Itunes music slows down randomly during play

First, my system specs.
CPU- AMD Phenom 9850 Quad @ 2.51ghz
RAM- 2GB Adata ddr2 800
GFX- ATI 4870 Radeon pci-e 500MB
SFX- Creative X-Fi Sound card
HDD- 80Gb, 250Gb, 500Gb, all sata2. (the 500 has all my music files)
OS - Windows XP SP3 (It was doing the same thing in SP2)
Itunes version 9.0.2.25 (version upgrade didn't fix)
I have gone through and upgraded all the device drivers to be recent (in december). I've been dealing with this problem for a little over 8 months now that I can remember, and the driver upgrade didn't seem to help.
Now the problem is that itunes is what I use to listen to music since it syncs with my ipod. But, this only happens in itunes (and recently on my ipod) not in windows media player or in winamp (or media player classic if I just play one song).
It happens randomly. Some songs will play without a hitch a dozen times without a problem. Then I'll come back the next day and the song I was listening to the other day will slow down in the middle of the song. At first I thought it was distorted, but after it happened once or twice, I figured out that the song itself slows down dramatically so that the pitch is dramatically lowered. So much so that certain higher pitched long notes will sound like one long awful bass note. This will continue for a few seconds (it varies. Anywhere from one second to several seconds, up to at one point 10 seconds.)
Sometimes moving the song backwards by clicking on the progress bar will fix it. This hasn't always worked though. Some songs seem to stay distorted and only fix themselves randomly. This is especially true on the ipod, where it seems a slowed-down song stays that way indefinitely. Admittedly I don't listen to the ipod as much so I may be off on that since it happens so infrequently. Though there are songs that play slowed down every time on the ipod (there is a messhugga song that keeps doing it only on the ipod for instance).
It should be noted I don't run anything in the backround of windows. Here is a list of my task manager while running itunes.
system idle proccess
system
svchost.exe
svchost.exe
svchost.exe
svchost.exe
svchost.exe
svchost.exe
svchost.exe
spoolsv.exe
smss.exe
services.exe
lsass.exe
explorer.exe
csrss.exe
winlogon.exe
wscntfy.exe
itunes.exe
Processes: 18
I do run a game pretty often (and listen to itunes as a backround) and I do browse the internet using firefox, so add to that list WAR.EXE and firefox.exe. Whether these are up or not does not seem to matter. The songs slow down with them up and with them closed.
My 500GB HDD has 60GB of space left on it, but erasing/cleaning up the disk or defragmenting it hasn't seemed to help. My itunes library has 55.90 (8940 songs) in it. Cleaning up the library and removing excess duplicates didn't seem to fix the problem. I did move the library from the 500 to the 250, but moved it back when the same thing happened after a few days of playing music.
My RAM doesn't max out, though 2GB is a bit low these days. The WAR.EXE process uses .800-1.4gb (800,000-1,400,000k) of RAM, and the rest of the processes seem to keep well under .400gb max total. itunes stays around ~.064gb (64,984k). And remember, firefox, warhammer online, and the rest running at the same time doesn't automatically cause the slow down. And it slows down whether they are both up or neither are randomly (I listen to itunes sometimes for long periods while reading or painting). I also replaced my RAM fairly recently (other stuff went bad) but the same problem persists.
Lastly, this has happened on my ipod. The problem is that it seems permanent on the ipod, whereas the itunes on my pc will correct itself (seemingly) the ipod version will not correct itself until I sync the ipod.
I have completely removed itunes twice (as well as gotten rid of the registry entries and loose ends using CCleaner). I have deleted the itunes libraries and let itunes create brand new ones. I have upgraded to the most (at the time) recent version of itunes. The problem persists
I may be missing something. I hate using winamp and windows media player, so I haven't just stopped using itunes. But the real problem is that it is so random it's nearly impossible to test. I've tried several different methods of fixing this without tearing down itunes and re-coding it And every time, I THINK I've fixed it only to have it happen again within a week. Hence why this has been a problem for well over 8 months now. It's a small enough issue that I'm still listening to music without loads of problems, but it is a persistent, if infrequent, annoyance.
ANY help you guys can offer me would be greatly appreciated, though I'm not holding my breath since the problem is so weird. But I am willing to try anything if it might work. I can only try them out till they don't work, right?
Thanks ahead of time.

  • Intermittent Slow down lag during play of any game

I've encountered the same "lag" in several games. The instances where I've experienced the lag has been in steam applications, L4d2, CS:S, torchlight and also in non-steam games like minecraft.
I thought it might have been a page out issue, but my page outs have remained at 0.
It's like from the moment the games are launch they begin to destabilize.
Sometimes it only takes 30 seconds other times I can enjoy the game for 15 minutes or more then they just implode.
I have not noticed this behavior in any other application that is a non gaming app. (like photoshop or chrome)
Has anyone experienced this behavior while gaming on OSX Snow Leopard?
My hardware is a late 2008 MBP uni running osx 10.6.5
    2.53 ghz core 2 duo
    8gb ddr3 ram
recently reformatted and installed Snow Leopard

I am having a similar problem as you. Any games I play, whether through the internet or one I have downloaded onto my hard drive, they have been lagging after a varied amount of time being open. Like you said, sometimes it is 30 seconds and other times it is 15 minutes, but once it lags even the slightest bit, it just keeps going. Also, when I try to watch anything online, movies, youtube, etc. I find that I can watch a couple of clips and then the video will start lagging as well. I have reset my router, my internet, and even tried removing most of the games off of my computer. Nothing else lags except for video and games that I have installed on my computer. Just wondering if you managed to fix your issue or not.

  • ITunes gradually slows down whilst transferring music

I have restored and done all the usual things to the ipod. However with a newly restored ipod, i start transferring music over, then about 40% of the way through the transfer (no matter how many tracks, in this instance 222 and this starts at 95) it slows down immediatly. And i mean slow down to about 4 - 5 mins per track. It looks like it is transferring the music but so slow that it would be quicker to go out and re-buy all the music on CD, re-import it and then burn it all onto an MP3 cd.
Any ideas what could do this? It only happens on 1 ipod, my other and my iphone is fine.

  • Is itunes Music slowing my powerbook down?

My itunes currently has around 8000 tracks, is this the problem that keeps making my powerbook freeze and makes other applications slow. If so how do i overcome this problem?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
iTunes will only make your machine slow if it is open and doing computation such as encoding or decoding MP3, MP4, H.264, or MPEG-1 files. See my FAQ* for possible causes of slowing down:

and come back once you think you might have the cause.

  • Could itunes be slowing down my computer?

My Mac mini has been running sluggishly (taking time to respond to movements of the mouse & keyboard, etc). Someone suggested running the activity monitor in the hope of discovering what the problem could be. I've done so, and the only thing I notice is that when I'm playing music on itunes the %CPU stat is something like 50 or 60%. Is this normal? Could it be the source of the slow down? If so, what do I do about it?

I guess it depends upon what iTunes is doing.  The newer versions have become so bloated with Genius, Ping, iTunes Store, Match, etc.  My version 7.5 uses 6% of my dual CPU when playing music and I am running a 10 year old Mac.

  • New iTunes/Quicktime slows down my computer

I'm working on a Powerbook G4 1.5ghz with 512 ram, running 10.3.9. Since installing it this afternoon, my system has noticeably slowed down, causing the spinning beach ball to come up more than often. Other applications are slower to load, and even some songs in iTunes have been involuntarily pausing while I scroll through my library. (and at the very least, scrolling through my library leads to a spinning ball). When's the patch coming out, Apple? And yes, I made sure to verify my disk permissions and restart my computer. (And don't get me started on how my Powerbook takes longer to start up now.)

Do you have a lot of temp files (each 15 Mo) created
by itunes on your "my music" folder on "my document"
on you c/ hard drive ? It appears in my case that my
computer is slow because for each song itunes created
theses files. I don't why and wait a reply (I post
    another topic on this subject).
Like I posted before, this is almost always the result of your virus scanner. Those temp files happen because you virus scanner grabs the files before iTunes is done with them. Stop your virus scanner from scanning that directory or those files and your problem will go away.

  • Ipod shuffle dose not show up in itunes and slow down my computer

hi i can see my ipod shuffle in my computer as removeable hard drive not my ipod name anymore and also i can't see my ipod in itunes at all and every time i connect my ipod shuffle it slow down my computer (very slow) and use my CPU 100% all the time my other usb hard drive(not ipod) works fine its only my ipod i also try to use all my usb port but its still the same thing.
and it can't be my windows because i have just reinstall windows 3 days ago
can someone help me fix this

I think I can add a bit to this problem.
My iPod stopped working during the first use after running the iPod Updater 2005-11-17. When a button is pressed both green & amber lights up.
When plugged into my computer, iTunes (vs 6.0.1.3) does not recognize it is there. Naturally, I tried to run the updater again (2005-11-17 version) and the program hangs. It does not use up the cpu though (~3%). Eventually, after ~5-10 min the updater recognizes there is an iPod and then the restore button can be pressed. However, soon after the updater gives the error "Firmware update failure. Disk write error"
I reinstalled iTunes and the iPod updater as well as tried to use the new updater (2006-01-10) and same error. I am in the process of checking the drivers now. But I still don't know what is causing this error...

  • Music Slowing Down?

I've had my Ipod Nano 2GB for about a year.
Whenever I go jogging, the music seems to slow down noticeably. It's never done this before so I wonder if I changed some speed setting by accident or it might just be getting old.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.

I have a problem with books playing at a reduced speed on nano 2Gb. Anyone any ideas? Could it be because it's quite full and the processor just can't coe with all the stuff it has to deal with?

  • Why is the new ITune update slowing down my pc.

I recently updated ITunes...It now comes with a helper exe.  Why did this change...It has slowed down my pc something terrible... I am running Microsoft Windows 7 64 bit..and never had this problem before...
Seems I need the helper exe to access ITunes now...I do not like updates that decide what runs or doesn't run....Is there a solution to this. I have one apple product it is an IPad mini...If it wasn't for the fact that I have purchased music and apps.  It would end up in the garbage...That is how upset I am...
If this is a way for Apple to make me want to buy their products it will not work...
I have absolutely no problem with the ITune store on my IPad...just on on my desktop.

    Hi theresa62,
The resource below explains the processes that are involved with the iTunes software installed with Windows 7.  It's possible to use your iPad mini without the corresponding iTunes software on your Windows computer .... but it would limit what you can do with it.  You can't sync your iPad with your computer, use iCloud services, etc. without the software.  The choice is totally up to you.

  • ITunes music files will no longer play

    Hi,
I have recently transferred my iTunes library back from an external hard drive to my native iMac hard drive. I kept the original iTunes music folder on my iMacs native hard drive so thought this would be simply a case of resetting the folder under the advanced preferences tab; however I now cannot play any of the music. (I have also reformatted the external hard drive as have just set it up as a Time Machine)
    Any help - much appreciated

My library draws from a folder containing the music files. I delete files from that folder often
Don't delete files from that folder.
Delete them from iTunes and let iTunes delete them from that folder.

  • Tempo of music slows down after a while when using IPod Shuffle

I started running with my IPod shuffle,
and I noticed this glitch, that everytime that I go running,
after a couple of minutes (5-10 minutes), the music starts slowing down,
and let me say that the battery was full when this happened.
    help please?

I think so, This IPOD is not exercise friendly, I had exchanged my earphones twice, and used a set of earphones without the controls, after 20 min in a run the thing just stopped, I charged it before I left, I think this is a moisture problem.

  • Itunes is slowing down my computer by writing ID3 tags

What are ID3 tags? Itunes seems to be slowing down my computer and is becoming very slow to respond to commands because it says that it's "writing ID3 tags". This just started yesterday. I've been using Itunes for a couple of months.

"hyjack".... a perfect word.... I can't operate any of my programs when it's writing these tags.
Mysteriously it stopped yesterday. There might be a correlation between me shutting my computer down - figuring it needed to reset. Yesterday Itunes was working perfectly.
So try the "old problem solver" ..shutting your computer down when you go to sleep.... a full rest....or shut it down for a full ten minutes. See if that works.

  • Satellite A500-17X - Games slow down if I play on battery mode

    Hi
When my laptop (Satellite A500-17X) is plugged in, the game I play (Call Of Duty 4) works very nice but if I try to play the game while my laptop is on battery the games slows down. If you know what I mean.
Is this supposed to happen because the graphic card doesn't work well when the laptop is on battery or is something wrong with my laptop?

    Hi
As mentioned my Syntax, Windows power management decreases the performance of some devices like GPU or CPU using battery mode.
This helps to safe the battery power and to increase the battery working time
Furthermore your cooling modules dont run with full performance using battery and this would lead to a higher internal temperature which could slow down the CPU and GPU as well
So connected the AC adaptor or change the settings in power management but you should note that this will decrease the battery working time dramatically.

  • Is it just me, or is the iTunes Store slowing down?

Seriously. Does anyone else notice that download speeds are getting slower? I do...

I just bought all of the season of Psych since all the HD seasons are on sale for $16 including the current season. Downloading the first episode alone which is just under 2GB i going to take 89 minutes today
Again it's Sunday though, most likely a high volume day for iTunes so slow speeds are going to happen.
