ITunes moving to new HD - How to keep Library and Playlists

Old HD was too small so bought a bigger one. Prior to the purchase, I had already move my music to my external HD, doing the consolidate process - everything was working fine. iTunes was on my C drive in the usual doc & settings\sylvain\my music\itunes. My music was in I:\data\itunes.
I have partitioned my new HD in C (System), D (Programs) and E (Data); I have also named my system Family during setup (as oppose to sylvain); I have loaded iTunes on my new HD in D; I have all the files from my old C drive (copied on my extrenal HD); I still have my external HD, now G. On my old HD I had iTunes 7; on the new one I loaded iTunes 8.
How/what do I do to have all my songs/library back as well as the playlists I had?

Some points to consider:
i) The ITL file will be useful if-and-only-if you place your music folders/files in the *exact same spot* (Drive and Path) as it was when that ITL file was created. Having the XML file is also important.
ii) You have an archived ITL file from iTunes7 and are now using iTunes8. This may or may mot be a problem.
First thing to try is:
a) Remap your ExHD from G: back to I:
b) Make sure your music files are in "I:\data\itunes" as you had them before
c) With iTunes closed, and the re-mapped ExHD attached and on, place your saved copy of the V7 ITL file into the folder that the new (blank) ITL file resides that V8 is using.
d) Open iTunes - if you are lucky, it will read and convert the older version ITL file and find all your music as well as Playlists and other metadata
If successful, you can then Consolidate the Library from the ExHD to wherever you want it to be on the new PC's HDs. Or keep the Library on the ExHD. At least make and keep backups of the music and database files.
If the above does not work, then post back and additional help can be provided.
Best of Luck

  • Computer crashed- all new now. How to bring library and playlists from Ipod

My PC crashed and was pronounced DOA. All library and playlists were and still are on Ipod Classic (20GB). Obviously wasn't able to follow directions for normal transfer of lib. and p.lists as event not planned. Built completely new PC and loaded up Itunes. I had all my music library backed up on an external and can load, but is there any way I can save my 50 meticulously created playlists back into Itunes? Please say "Yes"!

Other free programs are Pod Player, SharePod and Floola.
If you want to recover just the structure of playlists from the iPod (and not the actual song files themselves), there's iRepo for Windows. which I understand has this feature along with all the standard features for these programs.
iPodRip also has the feature enabling you to reconstruct playlists.

  • How to Restore Library and Playlists to Newly Wiped Hard Drive

Due to Windows problem, I had to reformat my hard drive.
Before I did, I copied the entire My Documents folder, including My Music and the iTunes music files and the My Playlist text files to a second hard drive - the D drive - in the same tree structure as they existed on the C drive.
I do NOT want the music files on the C: Drive - I want the music files on the new D: storage drive. I want iTunes on the C drive but knowing the music files are on the D drive.
I installed the iPod disc onto the newly cleaned C: Drive and downloaded iTunes ver 6.
Now I would like to have my iTunes library and playlists back just as they were but I am confused over the ADD FILE and ADD FOLDER commands.
Add Folder appears to copy the full music files back to the C Drive, which I do not want.
Add File appears to add the meta data, the library list, and
the playlists to iTunes, but when you go to play a track, the program says it cannot do so because it can't find the music file. To tell each track the new location of the music file listed means I would have to edit over 1200 line items -- even though I already told the program where the
    music files would be.
Before trying to add the library and playlists as files, I went into EDIT, Prefences, Advanced and changed the iTunes folder location from
    c:\mydocuments\mymusic\itunes\itunesmusic to
    D:\mydocuments\mymusic\itunes\itunesmusic
Earlier I had used the Add Folder option and it copied all the music files to the C: drive. I had to delete them and
    try something else.
What must I do to transfer just the meta data and keep the actual music files on the D drive?

The XML file is less important (See the link that Katrina provided above).
First re-install the iTunes program (if you have not already).
Make sure that the music folders and files are copied to the exact same location they were in prior to the PC Restore. If they were running on the C: drive, you'll need to place them there at first, then move them within iTunes.
Then copy the original ITL file you saved into the 'iTunes' folder, replacing the newly created (and smaller) ITL file that was created when you reinstalled iTunes.
Open iTunes and the Library should be as it was prior to the Restore.

I have had itunes library to go away and itunes create a new one. how do I get my old one back?

    Hello,
Did you delete the library ?
If no, press the Option/alt key when you open iTunes and you should see a message and be able to choose a library.

  • After copying iTunes folder to new PC how do I restore its original library

I have two PCs, each with iTunes on it.
The newer PC has number of tunes that I've purchased from the iTunes Store. It has no playlists.
The older PCs has a large library of Cd-ripped music and numerous playlists.
I want to copy the old PC's library and playlists over to the new PC.
I understand that I can simply copy the iTunes folder from the old PC to the new one and the files and artist folders will be merged fine. Doing this will also replace the itunes.library.itl and "itunes music library.xml" files so I end up with my old playlists on the new PC.
But at that point I suspect iTunes on my new PC will no longer show its original library of files because its original itunes.itl file was overwritten.
How do I get iTunes on the new PC to add those missing tunes back into its library?
      Windows XP Pro

Well, this is a helpful group.
I ended up conducting a test.
I copied the entire iTunes folder from the old PC to the new PC. The music folders simply merged with the existing ones so no music was overwritten except for tunes that existed on both PCs.
Afterwards, iTunes on the new PC showed all the old PC's tunes in the library and all of its playlists. Missing from the library listing were the tunes that had been on the new PC.
But using "Add Folder to Library" to have iTunes rescan the iTunes Music folder added back the missing tunes. All tunes that had been purchased on the new PC and were therefore licensed to that PC still play without any DRM probs.

  • I want to move my ipod touch plus itunes to a new computer, how do I do this to ensure that I do not lose all my music

I want to move my ipod touch plus itunes to a new computer, how do I do this to ensure that I do not lose all my music?

    - iTunes: How to move your music to a new computer
    - iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to a computer
    - Copy/move the iPod backup file from the old to new computer.  That file is located here and you may have to have show hidden files turned on.
    Mac: ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup/
    Windows XP: \Documents and Settings\(username)\Application Data\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\
    Windows Vista and Windows 7: \Users\(username)\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\
    - After all the stuff in on your new computer, restore the iPod from backup.

Quick answer if you let iTunes manage your music:  Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive.  Start iTunes with the option (shift on Windows) key held down and guide it to the new location of the library.

  • I keep getting a message that itunes incorrectly tried to run the C runtime library and now itunes won't work anyone know how to fix it?

My computer keeps telling me that itunes tried to incorrectly run the C runtime library and now I can't get into it, I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling it but nothing is working

Go to Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs (Win XP) or Programs and Features (later)
Remove all of these items in the following order:
    iTunes
    Apple Software Update
Apple Mobile Device Support (if this won't uninstall move on to the next item)
    Bonjour
    Apple Application Support
Reboot, download iTunes, then reinstall, either using an account with administrative rights, or right-clicking the downloaded installer and selecting Run as Administrator.
The uninstall and reinstall process will preserve your iTunes library and settings, but ideally you would back up the library and your other important personal documents and data on a regular basis. See this user tip for a suggested technique.
    Please note:
Some users may need to follow all the steps in whichever of the following support documents applies to their system. These include some additional manual file and folder deletions not mentioned above.

I am trying to move my library and playlists to a new computer by burning to CD's. However, I followed the directions by going to File and then Library - then they said to go to burn CD(s) - I DO NOT have that option for some reason. How do I do this? I have done the library sharing thing but I am getting rid of my primary computer and am afraid I will lose the library.

To move an iPhoto Library to a new machine:
Link the two Macs together: there are several ways to do this: Wireless Network,Firewire Target Disk Mode, Ethernet, or even just copy the Library to an external HD and then on to the new machine...
But however you do choose to link the two machines...
Simply copy the iPhoto Library from the Pictures Folder on the old Machine to the Pictures Folder on the new Machine.
Then hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library'
and select the Library that you moved.  That's it.
This moves photos, events, albums, books, keywords, slideshows and everything else.
Your first option didn't work because you imported one Library to another. Every version and thumbnail is imported like a distinct photo, you lose all your Albums, Keywords etc., the link between Original and Previews is destroyed, the non-destructive editing feature is ruined and so on. In summary: it's mess.
Your second option didn't work because you simply referenced her library on the old machine.

  • How do I connect my library and playlists to iTunes 10 on PC.

My computer crashed. Luckily I had my extensive library and playlists on external drive. I have a newer PC now with Windows 7. I have tried to download a version of iTunes 10 but I am uncertain of how to connect them. I have made a link with my Library on my external drive and then dropped the library into the Music title on the iTunes window. It took a while to catalogue, making up album playlists, and then a window appeared saying "iTunes has stopped working." I doubtlessly did something wrong along the way. I would appreciate it if someone could help me out of this predicament and set me up in a working iTunes 10 that will take my my playlists and iPod Nanos 6th and 7th gen. I'm willing to start from scratch.
