ITunes no longer ordering iPhone photos by name

In order to upgrade from iOS5 to 6 i had to go from iTunes 10.6.2 to 10.7; since doing so first of all only half of my photos would sync at all (1,898 out of 4,7xx) and finally (after removing all of my music) it transferred them all only to re-sort them all by date instead of name...
Is this a bug or a 'feature'? (I seem to remember iTunes 10.6.3 introduced a similar bug, despite claiming in the release notes that it was fixing one)
If it is the latter then it is a rather annoying one, and i wish to know how to return to sorting by name.
If you're going to change something as major as the way all photos are ordered, then why not provide an option for it? One dropdown box in settings? a toggle? anything!
Instead of being able to group similar photos with a naming convention, my photos are now being ordered effectively at random. (and there is no way i'm going to through nearly five thousand photos and mess around with the date data just so i can fix what Apple have broken.)
So does anyone know how to fix it back to name sorting? I can't downgrade iTunes as it won't recongise my library file now that it's been modified by a newer version... I'm not using iPhoto to sync (or at all for that matter), just choosing a folder within the sync options in iTunes, so it isn't that messing with it...
I've tried unsyncing and resyncing photos, i've tried removing and rebuilding the 'ipod photo cache' (i had to do this a number of times just to get them to sync in the first place) and nothing is working.
Oh, and yes i have seen the Apple support article "iOS: Understanding photo sorting" (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4221) and it is incorrect. It claims that under iOS4 and upwards photos are sorted by date, which is simply not true.
My iPhone photos were sorted by name for the whole time i had iOS5, and either iOS6 or iTunes 10.7 has changed this.
For reference, I'm using a blacbook running Snow Leopard, iTunes 10.7 (now) and an iPhone 4 running iOS6 (now).

I manage photos on both a PC and a Mac using folders for the photos and ITunes (10.7.0.21) to synch to my IPad (IOS 5.1.1) and my wifes iPad (IOS 5.1.1). In this process, I have suffered through Apple photo sort changes by date taken, file name, and now, under iTunes 10.7.0.21 something weird. I have been twice to the Genius Bar with no success. Here is a test that I ran with PC Windows 7, iTunes (10.7.0.21) and my iPad (IOS 5.1.1).
I created a Test 1 Folder with five photos. Here is a simplification of the test folder. The File Name and Date Taken were set so that they would sort in reverse order. Note File E has the earliest Date Taken and File A has the latest date taken. I am using simple integers instead of dates here for simpliciity.  The Display Order shows the photo order as seen on my iPad. This order reflects an ascending Date Taken order. This is a change that was introduced with iTunes 10.7.0.21).
File Name     Date Taken     Display Order
A                             5                     5
B                             4                     4
C                             3                     3
D                             2                     2
E                             1                     1
Now, I created a new test folder and then copied the contents from the above folder using the following copy sequence: C, D, B, A, E. I then used iTunes to synch this new folder to my iPad. I was surprised to see the Display Order exactly reflect the copy order I had used. In other words, the iTunes & iPad combo now did not use Date Taken as the sort order for this new folder.
Then, I did another synch and found that the Display Order was now by Date Taken. Yikes!!!
This inconsitent behaviour is a BUG. Apple needs to fix the iTunes & IOS software to deliver consistent IOS display order under all circumstances of file addition, deletion, etc to a folder. It would be better if they offerred sort options under IOS but I would still be wildly happy if Apple would fix the current bugs and then stick with the sort order instead of changing it.

I have a Mac OSx 10.6.8 and iPhoto 7.1.5 and can no longer order printed photo albums unless I update to new version of iPhoto. But reviews of new iPhoto are so negative that I am uncomfortable about buying it. Will it be fine or should I steer clear of trouble and accept that i can no longer publish my photos?

    iPhoto '11 is working well.
The reviews usually only show the comments of people who do not like the changed features.
To get an idea what to expect, when you upgrade, look at the iPhoto '11 support sites.

  • IOS 7   iTunes 11.1.4 sort photos by name, not date

    Hy, I'm running iOS 7.0.4 & iTunes 11.1.4.
I have a bunch of pics in folders that are incrementally named (001, 002 etc).
But when exporting them to my ipod touch, they are listed automatically by the date added.
How can I sort them by NAME and not by DATE on my ipod touch?

  • Can no longer see iPhone photos in iPhoto

After upgrading my iPhone to 3.1.2 iPhoto no longer autolaunches when the iPhone is connected to my Mac Book Pro (10.6). When I launch iPhoto ('08, 7.1.5) myself the phone's camera shows up on the left-hand side but when I select it I see no photos to import. If I uncheck the "Hide photos already imported" checkbox I see dashed lines indicating that there are photos that have already been imported, but the photos do not appear within the dashed border.
I have try restarting the phone as well as resetting the phone by holding down the power and home keys.
    Any ideas?

My MacBookPro is totally up to date: runs OS X Snow Leopard and the update 10.6.2. The iPhoto is version 8.1.1, iTunes version is 9.0.2. and iPhone has software version 3.1.2.
Up to a few days ago all worked perfectly but since yesterday iPhoto doesn't see my iPhone.
I've reinstalled Snow Leopard and checked for software updates for all ... no solution!
I've seen NUMEROUS guys with the exact same problem but I saw NO answer to solve the problem (except for deleting photos from emails etc which is bollocks!).
Can Apple not help by fixing the glitch in their software, which it obviously is.

  • ITunes no longer links to photos?

I had a large photo library on an external hard drive - i followed itunes help and in the prefs i said: Don't caopy to itunes library when i imported serval gigs of photos to the app.
    everything was fine.
now, i just hooked a camera to itunes for th efirst time and imported. the pref still says dont import.
but now - it imports to itunes library on my local hd which i dont want AND all the external HD photos i had imported are no longer present in iphoto.
is there a way like in itunes to physically move the iphoto library folder location to my external harddrive?
it certainly doesn't make sense to clog my local hd with many gigs worth of photos that i have dupes of elsewhere. there has to be a better way to handle this?
    Thanks.

    RecordIt
I'm afraid you're swapping the names of iTunes and iPhoto a bit in your query, but here goes.
    1. Yes you can easily move the location of your iPhoto Library Folder to the external. Simply copy it to the new location. Then hold down the option (or alt) key when launching iPhoto and choose Locate. Then point iPhoto to the new location, thereafter it will be your default location.
However, if you launch iPhoto with the disk not available, iPhoto will create a new library at your Pictures Folder, so that disk must always be connected if you're using iPhoto.
    2. Is there a particular reason why you chose not to 'Copy Files to the iPhoto Library Folder...' I've yet to meet a good reason not to, unless you're using two photo organisers.
Some notes on this system: You become totally responsible for file management. Importing, deleting become more complex, migrating is also more complex. While iPhoto will not copy in the Original files, it will still create aliases to these files, still create a folder for modified versions, still create a folder of thumbnails. That's just the nature of the beast.
i just hooked a camera to itunes (sic) for th efirst time and imported. the pref still says dont import.
Where did you import these pics too? iPhoto? From the camera card? That won't work. You need to first copy the pics to the location you choose and then import them - that's what I mean by importing being more complex.
As for having dupes elsewhere: If you copy them into the iPhoto Library Folder then... delete them? Alarming? Perhaps. Don't do it immediately, leave it for a few weeks until you feel confident with iPhoto.
    Some other comments:
    1. You can quickly recreate your current folder structure in iPhoto - simply drag your folders of images to the Source (or left-hand) pane. iPhoto will import them and create an album of the same name. You cna then create the enclosing folders in iPhoto (File -> New Folder)
    2. Many people are concerned that finding files will be difficult if they allow iPhoto to copy the files in... There are three ways (at least) to get files from the iPhoto Window.
    1. Drag and Drop: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. File -> Export: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. Show File: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
Rolls in the iPhoto Window (View -> Film Rolls) correspond exactly with the Roll Folders in the Originals Folder in the iPhoto Library Folder. You can move photos between Rolls, you can rename rolls, edit them, create them, as long as you do it via the iPhoto Window. Check out the Info Pane (wee 'i', lower left) the name and date fields are editable. Edit a Roll Name using the Info Pane, the Roll Folder in iPhoto Library Folder/Originals will also have the new name.

  • ITunes no longer adds new photos to my iPad

I have two iPad Airs running IOS 8.1.1.  I added some photos to Aperture and went to sync them to the iPads with iTunes on my Mac.
I have 38,000 photos on these, so this isn't a new process.  I am running the latest versions of IOS and iTunes on my iMac which runs Yosemite.
The last month's worth of photos uploaded to one iPad, but I can't update them on the other.  There's room left to do so, but it completes the sync process normally, but the photos are not updated.   I don't want to wipe the misbehaving iPad since it takes a long time to replace 38k photos.
    Anybody have any ideas?

Nevermind - rebooting the iMac and the iPad "magically" resolved the problem and the photos are copies correctly.

  • Itunes no longer recognizes iphone

    Hi everyone,
I'm having a big problem synching my iphone 5 with iTunes 11.1.4.62 on my Windows 8.1 laptop. It started two days ago when I tried to add a couple albums to my phone (via cable) and noticed that it was synching about 5 times slower than usual. I figured that it must be synching over wifi instead of the cable and noticed that under the "summary" tab, "sync this iphone over wifi" box was checked. I unchecked that box to switch back to the cable, figuring that I must have checked it by accident. A second after unchecking that box, the entire iphone interface disappeared including the "iPhone" button in the top right corner. From that point, iTtunes on my laptop won't recognize my phone any more, period. I rebooted both devices multiple times, re-installed itunes, deleted and installed itunes all over, etc.  At the Genius bar they told me that my phone works perfectly and it's a software issue. Other than this, iTunes works and plays music fine. It's super inconvenient though, and at this point I'm thinking of doing a full system restore to wipe out all traces and re-install itunes again. Thought I'll ask if I should try anything else first. Any ideas?

Welp, I fixed it without any drastic measures!
    here's what to do:
    1. Open the device manager (found on the control panel)
    2. Clisk on "portable devices" (about 2/3 down the list)
    3. Right-click "Apple iPhone" and click "update driver software"
    4. When prompted, browse for the driver folder, which should be found under C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\Drivers
    5. Restart itunes

  • ITunes no longer sees iPhone

Suddenly, after I upgraded to Leopard, iTunes ceased launching when I plugged in the phone. The phone charges, but iTunes does not see it. iPhoto does, but iTunes does not. I reset the phone, reinstalled iTunes, and restarted the computer, to no avail. I also upgraded iPhoto.
I have two computers, a Macbook and a Mac Pro, both synced to the phone. The odd thing is, when I updated iPhoto on the Mac Pro, iTunes could see the phone again. It still doesn't work on the Macbook, though.

I had the exact same problem and I was getting really frustrated after spending several hundred dollars to upgrade to OS X 10.5 and iLife '08 only to find I couldn't synch my iPhones, I have two. However reinstalling iTunes on all my machines, G4, PowerBook, and G5 solved the problem. I did encounter once glitch. One of my iPhones didn't have the latest software and I needed to synch with iTunes before the upgrade worked. I'm all good now.

  • New update - Itunes no longer recognises IPhone

    Hi all,
I just upgraded my version of itunes last night on Windows XP Home. After I rebooted and installed the new version my Iphone does not show up in itunes. I tried re-authorizing the computer, rebooting, uninstalling/deleting the folders and i've also tried installing an older version of itunes.
Nothing seems to be working. Any one have any ideas????
    thanks in advance,
    Mark

Called support and they helped get it all straightened out.

  • IPhone photo file name. Can you change them to the date?

Maybe this isn't possible. But I would really like to know if there is any way to change the way the iphone files the pictures that you take with the camera.
For example when you take a picture its stored in the iphone as "IMG_001". I really need to make it so its the date and time for example "08-18-08_1424".
Let me know I really appreciate it

As far as I know, there is not a way to do this.
Perhaps there is an app in the App Store.
    Sorry, I don't know more.

  • HT4859 Faulty iCloud Restore, faulty iPhoto-itunes-iphone sync, how to restore iphone photos?

I just updated my iphone from IOS 6.0.1 to IOS 6.0.3 because my internet tethering could not work, but now Icloud is faulty and does not restore my photos, and yet is taking up 4GB of space... Anyone knows how I can download my photos?
Additionally my iTunes no longer have the 'photo's section so i could not sync my iphoto's photo into my iphone. So my iphone is left with 100 photos from the photo stream( Which i am unsure where it came from).
Thank you so much for taking the time to read and help me.

iPhoto should have prompted you after it finished the import, asking if you want to delete. It does in mine -- version 9.5.1
One way to quickly delete the photos still on your phone is to connect the phone to your Mac and open Image Capture. It allows you to select and delete photos from the camera roll without importing them via Image Capture.

  • Sort photos by name

Not sure what I'm missing here.
Basically I had a project full of photos imported from a camera, and also some others added from photostream from my iPhone.
I have now added the photostream in iyts entirity, thinking I would be able to order the photos by name and go through and remove duplicates from the project.
By default, Aperture has added the recently added photos from photostream after all the photos that were already there.
I thought to reorder I just had to Right Click the project name, then select Keep Arranged By > Name.
    Bu this isn't doing anything.
I've tried selecting all the photos I want to sort, then trying.
I've tried creating an Album in the Project, but still no joy.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks!

The Keep arranged by that you get when you right click a project actually has to do with how folders and albums in that project are arranged when you look at them in the Library tab of the inspector. It doe not apply to the images in the project.
To sort the images in the project open a browser on the project and use the  sort pulldown.

  • Basic Syncing of iPhone Photos

This is going to seem like a no brainer, but I have few basic questions about how the iPhone syncs photos. (I have read the manual, but what I've read doesn't address my questions.)
#1. Out of the box, after having taken some photos with the iPhone, does a normal sync between the iPhone and iTunes place those photos on my Mac? If so, where are they placed? (For further clarification, I have not turned on "Sync Photos From" in iTunes.)
#2. If they are not synced to my Mac, is there a way to sync them to my Mac without using iPhoto?
#3. Is there a way to upload photos to my iPhone without using iPhoto?
    Thanks

    You're welcome.
I never synced photos to the iPhone when I purchased it, so if I don't use iPhoto iTunes hammers all my iPhone photos.
I responded to this copied from your previous post.
This is not something I want to do, so how do I go about uploading photos to my iPhone without wiping out all my existing photos on the iPhone.
If you haven't transferred any photos from your computer to the iPhone yet, there are no photos on your iPhone unless you've captured photos with your iPhone. Photos transferred from your computer to the iPhone do not affect photos captured by your iPhone. These are separate.
Sorry but what does "iTunes hammers all my iPhone photos" mean?
So, since I've used Image Capture to copy the iPhone photos to my Mac, can I now place these photos in the 'sync' folder and sync the copied photos, and the photos I want to upload all at the same time?
    Yes.
This is what I do with iPhoto. I import photos captured by the iPhone into iPhoto, and then erase the photos from the iPhone after the import process is completed. If I want any of these photos available on the iPhone for viewing, I place the chosen photos in an iPhoto Album that I transfer to the iPhone.
You can do the same thing but manually with created folders than contain the photos you want available on your iPhone. Place multiple folders that contain photos in a "parent" folder. Select the Parent folder under the Photos tab for your iPhone sync preferences.

  • ITunes can no longer find my iPhoto - no iPhone photo sync ability...help!?

Hello...okay, some data - I am currently running Lion and all the latest software updates, I am also running multiple users on this iMac, I am also sharing the iPhoto library using the "Shared Library" method.  My wifes iPhone (via her own account on the iMac) does access the iPhoto library properly from iTunes and she IS able to choose certain albums to sync (instead of the "All photos,..." option).  I cannot.  Please see the screenshot I took:
Please note that the "Selected albums,..." option is greyed out and despite the radio button on "All..." being selected, no photos sync, ala, the error message.
It's as if my iTunes account no longer sees the Shared iPhoto file and refuses to "reconnect" to it...
iPhoto runs fine and launches from my account without issue...even launches when I connect my iPhone and download photos and videos.  So, like I say, I feel like it's iTunes no longer thinking I have a valid iPhoto running.
Both my iPad and iPhone give me this message.  Think it has something to do with permissions, but have run a permissions fix both from the Disk Utility and from booting holding down the Command +R method, and then using Utilities, Terminal and Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs.
I feel like my whole user account is kinda screwed ever since the migration to Lion, but a Lion reinstall did not fix it and I am not quite ready to start from scratch with a new userID...
    Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance.

Locate and remove the iPod Photo Cache folder(s). A new one will be recreated the next time you sync Photos with your iPhone, iPad, or iPod. Deleting this folder will not remove the original images from your library, but may solve your sync problem.
