ITunes movies won't play after backing up library

I recently ran out of hard drive space on my macbook pro so I decided to move my iTunes library to an external hard drive to make space. Since doing so the movies that I bought on Itunes won't play. Everything else is fine. The music plays but the TV shows and movies won't play. There was an error message the first time that I tried to play it but I have never seen it again and I didn't write it down. Something about a file missing. Has anyone successfully fixed a similar problem?

iTunes prefs - Reset warnings.
Double click a movie to play it.
When it comes up and asks if you want to locate it, click Yes, then go to /iTunes/iTunes media/Movies on the external and find the movie.

Movies won't play after update to iPhone 2.1 Software

Help. I updated my 16GB iPod Touch with the iPhone 2.1 software to support applications. But now, when I go back and try to play my mp4 and m4v movie files on my iPod touch, they won't play. When I try to play them I get a warning that says "this movie could not be played". Videos I purchased from iTunes continue to play just fine.
Is this a new anti-piracy thing or something like that or am I having a problem with the iPhone 2.1 software? If I knew I wouldn't be able to watch my old movies and TV shows, I wouldn't have upgraded to 2.1.

Just a quick update on my issue... which seems different than most. To summarize, I tried updating from iTunes 10.6 directedly via USB. Got an empty progress bar when it "rebooted" after "successfully updating" to 5.1 with a memory allocation bar on itunes showing most the memory as allocated to "other", instead of the usual memory allocation to apps, music, pcits, etc. Rebooted the phone, but still came up with an empty progress bar, but would connect to itunes.. showing booted as 5.1, but again the memory was still allocated to "other". Started recovery process on itunes to try to bring back my old config, after which the iphone fully booted (into 5.1), but was completely.... recovered and re-installed all my apps, music, etc without a hitch and rebooted successfully, this time the memory allocation was correctly labeled, but somewhere I gained 2.0 GB of memory, even with all the same apps and music installed. I had to do some minor additional configurations (password lock had to be re-enabled), but otherwise, everything was working. A bunch of apps lost their stored settings... which I though strange as I expected the "backups" to store those settings as well. Otherwise, running 5.1 now without issues... seems much snappier than 5.0.1... but the process was nerve racking to say the least.
Best of luck with other "explorers" tyring to make the whole process work.

New iTunes Movies Won't Play in Front Row

I have tried contacting support and the local store but all I have found out is that Frontrow isn't supported anymore though lack of interest.
I found that all my old movies still play in Frontrow but all but one of recent downloads from iTunes just plays audio with a black screen.
The Apple suggestion was to download a third party programme to replace Frontrow.
Apple mentioned XBMC and Plex appears to be an alternative.
I haven't tried any alternatives and would be interested to know if anyone uses these and if they are easy to use without being a computer programmer. Also do they work with the white remote?
New iMacs don't even come with a remote.
I mainly use my iMac as a multimedia centre and was building up an iTunes movies folder, even though the movies can be more expensive.
The recent movies still play directly from iTunes but having to start the movie from the iMac seems a really backwards step.
Support claim that my problem is uncommon and they don't have a fix.
I am using Snow Leopard. By the way Lion doesn't even include Frontrow.
This appears to be really stupid of Apple and has stopped me buying movies from iTunes. One of the features that set iMacs apart from PC's is their out of the box setup with remote access to your media.
Get your act together Apple and fix this problem!

I was annoyed when I saw that Apple killed support for FrontRow too. I'm not sure why they would do this, I liked to use it all of the time.
Plex and XBMC are certainly good alternatives and is probably what you'll want to use to replace FrontRow. (Plex would be my first choice:) )
Another suggestion might be to get an Apple TV to solve this issue. I'm assuming you used FrontRow while your computer was connected to a TV or monitor. An Apple TV has the same sort of interface as FrontRow and would surely play your iTunes Movies.
I kinda hope they bring it back in the future :/

ITunes Movie won't Play on iPad

I have the iPad Wi-Fi + 3G 64GB
When Star Trek came out on DVD, I bought the Blu-ray 3-Disc copy that had a free Digital Copy download from iTunes.
This copy would play on my Apple TV, but not my iPhone... Now I have loaded it to my new iPad, and it won't play on it. It tells me it can't be played on this device.
Can anyone help me out here?

That's correct for me - It syncs just fine. I can even open the main movie menu on the ipad, see all the movie info, chapters, and everything. Just when I go to play it I get the error "This movie could not be played". I had a similar problem with Wall-E (bought directly from itunes store - not blu ray digital copy). But for whatever reason, that issue resolved itself. Princess and the Frog is locked down, though. I've tried resyncing, syncing manually versus automatically, etc. No Luck. This movie plays fine though itunes on my TV.
Any thoughts?

Some QuickTime movies won't play after 10.4.4 upgrade

Hi,
I recently upgraded to 10.4.4 and now some QuickTime movies - mostly from Safari won't play any more. I do online training and none of those QuickTime movies will play. They load perpetually. They also work fine on my other machine (which I haven't upgrade from v10.4.3 yet)
According to System Profiler, I'm running QuickTime 7.0.0 - but I can't find 7.0.1 in the Apple downloads section. I'm not even sure if that will help.
Any ideas?

Most current version of QT is indeed 7.0.4, but Apple has removed that update and instead posted one that backs 7.0.4 back to 7.0.1.
Apple is now passively recommending against 7.0.4

Itunes movie won't play on apple tv from ipad

I am having trouble playing a movie on apple tv that i purchased on my ipad

Ok nw the rented film is on the iPad which won't play and when I looked at the Mac I was greeted with an error message saying that the film could nt be transferred because the file had already been transferred somewhere else! Thing is I can see it on theioad and the Mac still!
Obviously the film Kees checking where it as you can't watch it in two places at the same time. I can understand that but I knw it's not anywhere else.
The only thing I can think of is if when time machine backs it up it thinks it's being watched!
Any ideas anyone?

Movie won't play after renaming in iTunes and on iPod if iTunes crashes

So new MacBook Pro, new 80 5G iPod. All up to date.
I can rename my movies files with about 80% success, 20% of the time I get the spinning beach ball of death. iTunes hangs and I force quite (probably a bad idea) now the files, either on the iPOD or in my library, are unplayable. If I try to open them in Quicktime (Pro) it says there was an "Error opening File, the Movie could not be played"
It looks to me like iTunes is corrupting the file when it tries to rename the file. Any one experience this as well or know how to fix the files? I've tried fixing permissions and repairing the disk in Disk Utility.

I've noted that the beach ball clears if I wait for 1 hour.
I've also noted that it is much faster to rename the movie files themselves in the finder, the next time I play the movie in iTunes the name changes.
I've noticed several other messages about the spinning beachball of death. In case anyone is wondering don't force quit iTunes least you corrupt the file.

My iTunes movie won't play on my iPhone.

I have three movies that we're purchased through my iTunes account, but they're not actually downloaded on my phone, they're over iCloud, so they should play over wifi. I went to watch one of them, and at first the movie window popped up and then went back to my page of movies. I tried it again today and it does the same thing, but a little window pops up and says "Operation Stopped. The server is not configured correctly." Any ideas?

Movies won't play after upgrade

After upgrading my system to OS X 10.4.10, the movies I downloaded will not play in iTunes. Double-clicking the file name, or selecting "play" from the controls menu does nothing--no error message, just inaction. There is no exclamation point in the file name, and the files are located where preferences say they should be. Purchased audio files all play ok, only the movies don't.
I can select the movies in the Quick-time player and they do play that way, but not within iTunes.
Any ideas?

Problem solved. I downloaded a Quicktime upgrade, and the movies now play.

Rented movie won't play after 8 minutes in.

I rented a movie on my iTouch yesterday, then when I played it it stopped at 8 minutes 42 seconds and wouldn't play anything after that. I was determined to watch the movie so I rented and downloaded it again, it did the same thing. So today I synced my iTouch to my computer, updated it, tried the movies with the same problem, and rented the movie AGAIN via my computer. The movie did the same thing AGAIN! I'm soo frustrated! If anyone can help please do!!! I'd like to add that I rented a different movie and watched it the day before and it was fine, so I don't know what's going on with this movie!!

Movies won't play after downloading 2.0 software?

Yesterday I figured out that apps i purchased weren't working because I hadn't had the most recent software, so I downloaded 2.0. Before doing this, I had purchased a movie from itunes on my PC, which worked perfectly until i tried it for the first time after having the update. Every time I try to play the movie on my ipod touch (1st gen), a pop up comes up that says "This movie could not be played." Help Please?

ITunes videos won't play after 10.8 upgrade--checkerboard pattern

On my Mac Mini (mid-2009) connected to an LG TV, after upgrading to Mountain Lion, all purchased videos on iTunes play audio but display a gray/white checkerboard pattern instead of a video. The same happens when I try to play the videos in Quicktime.
Someone else posted a similar problem here -- https://discussions.apple.com/message/19104312#19104312 -- but my problem doesn't seem to be the same (a conflict with Edovia's TouchPad app). I do, however, connect to this Mac Mini through Screen Sharing, and perhaps there's a VNC conflict going on. Just to be sure, I turned off another Edovia app, "Screens," on my iPad, but the issue remained.
iTunes will happily play non-iTunes-store videos. Also, I'm able to stream the iTunes Store videos from the Mac Mini to my MacBooks (running Mountain Lion and Lion) and iPad without any problems.
Thinking it was a DRM-related issue, I disassociated all devices and computers from my iTunes Store account and then reconnected them. No joy. I repaired disk permissions. No luck. Lots of restarting.
Has anybody else run into this? Possible solutions? It's driving me batty.

I am having this exact problem, however, it's only video content I download from iTunes. Anything that I've imported into iTunes, from alternate sources, will play just fine.
This seems to be a Quicktime problem as I have found that when you attempt to play iTunes files in Quicktime player, the same grey and white checkerboard pattern appears.
I am using my MacBook and MacMini in the exact same way. I am hoping there is an update to fix this probelm ASAP. This was my media center.

DVD Movies won't play after 10.4.10 / DVD Player 4.6.1 Updates...

CDs will boot fine, blank DVDs will mount fine, but when I insert a DVD movie; the drive won't mount and the DVD player will not play my discs. I currently have a Pioneer DVR-109 installed in my PowerPC G5. Any information or help please.

IT DEFINITELY IS A TIGER ISSUE... here's a little workaround... although in a tricky way, i got my commercial dvd's to finally play. do the following and let me know if it will work for you as well.
-insert a movie dvd (commercial)
-when told that the disc is not readable and prompted to eject or ignore hit ignore
-you will not see the disc mount on your desktop
-open vlc and hit play. choose "disc" for destination and hit okay (don't try with apple's dvd player, IT WILL NOT WORK)
-you will now see the movie title in your playlist, select it and play it... it works!!
good luck and until we find a permanent fix we can still watch movies on our macs! BTW, i used vlc 0.8.6c for this test on 10.4.10. incase you're not familiar with vlc, it's a free video player and you can download it from number of places on the internet.

I downloaded the iTunes 8.1 upgrade; a few days later, I redeemed my digital copy of a movie and it took forever to download and will not play--there is a gray screen instead of the movie. Help!

Past iTunes purchases won't play after last update

Since the last Apple and/or iTunes update, the majority of songs I purchased on iTunes now have a red square with a thin red circle around it next to the song and will no longer play. I've tried resyncing but it didn't work. I've got close to 1700 songs in my library, but only a couple hundred will play. I've checked the forums and have tried the various suggestions, but nothing has worked. In fact everytime I try to fix the problem, more red squares appear.   I really don't want to do a factory reset. What's up with this and what is the permanent fix?

Compatibility Flag was all 0's and I double checked the Value and it was definitely 0
I am not aware of any malware found by either MBAM or ESET. How should I check that?
