Itunes missing remote speakers airport express

I have windows xp & itunes. When I updated to itunes 7.1 my remote speakers were missing and i am unable to retrieve them.

The problem turns out to be an incompatibility with Bonjour for Windows. A post by "f00fighter" over in the "iTunes for Windows Upgrade Issues" forum solved it. I quote him below:
******Quote***********
Looks like this issue is due to an incompatibility between Bonjour for Windows and iTunes 7.1.0.59 for Windows (thanks toonz!)
To workaround the issue you can stop the Bonjour Service by going to Start \ Control Panel \ Administrative Tools \ Services, then highlight the Bonjour Service and stop it. You might also want to set the Startup status of the Bonjour Service to Manual (or Disabled) to prevent the service from starting automatically the next time you restart you PC.
Note - this is only a temporary fix, and turns off the Bonjour service...so don't do this if you have other applications that rely on the Bonjour Service. A fix from Apple is needed to truly "fix" this issue.

  • ITunes cannot connect to remote speakers / Airport Express

    Hi Guys
This is a quick post with a problem & solution.
I've been searching for ages tonight to find a solution to my problem:
'iTunes suddenly cannot connect to my Airport Express Speakers" and could not find one answer on here, only a mixture of replies all over the net.
So, just incase some people are still looking for an answer:
    What I did...
    1. Go to System Preferences, Network.
    2. Click Advanced, on the TCP/IP tab, set "Configure IPv6" to Off.
Open up Airport Utility, go to the Music tab, set a password (I did this just for the sake of seeing whether iTunes noticed that the Airport was now password protected, then atleast you know it's talking!)
    3. Open iTunes, go to preferences.
    4. Click on the devices tab, untick "Look for remote speakers connected with Airplay, Allow iTunes control from Remote Speakers, Forget All Remotes.
    5. Close iTunes
    6. Open iTunes, retick "Look for remote speakers connected with Airplay, Allow iTunes control from Remote Speakers, Forget All Remotes.
    7. Connect to remote speakers worked!

    thanks Simius,
I just tried what you said to do, i had it in Automatic, but when I momenterely switched to manual the fields were all blank so I left them that way and turned on to automatic as you said and left it in auto, then tried to change itunes speaker to remote airplay and it didn t work.
so i don t know what else to do, I read alot about this in the last few days the bug seems to be related to the newest itunes upgrade and with the presence of the IP6V not turned off completely.
in the old system one could turn it off completely, now the off button is gone.
there are work around using terminal, I tried that but it doens t recognize my commands, so it didn t work either.
    anybody has any idea?
    thansk a lot

  • Negligible audio from remote speakers - airport express

i've got a remote problem i just can't figure out.
i have been running my itunes through my home stereo system via my airport express. besides some inconsistent rebuffering problems, everything has run fine for about a month. about a week ago, i removed the ethernet cable to the airport for a while and then reinserted. my internet connection continues to work fine, but now i cannot play my itunes through my stereo receiver. if i turn my itunes volume onto full and my receiver to half volume, i can get some volume out of it, but negligible. at this volume, i should be blowing out the windows. i have tried re-starting my express, different audio input channels, new rca to mini-jack cable, a different stereo system, going through my airport admin and itunes preferences, running other equipment through the receiver (to ensure the receiver is working fine - it does) and nothing has resolved the issue.
if anyone can offer some advice, i'd appreciate it. this very well might drive me insane.

    Hi King Paul,
Airtunes dropping out? What do you have " Streaming Buffer Size " set to? I have mine set at medium.
    iTunes>preferences>advance>Streaming Buffer Size

  • ITunes can't find Airport Express remote speakers after PC standby

I use Airport Express 802.11n to drive my remote speakers over WiFi from iTunes. It works well, except for after my PC Laptop has been in standby (such as folding the screen). When it wakes up and regains network connectivity, iTunes can no longer find the Airport Express remote speakers. I can ping the Airport and it shows up in Airport Utility, so I have WiFi connection. It does not help to restart iTunes, I need to reboot Windows to allow iTunes to see the remote speakers again.
Does anyone have a tip of how I can get iTunes to "refresh" the Airport Express connection (zeroconf/Bonjour issue?) after standby wakeup?

    Holy moly. Now it works.
I restarted the Airport Express from the Airport Utility application, repaired persmissions and rebooted the computer as well.
Not much of a "fix" but sometimes you gotta do the most obvious I guess. (And yes I feel stupid)
    Cheers

  • ITunes sees remote speakers attached to airport express, but can't connect

"An error occurred while connecting to the remote speaker "Airport Express". The network connection failed."
    iTunes 9.1(79)
    Airport Extreme Base Station
Early model Airport Express connected to remote speakers
iTunes see the speakers in the drop down menu, and the airport express is connected to my network. I restored the airport express to factory defaults and started over. Same thing. Firmware shows as being current. Express has steady green light.
Any ideas? I am getting ready for my iPad, and need to get this fixed.
    Thanks in advance.

Same problem for me. Ever since I upgraded to 10.6.3 and iTunes 9.1, about once per week I'll get the error message when trying to get iTunes/Airtunes to connect to my older Airport Express (running firmware 6.3) "An error occurred while connecting to the remote speaker <insert speaker name here>. The network connection failed." (No error codes are given.)
Airport Utility sees the offending Airport Express just fine (and there's a green light on said AE).
Curiously, a newer AE-n, elsewhere in the house (running firmware 7.4.2) does NOT exhibit this problem.
Simply restarting the offending AE does NOT clear the problem. Restarting the main router - a Time Capsule DOES clear the problem. Alternatively, toggling off the Airtunes functionality on the offending AE, restarting it, then toggling Airtunes back on, and finally restarting it DOES clear the problem (as an alternate to restarting the router). No matter how the problem is cleared, it returns within a week. It's frustrating that the problem cannot be recreated immediately.
Probably not relevant, but the computer on which I'm running iTunes (a Mac Mini) is connected to my TC via ethernet, not wirelessly.
I've tried the suggestion of disabling ipv6. No effect.
I fear the only solution will be to scrap my older Airport Express and replace it with a newer n-model. But before I resign myself to the $100 fix, any more ideas?

  • Can't get itunes to connect to airport express via air tunes

    Hi,
I just bought and installed an airport express (for windows 7) everything is now connected but i can't get itunes to recognize my airport express via air tunes. I can see the multiple speakers in itunes, but when i click on it to connect to airport it just comes up with connecting, loads for about a minute then minimizes without connecting.
Has anyone else experienced this? How can i get this to work?

You've probaby solved this by now, but if not... When upgrading itunes on a Vista or Windows 7 machine with Windows Firewall running for some reason Bonjour can't get through the firewall and thus Airplay does not work. Not good when all your Hi-fi's are connected via airport express!
I found to resolve the issue you have to install an older version of Bonjour. It won't work if you try to do this straight from Apple.  So try this...
    1. Firstly install and older version of itunes from the web (say version 10.1) Try www.oldapps.com
    2. Then find the Bonjour file in program files
    3. Cut and paste it to your desktop with its contents
    4. Uninstall itunes and Bonjour via your control panel (the desktop file of Bonjour you moved will still be there).
    5. Install your new version of itunes, say version 10.5, from the apple website.
    6. Before opening it go to program files and cut the (newly installed) Bonjour file and paste it somewhere different to the desktop (you can't just delete it). It does not matter where you won't be needing it.
    7. Now Cut and paste the old version of Bonjour you stuck on the desktop in Program files in place of the one you just moved.
    8. Hey presto, Airplay, Windows firewall and your Airport Express' should all get on again.
    Hope this works...

There are at least 3 versions:

(I wouldn't regard the MM-1 as a Zeppelin but not sure if B&W call it that).
I can't do much more to convince you!
You could always update that wiki

  • ITunes can't see airport express remote speakers using airtunes

Running Windows Vista, I have been through the process of joining the Airport Express as a client to an existing wireless network and have got a green light showing (hurrah). iTunes is not, however showing the option of selecting that AE to use as remote speakers.
I have checked that the 'look for remote speakers....' option has been selected in iTunes and have opened port 5353 UDP on the Windows firewall, and have tried turning the firewall off altogether, but still no joy.
As with other Vista users I can't see the AE using the Admin Utility, but I can get to it using 'Other' and the IP address that the DHCP server on my wireless router (Buffalo) has issued. On the music tab on the Base Station the 'Enable AirTunes on this base station' check box is connected.
So it seems that everything is good to go, just that iTunes doesn't display the base station as an option to select in iTunes - can anyone help? Thanks

    Oh. My. God.
Who knew that the "multiple speakers" window can be resized?
Quite by accident, I discovered my other two AE's "hiding" outside the window...
    Sheesh.

  • ITunes does not see airport express speakers but airfoil does

    iTunes 6.0.2 and AE 6.3
iTunes does not see the AE speakers but Airfoil does.
Have restarted AE to no avail.

Having a similar problem. iTunes 6.0.2 "sees" the Airport Express but cannot select the speakers associated with the Airport. iTunes 6.0.1 works on a Mac Mini with the same Express. Tried to re-load the system from the CDs but iTunes 6.0.2 still on

  • Itunes / Multiple speakers / airport Express

When I select multiple speakes in Itunes i get an error saying "an unknown error occurred (-3256)." I can select the remote speakers by them self and they work fine but when I select all speakers or multiple speakers I get the error message. what can I do?

Only firewall I have is what is standard on my mac, and if that is what your talking about, I do not know how you do that UDP traffic thing.

  • Stream content from iTunes to AppleTV and Airport Express

I have an Apple TV in family room which is wirelessly connected to my home network. I also have a PC connected via Ethernet to my network. All my music is stored on an external drive connected to my PC (I don’t store any media on the ATV, as my music is well over 400GB). This setup works great, and allows me to stream content from the external drive to my ATV which is connected to a stereo.
Next, I purchased an Airport Express, connected it to a second stereo in my basement. After spending 3 hours trying to get it connected to my network, (I had to disable all wireless encryption, and use MAC filtering to keep network secure), I am now able to stream media from iTunes on the PC, to the stereo connected to the Airport Express.
What I would like to do now, is be able to select a song from the Apple TV (using ATV remote, or iPhone Remote), and have it play in both places. Since the media itself is coming from iTunes running on the PC with the external drive, and it gets streamed from there to Apple TV, how can I also stream the same content to the Airport Express?
The folks at the Apple store say this is a feature, but no one seems to know how to make it work. I have also read hundreds of posts online, and some say you can do this, others say you cannot. All of those who say it is not possible, state you cannot stream from ATV to AE, but in my case, the media is not on the ATV, it is on the PC, and I just want to use ATV to select the song. From there, it would be iTunes that would send the content to both the ATV and the AE.
Can someone help myself and many others put this question to rest - can it be done, or not?

Thanks for the reply. Just as you indicated, I figured out how to use iPhone remote to tell iTunes on PC to output to Express, Apple TV and PC, and that works great - I can even turn on/off any of the speakers from the iPhone - this is so COOL!
While you answered the question, I am curious about the architecture of all this...If the media is actually on the PC and is controlled by iTunes, isn't the Apple TV doing the same thing as the iPhone Remote - just telling iTunes what to play, and iTunes sends the content to whatever speakers are defined? Keeping that thought, if you can control iTunes via iPhone Remote, and the content will play on any speakers you select, then it would make sense that you could do the same thing with the Apple TV menu - tell iTunes what to play, and let iTunes send to whatever speakers you have selected.

  • ITunes not connecting to Airport Express

Trying to play music through remote speakers. Get an iTunes error message stating remote speakers can't be found. The airport express is set up properly, and worked great for months. Now its not letting me play any music. The express is recognized in the airport utility, and I am pretty sure its set up right. Running through a wireless system on the airport extreme. Any help would be appreciated.

Temporarily, plug a pair of headphones into the AirPort Express and listen to them to see if you can hear an audio signal. If you can, the AirPort Express is working fine and the problem is most likely in your connecting cable between the Express and your stereo.
If you hear no sound in the headphones, then you may have a problem with the AirPort Express or the connection between your wireless router and the AirPort Express. Position the Express close to the wireless router and use the headphones again to see if you pickup a signal at that location. If you do, then move the Express further away and test again, etc.

  • 1 set of speakers, Airport Express & TV

I have a set of Bose computer speakers connected to my TV via the audio out jack on the TV. I would like to have the option of also playing music through these speakers via Airplay, by connecting them to an Airport Express unit. Is there a way to make this happen (using a splitter or Y connector or something) so that I can switch back and forth between the TV and iTunes as my audio source, without actually unplugging and replugging?
Many thanks in advance if anyone can steer me in the right direction.

From iTunes using Multiple Speakers (you can control with the Remote app on iPhone/iPad too), but not from AppleTV itself.

  • Automate iTunes to Remote Speakers

A couple of years ago, I purchased an app Alarm Clock 2, from App Store, which has serviced my purposes until recently.  Up until now, my computer was in my bedroom and I used Alarm Clock 2 to play a Play List in the morning before my alarm went off.
Now that my computer is in another part of my home, I can't use this solution.  I have added a speaker system using AirPlay and for manual operation it works just fine.  However, if I use Alarm Clock 2 to start a play list at a preset time, it plays the list on the computer speakers EVEN IF I HAVE select Air Play in the running copy of iTunes on my iMac.  That is, I select my AirPlay speakers and manually run a play list and it plays through the remote speakers.  If I then have Alarm Clock 2 start a play list changing nothing else, it plays on the computer speakers even though iTunes window shows the AirPlay device still selected.  If I manually start a different (or restart the same) play list, it now plays on the remote speakers.
To summarize, what I want to do is
       1.  Run a play list at a time of day (waking the computer if necessary) and have the music output go to the AirPlay speakers.
    Any ides?
    Thanks,
    Bruce

Also posted in iTunes won't play through Airport...: Apple Support Communities
Some success. But Lion Server 10.7.3 is having trouble with the older g remotes now.
After setting up a few things while talking with Clarke at Apple Server Support we had a Lion 10.7 compatible version of Server Admin 10.7 installed and could reach the server firewall. Short answer: had to turn it off to get the aiport express remotes to accept streams from the server.
The new downside is that Airport Utility 6 can't deal with the older 802.11g airport express remotes. Further the server can't select them if they have been power cycled. The only way to get the server's copy of iTunes 10.5.3 to see the first two g remotes is to restart the whole server. Restarting iTunes isn't enough. Logging out and back in isn't enough. Haven't found a more surgical way to reconnect.
Need to try to punch only the necessary holes in the server firewall and use it instead.
I'd really love to see a very well documented description of the steps that iTunes goes through when connecting to airport express remotes with the differences when running on a server. ALL the steps, including handshaking and those high port numbers and just what keeps getting screwed up, like with the new 10.7.3 server update.

  • Stream Music over iPhone from iTunes Server direct to Airport Express?

    Hi all
I have a wireless network supported from timecapsule which will be expanded via airport extress. I use airport express to stream music from my iTunes library to defined speakers via remote app on my iPhone.
Due to lack of diskspace on my MacBook Pro, I bought a Synology NAS to store all my music on it and use the iTunes server.
Unfortunately, there is obviously no app from Apple available to connect to iTunes server (via iPhone or iPad) select music to play and also the speakers to stream to!
    Thanks for your help!
    Regards, Jean-Claude

I think this is really disappointing especially since it seems to be able to stream from the Apple TV G1 to Airport Express devices. Also it's weird that you will be able to stream from the iPad to Airport Express devices including Apple TV G2 but the same thing is not possible from the Apple TV G2... Let's hope they'll change that but maybe they did it on purpose because the Apple TV G2 is streaming itself... This is really disappointing.
Also I recognized that music that is played via the home sharing on your Apple TV G2 doesn't include the ratings. Ratings are not transferred via home sharing. I don't think your playcount etc. will be updated as well. This is very disappointing as well. What do you guys think about that?
