ITunes Movies on External HD?

Is there a way to keep the movies you import into iTunes in a separate location to where your iTunes music folder is stored? I.e. Have your iTunes music on your Mac HDD and your iTunes movies on an external HDD?

did you ever get an answer to this question, because I am trying to do the same thing. You can do it in Windows with itunes, so that is weird you can't on a mac.
Thanks and please email me if someone gave you an answer.

  • Moving ITunes movies to external hard drive

I want to speed up my downloading by moving a bunch of my ITunes movies to an external hard drive.  How do I do it?  Should it help?

moving content to an external drive will probably not increase your download speed - but it will free up space on your boot drive.
if your download speed isn't satisfying, talk to your ISP. you can find out what speed you're enjoying by going to http://www.speedtest.net/.

  • ITunes move to external hard drive

I have run out of space on my 2007 Mac and have purchased an external hard drive in order to free up space on my Mac hard drive.  I have moved my itunes library to the external hard drive.  Before I delete the itunes library in my mac hard drive, I would like to be sure that the entire library has been moved.  The problem that I can not figure out is when checking on the storage capacity of my hard drives, the mac hard drive shows 117.91 gb of audio storage and the external hard drive only shows 6.18 gb of audio storage.  The descrepancy scares me.  When I open the external hard drive's library, it all seems to be there.  I have over 70 classical albums, plus another 70 pop/jazz/etc albums.  The first time I moved itunes to the ext. hd, I just dragged the icon.  The second time, I consolidated my entire itunes library into a folder and dragged that over.  It didn't show any change in the external audio usage.  Can some one give me advice?

    Hello metalau,
If you're unable to verify the transfer, I'd suggest following through the article linked below (in the interest of avoiding data loss), as it provides step-by-step instructions for transferring your media to an external drive.

  • ITunes move to external hd fail, want to move it all back

Tried moving itunes to ext hard drive using Apple directions. Didn't work. iTunes library files are still in original location. Can I move everything that transfered to new hard drive, i.e. apps, back to original folder and be good to go? Thx!!

There is also a donate-ware app called iBackup : http://www.grapefruit.ch/iBackup/ which does incremental backups from the second backup onwards. I use it for everything except backing up the whole computer, for which I use Disk Utility "Restore".

  • I moved itunes file to external hard drive and want to move the file on my pc to recycle bin. When I move i get an error message that it cannot delete ituneshelper.dll access is denied. Can I move that file to the recycle bin?

I am trying to free up space on my pc and moving itunes files to external hard drive. I have followed instructions and believe I have file copied to new drive, but I am having trouble moving file to recycle bin as the instructions say. I am getting the following error message: cannot delete ituneshelper.dll:access denied, make sure disk is not full or write protected and file not in use. I know the file is not in use when trying to move. Any help would be most appreciated. I am on Windows XP.

Yes. And you should not have moved that folder. Put it back. To move your iTunes library move the folder from User's Music.

    Hello ryane84
The easiest and most efficient way to copy your music is to follow the steps under the External drive section. Make sure that you have organized the iTunes library first before you copy it over. Then put the copied iTunes folder in the same Music folder on your computer.

  • How to move my external HD iTunes library to my new Mac?

Hi, sorry for a noob question.
I have an older Mac and it's iTunes library location is point to an external HD, now I got a new Mac and I would like to use the same external HD for my iTunes library, so basically the contents in the external HD doesn't need to be move, is there an easy way to have my new Mac recognize my old library? I did temporary try to move my external HD to my new Mac and use the "Choose Library" option on iTunes but it show me an error message "The iTunes library file could not be found in the folder".
    Thanks in advance!

I was able to figure this out. I just copied the iTunes folder from the old mac to the new one and problem solved.

  • How can I put my recently purchased iTunes movies on to my thumb drive and WD My Passport external hard drive. My Mac keeps saying "can't be copy because it is too large for the volumes format

How can I put my recently purchased iTunes movies onto my thumb drive and WD my passport external hard drive. My Mac is saying that can't be copied because it is too large for volumes format

[file] is too large for the volumes format
That is usually an indication that the Volume was never Erased or Partitioned for GUID partition table and Mac OS, and is still in a Windows format.
Mac OS X Extended (journaled) has no such file-size limitations

  • How can I move my iTunes movies from my computer to an external hard drive? After I copy them to the drive, do I just delete them from my computer? How will I be able to watch them again?

    Hi,
I have a MacBook Air (July 2013) with the latest Mavericks OS X. I also have the lastest version of iTunes.
My computer has very little memory left, so I wanted to free some up. When I looked, movies were taking up a considerable amount of space. I want to move them from my computer, but still be able to watch them if I want to later. I haven't purchased an external drive yet, because I didn't know what size to get. I also have a lot of Photoshop files that are taking up a lot of memory, so I might put some of those on too. Would you recommend a 1 TB one or bigger?
Can you take me through the exact process of moving my iTunes movies to the external drive? I understand where to find the files (My Name<Music<iTunes Media<Movies), but am stuck from there. Do I simply drag them to the external drive and then delete them? Will this delete them from my iTunes library? How will I go about watching them again? I assumed that I would just plug the external hard drive in, click in the movie and watch. Is it this simple? I only want to move my movies, otherwise I would follow tutorials for backing up the library. Once you back up the movies, can you delete them from your computer?
    Thanks,
    Molly

iTunes does not have provision for automatically storing one kind of media on a separate drive, so you have some basic decisions to make first.  Do you want these movies to still appear in your iTunes library, or are you content with browsing filenames on a drive in Finder when you want to look for one?  The second's the easiest thing because then you don't have to have an external drive permanently turned on and attached to your computer (wired or wireless).  To do that you literelly only need to drag your movies folder to an archive drive and delete movies from iTunes.  To watch them again you can add it back to iTunes while holding down the option key so the movie is used from its location on the external drive.
There's ways to move the movies to an external drive while keeping them in iTunes but the external drive iwll always have to be turned on and connected to the computer or you will see a bunch of broken link exclamation marks.
Realize what you are talking about is not "backup".  Backup (which you should do) is putting a second or more copy of items on external drives for the day when your internal drive fails and everything on it is lost, inclduing all your home photos and perhaps things that have been pulled from the iTunes Store and can no longer be re-downloaded.

  • Can't update iphone as not enough memeory on computer. Have tried to move itunes to an external hardrive and I thinm it has moved and clicked on the Itunes folder from the external but still says not enough memory..help

Our computer is REALLY low on memory...we will get a new one at some point but can't at the moment.
Upgraded to the new iphone 4s and bought an external hardrive so I could move my Itunes library to that, so I could update iphone/itunes (isn't enough memeory on PC to do this)
I read that I need to consolidate my itunes first but again when I tried to do this it said not enough computer memory.
Anyway I tried to move the itunes folder over to hardrive and then it looked like it had worked. Clicked on itunes via the external and it opened ituens up..brilliant I thought!Backed my old iphone up and then clicked update...then a m,essage came up saying not enough memeory on comouter to update.
Is this because i need to delete itunes off the computer?
Am worried in case it isn't on the hard drive correctly and will lose everything!

You would be better off to go through and uninstall programs you no longer need or use and move your data over to the external drive, at least temporarily. The iOS update file will be somewhere around 700MB. If your system has less than 20% free disk space, you're pushing the limits even without trying to download something that large and back up your phone so the update can process. If you're running less than 10% disk space you've entered dangerous waters no matter what you're doing.
This really isn't iPhone related and we can't advise you as to what data and applications you can move or delete. You will have to make that determination yourself or get a friend or family member to help.
If you do not have a current backup of your computer system, you need to make one. NOW!

  • Moved iTunes Library to external drive- now can't move iPad purchase to Mac

I moved my iTunes Library to an external drive because I didn't have enough internal HD space to move a movie purchased on the iPad to my Mac. Now iTunes won't sync my iPad - and wants to reformat it - because it says it was formatted on another Mac.
I've tried Aiseesoft iPad Manager but the movie - a iTunes+ movie, so I assume it is a package of some sort - doesn't show up in the movie pane.
This is a really crappy position to be put into. If I could re-download the movie I'd just reformat my iPad and be down with it. Unfortunately, this is not an option.
    Help!

As a best practice, you should move your content to an external drive and import references to into iTunes rather than moving the whole database and app files. In iTunes > Preferences > Advanced, uncheck "Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library". This will keep all your music and movies on the external drive, but iTunes and all references to the content on your desktop.
I know that's not what you wanted to hear as a fix, but this is how I have my MacBook Air setup and it works fine with the iPad. My son tried to move the whole app and database to a hard drive and we had endless problems with it.

  • ITunes movies moved to external hard drive

    Hi!
I moved my movies that were in iTunes to my external hard drive since my iMac was running out of space. I have a couple of questions for you:
    1. Now that they've been moved, do I delete them from my iTunes?
    2. Is it possible to watch the movies on Apple TV from the external hard drive?  When I pull up a movie to watch it says there's an error loading the content.
    Thanks in advance!

Thanks to both of you for your help. I am having a couple of problems, still.
    1. I can see the movies there on my hard drive. The problem is now that they open only with Paralells. Their file extebsion is .mv4.
    2. Some of the files are in my trash.  I can't drag them out because it says "There isn't enough space".
That's what I get for thinking this would be a breeze! I am trying to do a massive delete of over 4,000 duplicate iPhoto pics to free up a lot of space, but no luck so far!

I just bought a MBA and I need to move my photos and itunes to an external hard drive (from my old MacBook Pro) because they won't fit on the Air.  I got the photos moved fine and I followed an online tutorial to move the necessary files for itunes, but it didn't work.  The files copied fine, but when I tell iTunes on the Air to look at the external drive for the library, it doesn't find anything.  What I copied was the entire iTunes Media folder.  So, how do I move the necessary iTunes files from my old Pro to a external drive so I can access them from my new Air?  Whew!

iTunes- How to move the library to an EHD
After you move the library you need to open iTunes by first depressing the OPTION key then launching iTunes. You will be given a choice of which library to use. This can then be made a permanent change, if you wish, in the Advanced section of iTunes preferences.

  • ITunes 11 - Get Info greyed out for movies on external drive

With iTunes 10, my itunes movies and TV shows grew to about 1.2TB of data, and I shifted them to an external drive.
I was able to edit the information via 'get info' until upgrading to iTunes 11.
Now all the information, bar the 'five stars' field are greyed out. If I shift a particular movie back to the internal drive, I can edit (genre, for example). Shift away again, get info greys out.
Any advice? It feels like iTunes thinks it has the wrong permissions.

When you add a movie to iTunes you have to make sure it makes a copy of the file in the iTunes Media folder.  Otherwise, you can't edit any of the information on the movie or video.
In iTunes 12, go to Edit-->Preferences
In Preferences, go to Advanced and make sure the "Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library".
Unfortunately, you will now have to re-import the movie files into iTunes using "Add File To Library..." Once imported, the movie will sometimes appear under "Home Movies" instead of "Movies" but if you right click on the movie file it will list a menu item called "Get Info" where you can change the "Options" to "Movie".
    Hope that helps.
