ITunes match do I need wifi to listen

I just got iTunes Match and wondered the following.  Do I have to have a interenet connection to listen to my songs, if I have itunes match.  I am wondering what happens if I start iTunes match on my iPad and then go away from my wifi network, I did not buy the Cellular for it.
Thanks for any help
Ron

To expand on that answer a bit, the operation of Match on iOS devices is a little confusing.  In spite of what Apple says, they don't "stream" songs the way a computer does.  Rather, they download them and they remain on the device until space is needed.  This little cloud/arrow symbol remains, but the song is on the device (that's the confusing part).  So a lot of your music is already there and you'll be able to listen to it away from WiFi.
If you want to explicitely download songs to listen to offline, you can click the cloud arrow for individual songs, albums, artists, or playlists. The latter is a good way to download a lot of songs at once.  You can create a playlist on a matched computer, it will appear on your iPad and you can scroll to the bottom and click "Download all".
To see what's on your device, go to Settings->Music and set "Show all music" to OFF.

ive just subscribed to itunes match. do i need internet access to play tunes when not using my home broadband?

On an iOS device yes unless you pre-download the music. On your computer no, unless you decide to delete the tracks from your iTunes library. The latter is not recommended without having a full backup of your muaic files.

  • If i buy itunes match will i be able to listen to my music without data or internet for free?

i only have an 8 gb iphone 4 and i have over 1000 songs in my itunes library. if i subscribe itunes match will i be able to have all my songs on my phone and be able to listen to it all for free without using my data or internet?

    Hi,
You will need to use your data or internet when you are out and about. You will have access to all your nusic in the cloud but you will need to pre-download music whilst you have an internet connection.

  • Itunes match - do I need to keep my Itunes Library original files?

Can I delete my Itunes library on my hard drive if I subscribe to Itunes match? Would that be unwise?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
You can delete the music from your hard drive and you will be able to access to it from your iTunes Match. In that case, you will have to be connected to Internet in order to listen to your music but you will save storage on your hard disk. iTunes Match uploads your music to your iCloud, so you will be able to listen to the songs without having them saved on your hard drive

  • If I buy iTunes Match do I need to backup locally?

I am thinking of buying iTunes Match does this remove the need to back up music locally?

Apple does not gurantee that matched copies of your music will always be available in the cloud. The record lables can and do pull some music from the Apple store at any time.
I have had several album purchases go missing from the store over the years and to this day, they have not returned.  It's up to you if you want to take that chance but I have all my music on the cloud as well as on two computers as backup for this reason.

  • I recently downloaded a tv show and my iPod said that i need wifi to watch it. How do i download a video from iTunes so I dont need wifi?

I recently downloaded a tv show from itunes and my ipd said that i need wifi to watch it. How do i download it so i can watch it with out wifi?

I think the issue may be that these TV shows are in HD. Would that keep them from playing?
Yes.  Sounds like you are trying to sync the HD version of the TV Episode.  You should try to download the Standard Definition copy instead and sync that to your device as HD content is not compatible with the Nano.  See here for more information:
iTunes: May be unable to transfer videos to iPhone, iPad, or iPod
To prevent HD versions from being downloaded in the future head to the iTunes Store, click the Purchased link, and then select TV Shows and remove the tick mark next to Download HD when available.  You should be able to download the SD version now from under this same page.

  • Can my wife access my iTunes match on her computer

I have an iTunes match account. My wife would like To access my music on her account. Can she do that while signing on to her own iTunes account? Or does she instead need to sign on to my iTunes account (which seems a bit cumbersome)?

She will need to sign in using your iTunes Store account ID. iTunes Match can't be shared among accounts. Keep in mind that any iOS devices can only be signed into different iTune store account IDs once every 90 days.

  • Itunes match, is it worth it?

    Hi all.
I am considering trying itunes match. I just wondered if anyone uses it. What do they think of it? What does it do?
I am considering joining up but I am not sure and really would like some info from someone who has or is using it.
    Thanks.

I love it, other people hate it. It depends on what you need, and how well iTunes Match meets your needs.
It allows you to listen to your music on your phone or another computer - without syncing - as long as you have a wifi connection (or, if you choose, by cellular but that will use up some of your data plan). When you don't have a network connection, you can still listed to some music, as long as it was recently played on your phone or you manually downloaded it from the cloud.
Most of the people who I've run into who really hated iTunes Match had problems with it because they wanted to maintain some control (or more control) over exactly what songs were on their phone. But iTunes Match is meant to work without syncing - so you lose some control. And it's not perfect, so some people complain because the matching doesn't match in cases when they think it should, or it gets the "clean" version of a song instead of the "explicit", or because a playlist doesn't sync perfectly (iTunes 11 may fix some of these problems - especially the playlist syncing, but I haven't had a chance to verify anything yet). A few people experience crashes or never-ending-matching, usually caused by a particular song that it chokes on, but it can be really tough to figure out which song it's choking on so they never get past that stage.
It's also definitely not a replacement for Pandora or Last.fm, or other streaming services. This is for listening to music that you already own, with the expectation that you will keep your original files on at least one of your computers.
If you have $25 to spare, it's definitely worth trying out for a year. If you don't like it, turn it off and cancel the renewal, no harm done except for losing $25.

  • How to access iTunes Match tunes behind firewall?

    Hello,
I have successfully enabled iTunes Match and can access my music from my iPhone and iPad from my home network.  However, when I try to access music from my iPhone at work, nothing is downloaded from the cloud.  I strongly suspect that this is due to the relevant IP port being blocked on the company firewall.
Can anyone advise which port(s) and protocols are used by iTunes Match to download music from the cloud onto the device (plus any other ports used in negotiating the transfer, etc)?  I need to know this information in order to request that the relevant ports are opened.
    Many thanks,
    Paul

Well, Apple does normally publish this kind of information - see this help article.  It's a shame they haven't updated it with the information I need!  Sadly, I doubt my IT folks will have the time to research the ports I need - it'll be hard enough persuading them to open up the ports, let alone find them too!
If anyone from Apple is reading this, it would be most useful if you can provide the port information needed to allow iTunes Match to work over wifi behind a firewall!

  • After upgrading to iTunes Match Genius Icon Gone on iPhone

After upgrading to iTunes Match Genius Icon Gone on iPhone
So I upgrade and uploaded/matched all my songs to iTunes Match. Everything seems to be fine, except I noticed I don't have the genius functionality on my iPhone. Basically the little atom icon is missing. Does anyone have a solution for this problem.
    Thanks
    Chike

This is what works for me.
I do this once: I keep quite a bit of music loaded on my iPhone using the normal sync process with my Mac (via USB cable) prior to turning on iTunes Match (...let's me listen to at least some music even when disconnected from the net, like when on a plane).  And then I turn iTunes Match back on (and leave it turned on) and it gives me access to the rest of my music library from iCloud when I have network access (3G or Wifi) for normal listening using my whole library over Match.
I start playing a song on my iPhone (one that doesn't have the iCloud icon)
I click the home button (physical button on iPhone that closes the Music app)
I then double click the home button (opens the task manager at the bottom)
Quit Music (press/hold on the Music icon in the tray until the little red circle with an x appears to quit the app)
Then restart Music (tap the Music icon on my iPhone home screeen)
When the Music app restarts, it opens to the last song playing.  if it was one of the songs downloded to my iPhone, it has the litlle atomic symbol again and I can create a genius playlist from it.
FYI: you can enable/disable iTunes Match on the iPhone without affecting songs loaded on your iPhone (even though it says it'll replace your iPhone library, the songs are still there if you enable/disable again).  Settings>>>Music>>>iTunes Match on/off.

  • ITunes match wont let me play my songs

I have iTunes match, so i am able to listen to all my music, where ever i am, on any device, without it taking up disk space.
That´s all fine and dandy...BUT every time i launch iTunes on my work computer (macbook pro retina, with mavericks, logged in to my Apple ID), all my songs a grayed out, and i am unable to play any songs. the only thing thats running is the little cloud icon next to "Music" in the sidebar.
The only thing that gets it going agine is when i turn off iTunes match, and then back on again. When i do this, everything works just fine.
This is beginning to be extremely annoying, can anybody help?

  • HT4913 If the music library on my iPhone will be deleted when I enable iTunes Match, does that mean that I will not be able to access that music library when I temporarily turn off iTunes Match on the iPhone, e.g., when on the subway & can't connect to Ma

I have subscribed to iTunes Match and have employed it to listen to music on my Macbook Air and iMac.  On these devices it seems to operate by streaming music to the device rather than deleting the device's current iTunes library and downloading songs as they are played from iTunes Match. Not so on the iPhone as far as I can tell. Consequently, to date I have not activated iTunes Match on my iPhone 4S.  I presently have 40-50GB's of music on my iPhone, sync'd from my iTunes music library on my Macbook Air.  I am concerned that if I enable iTunes Match on my iPhone I will lose the music library already on my iPhone, as Apple seems to be representing that once iTunes Match is enabled on the iPhone the current music library, carefully compiled, will be gone from the iPhone forever (unless I later re-sync it from the iTunes library on my laptop), that it will be deleted.  Although this would free up a lot of space on my iPhone, I bought the 64GB phone just so that I could keep a lot of music on it and accessible at all times.  I am concerned that in certain instances, say if I am in the subway and want to listen to music on my iPhone but  don't have internet access below ground, that I won't have much music to listen to, only those songs previously played and thus downloaded onto the phone from iMatch, presenting me witrh a rather limited choice of music to play instead of the 40-50GB's I now have to choose from. Apple seems to have presented me with the choice of the lesser of 2 evils: i) enable iTunes Match and lose the music library already on the iPhone in exchange for access to iTunes Match and a greater number of songs than I can fit onto the phone (my library exceeds the phone's capacity) when a Cloud connection is available or ii) don't enable iTunes match and limit myself to only those songs, a considerable portion of my library to be sure but not all of it, that I can fit in the phone's storage space, i.e., the 40-50 GB's I have on there now.  If I choose the latter course, each time I purchase an album I'll have to delete another album to make room for it on the phone.  Apple thus offers me a sort of Hobson's choice, bad all the way around.  Do I have this right? The Apple techs I've spoken to don't seem to have a handle on the "deletion" aspect of enabling iTunes Match on the iPhone.   Right now, I'm too scared of "losing" my iPhone music library to enable iTunes Match on the iPhone. [Possible work-around, albeit a pain in the ***: I suppose that I can enable iTunes Match on the iPhone and spend the next couple of weeks 24/7 downloading songs from my iTunes Match library back onto the phone to replace at least some of those deleted when Match was enabled, thereby rebuilding a proxy library on the phone itself to play when I'm stuck in a tunnel between Brooklyn and Manhattan while maintaining access to thee larger iTunes Match library, more music than my phone will hold, once we come back into the light and my Cloud connection is restored.] Comments, suggestions will be appreciated. Thank you.

  • HT204406 Hi! i purchased itunes match a while ago and everything was going fine until i found out that my girlfriend had signed intp her itunes on my mac account. now when i try to turn itunes match on it says This computer is already associated with an A

    anyone any ideas?

I'm having the exact same problem and I am the only person who has ever been logged on to this computer to use iTunes Match.  Only my wife also uses this computer, and she has never used or signed up for Match.
Interestingly, I have the same number of days listed on my error, 82 days.
Obviously, Apple has screwed up somewhere.  I've put a help request in.  If we cannot find a solution, we'll have to let everybody know that Match is a ripoff and that all should avoid this fraud like the plague...
    Shalom, y'all!

  • I can't connect to iTunes Match for 90 DAYS?!

    What the F??
I only have Match on one account...  Yesterday I forgot my password, and was reminded that I have an old account from YEARS ago. They both share the same email account and password. The account I use right now's account name is the email address. They even have the same password and contact information... I logged into that account so I could download whatever songs weren't in my iTunes library at the moment, got my 6 (Only 6!!) songs, and then logged back into current my account. I authorized my account to play the old account's songs, and tried to get them to go through iTunes Match, but the option to "Send to iTunes Match" was gone... so I turned it on, and now I get this error:
"This computer is already associated with an Apple ID.
You can use iTunes Match on this computer with just one Apple ID every 90 days. You cannot associate this computer with a different Apple ID for 90 days."
What the F?? The only computer that has iTunes Match IS this computer! This is even the EXACT SAME computer I used with my old account! How does this make any sense?! If I didn't have an essay due today I would call them right now. This just makes zero sense at all. How can I be locked out of iTunes Match through the computer/account that PURCHASED it?!

So... I'm trying to install OSX Lion and see if that will count as a "new computer". [I have Snow Leopard right now] If I have to I guess I'll try a clean install after that too... Or, does anybody know if I should go straight for a clean install first, and then transfer my files afterwards?
I think the worst part of all this is that the other iTunes account tells me to "Purchase iTunes match" if I switch to it. I was hoping I could at least use that account for 90 days and then switch back, but it won't even let the computer/account that I supposedly "switched" to use iTunes Match without buying it again... That also makes no sense to me. If the account I switched to hasn't even purchased iTunes Match, then how could I have switched to using that library? o.O
All of my music is on an external. There's really no difference between me borrowing a friend's laptop, changing the settings, connecting to the external, and then turning on iTunes Match when I need to (plus, my friend would get a ton of free music in the process if they want to keep them). How exactly does this help Apple? O.o
I'll update if installing OSX Lion helps at all...
