ITunes + NAS + Backup

Hi
I have a Iomega ix2-200 2TB NAS network storage where I backup all my data from all of my computers. I setup this device to be the most safe possible including electric protection and redundancy storage. I know that this NAS offer support to Time Machine, AFP and other protocols.
My problem is that I realize that all of my backup from my 2 iPhones 4 and my iPad 2 are storage in only one of my computers, the one that I use to sync my devices.
I have lots of apps, files, contacts and some media that I definitely would like to save in my NAS and not on the computers. How can I setup my iTunes to sync my mobile devices from my NAS and not from de computers?
Conclusion, I don't want my files (including the encrypted ones from iTunes such backups) on the computers, but I want them all centralized and storage in my NAS. Is it possible? How can I do that?
Thanks

i'm not aware of any way to change the default location where iTunes stores the backups of your iDevices.
however, you might be able to use a 3rd party app such as ...
SyncToy
SyncToy 2.1 is a free application that synchronizes files and folders between locations. Typical uses include sharing files, such as photos, with other computers and creating backup copies of files and folders.
... to make regular backups of the folder to your NAS.

  • HT1229 How to move iPhoto Library to a NAS backup?

How do I move iPhoto Library, which is now stored on a separate backup hard drive, to a new LaCie 2Big NAS backup? My iPhoto library is large, 73GB, and I have kept it on a separate 250GB backup up hard drive connected directly to my iMac; the iPhoto Library is not in my Pictures folders, as is usual. The 250GB is full, and I now want to store the iPhoto Library on a new LaCie 2Big NAS backup hard drive.
I assume I could move the Library back to Pictures folder on the iMac, so that the Library is stored on my iMac, and then it would be backed up on LaCie, but I would rather not take up all that space on the iMac. How do I store it on the LaCie? Usually to move iPhoto Library, you locate it, and then drag to new location. The LaCie does appear in my Finder. Should I drag and drop it?
I asked LaCie support, and they said the following:
If you do intend to place data on the share that needs to be accessed directly by an application on your computer (such as iTunes or iPhoto), however, then you might want to check with support for the software application itself for advice on the best way to accomplish this. It is important that such an application is able to locate the files once you relocate them to the NAS drive, or else the program will not function properly.
I want to access the Library through iPhoto. The LaCie is not connected directly to iMac, but instead connected via ethernet to my Airport Extreme.
    Suggestions?
    Thanks,
    Armando

I experienced the same frustration when i bought my Iomega NAS (which I do not recommed by the way).
I wanted my iPhoto library to be stored on it, thats the main reason i bought it.
But as you have discovered the library connot be stored on a non Mac formatted disc.
So I began to store my photos in a logical folder structure (based on events) on the NAS and access that folder structure from some other software (Adobe bridge).
The PC users in my household could therefore also access this folder stucture and view all the photos. Bonus.
I wasn't satisfied though. I wanted to use iPhoto. Location, Faces, Events, simple editing, etc.
So I created a new iPhoto library on my Mac and then went to iPhoto preferences / Advanced and UNTICKED the 'Copy items to the iPhoto Library'. This creates what I think is called a reference library. This kind of library has some pros and cons but for me it is all pros.
Then simply drag your file structure from your nas into iPhoto and voila. All your photos and any home movies are added to iPhoto but accessed from the NAS.
I continue to add new photos into the event based file structure on the NAS and then drag the new folder across to iPhoto.
This also has the added benifit in that you don't need iPhoto to view the photos (PC users)
This method works perfectly for me. Enabling me to use iPhoto AND my NAS.
    Hope this helps.

Its not entirely clear what it is you want to do. You can't actually "merge" backups; each back up is a snapshot based function and a discrete file. Some of these articles may help, you could could pst back with a little more detail about what you want to accomplish.:

After "Restoring iTunes Library backup" it wont link to the files in the iTunes folder. I've followed the procedure as described, and the iTunes folder is in the correct location. iTunes lists all my music correctly (albeit with no artwork), but can't locate any of the files.
I've been restoring my iTunes folder from a backup hard drive to a new computer on which I've downloaded the latest iTunes (10.7). If this is a newer version than the one I backed up with could this be the problem? (I had the latest (to my knowledge) iTunes when I backed up the folder about 3 weeks ago, was this version 10.7?)
Or is the version of iTunes (within recent updates) not an issue when restoring a library?
    Using Windows 7.
    Any help please?

From the top of the page where the scripts live...
The general method of use is to download the script to a folder of your choice, e.g. your Desktop, Downloads folder or create a folder at ...\iTunes\Scripts. Select a playlist or highlight some tracks in iTunes and then double-click on the script to execute it. If no specific tracks are selected the script will try to work with all tracks in the current playlist. Some scripts offer a choice of track by track confirmation of changes or fully automatic processing of the selection. Many of the scripts can optionally display a progress bar while running.
You are strongly advised to backup your entire library, or at the very least the iTunes Library.itl file, before use. Test the behaviour of your chosen script on a small group of files first to make sure it does what you want before applying it to large numbers of files.
Most builds of Windows will execute *.vbs scripts when you double-click them. If that doesn't happen then you might need to visit the Add/Remove Programs or Programs & Features control panel to enable the Windows Scripting Host. I can track down details if you have issues.
Backing up and restoring data is an area that is often glossed over. Most people don't try to learn much about it until they've lost something important. (Me too )
If your iTunes library was in the usual layout then normally copying the whole iTunes folder from the User's Music folder in the old computer to the User's Music folder in the new one will usually work fine. Ideally this is done before iTunes is installed so that there is no empty library to replace, and all settings are picked up from the old library. This post contains more details.

  • Missing Songs Using Itunes 7 Backup/Restore Feature

Using iTunes 7 for Windows Backup feature (File->Backup to Disc...) I backed up my entire iTunes library to DVDs. I then used the "restore" feature to duplicate my library on a second computer. iTunes said it completely "restored" my library, but I have noticed that a number of songs/artists are not on the second computer but in my orginial library. So my question(s) is had anyone else found iTunes not backing up all their files and if so found a solution for it other than manually backing them up. I can't think of a reason iTunes would backup only 80% of my songs but think it did all of them. The first songs I noticed missing from the backup was the "compliations" folder.

Well your first question. Yes it backs up all info.
Second, yes you can use it to restore a mac also.
I believe it will restore to whatever you have your music folder set to in preferences.
When i backed up my music, my podcasts were all where they should be. I think your podcast subscriptions are saved to your account when u subscribe. Hope that answers your questions

.How can I sync my Iph5 to my MacBook to back up on itunes. The MacBook is currently on os x 10.5 and to sync itunes and backup my new phone I am getting a message saying i need 10.6 or later and it won't download.
    catherine187

As stated in the System Requirements, an iPhone 5 runs iOS 6. In order to sync to a computer you must have OSX 10.6.8 or later and iTunes 11 on the computer. If you can upgrade your MacBook to OSX 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard) you can purchase this version of OSX in the Apple Store. Most intel macs can run at least OSX 10.6.8. If your MacBook is a power pc Mac you are at the end of the supported operating systems and will not be able to upgrade the OSX or sync your iPhone 5.

i want to transfer itune contacts backup for iphone 4 to new iphone

You can follow the instructions in the page you linked from: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2109 to transfer everything from your old phone to your new one. If you only want to transfer contacts and you still have your old phone (or if the contacts are already on your computer) you could sync the contacts as described in: http://support.apple.com/kb/PH12317
Also, if you still have the old phone you could sync them via iCloud without using a computer: http://www.apple.com/icloud/setup/

    Hey Phantom42
Move them into folders that is listed below and iTunes should recognize it. Look in the Back up your backup sections to see the location.

I updated to IOS 8 but my C drive is out of space i couldn't restore my data back; how could move itunes with backup to another drive
    or what could i do

There are two solutions . . . I run my iTunes Library off an external hard drive. However, this may limit the portability of your library. Though a La Cie Rugged external would help with that (I love mine, though I use it for diagnostics and repair, not for iTunes--but it does get around).
You can also upgrade your hard drive as was previously suggested. I've bought my recent hardware from: http://www.powerbookmedic.com
They have lots of parts and great manuals!
    Good luck!

  • Itunes mobilesync backup not working

Before installing Mavericks I saved the itunes-mobilesync-backup folder (you know that with a long odd name) and after stepping up Mavericks moved back to the same folder but after starting the itunes it didnt seem to have my data, it is completely empty. Do you have any idea how I can restore my backup with this folder?

    Jeff hello,
Trash the iTunes Library file in your iTunes folder and put back the backup copy... check the name is correct 'iTunes Library'
Put all your backed up music in the iTunes Music folder.
Start iTunes and it should all work... as a check set the preferences > advanced > general tab NOT to copy any files when adding to Library and DO keep iTunes Music folder orgaized... OK any changes.
From the file menu select 'add to library' and choose the iTunes Music folder.
let's know how you get on Jeff ... TP

TOPIC: iTunes 9 – Backup doesn't function, Video playback is now slow, Requires a reboot to find the super drive when changing CDs or DVDs.
iTunes 9 has been difficult to say the least. We have a very large Video and TV library, backups are critical. When starting a backup to disc, we put in the blank DVD and the software reports that it will take XX (39 in this case) discs. After the first DVD ejects and the second blank is inserted, iTunes hangs.
Second: Watching programs on hulu.com the video drops frames and a very jerky playback experience sometimes including audio. iTunes 9 now works the same way, gone are the smooth video and audio. An authorized computer in our house can no longer play back any movies or TV that are located on the MacMini.
Third and most disturbing: Since the iTunes 9 upgrade, when listening to a CD on the Apple and it completes, if you want to listen to another one – it requires a Restart of the computer. It no longer knows that there is a super drive attached to the computer. After the restart, it works just fine for one use, CD or DVD and then you must restart to listen or watch another one. Using the super drive for data or programs works correctly and no problems experienced.
I want to be clear - none of these problems were happening before the forced upgrade to iTunes 9. After reading several posts, I don't want to sync my iPod Classic (80GB) for fear of what it will do to it.
The above is happening on a MacMini, G4 PPC, 1GB RAM, 80GB internal, 2 Terabyte external, OS-X 10.4 fully patched for operating system and applications.
We need to know when the 9.1 bug fix will be released? As long as it took to convert our library to 9.0, we don't want to try and back convert to version 8.x. In our case that would take feeding 221 backup DVDs and repurchase of several 9.0 only, episodes.
WE need the bug fix and fast!

I am running iTunes9 on WinXP, and I also cannot get it to back up. It either hangs on the "initializing" phase, or it thinks that my blank disks aren't blank and keeps spitting them out.
Also, I've brought this up before, by why MUST we back up to DVD? Why can't we backup to a folder location (such as network share or external HD)? DVD backup is slow, problematic, and wasteful. Especially if it fails, and you need to throw out the disks it's already burned, and will not resume where it left off before the failure.
For a company that's usually known for its design and "it just works" philosophy, how can you keep making such a broken, buggy product? Here's a thought, before cramming more crap into iTunes, let's just get it working as advertised for once? That would be nice.

  • NAS Backup with Workgroup and Domain

I have used these in the past and would recommend for your purpose Seagate NAS 2 bay

I am looking for a small NAS backup box for small company to backup "off-site" 1TB would hold all the data, but looking at 1-4 TB / raid is not a must, single drive should do. The off-site location will be with about 4 pc that are just workgroup. I want those pc to backup to the drive in a folder they have access to. Then the main office that will backup to this as "off-site" is AD and I would like for the NAS to support users from the AD, so the local users cannot access the data.
     Price - $100-$400 .
    Any suggestions?
