ITunes moving songs to wrong iTunes Library Folder

Hi All,
Just upgraded to 10.1. I have my iTunes library on an external drive. Upon upgrade to 10.1 iTunes created a new iTunes Library Folder on my internal drive (/iTunes Library/Music) and moved 103 of my 8000 songs into that new folder. I've never had or needed that folder before. I have iTunes set to both manage my library and copy songs to my iTunes music folder (correctly points to the external drive in iTunes). So every time I try to add these 103 songs to iTunes, they do not get copied to my external drive library folder, they get re-copied into the internal disk folder that iTunes creates and iTunes will not play them (get the exclamation point). Even if I try to trash the internal iTunes Library folder, iTunes just automatically recreates it and adds those same 103 songs back in. If I copy/paste the songs into the external library and add them to iTunes - iTunes moves them back to the internal drive and will not play them! Some of the songs are purchased from iTunes, some are not. Only 1 song is DRM protected and some but not all songs are iTunes plus upgraded songs.
Anyone have any idea why iTunes might be behaving this way only with those 103 songs?
Thanks!

Hi I am having similar problems.
I recently bought an external hard drive that i wish to run my music and itunes library off of, i have an ipod and iphone 3gs. I am having problems with it not updating the apps in the folder i have a designated and sending all updates to a newly created folder (which i have deleted) in the c drive being music in an itunes folder, But i want it to go to the external hard drive. My itunes importing and all files have been moved to this external hard drive. itunes is being completely run off the external being installed on there as i thought that might be why its creating this folder on the c drive, with itunes library.itl, itunes extras and genius.itdb, and itunes music library.xml
Can anyone help me would be greatly appreciated thanks

  • Itunes moved songs to trash

i was having problems with my ipod , lost music that wont appear. the ipod dosent even show on the desktop . so i was trying a data recovery program and was running itune at the same time . the data recovery wasnt working so i quit , and then my itune started having problems so i forced quit and when i reopened itune no song , ive later found out theyve moved to the trash but i cant move them back out of the trash and also somehow the desktop is now in the trash as well which i cant move either . i think my ipod has given my laptop a virus which would explain the ipod and now ive infected the computer

    Michael,
Can you explain what happened better? What you are saying does not exactly make sense.
    1) Your iPod does not show up on the desktop when connected if you have a PC. Only if you are running Mac OS X...
    2) Your iPod did not give your PC a virus. Your iPod's data is on your computer, so your computer would have had to have one, and either way, I doubt your iPod was involved.
    3) You said that your desktop was in the trash. Your desktop cannot be in the trash...
Are you on a mac or pc? Some things you say seem like Mac OS X, others Windows XP. Mac OS X is not as succeptable to viruses, so I doubt that is what happened.
Finally, how did you loose the music? If the iPod was not appearing, that's one thing. But if the music was still on the iPod, it wouldn't be lost. Where was the music prior to starting data recovery?

  • I moved songs within my iTunes media folder and now my iPod can't find them

Hello.  I have a few albums in my iTunes library that organize the artists by such folders as Artist feat. So-and-So.  This makes it difficult to scroll through artists on my iPod and in my car.  So I moved those songs that are in those folders to their corresponding album folder under the original artists' names.  Now when I try to sync my iPod it tells me that those songs cannot be found.  I completely restored my iPod and tried again after unchecking the following, but it still couldn't find the songs.
Convert higher bit rate songs to X kbps AAC
    Keep iTunes Media folder organized
Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library
Luckily I do still have the original CDs and can delete the albums then restore them, but I find this particular feature to be pretty ridiculous.
Can anyone help?  Thanks in advance!

The Macintosh has something called "file aliases" which allow you to move files from their original locations and applications that reference those files will still know how to find them. Windows does not have anything like that. It works off of full path / file names. So, when you moved your music folder and all your music in Windows Explorer, iTunes is still pointing to the old location.

  • Moving songs from one itunes account to another

    Hi,
When my ex and I were together we had one iTunes account which we loaded all our cds on to.  We have now separated and I have created a new iTunes account linked to my iphone.  I still have access to the old account which my ipod nano is currently linked to.  How can I move my music from the old account to my new account?  I still have the cd's but I have just bought a ipad and have no cd drive to burn them.
Would appreciate any help on this.
    Thanks
    Kate

Anything that you download from the iTunes store is tied to the account that downloaded it, they can't be moved to another account.
If it's music that was copied from CDs then they aren't linked to an iTunes account (unless you've subscribed to iTunes Match and uploaded them to it), if the only place that you have copies of them is on your iPod then you should be able to copy them back - there are some programs listed half-way down this page which should be able to do that : Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device

  • Moving songs around in itunes playlists

I cannot move songs around in my itunes Playlists. what setting do i need to change so i can do this?

Click on the header bar for the numbers column on the extreme left. It should change colour and a little triangle should appear.
Now you can move songs around to different positions.

  • ITunes purchased song plays in iTunes but not on iPod

I have purchased several songs from the music store. One of the songs will play in iTunes but not on my iPod. I've removed the song several times from the iPod and resynced with iTunes, but the song still cuts out in the middle of the song. What should I do?

If it's just a problem with that song, I would contact the customer service who may authorize another download.

  • Itunes asking for the wrong Itunes account for app updates

I have a buddy who is attempting to update his iPad apps, but it's asking for his daughter's itunes account password instead of his.  His account is synced to the ipad, and daughter can't remember her password.  What can be done to resolve this issue?

Ther reason that iTunes requires her password, is because the apps were purchased with her iTunes account/Apple ID. That's how it works. All purchases are tied to the Apple ID that was used to make the purchases and your friend will always need to use her ID and password to update those apps.
There is no way around this other than for your buddy to delete the apps and purchase them with his own Apple ID,

  • Artwork for iTunes Plus songs

Hi. My iTunes Plus songs don't come with album artwork and I can't seem to add artwork to them. When I open the artwork viewer on the bottom left-hand side of iTunes it says "Album Artwork Not Modifiable", and when I try adding artwork by going to Get Info it doesn't work either. Is this happening to anyone else? Maybe Apple didn't include the artwork feature in their iTunes Plus songs or something.
    -Eric

yes, I know that all iTunes songs are supposed to come with artwork (in fact, all my iTunes purchases that are not iTunes plus have it), but my iTunes plus ones don't for some reason. In fact, as I said above, I can't even add artwork to them because the Get Info tab says that "Album Artwork Not Modifiable". I can modify any other info for the songs (like the comments field, genre, album, grouping, etc) and I do have read/write permissions for the song files and the folders they are in. Also, all my iTunes plus purchases are upgrades (I had the 128kbps DRM versions before), and before I upgraded, the artwork was modifiable.
One more thing: I just noticed that I can't add lyrics either. I can put them into the lyrics field, but they don't stay there (I put them in, press OK, then Get Info again later and they're not there).
These two problems (can't add artwork and can't add lyrics) happen with all my iTunes plus songs.
    My iTunes plus purchases are:
Beastie Boys - Ch-Check It Out
Beastie Boys - So What'cha Want
    Coldplay - Speed of Sound
    Coldplay - The Scientist
Roxette - It Must Have Been Love
The Rolling Stones - Waiting On a Friend
The Rolling Stones - Start Me Up
The Rolling Stones - Beast of Burden
The Rolling Stones - Miss You
The Northern Pikes - She Ain't Pretty
Nat King Cole & Natalie Cole - Unforgettable
    Heart - What About Love
The Beach Boys - Surfin' USA
The Beach Boys - Wouldn't It Be Nice
    The Beach Boys - Kokomo

  • ITunes 9 Genius not updating - iTunes Store Error

Using iTunes 9, I am trying to update my Genius so that I can have the Genius Mixes however it seems to always be stuck on "Sending information to Apple…". I've let it run for 3 hours with no success and twice have had it say the there is an error with the iTunes Store. It doesn't seem to be sending anything as there is no bandwidth use.
Anyone else having this issue or know of a fix?

  • ITunes saves dropped songs to wrong folder

Because of the size of my MP3 ad WAV music collection, I store my song files onto a SAS RAID array instead in my user's Music folder.  The path to this folder ls "/Volumes/Audio Storage/Music".  This has worked fine for quite a while, but I've built a new Lion system for audio work and things have gotten odd.
My starting settings in the Advanced section are both Keep iTunes folder organizaed and Copy files off.  I then drag and drop the folder into the Music panel of iTunes and after a few minutes, all 50K± songs are imported.  I then go into preferences and eable Copy Songs for any new music.  Last night I imported Fr/action's entire library and the import succeeded, but this morning I noticed that the songs had been imported int9o a new Music folder within my specified folder - "/Volumes/Audio Storage/Music/Music".  While doesn't present a problem with playback or logically managing the collection, I'm curious as to why iTunes added the new folder instead of just copying the new group / album / song hierarchy into the defined folder?
Is this a bug, or am I missing some setting?

  • My iTunes is moving the songs I play to another folder

I've had my music organized in a folder on an external drive in the same way for years and never had an issue even after changing laptops.
I've recently bought an iMac and have been successfully transfered my iTunes library, been listening to and adding music just as I always did.
I just discovered that every song I play is automatically being moved to a "Music" subfolder inside my own media folder on my external drive. This is happening only when I play a song, the songs I add to my library are going into the correct folder.
I am not sure if this started occuring before or after I switched to the iMac. I have checked and rechecked my preferences and nothing looks out of place.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

  • Moved itunes library folder

i moved my itunes library by mistake. i've learned that if the folder gets moved, itunes will create a new and EMPTY library the next time it is opened. well, this has happened to me. is there any way to restore the old library back into itunes? email me [email protected] thanks..
      Windows XP

These steps may work for you (you have a Mac and you are in the Windows forum...)
If you want to make another drive (direct or portable) on your PC the main music location for iTunes, move all song files there, as well as any future imported music from CDs, here is one method (see the links below):
You will maintain your playlists, ratings, comments, etc. This will only move your music folders location, NOT your iTunes program files or the Library database files. It is my opinion that programs (i.e. – iTunes) work better when installed on your main hard drive. At the very least, it makes it easier to manage all your programs if they are centrally located on one hard drive (the Windows default standard).
See these links for some step-by-step info:
iLounge: Moving your iTunes Library to a New Hard Drive
MacMuse: iTfW: Move iTunes music/Library to new drive
iTunes: Moving your iTunes Music folder
If you are moving the music to an external hard drive or network drive, after the transfer (and to work correctly), the drive must be running prior to your opening iTunes. If not, iTunes will reset the location of your music folder location to the default location (usually: ‘C:\...My Music\iTunes\iTunes Music’). If this happens, you need to manually change the path back to your external location, or future CD ‘Imports’ will be deposited on your internal HD.
Also make sure that the new drive always loads as the same Drive Letter, otherwise you will lose the references within iTunes.

    Hello there, gleab.
The following Knowledge Base article reviews the ways to import content into iTunes:
Adding music and other content to iTunes
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1473
Also keep in mind which formats can be added:
You can add audio files that are in AAC, MP3, WAV, AIFF, Apple Lossless, or Audible.com (.aa) format. If you have unprotected WMA content, iTunes for Windows can convert these files to one of these formats.
