ITunes movies moved to external hard drive

Hi!
I moved my movies that were in iTunes to my external hard drive since my iMac was running out of space. I have a couple of questions for you:
1. Now that they've been moved, do I delete them from my iTunes?
2. Is it possible to watch the movies on Apple TV from the external hard drive?  When I pull up a movie to watch it says there's an error loading the content.
Thanks in advance!

Thanks to both of you for your help. I am having a couple of problems, still.
1. I can see the movies there on my hard drive. The problem is now that they open only with Paralells. Their file extebsion is .mv4.
2. Some of the files are in my trash.  I can't drag them out because it says "There isn't enough space".
That's what I get for thinking this would be a breeze! I am trying to do a massive delete of over 4,000 duplicate iPhoto pics to free up a lot of space, but no luck so far!

  • How Do I: store my iTunes Movies on an external hard drive?

Since my iMac hard drive space (2 terabite) is almost half-full of the Movies I have in my iTunes, I would like to be able to set up my iTunes to store and play the movies from an external hard drive.  I just bought a 4 terabite G-Drive for doing this.  I would also like to be able to view the movies on my two differant Apple TV's.
If anyone has any information on this it would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    kalton

I have almost zero experience with Apple TVs. I saw one once in an Apple Store, across the room.
    The easy way:
iTunes: How to move [or copy] your music to a new computer [or another drive] - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527
Quick answer if you let iTunes manage your music:  Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive.  Start iTunes with the option (shift on Windows) key held down and guide it to the new location of the library.
    The easier hard way:
You will need delete the movies from your iTunes collection.  Drag them to a folder on the other drive.  Hold down the option key and drag that folder back to an iTunes window. Opton will prevent the files from being copied back to the drive.  Drawbacks: 1) You must remember to do this each time you add an item or it will copy it to the drive. 2)  Deleting it will remove things( metadata) such as ratings, last played, date added.
    The tougher hard way:
Re-assign your media folder to a folder on the external.  Consolidate just the movies to the external.  Re-assign media back to regular location.  Advantages: Will keep your metadata.  Note - I have never done this.
Whatever you do, back up first.

  • Can I export my itunes movies onto an external hard-drive and then remove them from my computer, but still watch them when I plug in my external hard-drive?

I am running out of space on my macbook. What is taking up the most room is my movies. Can I put them on an external hard-drive and then watch them later after I remove them from my library?

On Windows, hold Shift (not alt), launch iTunes and select Choose library... and select the iTunes folder you copied to the external drive.

  • How do I move my iTunes library from my external hard drive back to my computer?

Just wondering how do I move my entire iTunes library from my external hard drive back to my computer? It was moved to an external hard drive a few years ago, and now I'm wondering how to move it back to my iMac to increase performance.
Where does it belong in the computer?
    Any suggestions?

The library itself is the /Home/Music/iTunes/ folder in its entirety. Did you also change where preference files were stored? Normally, they would be in the /Home/Library/Preferences/ folder.

  • I moved my itunes library to an external hard drive and now when I try to sync my ipad it says it is already synced to another library.

I moved my itunes library to an external hard drive and then I tried to sync my ipad.  I got a message that says my ipad is synced to another library and it will erase my ipad, which I don't want to do.   I'm not sure how to fix this problem, any ideas?

    Ok. progress...
So is your media folder called iTunes Music or iTunes Media? And does it have a folder called Music inside it?
Before going any further you should first attempt to use File > Library > Organize Library > Rearrange files in the folder "<Media Folder>" (ignore if grayed out). This will make sure that any iPod Games or Mobile Applications get placed inside the iTunes Media folder which is needed for portability.
If your iTunes Media folder is called iTunes Music, close iTunes, rename the folder as iTunes Media and start iTunes again. iTunes will automatically adjust. Close iTunes again.
On your external drive rearrange the folders that you have already copied there so that they match the layout in your active library. You should end up with a folder called X:\iTunes where X: is the external drive letter, and the media folder is X:\iTunes\iTunes Media. If the library layout was upgraded then you will need to create a Music folder inside this and move all the artist folders and Compilations into Music. You will also need to copy iPod Games and Mobile Applications from your internal drive into the new media folder. Next copy the files iTunes Library.itl, iTunes Library Extras.itdb, iTunes Library Genius.itdb, sentinel and the folder Album Artwork from the internal drive into X:\iTunes. The preceding manipulations should make the internal and external copies of your library match without you having to copy all of the media over again.
Now hold shift as you start iTunes. Click choose, browse to and open X:\iTunes\iTunes Library.itl.
Finally use File > Library > Organize Library > Consolidate files. This will ensure that any stray files that might have been added from outside your original media folder will be copied into the new one.
You can now reclaim the space used by your library on the internal drive, however before you do so I would advise you to obtain another external drive and make use of this backup tip.

  • Can I safely move my iTunes library to an external hard drive, to free up memory?

As an elementary music teacher, I have more than 10,000 songs in my iTunes library.
I also have a lot of video footage of my students' performances.
I need to free up memory and am wondering if there is a safe way to move the iTunes library to an external hard drive, and, if it is safe, how difficult will it be for me to access it from the external hard drive.
On my school computer, one of the "techies" moved that iTunes library to an external drive and ended up quadrupling the size of it, so want to be sure that if this makes sense, that I do it the right way!!!
    Thanks so much!

Can I move those songs to an external hard drive?
    yes.
Will that improve the speed of my computer?
maybe. what is the total capacity of your boot drive and how much free space is left ?

  • ITUNES MUSIC NOT PLAYING AFTER BEING MOVED TO EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE

I moved my itunes library to an external hard drive a long time ago no problem. Now i bought a 1TB to transfer it because i was running out of space on the other one so i transfer the folder itunes music everything went okay. But now when i turn off the other hard drive to make sure my music came to this new hard drive and play it doesn't. Unless i go one by one and find the file in the new hard drive it won't play. So what can i do? I just move the itunes music folder everything else is where it was. I followed all directions i found on the internet they all say just moved the music folder which i did. So where did i go wrong? Any help is greatly appreciated!!

It depends on what you want. If you want everything to be on the external drive, and all of your music is in the iTunes folder now, then you can just drag the entire iTunes folder (the entire folder, not just the iTunes Music folder) to your desired location. Then hold down the Option key while launching iTunes. You'll be given a dialog box where you can select the iTunes library you want to use. Navigate to and select the iTunes folder in it's new location. Everything - playlists, ratings, etc. - should remain intact and all future purchases and imports should go to the new location on the external drive. Once you're certain that everything is working as it should from the external drive, you can then delete the iTunes folder from your internal drive.
Caution, though: once you do this, make sure the external drive is connected and mounted before launching iTunes. If the drive isn't mounted, iTunes will automatically switch back to using the default location on your internal hard drive and will of course show a blank library. This won't be a problem, though; just quit iTunes and relaunch using the Option key and select the folder on the external drive once again.

  • I need to move my iTunes library to an external hard drive

I need to move my iTuns library to an external hard drive in order to free up space on my macbook pro.  I've checked the external hard drive & it is playing my iTunes fine. I've moved the iTunes folder on my macbook to the trash can.  Is there anything else I need to do before emptying it from the trash can?

Sounds like you are OK. Be sure to open iTunes then preferences. Click on Advanced icon in toolbar. Set the path to your media folder in the field where you should see the path to the original location. Or, you can hold down the OPTION key while starting iTunes and choosing the library you wish to use.
This should be it. If all is working well delete the data in the Trash. Now, if it were me I would have a backup somewhere just in case. Better safe than sorry.

  • How do I Play videos from external hard drive on Apple TV2?  Can I just move the iTunes Library to the External Hard Drive?

I have several HD videos stored on an external hard drive and would like to bring them into iTunes and play them via iTunes on my Apple TV2, but I am not sure how to go about it.  I don't want to store the movies on my iMac hard drive because it would eat up to much space...so do I just move the iTunes Library to the external hard drive?  And, if so...will the Apple TV2 find the iTunes Library on the external hard drive?  Thanks for any help anyone can suggest.

iTunes content on an external drive isn't a problem.
The simplest method is to just move your library to an external drive.
If you wanted to keep just movies on an external drive, that's a little more difficult. You'd need to put the movies where you want them to reside on the external drive and add drag and drop them onto iTunes while holding down the option key. Obviously any movies already in iTunes would need moving from their current location and removing from iTunes first.

  • How do I move iTunes library to an external hard drive to use less space?

How do I move iTunes library to an external hard drive to use less space?

Our iTunes guru Terence Devlin advises the following:
    1. Quit iTunes
    2. Drag the iTunes folder from your internal hd - located in ~/Music folder - to your external hd. DO NOT delete the original one from your internal hd... yet!
    3. When the transfer is complete, press and hold the Option(alt) key and fire up iTunes.
    4. A "Choose iTunes Library" window will come up. Click on the "Choose Library" button.
    5. Navigate to where the iTunes folder is located in the external hd.
    6. Within the iTunes folder, select the iTunes Library file and click Choose...
That's it. iTunes will now display all your playlists, songs, movies, podcasts etc. At this point, should you wish, you can delete the iTunes folder from the internal hd to free up space.

  • Files moved to external hard drive - now nothing playing in iTunes...help!

    *Hi guys,*
*Just wondering if someone can give me some advice really. I think / know I've made a bit of a botch up of my files :-(*
*Here's the story - I'll try to be brief...I have done a number of different things to try and sort this mess out and this is the latest...*
*- Laptop storage full, with over 5000 music files saved on it. Laptop unhappy - says needs more space. I try to accommodate.*
*- Already have all music files backed up on external storage drive. Nice. Delete music files in C:/Program Files/iTunes file. Laptop happy - has enough space.*
*- Delete current iTunes music files. Drag and drop music files from external hard drive into iTunes window. Transfers music. No problem.*
*- Add new files to external hard drive - try to update in iTunes. iTunes not happy - shows exclamation marks by most songs, which then won't play.*
*- iTunes only opened with external hard drive connected and working.*
    *- Me now not happy.*
*- Try changing path where library is saved. Does nothing useful.*
*- Only available option is to click on each track and manually locate it. Not fun when there are 600+ files.*
*- Decide to drag and drop files into iTunes window again.*
*- Now ended up with 12000 tracks in my iTunes, half of which are duplicates with exclamation marks that won't play.*
*- Now at end of my tether. Takes hours to move tracks and now using up unecessary room with unplayable tracks.*
*Does anyone know a. where I went wrong (given I've faffed around with it so much...I just want it organised once and for all...) and more importantly, b. what I can do to sort this mess out.*
*Is it actually possible to have all your music stored externally but to have them play through iTunes to transfer onto my iPod???*
*Also, if I used my iPod as a disk drive, and copied the files straight onto there from my hard drive, would they actually play, thus ruling out iTunes altogether?*
    *Many thanks in advance.*
    *Frustrated MP3 wrangler*

*Also...is there any way I can filter out all the tracks with the ! so I can delete the unplaying copies as they're taking up room in my iTunes? I know how to find duplicates, but then I have to go and delete each one individually...*
    *Thank you!*
