ITunes no longer reading my iPod

This is my first post, so please tell me if this should go in another forum.
Anway, out of the blue today, iTunes can no longer read my iPod. I've looked around the web for similar complaints, but haven't come across a solution. I did see that a recent iTunes update caused quite a few problems, but I hadn't had any until today. Should I uninstall iTunes and try downloading and installing it again? If I did that, and it worked, would the music on my iPod show up, or would it try to wipe it clean? I've got a LOT of songs on it and don't won't to risk having it erased. Thanks in advance.

My PC/iTunes is no longer reading my iPod when I connect it?  Help

Are you using a USB card reader? If so and it still doens't work try doing some basic resets including. SMC and PRAM resets and restarting in Safe Mode.
    SMC RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
    Release the power button.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
    PRAM RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

  • ITunes won't read my iPod Classic, but Windows does; tried many solutions!

    Hey Apple Support Community,
I wasn't sure whether this post belonged in the iPod forum or the iTunes forum as the matter concerns both, so I decided to post in both forums. My apologies if this is 'spammy'. (iPod forum is a little old anyway).
I just dug up my 6 year old iPod Classic from the grave and would like to start using it again as my HTC's headphone jack is extremely faulty lately. My iPod Classic is completely empty - I have no music, no photos, nor videos on it.
My problem is that on my Windows 8 Laptop, Windows is able to read the iPod, however, iTunes cannot. I went over to the Support page and tried almost every recommended solution out there, and nothing seems to work.
    I have:
    Tried different USB ports
Performed a Restore/Recovery after selecting 'Format' from Windows ExplorerIt is interesting to note that, whilst iTunes doesn't read the iPod normally, it did show up in the button (Spotlight button?) next to the iTunes button when performing a Restore
Uninstalled and Reinstalled every Apple application and program from my Laptop, including iTunes, Mobile Support, Bonjour, and more, and also, deleting any remaining folders related to Apple.
I have tried alternatives to iTunes such as CopyTrans and Syncios, but all seem to fail.
    Troubleshooted my iPod various times
Restarted any Apple related Service as well as any Processes from Task Manager
Searched for Updates on Device manager -> Apple Driver and everything is up to date
    It's worth pointing out that:
When opening the iPod folder in Windows Explorer (after enabling Hidden Folders), inside the 'iPod_Control' folder, there is no 'Music' folder; not sure if this is intentional or simply because there is no music file on my iPod.
The Software Version (which displays prior selecting 'Restore') is 2.0.1. If this is outdated, the option to Update Software is greyed out and unavailable.
My iTunes is up to date.
iTunes does tend to freeze up when attempting to read the device, but is perfectly fine after a while, it just does not display the device (implying it must have failed to detect it).
It is the first time using iTunes on this laptop (laptop is 4 months old), and has never had an Apple Device connected to it before.
iPod and iTunes used to work fine 6 years ago on a different PC which is no longer at me.
If anyone could shed some light on this problem, I would greatly appreciate it. Please do not hesitate for any further information related to both iPod or Laptop.

Hey, thanks for your reply. I ran Diagnostics and the results are as follows:
    Retracts: 38
    Reallocs: 56
    Pending Sectors: 8
    PowerOn Hours: 165
    Start/Stops: 12666
    Temp: Current 29C
    Temp: Min 15C
    Temp: Max 52C
I heard that a large number of Reallocs is bad; not sure if 56 qualifies as a large number. Would this somehow interfere with iTunes not being able to read the iPod?
EDIT: Your instructions say to attempt another Diagnostics after updating however my iPod will not update past 2.0.1 (I believe that is the last update that came out for iPod Classics), unless you'd like me to recover/restore it and then try again.

  • Just downloaded update 11.1.4 and my itunes no longer syncs with Ipods or Iphones. What do I do?

Just downloaded itunes update 11.1.4  and now my itunes no longer syncs with ipods or iphones.  What do i do?  Should i uninstall new update?  and how?

I am having the same issues with my iPhone 4 and iPad 2 not mounting within iTunes every since the iTunes update. I know my USB is working but this is crazy. I had a thought and redowned the updater 10.6.8 thinking it was a bad install still the same issues. Sorry I couldn't help. I am also looking for the answers.

  • After our computer crashed, itunes no longer recoginizes our ipods. How can I fix this problem?

After our computer crashed, itunes no longer recoginizes our ipods. How can I fix this problem?

Okay, update on my previous message:
I have replaced my iTunes-folder with a back-up version of the old one. Luckily this turned my podcasts back to normal and replaced the new 'library' with the old one.
This also solved the problem of having to erase your iPod or iPhone, which is no longer necessary.
    So my solution is:
    1. back-up your iTunes folder (located at 'User/Music/iTunes/')
    2. remove iTunes 9.0.3 completely (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1224)
    3. drag the iTunes folder back to the Music folder
    4. Re-install iTunes 9.0.3.
    It worked for me.

  • ITunes no longer reads my iPhone or iPad when plugged in.  I have iCloud but some teaching mp3 no longer transfer from computer to devices.

For years I have been able to share all my audio files between my phone, pod, & iPad.  Since iCloud and Match, iTunes no longer transfers mp3 files that it sees as not music.  When I do plug in my iPhone and iPad, iTunes no longer reads my iPhone and iPad as a device.  How can I get my mp3 files that are teaching tapes back on my mobile devices?
    Respectfully,

  • IPod shows no music, iTunes no longer reads iPod

I have a 4th generation 40gig iPod (non-colour). Yesterday, I plugged it into my MacBookPro, it loaded my iTunes, and I manually added a couple of songs and made a new iPod playlist. I then spent some time going through my old iPod playlists and listened to a bunch of music directly from my iPod. When I was done, I hit the eject button in iTunes, waited for the "DO NOT DISCONNECT" message to disappear, and disconnected my iPod. When I did so, I found that it was completely devoid of music. I tried plugging it back into my computer, and I was met with a message telling me that iTunes cannot read my iPod, and a suggestion to restore my iPod from the summary window.
My music is not all in one place, after switching computers a few times, so I'd prefer to avoid restoring, if at all possible. Not only that, but my playlists are really valuable to me. I want to get those back. I have accessed my iPod on my desktop and it shows me that I have 10 gigs of space left, plus I accessed the hidden folders under "iPod_controls" that shows a bunch of .mp3 files, so I know that SOMETHING is still there. I tried using Stellar Phoenix iPod Recovery, but I could only run it in the setting that scanned for file types, and it only recovered about 1/5th of my music (I don't think it recovered any playlist files, either). I have seen the article about manually copying files from the iPod onto a hard drive, but it seems to only cover the actual music files. Is there any way I can manually copy the library-specific files so that I can retain my playlists, at the very least?

And I clearly have posted this in the wrong section. Sorry. I always think of my iPod as a "classic" and I forget that it's actually not the same thing as an older iPod. I'm reposting this in the general iPod board.

  • ITunes no longer shows my iPod classic.  do I show it in iTunes and manage it?

I have just upgraded to Yosemite and the latest iTunes. But my iPod Classic is no longer visible in iTunes

Thank you. When I asked the question the icon was not there. I tried again a few hours later, before seeing your response, and it was. I have no time to  experiment this morning. So maybe it was just a glitch of some sort first time. I am reassured that the new OS and iTunes is still compatible with iPod classic and should recognise it, but worried that sometimes it won't.

  • Itunes no longer recognizes  my ipod touch.

I just updated Itunes (to 10.5.2.11) and now my old 2nd gen ipod touch is no longer recognised by the program. is my device simply too old to be supported anymore? if it is helpful, the Ipod will not update to IOS 5 either.

    Have you looked at these:
Mac OS X v10.6 or later: iOS device not recognized in iTunes after restart
iPhone, iPad, iPod touch: Device not recognized in iTunes for Mac OS X
Do you have another computer to try?  this is just to help see if the iPod is the problem.

  • Songs in itunes no longer showing on ipod

I had a number of playlists in my itunes. synching w/ipod was never a problem.
then today I got message that due to limited space on my pc's HARD DRIVE, that itunes could not do a complete sync, and that they would create a new playlist (called [my name's] playlist) and put those selected songs only (from my overall library) on my ipod.
so then my ipod showed one playlist only ([my name's] playlist}.
I then freed up space on my pc's hard drive.
once again tried to sync up my ipod w/my itunes. i also deleted that additional playlist that itunes had created. all my other playlists were still there with all my songs.
so i expected my ipod would then sync as usual, esp. since i just freed up space on my hard drive.
but no, then my ipod just showed an empty On the Go playlist. I can't get all my songs in itunes to show in my ipod anymore. also, when I DO now open up itunes, I initially get a message that says "songs on the ipod cannot be updated because all of the playlists selected for updating no longer exist" but that doens't surprise me...because the one temporary list that itunes created, I have since deleted. But all my OTHER lists are still there. So why isn't it syncing THOSE to my ipod?
Should I try the 5 R's to fix this?
    Tx!

Thanks. OK, I read that other post, but it's only causing me to have more questions. So I can't get that itunes-created list back... the one that I deleted. That's Ok, because all my other personal playlists are still there. Also, the problem was not that my ipod capacity was smaller than the amount of songs in itunes. The problem was that my pc hard drive was too full. I have since freed up space on my hard drive.
So what's not clear to me is what I have to do now to get my ipod to sync like it used to. I freed up space on my hard drive, so it should be able to sync again, as it used to, no?
    Thanks!
