ITunes music on external FW HD - new mac

I have my iTunes music on an external Firewire Hard Drive - I connected a new Mac to it and I want the new Mac to access the iTunes music folder - I directed iTunes to the new location for the music, but nothing shows up in iTunes. I reflexively clicked "no" when Mac OS asked me if I wanted to consolidate the music library - my bad, I work on Windoze for a living, and it's just a habit to blow away those messages - so my question - how do I get iTunes to consolidate the library on this new Mac? I can't get the OS to consolidate again.

Ignore this post - I figured it out - copy iTunes Library from old Mac to flash drive and copy to new Mac (Home folder - Music - iTunes) - it's working - sorry for wasting anyone's time.

  • Restore/setup iTunes music on external HD for new computer?

I'm sure this question has been answered somewhere, but all the web sites and discussion threads search here seem to have slightly different processes or seem to be solving slightly different problems, so I want to ask afresh to ensure I get this right!
I'm in the process of getting set up with a new Mac. With my old Mac, I stored all my iTunes music on an external HD, and I want to set up my new Mac to access the same music (I'm not planning to use the old mac to access this music any more).
I've got the external HD with with a big pile of music, and I've got the "iTunes Library" and "iTunes Music Library.xml" files from the old Mac. It seems to me that I ought to be able to convince iTunes on my new machine to use the saved "iTunes Library" and "iTunes Music Library.xml" files, and point itself at the music files on the external HD .... but I can't quite figure out the process, and I really don't want to screw it up!

Yup, that seems to have pretty much worked. There must have been some strangeness in my iTunes Library file, or he accompanying XML file, since though all the songs were listed, some of their info was out of date (e.g. a number of tracks that had been AACs, since replaced by Apple Lossless, were initially listed as still AACs -- but playing the tracks caused iTunes to realize that the underlying file had been replaced with an Apple Lossless file, and then it was OK).
I'm going to keep a complete back up of the whole iTunes things, music files and library files, together on yet another external HD from now on!
    Cheers,
    Carl

  • Can't get my iTunes music from old PC to new Mac through iCloud.  Can't I just log in to iCloud to see music?

I mave iCloud set up through my new iPhone 4S.  Yesterday I got my new macbook and I can't get my iTunes to transfer to my new mac from my old PC using iCloud.  Are you supposed to be able to do this?

From things you are saying, such as "shared folder" and having both machines on, it doesn't sound to me like you truly moved the whole iTunes collection.

Quick answer if you let iTunes manage your music:  Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive.  Start iTunes with the option key held down and guide it to the new location of the library.

  • Transferring iTunes music from external HD to new iMac

I've searched and read and still am a little confused, so apologies ahead of time for asking yet another transfer music question.
I had to do an erase and install of Leopard onto my iMac Intel; I've since performed a software update and now am running iTunes 9. My iTunes music is still on an external HD back-up.
Can someone be kind enough to list the steps needed to transfer my iTunes 8 library from the external HD to the iMac's iTunes 9 while maintaining playlists, album cover art, etc.? I also have some other music (mp3s) in a separate folder (user/Music/allofmp3) that I need to transfer over as well.
    Much thanks ahead of time!

If you only backed up your iTunes music and not the entire \Music\iTunes\ folder, you have no playlists, album cover art, etc.

  • My old computer (a Sony) with my iTunes crashed. I have a new MAC and want to make sure I can keep all of my music (mostly from old CD's that have been lost). I bought iTunes match hoping that would work but it isn't using the data on my phone. HELP!

Since you have purchased a new Mac (which, BTW, is not typed in all capitals) why not buy a Time Capsule <http://www.apple.com/airport-time-capsule/> which is designed specifically to work with OS X and Time Machine?
You don't say what part of your Sony "crashed." If it was not the HDD it is possible to take the computer apart, put the HDD in an external case, then recover the data off of it (including the music) simply drag-n-drop. If it was the HDD that "crashed" that makes it more difficult.
If you are able to recover the music from the Sony you can then add it to the iTunes library on the Mac and iTunes Match will then scan, match and upload the tracks to be mirrored in the cloud.

  • Want to use external drive for new Mac, fresh iTunes

So I recently got a new Mac and have not transferred any music to it yet. In fact I haven't even launched iTunes. I want to store all of my music and play it from an external drive. I have found articles detailing how to transfer your library from your internal drive to an external one but I don't have an internal library of music on this machine. How do I set up iTunes to play from an external library for the first time? And how do I add my backed up music from my previous iTunes to that external drive's new music library? Do I just drag the files into the folder and hope iTunes will recognize them?
    Thanks!

okay, i had to collect my thoughts for a moment
... but I don't have an internal library of music on this machine.
is *this machine* the new Mac ?
How do I set up iTunes to play from an external library for the first time?
the files will have to be added to iTunes. however, with the correct settings, they can be put straight on the external.
in order to set up iTunes on the new Mac, you will have to launch it. with the external drive mounted on your new Mac's desktop, go iTunes > preferences > advanced and point +iTunes media folder location+ to the external. this will cause iTunes to put all newly added content in that location.
also on the advanced tab, check +keep iTunes media folder organized+ and +copy files to ... when adding to library+.
And how do I add my backed up music from my previous iTunes to that external drive's new music library?
did you back up the music to disk ? if so, you should probably authorize iTunes with your iTMS account details, then just pop in the disk(s) and add the content to your library.
if you have backed up to an external HD, use the +add to library+ command from the file menu and navigate to the folder containing your media files.

  • Hi, can anyone tell me the best way to transfer my everything including itunes a/c to a brand new mac, thanks

Hi, can anyone tell me the best way to transfer my everything including itunes a/c to a brand new mac, thanks

Hello i recently transfered to a new mac and i have it perfectly figured out so first off dont use migration assestant if you don't want to get your old computer exactly on your new computer.  In my opinion starting on a fresh computer is best, BUT you still want your files so i have a video you can watch if my instructions don't make sense.
    1. Go to finder and find your music folder
    2. click the folder labled itunes
    3. click itunes music or find the folder with all the folders in it that have names of artist or albums
    4. then select all those folders with the artis or album names with commant A this will select all those folders
    5. then drag these to and external hard drive or connect to your old mac from your new mac wirelessly to find these folder
    6. if you did wireless sharing option just drag all those folders to the itunes icon if you used an external harddrive find the folders on there and do the same.
    7. any questions please reply watching video will help.

  • Transfer iTunes files from external drive onto new iMac

I had all of my iTunes files on an external hard drive with an old eMac. I want to transfer the files to my brand-new iMac.
It's easy to copy the iTunes Library folder from the external drive onto the iMac hard drive, and change the preferences so that new songs are stored onto the iMac, but it doesn't change the settings for iTunes. Then, if I "Add to Library" I get two copies of everything: the file that's on the external drive PLUS the file that's on the new iMac. If I delete all of the "old" duplicates, it will mess up my playlists.
Isn't there an easy way to point iTunes to the new Library on the iMac and have it change the location setting for all of the songs?

okay, let me rephrase my question:
when you moved your files from the old Mac to the external, did you
    (a) drag the entire iTunes folder from <MacintoshHD>/users/<yourname>/music to the external
    or
    (b) use the +consolidate files+ command to move the files to the external
if (a), connect the external to the new Mac and launch iTunes while pressing option on your keyboard. when prompted, click on +choose library+ and select the iTunes folder on the external.
if (b), copy the iTunes folder from <MacintoshHD>/users/<yourname>/music on the old Mac to <MacintoshHD>/users/<yourname>/music on the new one, overwriting the iTunes folder in place there. connect the external to your new Mac and fire up iTunes normally.
if you want to move the media files from the external to the internal disk of your new Mac, go iTunes > preferences > advanced and point +iTunes media folder location+ to the iTunes folder in <MacintoshHD>/users/<yourname>/music. also on the advanced tab, make sure there is a tick in the boxes next to +keep iTunes media folder organized+ and +copy files to ... when adding to library+.
then file > library > organize library > consolidate files. this will copy all your media files to the location you specified earlier in the advanced tab. when done, you can (if you want) erase the external and use it for other purposes. or keep the files there and use the external as your backup.

  • I dragged my ext. HD iTunes backed up folder into my new mac. Now there are duplicates of every song!! The problem is both versions seem to actually BE there when I check the info. Now I have no idea if iTunes is playing the files in the trash or not

Hi. I'm in a situation here and would really welcome some guidance. I dragged my ext. HD iTunes backed up folder into my new mac. Now there are duplicates of every song. Both versions seem to actually BE there when I check the info. So, I moved what I thought were duplicates into the trash from iTunes, and resigned myself to the fact that I would have to do this manually for each album. I did this with about 10 albums. I emptied the trash and lost them even though they still LOOKED like they were in iTunes. I repeated the process tonight on a bunch of other albums not realizing yet that I had screwed up terribly the first time. This time I saw what had happened and pulled the files out of the trash, onto my desktop and dragged them back into iTunes, then deleted the duplicate files that had exclamation points next to them. Now I have no idea if iTunes is playing duplicate files from the trash or not, and am nervous about emptying the trash. Anyone dealt with this before? Thank you

    Maybe, maybe not.
Get more information about your computer. Go to the Apple in the upper left corner of any window, then "About This Mac", then "More Info..."  Copy and paste the information here, but omit the serial number and Hardware UUID (if present).
For full iCloud you need 10.7  But the question really is, do you need all the things it does?  I mean really?  Oh, you don't mention if this question is in conjunction with some device you own. To whom and how are you transferring files?
