ITunes Movie rental expiry - option to extend rental?

A movie I rented is about to expire and I never had a chance to watch it! Any chance I can extend the rental for a few more days?

You can always call Apple customer support for iTunes and ask. As long as you don't a long history of such requests, they'll most likely extend your expiration a few days, or even refund you the cost of the film so you can re-download it without paying double. (Amazon Instant Video does this on case-by-case basis as well.)

  • Can anyone give me advice on how to deal with a corrupted itunes movie rental?

Can anyone give me advice on how to deal with a corrupted itunes movie rental? I tried to download a movie and have been continuously trying to download it through the "check for available downloads" option, but it will not download.

I'd report the problem to the iTunes Store.
Log in to the Store. Click on "Account" in your Quick Links. When you're in your Account information screen, go down to Purchase History and click "See all".
Find the item that is not downloading properly. If you can't see "Report a Problem" next to the entry, click the "Report a problem" button. Now click the "Report a Problem" link next to the item.
(Not entirely sure what happens after you click that link, but fingers crossed it should be relatively straightforward.)

  • Can I watch an iTunes movie rental on a TV connected via mini displayport?

I'm not sure if there's been any headway with this, but I've got a mini displayport to HDMI adaptor on the way that I'm going to use to connect my MacBook Pro to my HDTV, effectively using the TV as an external monitor.
And of course, I want to watch some iTunes movie rentals on the TV instead of my laptop, but digging around the internet has shown that I might be facing an issue relating to the HDCP standard that would prevent me from being able to use my TV in this manner.
Is this still an issue? I have a fall 2009 MacBook Pro, which may be important, as I've read that Apple modified the mini displayport on the MacBooks in 2010.
Other than renting a movie as a sort of guinea pig with the possibility of being shot down and wasting my money, is there any way to know if this is going to work? Or is it simply a fact that any monitor/TV connected to my MacBook through the mini displayport is incompatible with HDCP, and I'm totally out of luck?
(Which, FYI Apple, is utter horse **** and is absolutely counter-productive to the notion of encouraging me to pay for digital entertainment.)
    What are your thoughts, folks?

If your HDTV is HDCP compliant, you probably will have no problems. But you might want to read this information which while written a while back still, to the best of my knowledge, applies:
    http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/articles/comments/16488
HDCP compliance is, from what I've read, rather a "rubber ruler" so even if your TV lists as being HDCP, it might or might not work correctly with your Mac. Testing with one movie first might avoid an expensive surprise.
As to your complaint to Apple, it probably wasn't up to Apple but instead was forced on them as part of the conditions by the content owners for licensing movies and shows to the iTunes Store. But feel free to comment to Apple via their feedback pages:

  • TS1717 iTunes movie rental stops playing on ipad

iTunes movie rental keeps freezing at same point in rental is there anything I can do?

I have the same problem. At first I got this message:
This movie can be played only on displays that support HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection).
I have a brand new macbook pro 15" with a 2.2 GHz Intel Core i7 and 8GB of ram. I have purchased numerous TV episodes in both HD & SD and have no issues. i rented this movie yesterday and could only play it via my Apple TV. I haven't installed the latest OS update but my itunes is up to date and like I mentioned I can play everything else.
I just tried again after changing the setting to switch displays to save power. Now every time I try to play the movie it asks me to authorize my computer, then tells me its already authozied, then gives me a black screen in play mode with no movement on the play indicator.

  • My itunes movie rental keeps freezing how can i continue watching it?

my itunes movie rental is frozen and will not let me watch past a little over an hour and half. how can i continue my movie?

    Hey rossfromwarren,
Thanks for the question. It sounds like you were experiencing an issue with an iTunes Movie Rental. Due to the time limits associated with rentals, you may wish to report a problem with your purchase if the issue was not resolved before expiration:

  • My iTunes movie rentals won't play. How can I fix this?

I've been able to purchase and download iTunes movie rentals. However, when I click 'play' iTunes attempts to play the movie but it doesn't start. I don't get a playback window only the movie title in the 'play' pane. The counter does not run.
Can this be fixed? Is it a bug in 10.7.5 or iTunes?

Did you try to connect in recovery mode, explained in this article?

  • Does anyone have problems with iTunes movie rentals freezing in the middle of the movie?

Does anyone have problems with iTunes movie rentals freezing in the middle of the movie, requiring a force quit, which causes your rental to disappear? This has happened multiple times to me recently. Last time Apple didn't refund my money after reporting the problem. I have been using iTunes for many years but am about to give up.

Correction: I was refunded for the previous movie freeze.

    Hi Epski
Let us know how you go as i'm having the same issue also. I upgraded to yosemite and itunes 12 at the same time and thought the OS upgrade was the issue. I downgraded back to Mavericks again (for lots of reasons i won't go in to here) thinking this would fix the problem but it didn't.
When i play any video content from itunes 12 in full screen goes dark once the controls fade away. QT, appletv or anything else plays them perfectly, as per itunes 11!

  • Why does it take so long to download an itunes movie rental

I've got a great high speed internet connection (54 MBPS) and typical downloads of 4-5 GB take about 30 minutes. My Itunes movie rental is taking about 40 hours, and I'm only managing about 500 kB per second. What gives? Is this punishment for owning a PC?

Sometimes it doesn't really depend on your ISP download speed, it depends on how busy the developer's servers might be. For instance, last night I downloaded an 800+MB file from the Apple Developers website. What usually takes less than 30-40 minutes took over 3 hours because so many people were hitting the servers and the same files at the same time.
So if your download speed is fast via your ISP, remember that things on the server side may be slow or busy: and that's going to take additional time to download.
Just curious as to what your download speed actually is and what size the files were that you're trying to download?

  • Bad itunes movie rental, book, app...can I get a refund?

Over the past few months I've had an itunes movie rental that froze and wouldn't play, a book I bought that wouldn't open (on any device, iphone, mac, or ipad), and an app that I purchased that worked a few times and now quits every time it's opened.
Is there a way to request a refund/credit for these items?

You can always ask but supposedly sales are final.

  • TS4124 ie should icloud allow apple tv to play my itunes movie rentals without itunes being open on my computer

Shouldn't icloud sent my itunes movie rentals to apple TV without my computer open to itunes?

Do I need to back-up all my movies and songs on to a hard drive
Yes. An Apple TV, iPod, or iPhone is not intended to be a backup device and shouldn't be treated as one.
The virus does not allow me to open iTunes, so how can I deauthorize that computer?
You can't. If you run out of authorizations, you can use the Deauthorize All command. Otherwise, you should probably just leave it as is.

Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of the add-ons is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).
    * Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.
    See:
    * [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]]
    * [[Troubleshooting plugins]]
If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.
    * Use "Disable all add-ons" on the [[Safe mode]] start window to disable all extensions.
    * Close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit"; Linux: "File > Quit")

  • My iTunes movie rental is almost up, but it isn't even fully downloaded?

Usually I have no trouble with downloading from iTunes, so I didn't think that it would be an issue to start watching it last night, but for some reason it stopped downloading it.  I tried watching the movie again after school, and it's stuck at the 39:38 mark.  If it isn't done downloading in time for me to watch it before the 24 hour rental period is over, am I just screwed out of the money?  I'm pretty sure at this point that I'm never going to try renting anything from iTunes again.

I imagine this is a bit late for you, but to anyone else running into this problem, try the trick mentioned by VFSchreiber in this thread:
Re: Why won't my iTunes movie rental play or download?
This worked for me when I ran into the same issue (can scroll through rented movie but can't play it).  Just switch iTunes to the MiniPlayer (in the Window menu) and then back to the normal player.  Apparently, you may need to do this a few times. It sounds odd (and I didn't really expect it to work), but it fixed the problem for me.

  • ITunes Movie Rental Playback too dark

I have downloaded 100s of GBs of video podcasts, free TV programs, & other free video content from the iTunes Store since I obtained my Mac Mini (Early 2009 2.0GHz-4GB-320GB OSX.6.6, 'iTunes 10.2 (34)') in 11/2010, and they have all played admirably--no complaints--on my 14 year-old Samsung CRT SDTV (connected via Mini-DVI to VGA and this converter box [http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?cid=101&cp_id=10114&cs_id=1011407&pid=4724&seq=1&format=2]. In fact, ANY video (QT, Flash, Silverlight, etc.) I've played on it has displayed wonderfully...this is mainly what the Mini is used for.
(I should note that the Mini shipped with OS 10.6.3, but when I upgraded to 10.6.4, the overall display had a markedly richer, but darker quality to it--enhanced the desktop & apps' appearance, but (as many on these boards at the time decried) added darkness to all video. I went through convulsions re-calibrating the color using the provided system software, but could never quite get back to the as-purchased video luminance, and had to compromise with a "futzed" calibration. Subsequent OS updates have not changed this).
However, last night, for the very first time--and I've had an iTunes account practically since the iTunes Store opened--I decided to make a real purchase, and rent a movie while visiting some friends. I brought my Mini & cables over, plugged into their similar vintage Panasonic SDTV the same way as into mine: via RCA jacks; had done this before to show it off, and everything displayed fine without a hitch. We also both have FiOS broadband internet. Before renting, everything was great--I showed off photos using the OS screen saver, then played with Front Row, watched a Danish cooking show podcast (quality was near normal SDTV), so, everything was functioning properly.
I went into the iTunes Store and ordered the rental for "Inception" (no HD option, and I have iTunes configured to always play SD quality in prefs). Not five minutes after the download began (it said the 2GB+ file would d/l completely in 62 minutes), I double-clicked on the Inception icon to begin playing, and when the video window appeared, clicked the diagonal arrows to go into full screen. Boy, was this video dark! We might have thought it was intentionally produced that way, but one of my friends had seen the film in the theater, so I knew something was wrong. After half an hour of suffering (could not make out details at all--we were actually missing plot items), I paused the movie, and went into display prefs to try to lighten things up--didn't have time to do a full-blown re-calibration, but I unchecked "Show profiles for this display only" and picked a non-specific profile that was the brightest. It helped some, but at that point I figured I'd never rent from iTunes again...really a waste of $4 (beforehand, my friends were going to get the DVD from Redbox for $1, and told them the $3 savings would not be worth it).
After 90 minutes or so, I attempted to rewind a bit on the Apple Remote (old white version) as I had already done many times--but this time I supposed I held the "back" button too long, and the movie display disappeared completely. "WhaddidIdo?" So, I double-clicked the Inception icon in iTunes Rentals again, maximized to full screen, and was rather confused--the new movie window was SO BRIGHT AND FULL OF PREVIOUSLY UNSEEN DETAIL that I had trouble finding where I had originally intended to rewind to...the difference was so great, it seemed like a different film! "Don't touch anything else now!" my friends implored: "Leave it like that! That's how it looked in the theater."
    WHUHAPPEND?
After the film's end, I stopped it just as the credits began, and went back to watch the beginning again...watched for half an hour or so to get what we had missed in the darkness. Then, being late, stopped it and shut down, intending to watch more of it at home before the file expired this evening. Despite the late hour, I couldn't resist hooking up my Mini at home again and trying it out. BUMMER. I could watch it, but it was back to the "dark ages." All my other videos--podcasts, streaming flash, whatever--all still look great. Just not this paid movie rental.
Any ideas, folks? I sure am skeptical now of purchasing ANYTHING ELSE on iTunes again.
