ITunes Match - Greyed out songs when iTunes restarted

I am using iTunes 12 (latest version) on a Macbook 2010 running Yosemite 10.10.1
I do not store any music locally, and access around 2000 songs in iTunes Match. When I turn on iTunes Match, all songs display fine in iTunes.
The problem - When I quit iTunes and relaunch it, the songs are all there, however they are Greyed out and do not respond to any clicking or playing. This results in having to turn off and on iTunes Match every time I open iTunes, extremely annoying.
Can anyone help?
Thanks

Hopefully when you deleted them locally, you did not check the "delete also from iTunes Match."  That said, while I don't right-click, I do believe that if the item is grayed out, and it has a cloud icon next to it with an arrow, it's telling you that it's available for download.  If that's what you're seeing, then just click on the cloud icon to download.

why is there not a fix in the next update
Really how do i know what community to post on
Help, i just want to listen to some of my favourite songs

    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Unsync all music and resync
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup. See:

  • Problem syncing and greyed out songs on iTunes

I just recently switched from an iPhone 3gs to an iPhone 5. Before switching phones, I went on iTunes and clicked "back up" in case I wanted to transfer music, photos, etc. After switching, I decided to add new music onto my new iPhone. I don't use iTunes very much, so while trying to figure out how to put music onto my phone, I clicked "restore from backup." I was afraid some of my new apps would disappear, so I clicked cancel. I checked my phone and the only difference I saw was that I got my old bookmarks back from my old iPhone.
I went back to syncing my new music and figured it out, however, I noticed that every time I clicked "sync", it would sync for a little while, stop at "step 2: backing up" and then cancel. I think cancelling the "restore from backup" interrupted the syncing process for my music because now, some of the songs are greyed out on iTunes, but they still show up on my iPhone. I'm happy the music still plays on my iPhone, but it bothers me that I can't get rid of the greyed out songs on iTunes.
Can someone please tell me how to fix the greyed out songs and how to stop my phone from syncing and canceling?
    P.S.
My iPhone would sync and then cancel every time I plug in my iPhone into my computer, but I stopped that by going on iTunes to "Edit", "Preferences", "Devices", and then checkmarking the box that says "Prevent iPods, iPhones, iPads from syncing automatically."
I hope all of this makes sense >.< I feel like I should be jumping up and down in joy for getting an upgrade, but I'm bummed out now that this has to happen :/

I'm sorry I don't have a solution to post, but just want to say that I too (and I'm sure, among millions of others)  have experienced nothing but frustration and anger at all the ridiculous bugs that have happened seemingly without any interference from the user's end.
I can't even begin to list all the problems I've had since being forced to upgrade to iOS 7 on my iPhone(s) and iPad(s) being a family of Apple users. The OS "Music" app is completely useless now (half of my 1,200 songs are "greyed out" and unplayable), iTunes doesn't sync properly (it absonlutely refuses to transfer songs no matter how many options and selections in the various panes are checked off) and everything is INCREDIBLY slow.
I've read SO many possible solutions and fixes and, really, I don't have the TIME to be reading endless posts and screwing around "experimenting" trying to get it fixed. And Apple, as usual, is mum and nowhere to be found.
My advice to tech companies is to LEAVE THINGS BE -- especially if there is no real improvement. Unless the change significantly improves the functionality—changing the interface, buttons, or even the icons JUST BECAUSE is stupid policy and infuriates those of us whose lives don't live and breathe Apple...and just want a functioning phone.

  • Get rid of greyed out songs on iTunes on the PC

It happens on my Windows desktop where I go on "My Device" on iTunes where it was 3 greyed out songs with the dotted circle. Whenever I try deleting them and then sync my phone, they reappear. It's very frustrating. Can anyone help me how to stop this?

When the media on the device won't update as expected during a sync the method that usually works is this:
Export the contents of the camera roll. (You should do this routinely anyway.)
Backup the device, unless you have a recent backup that you would prefer to restore.
Restore as a new device. (The general restore process doesn't seem to clear things out before reloading, so there can be issues with missing artwork or incorrect capacity calculations.)
    Restore the chosen backup.
In some cases it might pay to use the recovery mode method given in HT201263: If you can't update or restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch at step 3 to ensure that a device has been completely reset before reloading your content.

  • Greyed out songs on iTunes won't show up on iPod?

Okay, so I imported a CD to iTunes and it worked perfectly. I hooked up my iPod and dragged the CD over to sync. The top of the iTunes window said "preparing to update items on Em's iPod". When it was finished, I unhooked my iPod touch and opened up my music app to check if the album was there and it wasn't. This hadn't happened before with the other CD's I had, so I looked at the music section of my iPod on iTunes and saw that some songs were greyed out and had a sync symbol next to it. Nothing was syncing at the time however. How did this happen?

What exactly happens when you try to redownload them by:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
    Next:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Go to Settings>iTunes and Ap stores and sign out and sign back in
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.

  • Greyed out songs in iTunes library!!

Hi all can anyone help me out with this? My music files are all mp4, the original file has not been moved, music was on my phone for months and worked fine and then i noticed over half of my playlist were missing. I looked on iTunes library on my mac and they were grey? I have tried re-adding the song into the library but now it won't accept them? I am unsure as to why this has happened. It also happens to my movie library aswell? every now and then a movie that is in the list turns grey for no reason then i have to re-add it back on again and then delete the grey copy? So frustrating and very annoying! Can anyone help me please? Thanks

I know this is probably to late, When I had grayed out songs on my Iphone 5 this is how i got rid of them.
Had my Iphone plugged into my laptop, opened Itunes, Clicked my iphone tab on itunes then clicked Music.
When your music from your iphone appear navigate to the songs that are grayed out, right click and choose Delete.
    This worked for me.

  • ITunes match grays out songs

I have had iTunes Match for about two weeks and still have not managed to get it to work properly. I have been on these forums searching for the answer, as well as other websites, and absolutely cannot figure out what the problem is. It's very frustrating because this program was supposed to make things simpler, not more difficult. Please, if you can help, leave a suggestion for me here.
    Here is the situation:
    - iTunes Match has successfully put about 8000 songs in the iCloud and those work well on all devices.
    - BUT it is missing about 2000 songs, which are either ineligable (which that part is okay and I understand), or are grayed out. These grayed out songs cannot be played, uploaded, downloaded, or anything. I have no idea why this is happening, but it has stopped a significant portion of my music library from being accessible. Anywhere. These grayed out songs are gray on all devices.
    - iTunes Match also deleted many songs from the playlists that it was supposed to be saving. I do have a backup (I am pretty sure...) of my iTunes library before doing iTunes Match, so if I have to I can hopefully recover the lost songs that way. I think they are still in my library and have just been removed from my playlists, but I don't know if they are the grayed out songs or the okay songs.
Since having these problems, iTunes Match has been turned off on every device except the main desktop iMac that the actual song files are on. I am wondering if the problem may have occurred when I first set it up, as my family got excited and we tried to start every device on Match at the same time. If that isn't the problem then I have no idea. Either way, I don't know how to solve it.
In trying to trouble shoot, I have done just about everything that I or the Internet could think of. Please feel free to leave a suggestion. Anything may help, it's just that nothing has yet. Thanks in advance!

    Hi,
No you can't decide what tracks go into cloud. If the track is eligible. it will either be matched or uploaded. However, you can work around this by changing the media type to something other than music e.g. Podcast or Audiobook. Both are ineligible for match. You can't change media type when match is on.
Another option is to open an new library and then turn on match. You will see all the music you have in the cloud. You can delete tracks from the cloud and when you go back to the original library, the tracks will still be there but the iCloud status will be shown as "Remove". This essentially will now be a local file and match will ignore for future scans.

  • Greyed out songs when tried to sync songs to iphone

    I just tried to sync an album from my iTunes library to my phone. But when I choose the "on this phone" option, the songs on that album are greyed out. They won't go to my phone at all, I have no clue why. .-. It also says that with several other of my songs too, it's been doing this a lot lately.. ;-;
Thanks for reading, hope this was somewhat easy to understand, all help is appreciated

I am having the same problem. I have just tried this. Unplug iphone > open itunes > delete all music from itunes library > close itunes > re-open itunes > add music from original folder > plug in iphone > select songs > press sync > unplug iphone using eject button onscreen > checked phone .... still nothing in music folder on phone. On itunes the "On this iphone" tab the songs remain there but greyed out.

  • Greyed out songs only are displayed when iPhone is connected to iTunes? How do I fix?

I've googled everything available on the internet to fix this problem, nothing works. Deleted itunes library files, deleted itunes_control folder on iphone using iExplorer, tried manually removing greyed out songs... but they come back everytime. It's only songs that iv'e downloaded for free from itunes. I have not one single song in my itunes library and nothing in the cloud either. 15 songs are hidden, but apparently they always like to show up on my iphone as greyed out, only when connected to itunes. Nothing i displayed on my phone it's while using it. Very frustrated. Pls Help.

    Hello daddyleon75,
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
For more information, take a look at:
iOS: Forgotten passcode or device disabled after entering wrong passcode
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1212
Alternatively, place the device in recovery mode and restore it to erase the device:
Disconnect the USB cable from the device, but leave the other end of the cable connected to your computer's USB port.
Turn off the device: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the red slider appears, then slide the slider. Wait for the device to shut down.
While pressing and holding the Home button, reconnect the USB cable to the device. The device should turn on.
Continue holding the Home button until you see the Connect to iTunes screen.
iTunes will alert you that it has detected a device in recovery mode. Click OK, and then restore the device.
    Have a nice day,

  • Greyed out songs on iPhone and not visible at all in iTunes

I have recently had to replace my iphone due to the microphone breaking, when restoring my new iphone and attempting to transfer all my music onto it, I noticed it asking me to sign in to the apple store with an email address I have never used or recognised.
The majority of my music is not sourced from itunes and I now realise that in my collection I have a few music files that were originally bought and connected to somebody elses apple ID. It is asking me to sign in to these ID's when trying to sync the songs, the problem being they are not my apple ID's and I don't know the passwords so it is impossible. So the songs appear greyed out on my iphone (un playable, can't edit/delete etc) and don't appear in the music tab of my iphone at all in itunes.
At the same time of my iphone replacement I have also bought a macbook air. To fix the above problem I thought I would be able to start fresh with a brand new itunes library on my macbook. I ripped a few cd's and started a new library, (it warned me that I would have to erase the current library and start again + authorize the macbook) but the greyed out songs still appear and every time i sync my iphone it asks me to sign in to the other apple ID's connected with the individual songs.
How do I remove these files completely?
    Thanks for your help.

I did not do any updates on my iphone 4.  Lo and behold, suddenly these circles with dots appeared next to some songs on the ipod.  The ipod would speed scroll through them, and then grey them out.  Like for you, I could not play them anymore.  So I deleted all the songs on the ipod, and reloaded them from my iTunes.  Now, the greyed songs are all visible, with duplicate new loads in black.  What the h**k is this?  How do I get rid of all the songs that have been deleted but still are all listed in grey?

  • Syncing music on 4s and ITunes - Greyed out songs

For some reason, when I sync my iphone to itunes on my Macbook Pro, there are a group of about 30 songs that keep reappearing greyed out on the ITunes screen on the computer.
I've deleted these songs from the phone, I've deleted any pending downloads on the phone. I can delete all of the music out of the phone itself and out of the Iphone music screen in ITunes while it's connected, and sync them and they disappear. But the second I unplug it and plug it back in, they show up greyed out again in the music window for the iphone in Itunes on my macbook.
    Any suggestions? It's extrememly annoying.

Did you try transferring purchased items to your computer? Take a look at his link, http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1848

  • IPod Nano Grey Out Problem in iTunes??

I purchased my iPod Shuffle last year. I installed iTunes in my Window PC and purchased music via the music store.
A month ago, I purchased a iPod Nano, I added the iPod Nano to iTunes. iTunes will update my iPod Nano automatically when I connect it to my computer.
However, all the songs in my iPod Nano menu in iTunes appear 'grey out'. I can't do anything like delete, play them etc??
Can anybody advise me how to solve this 'grey out' problem?
    Thanks,
    Jacky

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
If you update automatically, the songs are grayed out, because the songs should be on your computer.
To delete songs, you can uncheck the songs/podcasts you don't want on your iPod in iTunes. Then connect your iPod to the computer. When it appears in iTunes, go to edit-->preferences. Click the iPod tab, then the music tab under that. Check "Only Update Checked Songs" and click OK. Only checked songs will be put onto the iPod.
    See this for more ideas/tips...
Deleting songs or playlists from your iPod
To be able to play songs on the iPod through the computer, delete songs only on the iPod (without having to check and uncheck), and to have songs not grayed out, you would have to manually update. Songs would no longer automatically update onto the iPod. You would have to drag new songs that you want on your iPod onto it (through iTunes)...

  • HT4914 iTunes Match, find lost songs

I've lost my songs that I bought in iTunes on my iPhone, will iTunes Match help me get them back?

I guess the iTunes store is not recognizing your computer. Did you de-authorise your computer after you uploaded to iTunes Match. Did you register your new computer with a different User ID? Do you have Genius turned on (which needs to be on as it works in conjunction with iTunes Match. Did you authorise your new computer?
You paid for ITunes match & uploaded your songs using a different computer. So there are obviously one or more steps which need to be taken to download your media from the iCloud. Either someone else with more expertise than I can help you, for example, Limnos Limnos ; or King_Penguin King_Penguin or Chris_CA https://discussions.apple.com/people/Chris%20CA would probably be able to help you better than I.
    I don't work for Apple, I'm only a volunteer, if you can't get help from someone as mentioned above there's always Kappy (who is extremely busy) Kappy ;
then I would recommend going through the tried and true channel here > http://www.apple.com/support/contact/
Sorry I couldn't solve your problem myself. I'm about ready to retire from this game.
    Peace Out.

  • HT204406 Started iTunes Match and the songs are individually available but none of my playlists are on my apple tv yet looking at the playlists from my iTunes on my mac there looks to me no issues

Started iTunes Match and the songs are individually available  on my apple TV, and there is a tab for playlists. Yet the only playlists available are the Preset itunes generated 4: 90's music, Classical Music videos, and Recently Added. Yet even the recently Added playlist does not contain my most recelty added music purchased form iTunes and shows that is in the Cloud. None of my other playlists are on my apple tv yet looking at the playlists from my iTunes on my mac, there looks to be no issues relating to them and the cloud. Even tried making a new playlist. It made no difference. It would be nice to figure out how to have my music available on my TV without having to open up my computer everytime. Yes I know I can use my cell phone but, I'd like to put my photos to music and to set that up I need the Itunes Match playlists to WORK

Hi I had exactly the same problem, I don't know if you setup your Apple TV before you subscribed to iTunes I match? If you did then I did the same and although all my songs showed up on my Apple TV none of my playlist did.
This is how I fixed it I went into settings on the Apple TV menu and reset the device back to factory default, I then setup the unit again adding in my iTunes username and password etc, ticked the bix that says turn on I match and then went into music
It took a few moments but it said updating once this finished I checked playlists and all my playlists as per my desktop PC were showing up!
I hope this Helios resolve your problem too :)
