ITunes Music on an external Drive

I am trying to setup Itunes on a PC using an external Drive. I'm using windows 7. I created the Itunes library on my office computer and in the preferences area I saved the folder to the external drive.
When I brought the folder home I directed Itunes on my home computer to look for the folder on the external drive but I can't get Itunes to read the library.
When I look at the folder on the drive I can see all the music but I just can't get Itunes to read the folder. I created the folder in windows not my mac and the drive was formatted for the PC not a mac.
Can anyone please tell me how I get windows to read the library from the external drive. PLEASE HELP.

File > Add folder to library and select the top level folder with music on the external.

  • ITunes Music Files on External Drive

I have an iBook and am running short on internal hard disk space primarily because of a large number of music files (~24GB). I would like to move all my music files to an external disk to free up space on my internal HD. How would I do that with iTunes and make sure any music I import or download/purchase goes to my external hard drive?

Interesting thing happened when I moved all my iTunes folder files to the external HD. Even with the EHD connected, iTunes did not display my music library. I had to import the music files from the EHD. Then I found that iTunes had placed the Album Artwork, iTunes Library database file and iTunes Music Library.xml file in the default location on my internal HD even though the path in iTunes Preferences links to the EHD. Now when I open iTunes the library displays but the actual audio files are on the EHD. I'm wondering where a purchased, downloaded audio file will go. What's up here?

  • Was able to transfer itunes music from an external drive to a computer, but cannot listen to it without external drive being connected. There are "!" next to the transferred music.

Was able to transfer itunes music from external drive to computer, but they won't play. There are "!" marks next to all transferred songs and a message reads "Unable to locate songs". How do i get the transferred songs to play without having the external drive connected.

Select a single song with a broken link, press CTRL+I to Get Info, cancel when asked to locate the track and take a look at the Summary tab. Post back where iTunes is looking for the file. It begins file://localhost
    Where is it really?
Please post back both paths so that I can make suggestions. Full paths please, exact spellings, you can replace your user name with <User> if needed.

  • How do I back-up Itunes music onto an external drive?

I wanted to know how I can back up my Itunes onto an external drive. I tried to back up but it will take about 9 discs to burn it onto. Can;t I just drop and drag all the songs onto an external drive?

"Choose Consolidate Library from the Library section of the File menu in iTunes".
I started this process and a screen popped up advising me this was irreversible and was I sure I wanted to do it. I clicked no until I could get further advice. If I do this, what is the outcome/consequences and why would they warn me?

  • Itunes music saved on external drive, now have new system.  How to get itunes to see my music

I have been saving my tunes on an external disk.  I now have a new system.  I went in to edit->preferences advanced tab and changed the Itunes Media Folder Location to my external location.  I've done this before and seem to remember doing something else but can't remember what.

You need to learn how to type in "external drive" into the search box of the Support pages on this site for iTunes. Once you learn that you will find nifty articles such as this one...

  • My macbook pro logic board died. I had all my music on an external drive. How do I get my iTunes library, playlists etc. from my dead computer onto my new one?

My logic board died on my old macbook pro. I have a new one, but I want to get my iTunes library off my old hard drive and put it on my new one. I had set up my old MBP to store all my iTunes music on an external drive, so I have the music. The iTunes program was on the old MBP hard drive. How do I essentially recreate my previous iTunes library, playlists, etc on my new laptop?

You will need the iTunes Library.itl file which generally lives in ~/Music/iTunes/. You can recover this from the backups you were making before the HDD died. Otherwise, you cannot recreate the library.

  • HT203167 Moved huge music library to external drive...now iTunes cannot find it

My massive music library was taking up all the room on my hard drive, so I moved everything to an external drive.  I then deleted the library from my hard drive.
The music is located in a folder named "iTunes Music" on my external drive.  iTunes cannot locate the songs now.
I've changed the media folder in preferences to: volumes/externalharddrive/iTunes Music and it still won't play the songs.
I've also tried selecting "Get Info" by right-clicking on a song, then manually directing iTunes to song.  It will play that individual song, and asks me if I want to use the folder to find other songs.  I click "Yes", but it's still not working.
Any ideas?  I've searched these forums and I'm stumped.
    Thanks!

Our iTunes guru Terence Devlin advises the following:
    1. Quit iTunes
    2. Drag the iTunes folder from your internal hd - located in ~/Music folder - to your external hd. DO NOT delete the original one from your internal hd... yet!
    3. When the transfer is complete, press and hold the Option(alt) key and fire up iTunes.
    4. A "Choose iTunes Library" window will come up. Click on the "Choose Library" button.
    5. Navigate to where the iTunes folder is located in the external hd.
    6. Within the iTunes folder, select the iTunes Library file and click Choose...
That's it. iTunes will now display all your playlists, songs, movies, podcasts etc. At this point, should you wish, you can delete the iTunes folder from the internal hd to free up space.

  • How can I move my iPod iTunes Music Folder from C: drive to a New Drive?

Running out of space on my PC's C: drive, so I tried moving all the folder to my new E: drive ie: (E:\My Music 2\iTunes).
ALSO set iTunes (Edit/Preferences/Advanced/iTunes Music Folder location to E:\My Music 2\iTunes - but nothing seems to help!)
All of the files couldn't find the source files, unless I pointed to them one by one.
Can't move them all back because they are about 7GB+, and I now only have about 5.5 GB on my C: drive.
And when I just went to open iTunes again, all my libraries don't even show.
I'm afraid to plug in my ipod for synching until I get this straight, for fear of messing that up too.
    Please advise.

To move your iTunes music to an external drive...
    1 Quit iTunes.
2 Move the entire iTunes folder including music to
    the external drive.
In point #2 do you mean move the entire Program File folder of iTunes or just the "My Documents" iTunes library folder?
I have a full laptop, a big iPod and an external HD, I am trying to figure out how to store my library on the HD, but access it as if it were on the laptop.
I moved my iTunes library to the HD and then in iTunes I used the "add folder to library" function, but it brought all of the song files back onto the laptop.
How do you iPod gurus configure your setup with comp, HD and iPod? I need some guidance, my methods are not working.

  • Should I have my iTunes library on an external drive?

Just curious if I'm better off running all my iTunes music on an external drive as opposed to on my internal C drive? Same thing with iMovie project files? I thought it would be easier for the computer to access if it's on the internal drive, but someone told me I should put everything on an external. I'm confused. My external drive is USB 2.0 but whenever I try to access it after it's been dormant for a while I get the spinning beach ball until it's up to speed so I didn't know if that drive would slow things down. So I'm assuming that would be the case with iTunes music. But I know it's silly to assume. Anyway, all thoughts on the matter are appreciated.

I don't think it really makes a difference speed wise if you run your itunes off an external hard drive. Just be careful that you update your directory for itunes to point to the external. If you download any updates to itunes it will automatically reset your folder to point back to your c-drive. The best thing to do is to uncheck to selection to automatically update itunes software so you are not caught off guard with the updates resetting your itunes folder directory.

  • How do I consolidate backed up music from an external drive into itunes?

I had to replace my ipod and am trying to consolidate my old music from an external drive with the itunes library on our home computer. My gf has music there already. I have tried consolidate library, edit/prefereces/change, copied my music in itunes folder BUT nothing works. iTunes just will NOT pick up/recognize my music. Any ideas will be much appreciated. cheers

Consolidate takes what is in the iTunes library (what you see when you open iTunes) & copies it into the iTunes music folder as shown in iTunes prefs - > Advanced.
If you cannot see the songs when you open iTunes, you need to File -> Add folder to library and select the folder with your music.

  • ITunes Music on an External Hard Drive

Sometime ago I put, or as you will see, thought I'd put, all my itunes music on an external hard drive, I used the instructions as outlined on the Apple website, and it all SEEMED to work fine, except that when I choose "organise library" or as it used to be known "consolidate", itunes copies about 300 or so tracks and thats it, but I have over 10,000 songs, vids and podcasts. Also if I go into Spotlight/Finder, there are a lot of iTunes files on BOTH the external hard drive AND in the itunes folder on the INTERNAL hard drive, now I'm worried about copying one from the other in case I lose some stuff, any ideas?

  • HT1751 Just installed itunes on my new computer.  My music is on an external drive.  How do i get newly installed itunes on new computer to recognize the music on the external drive?

I just got a new PC, thank goodness.  All my music is on an external drive (F).  i installed Itunes on my new computer.  Now want to get itunes to recognize all the music on my external drive.  Don't want to put music on new computer, but keep on external drive.  Can anyone help me - thanks

Was the media solely on the external library?  If so, it is likely that iTunes was started at some point with the external drive unaccessible.  Simply point iTunes to the correct library location.  To do this, close iTunes.  Hold <SHIFT> and launch iTunes.  When prompted to find library or create a new one, select the find option and point iTunes to where the iTuneslibrary.itl file is at on your computer (or external drive).
