4000 be capable of simple web browsing and e-mailing?  Especially with only one screen activated (be it it the internal or an external)?
What should I do here?  When I asked the repair guys "OK well what is the normal operating temp range for the various sensors" they said "Sorry Apple doesn't provide that info".

    Yes I have.
Just web browsing and basically doing nothing I'm hear a lot of aduible fans, I'm getting 85C+ on GPU diode, 65+ on cpu heatsink.  I since installed anohter program that shows me not just the CPU heatsink but the cores and the cores are at 90C+.
Seems like a lot of heat for doing nothing.  Not only that but I have these problems with no external monitor while on battery power too.
I don't know what to do.  They already replaced the logic board.  Others seem to get advertised battery life out of Apple products and not have products that get **** near hot enough to burn you while just web browsing or watching a movie let alone advertised tasks like Photoshop and Final Cut Pro.

  • Why does iTunes Match cause iTunes to crash ?

Why does iTunes Match cause iTunes to crash ?

My problem is similar.  It began right after I allowed an Adobe update to run.  (Adobe Flash Player version 10.0.45.2 is recorded in my Registry.) Now every single website I try to open triggers a window (see below) and repeats many times.
It makes no difference whether I "Allow" or not.  I think it runs this window for every flash object on that website.  It is occurring while I enter this post!
It makes using the Internet MOST challenging.  Surely this is causing major problems for everyone.
I have IE8 on Windows Vista.
Here's the text from the message:
"A website wants to open web content using this program on your computer.

Should I appeal to Microsoft or Adobe for a solution?  Is is possible to install the previous version?

  • Which will cause a higher cpu load, the sampler instrument or the original audio tracks?

I have some piano that I wanted to loop. I had no problem using the convert track to sampler instrument.  My question is about CPU performance. Which will cause a higher cpu load, the sampler instrument or the original audio tracks?

    Hi Mesaboogiewes,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions
Ableton.com recommends disabling Energy Saver, fullscreen mode, and Exposé. I would recommend putting the 1Gb of RAM, you will find a better result. I suggest going to the Ableton.com website and looking for more troubleshooting issues.
    I hope that helps,

  • Flash causes very high CPU load (including high Xorg load)

    Hello everybody,
this is my first message. I'm an Arch user since a few months, and I'm pretty sure this is the distribution I'll stick to - I pratically love everything about it, especially its simpleness. It's the first Linux that doesn't scare me away with tons of configuration files scattered around dozens of different locations. I've already gotten quite a number of things fixed by myself without even looking at the forum or wiki.
Well, it seems most of these statements can be found in most first forum posts, so I'll stop to bore you...
The problem: Playing flash videos or animations causes incredible processor load: Even youtube takes a whole CPU core (or even a little more), top shows around 80% for Xorg and around 20-30% for Firefox (a little less with Opera). I'm on Arch64 with XFCE, Athlon X2 4600+, NVidia 8200 chipset (which has severe driver problems anyway; I'm using the latest NVidia beta driver). I'd try the open source nvidia driver, but (it seems that) there's no support for my chipset yet.
Currently I'm using Adobe's Flash64 alpha, before that I used various versions fo the nspluginwrapper. 32-bit Flash also caused high CPU load, but it wasn't that much and it may have been related to nspluginwrapper rather than anything else; however I have got the impression that things became even worse with the switch to the x64 alpha (performance-wise; on the other hand, it at least loads faster and doesn't crash anymore). Like said before, youtube takes one core, but it mostly works ok then, but videos with higher resolutions that youtube's are practically impossible to watch (except when there is very little movement in the film). Neither Flash hardware acceleration on nor off makes any difference.
I've already read half of the web, searched in forums, wikis, etc., but didn't find anybody with the same problem. When Flash64 was released and people were reporting good improvements, I was hoping it would be the same for me...
What I'm looking for is suggestions of things to try... I'm out of ideas what to try and where to look. It just seems strange that I seem to have problems that others don't...
Thanks for reading and for any comments.

  • VI causes high CPU load after several days of running

    Hello,
I have a strange problem. I have craeted a test bench control VI and it runs on five PCs, controling five test benches. All PCs have almost the same hardware, same motherboard, same CPU, etc.
Normaly the CPU load is around 50% when I run the VI, but at one PC the CPU load climbs up to 85% after several days (maybe one week) of continuous running and the PC is almost tied up - the VI execution becomes very slow (10 times slower) and the mouse only moves very slowly.
First I thought that the PC has a problem but the problem dissapears as soon as I stop and restart the VI!
I don't even have to terminate LabVIEW - only my VI and then everything is okay again.
The problem does not seem to occur at the other four PCs, but I can not tell for sure.
The task manager says only LabVIEW causes the CPU load - swap file utilisation is little.
Is there a way to analyze what causes the high CPU load?
    I Use LabVIEW 7.1 professional
Operating System: Win XP (SP 2 or 3 I don't remember)
    P.S. I have no loops without wait-functions.
    Greetings Johannes
Using LabVIEW 7.1 and 2009 recently

Do all PCs have the same amount of RAM?
What is the memory use over time as seen by the windows taks manager. Does it increase gradually?
An increase in resource usage if often cause by sloppy programming.
Do you grow arrays forever or constantly resize arrays in memory? (built array, insert into array, delete from array)
Do you often create new references and never close them?
What does the program actually do? In my opinion, a constant 50% CPU load seems too high for my taste. It means it would not even be able to keep up on slightly older hardware.

The problem does not occur immediately after restart, but you can already see the spikes of CPU load in the taskmanager with a peak of ~4%. After a couple of minutes this will go up to almost 50% utilizing a whole core and causing the hangs.

The Reset Firefox feature can fix many issues by restoring Firefox to its factory default state while saving your essential information.
Note: ''This will cause you to lose any Extensions, Open websites, and some Preferences.''
To Reset Firefox do the following:
#Go to Firefox > Help > Troubleshooting Information.
    #Click the "Reset Firefox" button.
#Firefox will close and reset. After Firefox is done, it will show a window with the information that is imported. Click Finish.
#Firefox will open with all factory defaults applied.

  • High CPU load and com.apple.ImageCaptureExtension2 crash after upgrade

After upgrading my Macbook Air from Lion to Mountain Lion, the system has a very high cpu load, and the crash reporter is the process that causes thee high load. In the error log I see this entry several times per second:
    17.08.12 12:58:46,011 ReportCrash[5998]: com.apple.message.domain: com.apple.crashreporter.writereport.crash
    com.apple.message.signature: Image Capture Extension
    com.apple.message.signature2: com.apple.ImageCaptureExtension2 ||| 8.0 (8.0)
    com.apple.message.signature3: 03A96CBDA3C85A114383537BFC5C8999
    com.apple.message.result: NO
    com.apple.message.summarize: YES
I investigated a bit more and recovered, that it has something to do with the printer drivers. When I remove all printers from setting, everything is fine. As soon as I add a printer (Brother MFC 9440CN printer/scanner, printer driver provided by Mountan Lion), the crash reporter starts it's work and the error log is full of those entries.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks in advance,
    Marcus

I did more exploration and found the cause of this, but I don't know how to fix it:
I removed all Brother and Lexmark printer drivers and rebooted (and also tested with a virtual machine using 10.8.0 as guest os that never had any printer installed). As soon as I enter the printer settings and press the "+", the crashes begin, so it looked like the bonjour one of the printers announcing themselves via Bonjour were causing this.
When watching a picture in the preview app the same happend. We have two multi function printers in our network, the already mentioned brother printer and a Lexmark X204N. Switching off the Lexmark (which wasn't installed on my Mac) solved the problem. Switching off the printer is no solution in our office (it's our fax device and main printer), but switching off mDNS on the Lexmark also solved it. But this can only be a workaround.
Is this a known problem with Lexmark devices and Mountain Lion (it works fine with machines using Lion)? Are there any fixes known? It's just the Lexmark device announing itself via Bonjour that causes trouble, even if the driver is not installed.
