ITunes new user question

im planning to buy an iPod Touch in the coming days and this will be the first time ill be using the iTunes. (ive been using Sonicstage for my Sony mp3 walkman eversince). if i say i have an mp3 file downloaded from a site other than iTunes store would iTunes automatically "recognise" the song? how do i search for the song/album cover/picture so it would appear on my iPod Touch? and can it also recognise "any" downloaded MP4 video?

You shouldn't have any problems - itunes will play mp3 files fine and it's pretty easy to add all your files in.
Before you buy your new ipod, I would advise you to go ahead and download itunes now and start using it. Also you should be aware that quite a few windows users are having problems with accessing the store or are having other installation problems (check the forums for examples). You have to use itunes 7.4 with the new ipods, and a lot of people have gotten the new ipod, updated itunes and then not been able to download new music or videos from the store! But you don't have to buy music through the store if you don't want to.
When you do download itunes, I think the very first time it will ask you if you want it to search your computer for music files. If not, you can manually add folders of music to itunes - for example, if all your music is in your 'my music' folder in itunes go to File>Add folder to library, highlight 'my music' and it will automatically add all your music in. When you download other mp3 files you can use File>add file to add individual songs, or just open them with itunes and it will add them to your library.
Mp3 files don't need any reformatting for itunes; if you have unprotected wma files, like you ripped a CD on windows media player, itunes automatically converts them (I think to aac, which shows up as .m4a). itunes cannot read protected wma files, however. I can't answer your question about videos, but i think itunes could read them - try it and see if it works!
Another thing to be aware of is that music bought from the itunes store is usually in protected aac format, and I don't think you can play that on your sony. Also, when you install itunes it automatically makes itself the default audio and video player unless you uncheck the box during installation - so keep that in mind.
After you get itunes up you can 'sync' all your music onto your ipod; if you have more music than will fit on the ipod you can create playlists and sync all or some playlists on your ipod, so it's up to you what you want to put on it.
also - I think apple's online pages aren't that great for info, but the itunes help is a little better.

  • New user question  -  superimposing one image on top of another

    Hi,
I am a new user to Photoshop having downloaded the trial version of Elements 10 this morning so forgive my very basic question. I have a picture of a sunset and a picture of a ship. How do I place the ship in the sunset please? that is, how do I superimpose the ship on to the sunset background?
    Cheers,
    Mankie22

You can also try the quick selection tool.  The selection tools take some practice to understand them.  Changing brush sizes in the option bar may help you with either the selection brush tool or the quick selection tool.  You want the selection to include the entire ship, not just the outer edges.  You may have had the brush very small and therefore just selected a narrow edge of the ship.
Once you make your selection and paste it over the other layer, you should take a look at how the edges of the ship appear.  If they are jagged, you might need to Undo a couple of steps and either fix up the selection ( change brush size, addto/subtract from).  Another refinement would be to make sure you still have a selection tool active and then right click within the selection.  Choose Refine Edge and you can smooth the edge there - along with other refinements available.
Click on Help in the menu bar and go to the Adobe help site.  Type in key words for more info.

  • New user question--getting launch window when connected to iTunes

Hi--I'm rather new to the iPod/Apple world. I have an iPod Touch 8gb. I hope someone can advise me on how to get rid of this pop up window that keeps occurring.
In the last week or so, when I connect to iTunes to update my music, etc., I get this window that says this:
    Apple iPod
    Camera connected
Select the program to launch for this application
Then it gives me a list of various Windows programs to launch. I always select Cancel, because it doesn't make sense. It doesn't seem to affect any updating, it's just annoying.
This happened after my daughter uploaded some photos from her camera (Olympus). I don't know if that has anything to do with it. It's just so weird that it thinks my iPod is a camera!
Can someone tell me how to get rid of this window? If not, oh well, I'll just keep doing what I'm doing. Thanks!

    Hello Beth,
    And welcome to Apple Discussions!
This usually happens when you have photos stored on your iPod. ePrhaps this Apple support document can assist you.

  • New User Question: Make iTunes look like the My Music folder on my PC

    Hello
I newbie question. I just bought a 60g with Video.
I use Winamp for my PC, and use a Plug-in called "Dynamic Library". This allows me to see directly into my "My Music" folder while using Winamp.
Is there something similar to this that I have missed? Or, to put it another way...is there a way to have a folder created for each artist rather than a list of each song and each artist? This would enable me to scroll by artist then click that artist to see song lists (hopefully)
iTunes has a list of 5000 songs making it difficult to scroll efficiently. I really hope I don't have to manually create hundreds of playlists (one for each artist) so that I can find a song quickly.
As always, I apologize in advance if this is incredibly obvious and I have had a brain **** and missed it.
    Thanks for any feedback.

    Thanks Dave
I see that. Here's an example of what I'm trying to do. In my My Music folder, I had a folder called "one hit wonders," iTunes has divided this into each artist or its album. My original folder was a mix of several one hit wonder albums. Then I find out that you have to manually add album art to each artist. There was a appropriate album art in each folder. I am just surprised that iTunes couldn't automatically recognize this when it originally downloaded each folder.
I have just spent so much time organizing my "My Music" folder...untold hours. Now I'm basically looking to go through that all over again.
I wonder if I had selected "manually label each folder" or whatever the choice was when iTunes started if this would be different?

  • New user - question re: disk usage

New to Macs, had it since the 12th April. How can I tell where all my disk space is being eaten up? Of the 160GB I've used around 50GB. I can't for the life of me imagine how. I've copied one camcorder tape on and tried to produce a DVD (I need more time OK!) and also I've copied a couple of gigs worth of digicam images that may be duplicated in both the iPhoto library and the original folder I copied them into - my question, is there anything like Treesize Pro (on the PC) for a Mac? 50 gigs is a lot to fill up and I'd love to know where it's all going. I have emptied the trash.
BTW so far I love this machine!! (thats speaking as a 20+yr dyed-in-the-wool PC user & builder)
    TIA

Check Problems from Insufficient RAM and Free Hard Disk Space under Memory Management in Mac OS X. OS X makes generous use of paging or virtual memory which takes up some free hard drive space and the amount depends on activity - number of running applications and the amount of RAM installed, etc.
In addition, check Freeing space on your Mac OS X startup disk under Finding lost disk space at the bottom of the page.

  • New user - questions about email setup and synchronization

    Hi,
I'm a not-particularly-techno-savvy new owner of a BlackBerry Curve 8900. My questions are:
1      I seem to only have the option to use a work email account with a BB Enterprise server and not the option to create or add an email addy. How do I resolve this?
2      I've installed the BlackBerry Desktop Manager but when I try to synchronize data from my device - organiser stuff and contacts - I get a message saying there are no applications configured, with subsequent instructions as to how to do this but I then have to choose from a huge list of folders and other stuff and have no idea what to do!
I'm really hoping someone will be kind enough to try and help as I'm floundering dreadfully.
    Thanks in advance.
    Jan

    Jan,
When you install Desktop Manager it gives you the option to setup with an enterprise server or internet email, I can't tell from your post which you have.
However, to pick the applications to sync, assuming you have Desktop Manager 4.7,
    open Desktop Manager
Click on Synchronize on the left side of the screen
On the next screen that opens, choose Synchronize under the word "Configure" (also put check marks in all the boxes that will allow you to check)
On the next screen to open choose Synchronization on the "right" side
In a couple of seconds another screen will open up where you can choose what applications to sync (calendar in Outlook, tasks in Outlook, Contacts in Outlook etc)  just choose each program you need to sync and choose the program on your PC to use such as Outlook.
I also have the 8900 and it syncs with my Outlook 2003 for contacts, calendar, memo and tasks.
    Hope that helps.

  • New user question re Events folder after iPhoto import

    Hi there everyone
I'm new to Aperture 3 having just bought it from the App Store earlier today. On the first launch of the app I chose to import the 14,000 or so images in my iPhoto library to Aperture 3, into its own library. It took a while, but all went swimmingly. I've now archived my old iPhoto library to an external HD (not currently mounted, or even attached usually...) and deleted it from my system drive.
Now, here's the bit I don't quite understand... In the Inspector, under the Library browser tab there's a folder called iPhoto Library - it contains my old iPhoto libraries that were arranged in folders. All good. But there's also a folder called 'Events' which contains a long alphabetised list of what were iPhoto events, but appearing here as Aperture projects. I don't need this - and yet anytime I open a project by double-clicking it in the Browser, that Events folder springs open and takes over my Inspector. If I close the folder my Browser view empties too.
As I understood it, any folders appearing in the 'Projects & Albums' section of the Library inspector are subsets of the main Library. And yet if I try to delete this 'Events' folder I first get a warning dialog (that I don't understand):
Some versions based on these master files are included in albums outside of the selection.
These versions will be removed from all Albums, Books, Light Tables, Web Pages, Web Journals, Slideshows, MobileMe Albums, Flickr Albums, and Facebook Albums.
and if I go ahead with it then my entire Library disappears.
If someone with better understanding of Aperture's organisational hierarchy could explain what's going on here, and hopefully how I can get rid of that 'Events' folder, I'd be most grateful.
    Thanks - Robin

Thanks for taking the time to reply, Frank. In the meantime I did read the manual (again...) as well as googling extensively (again...) and picking up some organisational tips from youtube videos etc. At the very least I'm moving towards a more workable organisational system now.
But to me this particular 'feature' of the application design seems odd. Compare it to another application that uses a library paradigm: iTunes. You import your albums and there's a dedicated browser for navigating them and finding the one you need. There's also a search system. (Just like Aperture...) If you choose to have any other items in the 'inspector' (I know that's not the right terminology) they're going to be playlists - specific subsets of the main library that serve a specific purpose. But you don't have to have any if you don't want or need them.
If iTunes worked like Aperture 3 then every album imported would go into that dedicated browser/search system *and* appear at the 'top level' of the inspector as some sort of playlist-equivalent. But I couldn't remove it from the inspector, or hide it, because that would delete the actual album... I'd have two choices - leave them there and let the vertical height of the inspector become unworkable, or start filing them away in some rigid folder structure that I'd have to dream up just for the sake of visual organisation.
iTunes doesn't work like that - neither does iPhoto, or mail, or any other application I can think of that's essentially library-based and has an inspector/browser feature. That seems odd.
Put it another way - if Aperture did *not* act as it did, creating a new Event in the Projects & Albums section of the inspector, for every single import, what would be lost? I think nothing. You'd still have a dedicated browser and search system. You could still have albums and smart albums for subsets of photos you happened to be working on. A dedicated, separate organisational hierarchy could still be made for those people who needed to work in a different way.
Like I say - it's workable, but seems odd. Maybe a month down the line I'll see the point of it and learn to love it. But I also wouldn't mind betting it won't survive into the next version of the application.

  • New user question on "public" visibility of podcasts

Have just installed an xserve and will be putting a website on it for clients to access content. Can I allow them to view podcasts created with podcast producer or can Podcast Producer be set up to output/publish the stuff to my website as part of the workflow? The client site will be a CMS probably created in Joomla.
Apologies for low level question to what seems like such a high level expert forum, but in our country (Singapore) it is almost impossible to find any technical experts in mac stuff.
    thanks
    Tony

plug in your x, connection detected will pop up on phone, selct mass storage.
open the drive on the mac desktop
create a folder, or organize in you media, etc. wherever you like.
drag and drop you files, the x will find em.......
tags, pic, etc anything you got associated with your files.    I haven't tried itunes files that have been purchased and are still "locked"

  • New User Question - Simulation advancing on button but cannot figure out why

Hello everyone.  I tried to do my due diligence in searching but I'm sure this is such an easy question no one else needed to ask it.  I have downloaded the Adobe Captivate 6 trial as we are attempting to do some simulation e-learning.  I have recorded all of my click captures and am now in the process of editing the project.  It automatically created a click box with the properties to paus project until user clicks.  This all works fine and allows me to click the next button and it moves to the next slide.  So I thought I would be clever and create a "Show me" Help button.  I created an arrow_1 and hid it from view.  Then created a button_2 with the text "Show Me" and when clicked it would show arrow_1.  The problem is that when this button is clicked, the arrow pops up but then the next slide is shown even though I never clicked the "Next" click box button that is supposed to advance the simulation.  Looking at the timeline the only thing with a pause symbol is the click box and I have attempted to change the properties on the button_2 action settings from attempts = 1, to infinate, to last attempt no action to disabled etc.  No matter what I do, if this button is in there, and it's clicked, it seems to ignore the pause simulation until someone clicks the click box properties.
Am I doing this correctly?  It seemed pretty intuitive to create the show me box and show an arrow but with it in there, the simulation goes to the next page and I can't figure out why it's ignoring the click box.
Any help would be apprectiated, I have looked for tutorials on simulations but they seem to be pretty sparse out there and the help file didn't have anything like this in there.
    Thanks again,
    -Will

Well I don't know if this is the right way to do it but it's a way that works
I created a 2nd button and had the first button disappear after the click to be replaced by a button that doesn't work.  This way the project still pauses so only the correct "Next" button process goes forward.  Kind of odd coming from a visual studio background but hey until I hear the right way to do it, this will work

  • ITunes New Security Questions Suck!

I have never seen a more ignorant choice of security questions. Is this a joke? Digital punking? There is no way I will ever be able to recover my password in the future because I couldn't find three questions I didn't need to GUESS at!
Answer Question 1: I don't know that was a million years ago!
Answer Question 2: I don't know that was a million years ago!
Answer Question 3: I don't know I never cared enough to remember for a million years!
Answer Question 4: I don't know any normal human being who would know the answer to that question!
Answer Question 5: I don't know that was a million years ago!

I didn't ask for easy, I didn't ask for anything. Now I will... Give me relevant, effective, secure options for recovering my account after you punish me for going more than a month without buying anything from you, Apple.
OWASP's security guide says this about security questions/answers, (bold added by me)...
They are unacceptable for the following reasons:
    1. Collection of information about people without their explicit consent (such as "Mother's maiden name") is illegal in most privacy regimes. Such collection is subject to privacy laws, review and correction by the subject, and so on.
    2. IT Security Policies and standards such as ISO 27000 prohibit the clear text storage of passwords, but almost all Q&A schemes store both the question and answer in the clear.
    3. The information in the answers is public for a goodly portion of the users of the Internet, and thus is found using public sources.
Interestingly, Apple has not signed on to OWASP's guidelines, while much of their competition has.
How can Apple possibly think this is good business? It's just shopping... get over yourself!

  • Airport and Time Machine new user questions

Background: Switched my business from PC to Mac June 07--and loving it! Upgraded to Leopard over the holidays and bought a 500Mb wireless backup drive. Setup was easy (thanks forum) and I backed up both MacBookPro's with this drive. Buffalo popped last week and Mac bias now runs deep and the local AppleStore had the the 1 TB model in stock.
My connection is: Cable modem (T-W Roadrunner service)-->Time Capsule-->Linksys/Vonage modem. (USB connection from TC to HP 6210 computer). All computers are .n wireless access.
I have had things happen in my environment that I don't understand and can't figure out how to address:
1.) Download/Upload speed according to Speakeasy is 7,000 kbpd down and 700 plus up. Very happy with this and this is an improvement over my old Linksys router.
2.)However my Vonage was set on medium bandwidth and calls are now garbled whereas the old router they were clear. I changed the Vonage bandwidth to high and the calls are OK.
3.) Software updater called for an update download and the forecasted download time was 8 hours!!!! Web browsing seems to work fine and if anything faster.
4.) When I send e-mail about~80% of the time the e-mail fails "on the selected server". I can try again or choose my .mac account or another account and it goes. sometimes I choose the same account and it goes.
I don't understand and have played with manual configuration only to mess things up so nothing works at all. My server is a Pop server. Any ideas?
    Time Machine:
-Initial backup was extremely fast and at least 2x faster then the initial B/U on the Buffalo. Incrementals are un-noticeable now.
-Our second MacBook required the preferences file to be wiped out (corrupted) and the Genius told me all I had to do was repoint Time Machine back to Time Capsule. It currently see's her old backups but does not generate new backups. I don't understand this. If it can see the drive and restore works (we restored mailboxes after renewing preferences) why won't it backup? If I do repoint to TC do I lose the previous backups?
Everything is working but just not as seamless as I would have expected and re-sending e-mail and slow downloads makes no sense to me. Help me if you can.
    Thanks;
    Boomerang

    Boomerang,
Your email issue could have something to do with DNS settings not being in the TC...
Repointing your MacBook to the TC should not have any impact on the previous backups... i.e. it will not delete them.

  • Possibly dumb new user question: What does it take to get variables to show up in the variables reporting tab?

I've been a LabVIEW user (2011) for about 1.5 years now and just got ahold of TestStand 2014 to try out as a structure for our future test needs.
I've been using it on and off for about 3 days and there's something that's been driving me nuts.  When I run a sequence and the report comes up at the end, there's three tabs on it:  Report, Steps, and Variables.  Report and Steps are exactly what I expect to see.   However, the Variables tab is always blank.  Nothing I have found via my technique of checking everything in the menus that looks vaguely related and right-clicking things on many objects and checking those menus for other vaguely related things as well.
I tried searching for references to it, and everything I get relates to the "Main" variables tab that you see when editing the sequence, not the one that comes up on the report.
See the arrow in the picture below:
I suspect there's something incredibly obvious that I am missing but it's driving me nuts here...
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

You won't see that populated when an execution is complete. The variables are worthless at that point.
If you want to see that tab populated pause the execution in the middle.  Or set a breakpoint.  Then you can look at the variables at run time.

  • New User Question: Can I move music from internal to external hard disk?

I just downloaded iTunes today, and am in the process of copying my CD music folders and converting the WMA music to the correct format. As I'm doing this, it occurs to me that I might have to move my music folders off of my internal hard drive and onto an external one because I'm running out of room on my internal disk. If I move my music folders, will iTunes still be able to find my music? Many thanks.
    ~Kelly

So2 things, ensure the box below is UNCHECKED and also that your external harddrive is hooked up before accessing the iTunes folder.
Don't forget to UNCHECK the "open iTunes when iPod is connected" box under the iPod window. Acciedentally hooked up my iPod THEN harddrive, and my library got all screwed up and had to clear it and restart it.
I also have the iTunes program on the harddrive, so that it can't run without it hooked up.

  • New User Question:  Transferring Project from PC to Mac

    Hello All:
I'm hoping someone can give me a little advice. I just made the switch to Mac last week and I'm struggling a bit.
I have a large (full length feature film) project that I had been working on using a PC (Pinnacle Studio). The editing was 90% complete. However, it became necessary at this point to switch over to the Mac.
I rendered the project as an AVI file and was able to open it using Final Cut Express. However the guy at the Mac store told me that I would lose some quality doing it that way and that the best thing to do would be to re-capture the footage from the DV tapes directly into the Mac.
Okay. So here's my first question: Is there really no other way to do this without losing video quality? (It would mean a major set-back in our schedule and many, many hours of re-editing what has already been done.)
If I must re-capture the video, then I will do so - but I just want to make sure it's the right thing to do before I commit myself.
    I'd appreciate any advice.

Thank you for responding Tom. I was pretty much resolved to doing that anyway. I just wanted to make sure there wasn't another way.
I have another question - I captured my first DV tape to the Mac.
During capture, the process stopped at every individual shot and went back frame by frame "locating timecode break". Once the tape was done - it automatically separated each shot into individual clips.
This is fine. But the problem is that there are now several seconds missing from the beginning of each shot. Some of the shorter clips are only a couple frames long because the majority of video was not captured.
How do I tell Final Cut to simply capture the entire tape as one long clip? I can separate the shots myself.
I appreciate the help - and sorry if I'm asking really obvious questions.
