ITunes, net services freezing

I've got a relatively new (1.5-month) 1.66 GHz Core Duo Mini that I use for not much else other than a media center and net server. I've noticed recently (not sure if the problem existed before then, but perhaps coinciding with the firmware update) that every once in a few days, iTunes will freeze up, not allowing so much as a force quit. Oddly, sometimes I can use Finder just fine. And net services will mostly stop responding -- yet, if I ftp to it, it will reliably ask for my login name (and not respond further if I give it one).
I've not installed much on it other than system updates, the latest firmware, Fink and DarwinPorts. I usually keep iTunes up and a VNC viewer connected. Before I do a re-install, anybody have anything else I might want to try?

YES! I downloaded 3 albums a few hours ago and it has been a trial ever since. First it kept freezing during the whole download process. I kept having to go to support to help me finish. When I finally got it "finished" I realized I was missing MANY songs. So my evening has been spent searching for my songs.... some I can't find, some won't let me listen to them, telling me that I am not authorized, but then at the same time telling me that I am already authorized. And the ones that I have found... well I have had to go individually to each and every one, enter in the name, album and such... and I am still missing songs.
I am so fed up right now that I want them to let me download them all over again. Just start fresh.
This is the dumbest thing. I am so LIVID right now.

  • Itunes and ipod freeze during sync

    hello,
firstly, i would like to thank all you kind souls who post to this forum with very helpful suggestions. you have helped me with many past difficulties.
my present issue concerns transferring songs from itunes to my ipod (4th generation). here's the story:
on friday, my ipod started acting funny (skipping songs, etc.). by saturday, it would no longer do anything (folder with !, resetting did not help). this had happened to me before so i did not freak out and figured i just had to restore (that had worked the first time around). however, when i plugged in my ipod to my computer (powerbook g4, just three weeks old), it was not recognised and i was prompted to initialize the disk. i then came to this forum and read pretty much everything related to this kind of problem. countless resets, erases, partitions, etc., later, i was able to get the ipod software back on the ipod. it seemed all normal but there was no music on it (makes sense since i'd restored it). but then...when i plugged in my ipod to sync it with itunes, it would freeze at a given song (not always the same one, sometimes 31 songs into it, sometimes 500). i came back to this forum and read that i should reset my ports, which i did. didn't help, the sync still freezes both the ipod and itunes.
so that's where i'm at: i have the ipod software on the ipod, but i can't sync it with itunes (i.e. i can't get my music onto it). my brother thinks i have bad blocks (or sectors). is this a possibility? the ipod does make some noise (not sure whether it's the infamous clicking...).
    so here are my questions:
    1) is there anything i haven't done yet that could get the ipod to sync with itunes?
assuming i have done everything and the problem is with my ipod's hard disk:
    2) would a program like disk warrior potentially be able to fix the ipod?
    3) would it cost me less to have the ipod serviced than to buy disk warrior?
    4) is there somekind of open-source or freeware disk repair utility that could perhaps repair my ipod's disk?
thanks for reading and i really look forward to any suggestions.
    gen
p.s. the ipod's more than a year old, so no longer under warranty.

Okay, I got it to work tonight...
My U2 iPod would freeze while syncing. I restored and tried to sync and it would freeze on different song #'s. All the while I heard a clicking sound coming from the drive that I never noticed before. It would just click once in a while, not repeatedly.
My fix: (a version of the carpet drop) While the iPod was on and spinning, I held it tight with my right hand, facing me and smacked it's side into the palm of my left hand, simulating the amount of force that it would incurr from a waist-high drop onto carpet.
Now, this force was sheer approximation, being that it would be too time consuming and difficult to calculate this exact amount of force. I mean, my waist may be higher/lower than the original carpet-dropper, and not to mention the plushness of the carpet! Who knows if he did it on Shenandoah Shagg or maybe just some Bermuda Burr Rug?!
By the way, the problem started after being left out in the car on recent cold nights... hmmmm, my iPod thinks me a jerk.
Anyways, here are some previous attempts at fixing my situation (in no particular order):
    1) restored from 5 different iPod updates (2004-11-15, 2005-02-22, 2005-06-26, 2005-09-23, 2005-11-17)
    2) tried to fix with Disk Utility
    3) tried to fix with Tech Tool Pro
    4) tried to fix with Disk Warrior
    5) tried to initialize multiple time (even writing zeroes)
    6) manual sync

  • ITunes on Windows - freezes temporarily

For some reason after the 7.6 update iTunes now will freeze temporarily (music still plays) and return to normal in 20-30 seconds. Even if im not pressing buttons or clicking on songs it still freezes. No other services are active during the temp freeze. Very annoying while im trying to change, edit, and even move songs!

It seems whenever I have Itunes running my CPU is at or near 100%, and also tends to lock up for 20-30 seconds as some of you have mentioned, and for no good reason. I have tried loading older versions of Itunes but when I install them they will not open due to an error that says a newer version of Itunes created "itunes music" folder so it cannot be opened. And playing videos??? forget it, mind you the same videos can be played in other programs full screen and run fine.
It seems everytime itunes updates, my computer hates it more and more. Does anyone else fail to see why playing a simple mp3 file can lock up an entire computer?

  • I When ever I try to open iTunes, it immediately freezes and says "iTunes has encountered a problem and needs to close."

I am using a Windows 7 laptop, 64 bit. When ever I try to open iTunes, it immediately freezes and says "iTunes has encountered a problem and needs to close." I have tried uninstalling then reinstalling, and also going back to previous versions. Any ideas as to how to fix this? Thanks!!

You need to remove all installer file, uninstall iTunes and all related programs, then do a clean install.
    Try the following steps:
    1. Go to Microsoft website to fix install and Unistall problems. Click "Run now" from Fix it to remove all iTunes & related installer files:
    http://support.microsoft.com/mats/Program_Install_and_Uninstall
Be aware that Windows Installer CleanUp Utility will not remove the actual program from your computer. However, it will remove the installation files so that you can start the installation, upgrade, or uninstall over.
    2. You should remove all instances of iTunes and the rest of the components listed below:
it may be necessary to remove all traces of iTunes, QuickTime, and related software components from your computer before reinstalling iTunes.
Use the Control Panel to uninstall iTunes and related software components in the following order:
    iTunes
    QuickTime
    Apple Software Update
    Apple Mobile Device Support
    Bonjour
Apple Application Support (iTunes 9 or later)
Follow the instructions from Apple article listed here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1923 to remove all components
    3. Reboot your computer. Next, download iTunes from here:http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/ and install from scratch

I recently dug out my old 160gb iPod Classic. Every time I connect it to iTunes, the program freezes and/or crashes. My computer recognizes that the iPod is plugged in, (it's accesible under "My Computer") but iTunes doesn't acknowledge it, at all. I've tried every single solution I've seen, and none of them work. I know the Classic is outdated, but my other iPod doesn't have nearly as much room. Can anyone help with this?

please check the listener.log file and find out for any more errors.
ORA-12514: TNS:listener does not currently know of service requested in connect descriptor
Cause: The listener received a request to establish a connection to a database or other service. The connect descriptor received by the listener specified a service name for a service (usually a database service) that either has not yet dynamically registered with the listener or has not been statically configured for the listener. This may be a temporary condition such as after the listener has started, but before the database instance has registered with the listener.
Action: - Wait a moment and try to connect a second time.
    - Check which services are currently known by the listener by executing: lsnrctl services <listener name>
    - Check that the SERVICE_NAME parameter in the connect descriptor of the net service name used specifies a service known by the listener.
    - If an easy connect naming connect identifier was used, check that the service name specified is a service known by the listener.
    - Check for an event in the listener.log file.
    Thanks

Updated iTunes to 10.5, iTunes won't work now! Everytime I open iTunes it just freezes and I can't click on anything. It says to take it out of compatibility mode and still doesn't work! any help??
    Thank you. Nick

Okay, we'll try the technique from the following post. Be sure to be logged in to your usual user account when doing so. (Otherwise you'll be editing the wrong set of HKEY_CURRENT_USER keys.)
Re: How do I turn off the compatibility mode for ITunes.
Does that clear up the compatibility message?

  • Every time I attempt to download the 64 bit version of iTunes it just freezes my entire computer right in the middle of installation. Anything?

    Same problem.

  • I have the latest version of Itunes but it freezes my whole computer when it starts up

I have the latest version of Itunes but it freezes my whole computer when it starts up.  I have installed/reintalled Itunes but it still stops my whole computer when I start Itunes.

OK, so we rule out LSP then,
Try following steps one at a time and test your itunes:
    1. Restart computer, right mouse click iTunes icon and select "Run As Administrator", now try your itunes.
    2. If that does not work, check to see if this file APSDaemon.exe is the problem here.
    Close your iTunes.
Press Ctrl-Alt-Del key and choose Task Manager. In the "Processes" Tab, select the file APSDaemon.exe and click End Prosses button, then close the task manager window.
Now open itunes and see if it is working?
If that works, to prevent having to do the same process everytime you restart Windows, go to. START button, type in
    MSCONFIG
    Hit ENTER
Click STARTUP Tab, Uncheck "Apple Push", click OK.
    Restart Windows.
    3. If that fails or you don't see ApsDaemon.exe in the Processes, refer to following article to remove SC files:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2363
    4. If that fails, repair or reinstall your Quicktime. START / CONTROL PANEL / PROGRAMS N FEATURES / hightlight QUICKTIME and click REPAIR.

  • TS1717 iTunes tends to freeze MacBook in many different ways?

Since I moved from Belgium to Australia following problem occurs:
    - When my Macbook Pro (OS X Lion 10.7.5) gets out of (screen)sleepmode when running music on iTunes the computer freezes and the song that was playing gets stuck on the last note.
    - When I close Itunes and I have another (soundcard using?) application running, for instance Skype, everything is fine, just untill I close that application. If I close it, the entire computer freezes again. Same problem occures when using Garage Band, DivX, QuickTime, iMovie,... in combination with iTunes.
Could this problem have anything to do with me moving to a different country (area conflict...)?
In order to use iTunes without freezing the computer I now have to close every application that's running before opening iTunes and restarting the computer every time I stop using iTunes. Is there a solution for my problem?

    Well...I was partially-blind.
I had a second look at my MSCONFIG list...and 'waay down at the bottom was iTunesHelper...with its checkbox clear.  oops.
I ticked it of course, and then manually launched iTunesHelper.exe and re-connected the iPhone.  iTunes auto-launched, and (as usual) it stepped thru the various stages like it's supposed to, but still no pop-up message on the iPhone screen.
Now I'm wondering if that came to an end when I made the jump to the iPhone5 from iPhone4(?) because it certainly seems to be syncing alright...just no pop-up on the iPhone's screen.

  • Anyone else seeing iTunes 11.1 freeze after cmd-L?

I just updated to MacOS 10.8.5 and iTunes 11.1, and I'm seeing some really irritating behavior from iTunes.
    To reproduce:
Start playing a playlist in the library
While iTunes is playing, hit command-L to jump to the currently playing song.
At this point, the iTunes UI completely freezes.  It continues playing the current track, but it completely stops at that point.  The iTunes window itself is completely unresponsive -- spinning beachball and everything -- and I have to force-quit the application.
I've been able to reproduce this very consistently this evening.  The last time it froze, I got the crash-reporter dialog box, which I filled out and submitted, so hopefully someone at Apple will look into this soon.
Has anyone else seen this behavior?

Yes, this is a real problem.  Apple's really broken iTunes with 11.1.  The "Next" and "Previous" commands within "Get info" work for me at the "Music" level, but do not work when I am down inside playlists.  Spinning beach ball and then I have to Force-quit.  Command-L is dead for me too and I have to Force-quit.  Makes you wonder about the level of testing that is carried out prior to release.  Both of these seem to be related to playlists and their heierarchic nature.  I hope it's an easy bug to fix and the next version addresses these issues.
