ITunes moves music up one level after play

Hi All:
iTunes recently started moving played music up a folder level once played.  I have iTunes 10.4.1 on a Windows 7 machine, and it is set to organize my music.
Normally, music is kept in the subfolder Music in my iTunes library folder, but the MP3 and associated artist/album folder moved to the iTunes directory (above the Music subfolder) after a single play of a given song.  Why is this occuring, and can it be stopped.  Any help is much appreciated.

Here are typical layouts for the iTunes folders:
If you have upgraded from version 8 (or earlier) to iTunes 9 (or later) at some point, then your media folder (everything inside the red outline) may still be called iTunes Music instead of iTunes Media. The extra Music folder inside the media folder is used if you have allowed iTunes to Upgrade to iTunes Media Organization (iTunes 9) or used File > Library > Organize Library > Reorganize files in the folder "<Media Folder>" (iTunes 10). Depending on your choices for Keep iTunes Media folder organized and Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library plus a little bug in which one build changed the name of the file storing the choice of layout it is quite easy for some of your files to be organized according to one layout and some the other.
Assuming you're happy letting iTunes organize your files the following steps should tidy things up (should it be necessary):
1. Select File > Library > Organize Library... > Tick Reorganize files in the folder "<Media Folder>" and click OK. Skip if this option is greyed out (already upgraded) or you prefer the older layout. Also make sure <Media Folder> is pointed to the correct place, e.g. iTunes Media or iTunes Music, not iTunes.
2. Select File > Library > Organize Library... > Tick Consolidate files and click OK. This will bring any files currently organised outside the designated media folder into it.   NB This will create duplicate copies of any file that needs to be consolidated, and you will need to manually clean up afterwards. If space is at a premium try my scripts Unconsolidated to find out what would need moving and ConsolidatebyMoving to move rather than copy it.
3. Select Edit > Preferences > Advanced tab, uncheck Keep iTunes Media folder organized and click OK.
4. Select Edit > Preferences > Advanced tab, check Keep iTunes Media folder organized and click OK. This triggers iTunes into reorganizing everything according to your preferences.
5. (Optional) Close iTunes, rename the folder iTunes Music as iTunes Media then restart iTunes. Check under Edit > Preferences > Advanced tab that the location has automatically updated. If you can't access the media for any reason just undo the folder rename.
6. (Optional - Windows only) If Windows Media Player has ever had access to your files it may have liberally scattered folder artwork files about which iTunes won't tidy up when it reorganizes things, thus leaving behind a heap of folders with artwork and no media. I've written a script for cleaning this mess up called CleanDeadArt.
PS If you really prefer the older layout, but it is already in the new one then edit the file called .iTunes Preferences.plist in your media folder and change the integer from 1 to 0 before doing step 3.
If I read your post correctly it sounds as if things are a little mixed up already, with the media folder preference pointed at iTunes instead of an iTunes Music or iTunes Media folder inside it. The music popping up a level suggests your library was in the new format but now thinks it should be in the old one and is "correcting" tracks as they are played. If you can confirm the exact arrangement of media files and media folders I can probably suggest a way to restore order things without duplicating all of your files. If you simply tell iTunes to start using iTunes/iTunes Media as the media folder then your existing content will be unconsolidated as far as iTunes is concerned.

Can I move music from one apple account to another?

Typically not.  Consider the case where you used an Apple account (call it A1) to purchase songs from iTunes.  Now you are interested in moving your music to account A2.  Well A2 does not own the music - A1 does.  So that's a problem.

If you want to change your iCloud ID to another existing ID you'll have to delete the account, create a new account with the other ID, and migrate your data (including the calendar) to the new account.  To do this, first go to Settings>iCloud on your iPad and turn all data you are syncing with iCloud (contacts, calendars, etc.) to Off.  When prompted choose to keep the data on your iPad.  After everything is turned off, scroll to the bottom and tap Delete Account.  (Note, this will delete the account from your iPad but not from iCloud.  The account will remain in iCloud if anyone else chooses to remain signed into it an continue to use it.)  Next, set up the new iCloud account using your new ID, then turn syncing for your data (contacts, etc.) back to On.*  When prompted, choose Merge.  This will upload the data to your new account.
    * If you only want to upload the calendar, only turn Calendar to On; but I'm assuming you will be the owner and want this to be your iCloud account on your iPad with all your data, and then your can share the calendar with others and administrate it.

  • Keyword management - how do you move keywords up one level?

How do you move keywords up one level in the hierarchy? Sometimes when working quickly, keywords and subgroups of keywords get inadvertently highlighted and moved as a child under another keyword or group. I can't figure out how to move them back out again to the root level.

I can't figure out how to move them back out again to the root level.
You can drag and drop sub keywords to other locations higher or lower in the nested folder but you don't seem able to drag from sub level to root level.
The easiest workaround would be to have a regular Back up of the list (pop menu from icon top right keyword panel: export keywords) and when not having added new words just use clear and import the back up to restore.
If you did edit the list you can choose to export current list and with a simple text editor make the changes for keywords and sub keywords you want, save and then use again clear and import to retrieve the correct list.

  • How do i move itunes and music from one pc to another?

All - i need to move all my music from one pc to another - does anyone know how to do this? i am not very technically minded and ever time i try to look it up i get very confused! thanks in advance.

I set up a home network and transferred it using that. See if you can get a PC-savvy friend to help you, or hire someone to do this. It is nearly impossible to talk someone through this over the internet.
Windows has some built-in helps to tell you how to set up a home network and turn on file sharing. If you don't understand that, get someone to help!

  • ITunes Match, Music App Crash (even while playing a song)

    Ok,
I read a lot of posts about this. There doesn't seem to be one concerte answer.  I also notice that I get prompted often for my iTunes Password. Not sure if that is to connect to iTunes Match or Itunes Apps updates.
Either way after Re-Opening the Music App on my Iphone 4 3-4 times and select a playlist (I created on PC) and start playing a song, my phone goes to the lockscreen as usual and blackens.  So my songs are playing, then I decided to unlock my phone. Since the Music app was the last app open it still shows the last Song that was being played before it locked the screen. Then after 10-20 seconds of hagning there, the APP closes!  The current song stops playing, and I have to repoen the Music App 3-4 times again.
    REALLY ANNOYING!
Getting my playlists to sync correctly is a hassle too.  I hate wanting to add a song to the playlist on the iDevice itself without updating iTunes Match with the changes I made.  Does it push that change from my iPhone to my iPod only once I run Update iTunes Match?
I'm trying to make the most of this but it does have plenty of issues!

yes i have the same problem and it has happened 4 times now .. It is ridiculous .. Putting right off Apple Devices .. seem to be getting like Microsoft ... Too Buggy.. How can your music just vanish ?

  • Need to move music from one computer to another

Wondering how to move my music from one computer to another. My laptop is being replaced and need to move all my iTunes items from here to a desktop. What is the best/most cost effective way to do this? TY

It is very easy. First get something to transfer your itunes file to the laptop (network$, thumb drive$$ (depending the size), external hard drive$$$ with cost of drive and plus a case it can be costly). Those are in order of slowness! After all those files are on the desktop download itunes. DO NOT download itunes first you will be begging for trouble. Open itunes and it will take a few seconds and it should find the file on it's own. Now all you need to do is sign into itunes agree to all the fun stuff and there you go. I did mine with an external Sata hard drive via esata and it could not of been easier. To find the file you need go into music/my music and find the big file named itunes. just copy and past and let er rip.
    Good luck

    Open old library.
Drag files from iTunes window to a folder on desktop then delete from iTunes.

May I ask why you are creating a new library?

  • HT1329 How do I move music from one iPod to another?

I just bought an iPhone and want to move music from my old iPod to my new phone.  Any suggestions?

It needs to go through iTunes.  But there is no way to transfer songs from iPod to iTunes library (except for music you purchased from iTunes Store).  However, there are third-party methods and utilities that can transfer from iPod to computer.  If you do a Google search on "ipod transfer," you should get some links.
Once the song files are on your computer, add them to your iTunes library.  You can then sync your iPhone to the iTunes library.
Alternately, if you sign up for the iTunes Match service, your iTunes music library on your computer will become available from iCloud.  You can set your new iPhone (assuming you bought a "new" iPhone) to sync from iCloud, instead of from your computer's iTunes.  All of your music will be available wirelessly, wherever you have an Internet connection.

  • My iPod Nano will not sync ratings to iTunes if more than one playlist is played

When I try to sync my iPod back to my computer it will only take song ratings I've changed if I only played music with one playlist.  If I've played more than one it doesn't transfer them and just acts if they never existed.  Why is this?

If you honestly did not damage the iPod, the broken screen should be covered under warranty. Do you live near an Apple Store?

  • Can I move music from one computer to another using iTunes?

I have two computers, one I want to retire.  Both computers are running iTunes.  I want to move my music from the old PC to the new one.  I turned on Sharing.  I can play music from the old PC on the new one.  Can I move the music files within iTunes or do I do a backup/restore of the music outside of iTunes?

The easiest way to do this is with File > Add to Library...
Navigate to the other computer's iTunes Music folder and select everything you want to copy.

  • How do I move music from one iPhone to another?

All my music is stored on my iPhone 3G; the computer with it stored on it in iTunes crashed & I can't get the music off.  I'd like to move the music from my iPhone 3G to my new iPhone 4, but I can't figure out how to do it.

Photos in the Camera Roll are included with the iPhone's backup. You can transfer the backup from one iPhone to another which will include all data included with the backup.
Photos and videos in the Camera Roll can be imported by your computer. After importing from one iPhone, the photos can be transferred to another iPhone via the iTunes sync process.
Photos in the PhotoStream on one iPhone running iOS 6 can be made available on another iPhone running iOS 6 by creating a shared PhotoStream album, or if the same iCloud account is accessed on both iPhones, the PhotoStream album will be identical on each iPhone.
