Itunes migration to new mac

New to the apple world. I migrated the itunes Music Folder from my wife's macbook to mine -  using Migration assistant - do I need to aim iTunes at the folder to import - or is iTunes way more clever than I , and just do this for me.
Thanks for your patience!

Just launch iTunes. No need to point anything anywhere (besides, you'll put someone's eye out with that thing!)
That's what Migration Assistant does. It copies your account to the new computer.
Everything should be set up exactly as it was.

  • ITunes Migration To New Mac - Want To Retain Library, Playlists And Ratings

    Hi there,
I'm considering upgrading my 20" Imac to the 24" version and have a few queries with Itunes. Basically i manage my library and songs myself so to speak so i don't keep any of my music within the Itunes music folder. Anything i've ever added or imported has been filed in my own folders relating to genre on my hard drive. I've been in this situation previously when i last upgraded and i didn't have the option to do a migration as my old operating system was Tiger and new one Leopard. So i basically printed out all my playlists, added all my music to the library again and manually re-entered all the playlists.
Would a migration take care of this for me or would i encounter problems? Some people say it's not wise to do a migration with a new out of box Mac as you end up carrying over crap you don't need.
Can someone advise me what is the best route to take, i know the typical answer is to just copy the entire Itunes folder out of music and place it in the same destination on the new machine but i don't think this will work due to me using Itunes as a referenced library.

    Hi ya Bert;
This is too easy. Steps are quick and here they are:
One item extra you need: 1 6-foot long firewire cable (FW400 6 pin type)
This is under the expectation that your different music genres folders are located in your Music folder.
    1. Make sure both iMacs are shut down.
    2. Connect firewire cable to both iMacs.
    3. Start your 20 inch iMac normally and let it come to the desktop.
    4. Start your 24 inch iMac, BUT press the 'T' key and wait until the firewire symbol is displayed on
your 24 inch iMac then release.
    5. You'll see your 24 inch iMac's hard drive show up in your 20 inch iMac's desktop.
    6. Open the Macintosh HD of your 20 inch iMac, then open the Music folder and stop.
    7. Open the yellow Macintosh HD (which is the 24 inch iMac's HD), then navigate to the Music folder
    and stop.
    8. Drag the music genre folders in the Music folder from your 20 inch iMac and drop it into the
Music folder of your 24 inch iMac.
    9. You'll see a copy progress bar displayed and after some time, it will disappear.
    10. After the file transfer is completed, eject the Macintosh HD of your 24 inch iMac from the 20
inch iMac and power down the 24 inch iMac.
    11. You can safely disconnect the firewire cable to both iMacs.
If I read your message right, your playlists are not part of the iTunes library.
If you are having any problems with these instructions, please give a more detailed picture of your library setup.
    Take care.

  • Migrate Apple Mail and iTunes to a new Mac

A friend df mine has a macBook Pro 2009 and now has bought a MacBook Por Retina.
As the old AMcBook pro is full of problems on system level I offered to help him with th emigration of some of his old data to the new machine. iPhoto data is no problems as I know which files to copy but hesitate on Apple Mail and iTunes.
I read this extensive manual http://macs.about.com/od/usingyourmac/ss/moving-apple-mail_4.htm#step-heading but it tells me also to copy the old keychain data, which is corrupt and even Key Chain First iAd can't solve.
Is it possible yo only copy Username/Library/Mail and the com.apple.mail.plist file in Username/LibraryPreferences ?
On iTunes I have want to follow theses steps to have his iPad and iPhone sync on the new Mac
    1) Make sure that iTunes is not running on both Macs.
    2) Disconnect your iPhone/iPod from both Macs.
    3) Copy your iTunes folder: /Users/username/Music/iTunes
    4) Copy your iPhone/iPod backups: /Users/username/Library/Application Support/MobileSync
    5) Copy your iTunes configuration files: /Users/username/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iTunes*
    6) Open iTunes on your new Mac and verify that Applications and Ringtones appear.
    7) Connect your iPhone/iPod to the new Mac and accept any new authorizations.
    8) Use iTunes on your old Mac to de-authorize the computer.
Your help and advice is appreciated

Is it possible yo only copy Username/Library/Mail and the com.apple.mail.plist file in Username/LibraryPreferences ?
Yes. You'll need to reenter the passwords for the mail accounts.
    Your iTunes plan looks good.

  • I had iTunes on my pc.  The Pc crashed and everything is gone.  When I try to sync my phone to iTunes on my new mac laptop it says it will erase everything on the phone.  How do I get the items on the phone into iTunes?

    Hello,
I had my itunes on my pc.  When it crashed I lost everything there.  I have an itunes on the new mac but it does not have the content that was in the old itunes.  When I try to sync or upgrade to the 5, it says that I will lose all my information on the phone.

I had the same problem, and tried what you did.  Then just uninstalled Quick Time and didn't reinstall as someone on here advised.  Still did not open.  Then ejected a disc I forgot I had inserted this morning to copy a song on to and iItunes opened.

  • How do I move iTunes to a new Mac without loosing my ratings and plays?

I don't have a new Mac yet, but before I buy one I'd like to know how to transfer my iTunes library.
I am really depending on my ratings and plays so I don't want to loose them.
So how should I do it? backup? home sharing?
And another question: I have my iTunes library on my external hd. Could I install the whole iTunes on the external hd and then use itunes on any Mac with the hd plugged in?

    paulkreuzer wrote:
so just to get it right: you mean copy the iTunes folder to new Mac INSTEAD of installing iTunes there?
iTunes will be installed on your new Mac. there will be an iTunes folder existing there but it will be devoid of content (just the default files).
by replacing this default iTunes folder with the one from your old Mac, you are copying the +*heart & soul+* of your library to the new machine: the all important *iTunes library file*.
the iTunes library file contains info such as playlists, playcounts, ratings, etc.

  • How do I point iTunes on a New Mac Mini to an External iTunes Library

I have a 90 Gb (7000 tracks) iTunes Library sitting on a network drive that I want to "relocate" from my Powerbook to my new Intel Mac Mini. Or rather I want to point iTunes on the new Mac Mini to the existing Library.
How can I achive this and still retain all my ratings and other track info (ie count)?

To move your songs from the network drive to the Mac Mini, add them to the iTunes on the Mac Mini, make sure that in Edit > Preferences > Advanced the default location is on the Mac Mini. Finally click Advanced > Consolidate Library. This will move the files to your Mac Mini.
On the other hand, if you want to point iTunes on the Mac Mini to the network drive, change the setting in the above preference location.

The keyword is "migration." Migrating or copying files for Adobe applications usually does not work. Not all of the necessary subsidiary files are copied to the right location.

  • What can I do simply  to keep all my previous contents, (own pics, videos, etc.) on my previously authorized iPad on PC, but get a new authorisation and a right syncronization, without data loss with a new  iTunes on my new Mac?

    Friends,
I already had an iPad(1) and its full contents (not only the purchased items, applications from Apple, but my all own pics, videos, songs etc.) is normally syncronized with an authorized PC (Windows) computer.
Now,  I've bought a new MacBook Air computer, and want to sell my PC. But I don't know how to transfer (or syncronize) all of the contents from my previous iTunes on PC to the new one on the Mac.
When I connected my iPad to my new MacBook Air, I promted, if I want to change authorization of my iPad to the MacBook.
But also got a warning, that the new iTunes will delete from my iPad all my previously syncronized items, pics, videos and music, with the previously authorized  iTunes on the previous computer, expect the saved pics from the net.
What can I do just like that, simply  to keep all my previous contents on my iPad, but have a new authorisation and a right syncronization, without data loss with the new  iTunes on my new Mac?
Thanks a lot for your answer.

Here are some instructions that I have posted several times that may be helpful to you as they have been to others. You can simply ignore anything that does not apply or that you have already done.
As Alan stated above - transferring the iTunes library is the best first step. If you can transfer the iTunes library to the Mac, most of this will be unecessary for you to do.
    Very Important ....
    1. Authorize the computer.
    2. Turn off auto sync in iTunes
    3. Transfer purchases
The text in italics is from the other thread - non italics are my words.
The following was copied from this thread. This is essentially what you want to accomplish.
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/11527071#11527071
    1) Without connecting your iPad to your new computer, start iTunes. Click on iTunes. Click on Preferences. Click on Devices. Check the box next to "Prevent your iPod etc. from automatically syncing." Click OK.
    2) Now connect your iPad to your computer and start iTunes.
    3) When iTunes starts, right click on your iPad under Devices in the left column. Select Transfer purchases etc.
    4) After it finishes transferring all your apps to your computer, right click on your iPad and select Backup your iPad.
    5) After it finishes backing up your iPad, right click on your iPad and select Restore etc.
    6) After it finishes restoring, left click on your iPad , then click on the Apps tab on top, and check the box next to Sync Apps, then click on Apply below.
If everything on your iPad looks good after the sync, go back and click on iTunes / Preferences / Devices and UN-check the box next to Prevent your iPod etc. The only other thing you may want to check is if your contacts, bookmarks, etc. are syncing correctly now. If not, go to the Info tab after connecting and make sure you indicate which features you want to sync with what sources.
Read this thread and the support links as well. There are apps that you can purchase that will allow you to transfer photos from the iPad to your computer. Look at Photo Transfer App in the App store and you can search for others as well.

This support site will help you with transferring iTunes music to your new computer.

One final note - you may want to leave auto sync turned off - but that is totally up to you. I never did use auto sync.

  • Is it possible to move music to iTunes on a new Mac using my iPod?

Could I move music to iTunes on my new Mac by plugging in my iPod?

Um, maybe but not really.  Many people make the mistake of using their i-devices as backup, but it really isn't set up to do it that way.  For one, you can only copy media purchased from Apple from an i-device to a computer.  Second, your library as you see it on a computer is structured by many files and folders which are not present on your i-device.  It would help if you provided a fuller scenario as to why you wish to do things this way.
Moving a library: Quick answer if you use iTunes' default preferences settings:  Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its sub-folders and files) intact to the other drive.  Hold down the option (alt) key (shift on Windows) and open iTunes.  At the prompt to create or choose a library choose the copied iTunes folder.

How do I transfer music off my iphone onto itunes on a new mac. I don't have the laptop I originally synced my iphone up with any more, so how can I do this without it?
I have tried to do this through home sharing but as I don't have the old laptop it wont let me.
    Any HELP please?!?
    Would be much appreciated.

The iphone is not a backup/storage device.  The sync is one way - computer to iphone.  The only exception is itunes purchases. File>Devices>Transfer Purchases
It has always been very basic to always maintain a backup copy of your computer for this very occasion.
Have you failed to do this?

This is a known bug which began to occur with the 10.4.8 update. I suggest you file a bug report with Apple. Its quite annoying and hopefully, the more people who contact Apple about it, the more importance they will give to fixing the problem.
