ITunes messed up my library...what happened?

Ok so I finally downloaded the newest version of iTunes the other day. Here's the problem...after it went thru the whole installation process and re-launched, my library was messed up because somehow everything got auto-tagged and most of it is wrong. Some of my albums have been duplicated and half of my songs are in one album and the other half are in the other. If you right click on one of the albums and choose "Get Info," all of the info for both albums is the same...its just that some of the ID tags were modified (capital letters, track numbers, etc.). A lot of artist names have been replaced with "Various," "Soundtrack," "Unknown Artist," and some are even in foreign languages. Does anyone know how to fix this? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance....

kind of the same problem. A song from an album apeared faaaaar from the rest of the songs, and I've come to a pretty dumb issue:
When I order "Album by Artist" the songs of the multiple disc albums mix up. i.e.:
any two disc album: shows the track 1 of both discs together, then track 2 for both discs, etc. etc.
Was not like this in the previous versions of iTunes (and I've been using iTunes for like 3 years, gettin' VERY update.
This, plus the registry error on some windows plataforms, calls for a *MOST URGENT PATCH UPDATE!!!*
got a really fast "kind of" response.
9.0.1 update says that some scrambling issues has been solved. Downloading right now,... we'll see.

Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps you shouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping. In the Previous iTunes Libraries folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename iTunes Library.itl as iTunes Library (Corrupt).itl and then rename the restored file as iTunes Library.itl. Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.
See iTunes Folder Watch for a tool to catch up with any changes since the backup file was created.
When you get it all working make a backup!

  • Closing One iTunes Account to Use Another, What Happens Next?

    Hey,
I recently setup a .Mac Account for my iWeb, and now want to use the same username for my iTunes, instead of a hotmail.com Apple ID (aID).
I contacted Apple and they said that I can't merge the two accounts.
In my Hotmail aID Account I still have come credit on the count, $24.00 approx.
    Now here's a solution I thought.
If I GIFT a television show to myself at my new .Mac aID - it will use the credit in my account...
Now I have a couple of questions:
    1) Who's account name will appear on the gifted television show? My new or old ID?
    2) What happens to all the other content that I have purchased with my old account? Will I still be able to play these?
Can anyone see any problems in this solution.... its the only way I can think of getting around the merge... I want to stop my Hotmail aID and use my new .Mac aID.
THANKS for any advice and help.

I have a similar issue. I would like to change an existing Apple ID to a MobileMe address. However, since an Apple ID is automatically created when you sign up for MobileMe, I was not allowed to change my existing Apple ID to the new MobileMe e-mail address. It does not make since that this is not possible, especially since both are Apple products and MobileMe is a paid service. This is a hassle when making iTunes purchases as I will have to maintain login info and authorizations for both my old Apple ID and the new MobileMe created Apple ID. Is it possible to close an Apple ID account. If so, I could close the MobileMe created Apple ID and then change the e-mail address on the old Apple ID to the new MobileMe address. Sounds kinda confusing. If this is possible, how do you do it? Thanks in advance.

  • Reinstall of itunes messed up my library.

I was in the middle of updating my itunes when my computer restarted and now my library is not fully there. I am missing music and videos. Is there anyway to fix this?

Hi I wasn't around yesterday evening.
The reason I was thinking about moving stuff out of your current iTunes was to avoid lots of duplicates when you load up from your iPod, but I didn't want you to delete it.
You really ought to have a backup system in case of disaster, especially as this is your work. For that the best thing is an external HDD if you can afford it. It's probably tax deductible.
That way you can make sure you can always recover from disaster quickly. As an aside this is an article about backing up.

How do you feel about that? If you get an external drive you could just move you iTunes folder out to the external drive and start afresh on the PC.
If not, if I understand you correctly you have a 20GB iPod, do you have 20 GB free on your disk with some extra to spare?
If you look in My Music you should have an iTunes folder and in that will be a folder called iTunes Music, is that where your music is?
Anyway what I suggest you do is to close iTunes then rename the iTunes folder – maybe call it iTunesOld. This will be your old version of iTunes with the incomplete library and will be a backup for the time being.
Now if you start iTunes is will create a new iTunes folder with an empty library and iTunes Music folder.
Now use one of the methods from the Zevoneer link to recover your music back from your iPod into this new empty iTunes library.
I would suggest you use one of the commercial programs such as Copypod as they will be easier for an inexperienced user. I haven’t used it myself, but Copypod looks easy to use. I did have a look at Yamipod, but it gave a worrying message about not working properly with an iPod synced with my version of iTunes so I closed it without doing anything. • HT4914 vinyl recordings in my i tunes library what happens

vinyl recordings in my i tunes library what happens

    Hello darlosboy,
Here is a brief description of how the songs will be Matched with iTunes Match that were imported to your iTunes library.
    How iTunes Match works.
iTunes determines which songs in your collection are available in the iTunes Store. Any music with a match is automatically added to iCloud for you to listen to anytime, on any device. Since there are more than 26 million songs in the iTunes Store, chances are your music is already in iCloud.3And for the few songs that aren’t, iTunes uploads what it can’t match (which is much faster than uploading your entire music library).

  • Major disaster - upgrade of iTunes messed up my library

I live and die by my iPod, I am a dance teacher and cannot function without it.
I was prompted to upgrade my version of iTunes in order to download from the music store yesterday. Once I had upgraded the software, literally hundreds of songs in my library displayed the ! symbol and their files cannot be found. I really don't have hours to spend re-loading the hundreds of CD's that appear to be missing. Literally whole albums are either showing ! or do not even appear in my library at all.
Please help, I won't sync my iPod until i have fixed the issue but am really annoyed about the problem. Will the music still be stored in my previous iTunes library files, and if so can someone give me dummy steps to restore a) my library and b) my sanity!
    Thanks

  • HT1923 iTunes Library - What happens upon uninstall?

When I uninstall iTunes, does my iTunes Library file stay on my hard drive?  and then when I reinstall, is it still there with all my songs?

Under normal circumstances, an uninstall/reinstall doesn't touch your content. (That being said, it's still always a good idea to maintain a current backup at all times in case of disasters of any sort.)

  • New iTunes messed up my library.

My library was very nicely organized by "Album Artist", and albums of the same artist were grouped together. Now it is a total mess and I cannot change "Album Artist" tag. Help!

Perhaps try Chargedneuron's suggestion with that:
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=12758546#12758546
But if no joy there, and if you aren't using iTunes 10.1.1.4 yet, try updating to that. (The Mac release notes say a problem with similar symptoms to yours was fixed in the 10.1.1.4 version.)

  • Missing iPhone backup in iTunes from iOS5 update. What happens to the backup files from the update process?

My PC had a BSOD while restoring my data.  After I restarted, opened iTunes, and connected my phone, the restore did not resume. (I have seen the restore process resume after an interruption.)  I tried to manually restore the data, but iTunes does not list the backup that was taken during the update process.  Is this backup stored in a different location or format?  Is there a way I can get my data back?  I tried an extraction tool from the web and it didn't detect the backup from the update.

Same with me; I only found one backup dating back from august; tried that and works fine. But missing all my pics/vids in between. I have been searching my pc for files that were created on the day of the OS upgrade, but could not figure out any backups...
    Any help?

  • Trying to use the plug in to switch from iPhoto to lightroom but all I get is a window that says "checking iPhoto library" Whats happening?

rying to use the plug in to switch from iPhoto to lightroom

    1. Back up your Library now. You don't use iPhoto to back it up, you can do it simply by dragging the iPhoto Library from the Pictures Folder to the External Disk
    2.
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .
