ITunes not allowing update to 4.2

I have a 3G on 4.1 (8B117) trying to update to 4.2, and iTunes is not allowing it. I'm running OS 10.4.11 and up-to-date iTunes 9.2.1 (5).
When my iPhone is connected, the iTunes phone summary tab shows that an update is available to 4.2 and to click Update, as I have always done in the past. When I do that, I get a pop-up window that says: "This version of iTunes (9.2.1) is the current version." It doesn't open the window to give the option to install now, download, etc., as usual.
I have tried re-launching iTunes and re-connecting the phone, but no change. Would anyone have a suggestion as to what, if anything I'm doing wrong, or what a possible solution might be available?
Thanks.

You need iTunes 10.1 or higher to install iOS 4.2.1. iTunes 10.1 or higher requires Leopard or Snow Leopard. You have no choice but to update your computer's OS.

Correct. The 3G iPod does not have the hardware to support an iOS version higher than 5.1.1
To more easily find compatible apps:
iOSSearch - search the iTunes store for compatible apps.
Apple Club - filter apps by iOS version.
Starting when iOS 7 was releases, Apple now allows downloading the last compatible version of some apps (iOS 4.2.1 and later only)
App Store: Downloading Older Versions of Apps on iOS - Apple Club
App Store: Install the latest compatible version of an app
You first have to download the non-compatible version on your computer. Then when you try to purchase the version on your iPod you will be offered a compatible version if one exists.

  • My iPhone 5 is not allowing updating to the newest iOS version 6.1.3.

My iPhone 5 is not allowing updating to the newest iOS version 6.1.3.  I missed doing the 6.1.2 update before 6.1.3 was available.  It wants to install the 6.1.2 update, but, once I agree to the terms it tells me I can't because I am not connected to the Internet.  It is connected to the net, as proved by surfing and iTunes, both by LTE and wireless.  I have tried both a full shutdown as well as the most of the easy tricks to, like with apps updates, to get it to refresh.  Has anyone had this issue since the 6.1.3 release, and is there an easy way to resolve the conflict.

The next iOS update won't change this.
Are you able to transfer anything else from your iTunes library and computer via the iTunes sync process such as a movie, TV show, podcast, audio or print book, apps, and photos from your computer?
What is selected under the Music tab for your iPhone sync preferences with iTunes.

  • Why will itunes not allow me to download new software onto new laptop

    hi
wjy will itunes not allow me to download the new software to my new laptop, ive put my desrired email address in but it wont download

    Greetings BevAnneS,
After reviewing your post, it sounds like it does not recognize that iTunes is installed. It looks like you have already done some troubleshooting. I would recommend that you read this article, Don't uninstall these components in a different order, or only uninstall some of them.
Remove and reinstall iTunes and related software components for Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8 - Apple Support

  • Disable "check for updates" iTunes AND allow update iPad iPhone

In an enterprise environment we followed http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2102 to disable the "check for updates" in iTunes, although this is preventing users from updating thier iPad and iPhone devices as well.
How would we manage the Windows computer software (disable check for updates) but allow users to manage (update) thier own portable devices that require iTunes to update?

No.  For now we have decided to perform the default install for our users with specific instructions not to update when Apple informs them of an update.  When they see the pop up notification of an Apple update, they are to open the SCCM (SMS) "Run Advertised Programs" where we have packaged the new version to install with Admin rights.

    Hi,
If u set the block's update allowed property to false, it will not allow to update the data directly by user. But it will update the back end data. If u don't want to update the data in Dept block, write a trigger on-update in dept block and enter NULL; in that trigger. It won't update the dept block data. Try this.

  • Informatica checkout does not allow updates

    I am using Informatica 7.9.6.1.
I checkout a Workflow and am trying to add a pre sql to the target table object to change the parallelism to 4. But the sql popup is dark grey and will not allow me to enter the sql.
It seems as if I am in readonly mode? I am using the same password Administrator that all others use, and they cannot update the sql either.
Any ideas on what to check to be able to modify sql or even add a sql override?
    Thanks for the help!

I did get the presql to take on the workflow. I had to check out the workflow, then checkout the session from view history and checkout, then was able to update the session settings. In other environments, we had checkout turned off and simply could update all fields whether a workflow or session setting.
    Thanks again

  • ICal not allowing update/missing all calenders

I switched on my computer today to add an event and found it would not allow me to add events, or to even shut down using the close button. I could quit via the finder, but that was the only way. I then tried syncing with my MobileMe account, that didn't work, so I told it to replace with my MM calender. No luck. I read earlier posts on problems after an earlier OS update and tossed the cashe and tried restarting. Now I have a blank calender without the ability to add data via Sync or manually. The File menu only shows 'Create new Fortunately both my laptop and iPhone are unaffected, but I'd sure like to get my desktop machine working right.
This computer and all other equipment has been shut down for 3 weeks while I was out of the country. I did an auto update yesterday after I got everything running again, but did not look at iCal until today. I also tried to 'Restore iCal" but nothing happened.

    Lynda,
Go to MobileMe Support and select the appropriate country/language, then choose "Syncing with MobileMe." Next select "Troubleshooting MobileMe Sync Issues," and then select "Chat Now."

  • Nokia to NOT allow updates to Symbian apps

I dont know if anyone here has heard the news about the future of the Nokia / Ovi Store?
As of 1st Jan 2014 Nokia will not allow any new apps in the store, but even more worrying is the fact they wont allow updates for existing apps
This means that when facebook or youtube change the API's none of our apps will work and we will not be able to update them through the Nokia Store.
Im sure you realise the implications, basically all of our symbian / meego phones will be pretty much useless soon after January, maybe some 3rd party developers can issue updates via their own websites but who knows.......
And Nokia told us just recently that they would support symbian until 2016.
I have now lost all trust in Nokia

I am sure, in corporate board room, there was a calculation based on anticipated sales, device longevity, and projected move of customers to remaining platforms (WP8 and ASHA).
On paper I am sure those seemed sound to the people making the decisions.
In reality, they will greatly anger those of us who have stuck by Nokia and continue to use our well built symbian and Meego devices.
In reality, what ever minimal cost there is associated with allowing updates is greatly offset by the goodwill that it will generate by supporting legacy users.
A smart corporation would use this to their advantage.  Put banner ads on the site with WP8 devices, smartly displayed, advertise the new features, new apps, aids to transition to the new devices so that everyone coming to get apps/updates for their aging phone would seem them.  That way, you keep the goodwill of your current customers.  And give them a reason to want and move towards your new WP8/ASHA phones.  Wow do these people need to hire some good PR and ad people.  Bean counters make financially sound and consumer stupid decisions.
Instead of using this to their advantage, they will make users progressively hate Nokia/MS.  Eventually after January 1, Facebook or Twitter or some other services will change their API.  Without the ability to fix the current app, it will be broken and remain broken.  Now, every time you go to use it, you will think very bad things about Nokia and especially Microsoft.  That is how the mind works.  You will not think, "I need to buy a new lumia", you will think "I will never buy Nokia again" and will go buy iphone, android, jolla, firefox os..... any thing but Microsoft/Nokia who you perceived as harming you.  That is just simple human nature and psychology.
But I am sure the corporate bean counters know better, right?
I will say honestly, when it comes time to replace my N9, I will look elsewhere.  The sad part of all this is that prior to this announcement I still had positive feelings about Nokia and Microsoft.  Those end January 1.

  • OS 10.3.9 not allowing updates or software installation

I'm not sure what's going on, but my year old Powerbook G4 is not allowing me to do automatic updates, or to install new software. I just got an iPod, but I cannot use it because I cannot install the software. Help? I'm not getting any error messages, except that the installation could not be completed. It seems to be able to download the updates, but not install them.
    Thanks, Anne

    Anne,
I have one question and one suggestion for troubleshooting.
You say that you cannot install new software. Do you mean that you cannot install via Software Update? If you download a file from Apple's download site, and then double click on the disk image, does that also fail?
The suggestion - see if you can get some sort of error message from your console log file. To do that -
-start the console app from the utilities menu
    - make sure that the console.log file pops up - if not, use the logs icon at the top left to select console.log
    - run Software Update
    - when it fails, it probably will write something to the log file
    - if so, please copy and paste into another post

  • App store not allowing update

I bought Aperture 3 in the App Store and now it's not allowing me to upgrade.  When I try, it gives me this dialog  "To update this application, sign in to the account you used to purchase it."
The trouble is, I am in the only account that I have, and the one I used to purchase the application.
To complicate things I did have HDD trouble and updated the HDD by putting in the new HDD, installing Snow Leopard, upgrading to 10.6.8 and then using the migration assistant to move everything over from the old HDD.
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.
    Thanks,

I saw in another thread that this problem can be solved by quiting App store, deleating Aperture (The App only) and then restarting the App Store.  Instead of "Update" it will now say "Install"
Install Aperture 3 again, start it up and it will find your prevoius Library, update it and all will be corrected.  So far it seems to have worked;-)
Best to back up before this procedure, just in case....

  • Error message: libsmime3.dylib is in use and will not allow update

I tried to download the new firefox 5.0, for Mac OS10
when I put it into the application folder the error message showed up:
libsmime3.dylib is in use and would not allow new version to replace old
I have restarted the computer several times and still the same

I found [http://siliconchaos.blogspot.com/2010/08/installing-firefox-4-beta-2-error-on.html this blog post] when trying to look up that error. Looks like a common cause of the error is programs like Evernote, Dropbox or Cisco's AnyConnect VPN Client. Try disabling those (the blog post has instructions) if a simple delete/replace doesn't help.

hmmmm. that might be associated with a skunky ipoddriver.kext file. perhaps the following documents might be of some assistance:

  • ITunes does not allow updates to iPhone and iPad

I'm trying to update my devices to iOS 4.3.5. Update downloads okay. However when iTunes verifies the device a message indicates the device is not eligible for the update. This worked before I upgraded to Lion. Firewall has been checked, iTunes updated to latest version, 10.4 I think. I have uninstalled iTunes and carried out a re install twice, and the fault persists.
Any ideas please anyone. This is very frustrating. Thanks
