ITunes movie genres reverting?

I have a growing collection of iTunes movies from both iTunes store purchases, as well as digital downloads bundled with discs.
Apple likes to categorize just about everythign into "Action & Adventure".  I have changed the genre on some of the purchased movies to things like "Kids & Family", "Thriller" or "Sci-Fi & Fantasy".
Every once in a while, I will restart iTunes on my Mac Mini and notice that genres have reverted back to (probably) their defaults.  When I look at the "Get Info" data for a reverted video, I notice that the genre I've changed it to (e.g. "Kids & Family") is correctly listed there, but the movie is grouped into the "Action & Adventure" genre within iTunes.  Interestingly, I will change nothing in the Get Info dialog, click on OK and the movie magically appears in the genre category I "moved it to".
Music tracks do this, as well, but let's just focus on Movies; does anyone know of a work around to stop this annoying behavior from iTunes?
Thanks, in advance.

I'm sorry you are having the same issues, but feel vidicated that I am not alone with these challenges.  I really like the Apple eco-system for media, and this is definitely a 1st-world problem, but is very annoying nonetheless.
On the music side, I went into my iTunes account "Purchases" link and set as Hidden all of my iTunes store music purchases.  I just did this last night and we'll see if this helps with my music problems (which have been endless, since signing up for iTunes Match - which I disconnected from all of my devices awhile back).
I have a number of movie sound tracks that keep reverting to "Compilation" and changing genre; I went through these and correct them all, after hiding them in the store.  We'll see.  If this works, I may do the same with Movies.
TV shows have (mostly) worked really well because I rarely need to edit the meta data for these (exceptions being some recent episodes were missing the season number, which screws up how they sort in Apple TV).  I fixed some of these last night (Ghost in the Shell: Arise) and we'll see if they stick.
I would be OK with hiding songs and movies, but TV shows are really nice in the cloud, since new episodes update frequently.

  • ITunes movie Genres

How can I create a movie genre in iTunes?

Right-click (or Control-click) on the movie and select Get Info from the pop-up menu. In the panel that opens, click on the Info tab. At the bottom of the panel you will see an item labelled "Genre". Type a genre name in the box to create a new genre, or click on the down pointing arrow to reveal genres already in place.

  • Itune movie genres

    Hi,
I have several videos stored in Itunes under "Movies".
I have noticed that you can create "Genres" or categorize the videos or movies to better organize them.
How do you go about creating new categories or "genres"
    to file your videos under?
    Thank you.

If you right mouse click on an item, select info then the space to set the Genre is at the bootm. If the Standard Genres are not suitable then type in your own in the box. It will Then be available for future use.

  • Change iTunes Movie Genre in iCloud

Simple problem.  I buy a movie on iTunes.  Once downloaded, I change the genre of the movie.  I then update iTunes Match.  However, on AppleTV under Movies > Purchased, the genres that show are not my iTunes genres and the movie has the store genre, not mine in iTunes.  If I go to Computers on AppleTV and connect directly to my iTunes library, the genre is the way I want it.
How do I change the genre of an iTunes purchased movie in iCloud/iTunes Match and have that genre show up in Movies > Purchased on AppleTV?

iTunes Match and iTunes in the Cloud are not the same service and using the "update iTunes Match" command will have no affect on the ID3 tags of videos in the cloud. In fact, at this time, it is not possible to change the tags of videos in the cloud. To use custom ID3 tags in your videos, download them to your computer and share them with the Apple TV via Home Sharing.

  • ITunes changing movie genre

I appears that iTunes Rev 11.1.5 and earlier has been changing my DvD movie genres in my library. I can set the genre and come back weeks later and they all seem to default to Action & Adventure which happens to be the first custom genre in my list. This issues has been happening for several iTunes revs now. I have a large movie collection so going back and reentering the genres is not a solution. The issue voids me of any genre sorting.

    1. iTunes > Preferences > Advanced > Keep iTunes Media folder organized and Copy files to iTumes Media folder when adding to library [ CHECK ]
    2. Do a iTunes menu File > Library > Organize Library... > Consolidate files
    and then try again.

  • My customized genres get changed back to the iTunes default genre

I customize my genres, I find the genres provided by iTunes to be insufficiently accurate. Every time I buy new music from iTunes - or download previously purchased content - my genres are set back to the original iTunes genre.
When I play a track with a changed-back genre it once again reverts to the genre I assigned it. But I am now into thousands of tracks that have customized genres, so I've begun avoiding iTunes and buying from Amazon simply to avoid contact between my iTunes application and the iTunes store, so that it doesn't set back my customized genres.
Not sure that was clear:  Example:
I bought Lou Reed's "Hudson Wind Meditations" in the iTunes store, and I download it to my iTunes software so I can sync with my iPod and iPhone. The genre it is assigned by iTunes is "World." I consider this the default genre.
I don't consider it "World" music, and want to find it along with my other Lou Reed tracks when sorting by genre, so I change the genre to "Rock - Avantgarde - NY". I have a number of customized genres.
The next time I buy and/or download anything from the iTunes store, all my customized genres are reset to what to the default genres the tracks had upon purchase.  - This is highly frustrating, because I have given thousands of tracks customized genres. So after downloading something from the iTunes store, my Lou Reed "Hudson Wind Meditation" shows the genre as the default genre again, in this case it says "World" again.
Oddly enough, if I play a track that had a custom custom genre but that was changed back after contact with the iTunes store, it reverts back to the customized genre. So if I play the Lou Reed track again, it changes back to my customized genre as soon as I hit play (it would change back to "Rock - Avantgarde - NY".
It isn't a tenable solution to hit play on every track after every new download. Nor is going back in and re-customizing every album in a bulk move.
Can I lock genres? Help please.
iTunes 11.2.2 running on 10.9.4, but it's been doing this for several iterations.

Go to iTunes > Preferences > Store and turn off
Show iTunes in the Cloud purchases
Share details about your library with Apple
On any iOS device go to Settings > Music and turn off
    Show All Music
Close and reopen iTunes and/or reset the device and you should see your version of the metadata for each track rather than the original store data.
(Not sure if this also works if iTunes match is in use since I don't use it.)

  • Is there any way to prohibit certain movie categories or ratings from showing up I'm my iTunes movie home page

Hi, I'd like to know if there's a way to customize what shows up on my iTunes movie main page. When I go into iTunes, there are often categories that I have no interest in which show up on the initial page of Movies when I go into iTunes on my iPad (and I'm assuming this would be the same on my PC version).
Can I customize the categories to only show ones I'm interested in or prohibit certain categories? My kids use the iPad as well, so I don't want horror movie images etc slammed across the movie wall.
Also, I don't rent rated R movies, so it would be easier to just have those not show up at all. It doesn't appear there are any handy settings that allow me to customize what I see, but thought I'd ask in case I'm wrong.

You can't control which genres show, but you can control which films show by their age ratings. On your iPad you can use Settings > General > Restrictions > Movies (under the 'Allowed Content' heading). On your computer's iTunes you can use Edit > Preferences and use the Parental tab to set which films (and there is a similar setting for TV programmes) can be accessed (screenshot is from a Mac, but it should be similar on a PC) :

  • Movie Genres

iTunes obviously has some preloaded movie genres. If you add a new movie and select the right genre it shows the iTunes icon for that genre when the "Genres" tab is selected. If you enter a genre that is not preloaded into iTunes (such as "Suspense"), it just gives the icon of whatever movie you have labeled as "Suspense". Is there a way (other than trial and error) to find out what genres are preloaded into iTunes and is there a way to form custom genres that have the same icon format as the preloaded genre icons?

Find the artwork you want in the proper shape. Label it "genre-xxxxM.jpg". (Replace xxxxx with the genre name you want. Drag it into the resources folder I mentioned above.
Click on the genres.plist file in the same folder. It will open in Text Edit.
Add the following for each genre you want to add:
    <dict>
    <key>matchString</key><string>xxxxx</string>
    <key>resourceFile</key><string>genre-xxxxx.jpg</string>
    <key>kind</key><string>movie</string>
    </dict>
Use the tab key to align the new entry with the others, and save the file. You can insert the new entry between any of the original entries.
If you want an image for music genres, do the same thing, but do not put the "M" in the image title and do not add the "<key>kind</key><string>movie</string>" line in the .plist file entry.
Restart iTunes and enjoy your new images. Keep in mind that an iTunes update will replace all your hard work, save a copy of the new "resources" folder separate from your iTunes application.
Thanks for your question. Gave me a couple hours of work this afternoon. I found some good .jpg
    files using Google Image Search.

  • Movie Genre not showing

I have iTunes 11.0.1 on an iMac. When I import an MPEG4, then select "Get Info", the genre category shows only music genres and I can't get the movie genres; how do I change this?
The Media Kind under Options is set to "Movie"...

You type the Genre you want to the Movie to be into the Genre text field.

  • Why cant I add my old iTunes movies into iTunes 10.5

After upgrading my computer for Windows XP to Windows 7 I reloaded iTunes 10.5. Why can't I import my old iTunes movies to my new iTunes movie library? I've tried everything the tutorial instructed me to do. What now?

I can set the ipod up to play my library, start a song and the plug in usb cable. As long as I dont try to cahnge songs it will play all the way through my song list .If i try to change songs  it will revert to those same 10 songs. Something is blocking it from playing what ever  i choose in the song library. Could it be that the stereo is not compatible to the i touch? Iam totally puzzled.

  • Changing Movie Genre Corrupts File?

I believe I just discovered a pretty mean bug. I was trying to organize the videos in my iTunes "movies" section, including some home videos. I wanted to add a "genre" to my home videos, so I went to "get info" and manually added the genre "Home Videos." After that, the thumbnail picture disappeared from the videos, and a few minutes later they were unplayable. I replaced them with fresh copies (thank God I'd backed them up), repeated the process, and it happened again. Does it make sense for this to be linked to the "genre" change, or do I have a virus, or is my iTunes just fubar?

    1. iTunes > Preferences > Advanced > Keep iTunes Media folder organized and Copy files to iTumes Media folder when adding to library [ CHECK ]
    2. Do a iTunes menu File > Library > Organize Library... > Consolidate files
    and then try again.

  • ITunes movies metadata reset after download

For a variety of reasons I sometimes find it necessary to change the metadata for movies and TV shows that I've downloaded from iTunes: change genre, remove dates from titles, group sequential films in a trilogy, etc. However, when I download a new movie, many of those changes are reset to the original metadata. Simply clicking on Get Info for a movie solves the problem, i.e. I don't have to edit it again, but going through my entire library, finding and clicking on Get Info for every effected movie takes ages. Is there any way to set the metadata in stone? Or failing that is there one simple fix once the metadata has been reset?
    - I use the latest version of iTunes on the latest OS on a MacBook Pro. My library is stored on an external hard drive (WD Studio) via Airport Extreme (older version).
    Thank you.
    AB

Yes - it does work and has saved me a lot of grief. I've actually modified it to make it even easier. I'm going to try to paste in the script here but am not sure Apple will let it through. The way I identify tracks that have metadata corrupted by Apple is to add a special character ( "|" ) at the end of the "sort name". When Apple corrupts the metadata that character disappears. I have a standard playlist to which I add all tracks with metadata that I've modified and a smart playlist that looks for any tracks in that playlist but don't have the "|" in the "sort name". Anything in that playlist has been corrupted by Apple. This scripts fixes the tracks in that playlist.
Here's the script. If Apple doesn't let it through I'm not going to be posting or emailing it. Thanks much to the original author.
    Cheers,

Does not require tracks be pre-selected
Instead it touches all tracks in special smart playlists.
Those playlists are setup to only contain tracks with metadata that I changed but Apple subsequently corrupted
Corrupted tracks identified by those missing a special character "|" that I added to the "sort name"
Created 3 playlists to test this. This script lets you select which one to check
If the selected playlist is not empty is will tell you how many there are and ask if you want to continue
If the playlist is empty the only option is to quit
This is rough code but it works
Next update will be to run this automatically on a schedule
Tip on how to do that here

  • Is is possible to customize movie genre options?

is is possible to customize movie genre options? At the moment there are a limited amount of options for genres in itunes. I have several more genres than are accounted for ie comedy drama as well as comedy, for which I would like to set a custom icon . I would also like to, for instance, set a genre for a specific movie star. Not giantly important in the scheme of things of course, but it would look much nicer in apple tv.
    any suggestions appreciated.
    thanks

how can I get an itunes movie from macbook to apple tv via airplay?

You don't use Airplay.  You set up Home Sharing on both and under the Computers section of AppleTV you'll then find it under Movies (or Rentals if rented), assuming it's in a compatible format.
