ITunes not even recognizing that my iPod is even there

I connect my iPod classic to iTunes and it doesn't even recognize it is even there, but it shows in the iPod display screen that it is connected. Need to try to do a restore on the iPod, but cannot if iTunes doesn't even show that it is there. Any suggestions?

Hello afirkowski,
And welcome to Apple Discussions by the way,
What have you tried so far? Have you tried using a different USB cable if at all possible? Tried plugging into different USB ports located directly on your PC? Maybe try resetting the iPod with it still connected to your computer. To do this, toggle the hold switch on and off, then press and hold the Select (Center) and Menu buttons together until the Apple logo appears.
Otherwise, another suggestion, would be to force the iPod into *Disk Mode*. Doing so may at least help your iPod show up as a mounted drive in "My Computer" and possibly iTunes as well.

Lastly, I would continue working through the other recommended troubleshooting steps for this situation outlined in this Apple support document.

  • Computer not recognizing that my ipod is pluged in!!

I have recently reformatted my comeputer and got some new music put on my itunes and when i tried to plug in my ipod it just doesnt do anything...like the little screen on the ipod that usually sais "do not disconnect" doesnt come up...the computer doesnt even accnowladge that anything is pluged in...i tried downloading the newest ipod softwhare and that didnt work...i tried putting in the origional disk that came with it and that didnt do anything...also when i plug my ipod into the computer it drains the battery instead of charging it...suggestions??

I don't know if this might work for you guys but this is what got my problem solved. If you experience the following, the Ipod was working but suddenly it stops working (i.e. the ipod screen is totally blank no icons like battery low or whatever) and when you connect it to the computer the little sign that means do not disconnect does not appear (the pc does not recognized that the ipod is connected) then maybe this might solve your problem. Do not connect the Ipod to the computer for about 24 hours. Do not try to charge it or anything just leave it by itself let the battery drained then try it the next day and hopefully the icon of battery is low will appear then you can charge it by connecting to the pc.
This is what happened to me by accident i guess, i had given up and had realized that i had just spend two hundred dollars on something that didn't work but today i tried to turned it on and the battery is low icon appeared so i connected to the PC and now it works.
    Good Luck.

  • Computers not recognizing that my ipod is connected

Not too long ago, my ipod froze. It was left to die therefore it could be charged back to life, and the battery did die, but now it won't charge because not a single computer is recognizing that the ipod has been connected. I've tried more than one computer, (2 PC's, 1 mac - right now it's restored to a PC), i've tried more than one cable, and I've even tried to charge it in my boyfriends car ipod charger/tuner player (and his ipod works perfectly fine on it)!
The ipod turns on, so an apple is seen on the screen, but after a few minutes while it's still on the screen, it shuts itself off and says "Please Wait Very Low Battery" but I can't charge it! I'm so confused!
I'm very confused and would like to try to fix this asap!
If anyone has any idea what to do, please, I'd greatly appreciate it!

I received some help from my brother, and searched how to put the ipod in disk mode, and so far it has been charging and is showing up in my itunes!

  • Restore button unavailable, iTunes not copying any music to ipod since 7.3

I don't know if it is related to my problems, but I just updated to iTunes 7.3 via software update. I synced my iPod for the first time yesterday. When I went to browse the music on the iPod, it showed that there were no items listed under Playlist, music, artist, song, etc... The ipod has all of my photos, calendars, and contacts on it, but no music. iTunes is telling me that the ipod has my entire library on it along with playlists. When I go to about on the ipod itself, it says that I have 6 GB of music on there, but I am unable to play it. I have tried restoring on a different computer, restoring with windows and then restoring with a mac to make sure that everything is wiped off, but no matter what, my computer isn't letting me put music on this ipod. Any ideas?

  • ITunes not showing songs that are on the iPod Touch

I have an iPod Touch 4th Generation.
    I use iTunes 11.0.
I usually connect my iPod Touch to iTunes and play songs from there because I do not put songs in my itunes library.
I was doing this as usual and today when I connected my iPod Touch to iTunes, songs did not show up on the music tab of "On This iPod".
Just the previous day, I opened iTunes and there were all my songs.
Today, iTunes does not show any of my downloaded songs that were not bought from the iTunes Store.
The iTunes Capacity Bar shows that I have songs on my iPod Touch.
But when clicking on the iPod and going under the music tab in "On This iPod", there is no music other than a few songs, which were purchased from the iTunes Store itself.
I also tried third party software just today to check if I can get the songs off my iPod.
I tried using SharePod and it did not detect any songs, not even the purchased songs from iTunes.
There are songs on the iPod Touch only. I can play all the songs from the iPod Touch just fine.
They are simply just not showing up on iTunes.
How do I get iTunes to show the songs on my iPod Touch? The capacity bar says there are songs.
I tried SharePod a few times long before this happened, and it showed the songs on the iPod Touch.
I don't understand why all of a sudden the songs all disappeared from iTunes itself only.
(I would say this is similar to other issues where iTunes DOES show songs while the iPod itself DOES NOT. Mine is the opposite.)
Thank you for the help in advance.

I tried backing up the iPod Touch.
Now all the songs on the iPod Touch (except for the purchased ones) are turned to blank names and are skipped.
There is no name for each song or artwork, they all are called 'unknown'.
Only the purchased songs are left unharmed. Everything else is corrupted now.

  • Windows not recognizing that my ipod is connected

Right now im annoyed!! What happened is this! I got a ipon nano for christmas and installed all the software on my mums computer at home, the ipod worked fine. I returned to my house after xmas and installed the software again, and everytime i instert my wire nothing happens, the screen on my ipod doesnt change and itunes says that no ipod is connected. I tried uninstalling everything and reinstalling, still didnt work, so then tried installing updater, but asked me to connect ipod to update, still didnt recognize my ipod. I read through all of my leaflets and noticed that it said that ipod can onloy be installed on any one computer or apple device at anytime?
So yesterday i went into the apple store, and they played around with my wire as they thought it might be the problem, they were NO help at all, just told me it worked and theres and to go home and try it, needles to say it didnt work, ive just tried my wire in my friends laptop who is an ipod shuffle and it worked fine. Now what the **** is going on?? its utterly disgraceful that these things cost so much and i cant use it!

Okay, first, lets try putting the iPod into Disk Mode then it should be recognized by the computer. Does it say "Do Not Disconnect" on the iPod when it's connected?

  • TS1538 My ipod classic is sometimes recognized by itunes and a message that the ipod was corrupted and would need to be reset.

I have an ipod classic 120gb.  The other day it just       quit working after I downloaded an ebook to it.  I have tried 3 different computers with 3 different operating systems (Windows 7, Vista and XP) and I have received the same response from all after I hooked up my ipod to itunes (running latest version).  The message comes back that the ipod has been corrupted and needs to be reloaded.  I downloaded the software and it appears to be loaded onto the ipod as I get a message back that it is restarting the ipod.  However, after this "restart", it just appears to die and is never recognized by itunes.  I do a safe disconnect from Windows, closed itunes and bring it up again, but it does the same thing. The ipod does show up in my Windows control panel.
I feel like I am lost in some continuous vicious loop, any suggestions out there?  Thanks....

  • ITunes not Syncing Lossless files to iPod?

Itunes not syncing Apple Lossless files to iPod?
I had a couple FLAC encoded CD's, and i recoded them into Apple Lossless using dBpoweramp.
These Apple Lossless files load perfectly into iTunes (Playable)
But no matter what I do, I can't get iTunes to put the files onto my iPod. But from what I've seen, my iPod should support these files! (I tagged all the lossless files with a unique Artist name, and told iTunes to only sync that Artist. Even then it wouldn't sync.)
Ipod Classic 6th gen 120 gb, Software version 2.0.1
    iTunes version 9.0.1.8
    Using Windows 7 RC 64-bit
How do I get this to work?

Same problem here, same application versions. I'm trying to get them to sync to an iPhone but it doesn't actually sycnc. They play without issue in iTunes. I converted them from flac to Apple lossless using dbpoweramp.
    Any suggestions would be helpfull

  • Itunes not opening when i plug ipod in

When I plug in my 4G iPod touch, my MacBook (OS X 10.6.8) charges the iPod but iTunes will not open.  The iPod does not even show up in iTunes.  I have the latest version of iTunes.  I've tried using a different USB port, a different iPod cord, deleting iTunes and reinstalling iTunes, tried rebooting Mac and iPod, tried resetting iPod.  I really don't want to erase what is on my iPod because if iTunes still doesn't recognize it, I will lose everything.  Any ideas?

  • My iPhone 4 will NOT show up on iTunes, not even by putting it into recovery mode. Can anyone help me fix this problem? I would like to use iTunes with it.

I got an iPhone 4 on Thursday.
I connected it to my PC, a Windows Vista, that day and nothing showed up besides a "camera."
My computer picked it up as a camera, which I understand is a common occurence in the iPhone.
After browsing countless youtube videos and Apple Forum Questions, nothing helped.
I put it into recovery mode by holding on the power and menu button, but when I opened iTunes it still didn't detect anything.
I feel like I'm almost hurting my iPhone because I turned it off and on so many times, and plugged it in and out several times, and so forth.
Here is what happened after putting it into recovery mode: 1. A Windows "device locator" popped up. 2. It was looking for a solution to help me with the unknown device, or iPhone. 3. I clicked onto the find solution button, and it told me that I needed a disc.
--- I didn't have a disc, so I looked up this problem and it told me to manually find Apple mobile device support on my driver, so I did.---
    4. I then went onto Control Panel and clicked on SYSTEM and MAINTENANCE and went to DEVICE MANAGER.
    5. There I found my iPhone listed under USB controllers.
    6. I uninstalled and installed it several times.
    7. I then manually found a program to ease the problem. The program was "apple mobile device support," which was located on my apple driver.
    8. Nothing happened, besides it reporting to me that Apple USB was found and that "code 39" or "code 1" was in the way.
    9. I didn't know what to do with this....
By this time, I was about to give up on my iPhone and return it back to the store.
I tried again, but in a different way this time.
    1. I put it back into recovery mode and I opened itunes.
    2. itunes reported to me that some burning or CD/Drive software was missing and that I needed to reinstall it.
    3. SO, I reinstalled it several times, about 12 (iTunes), and nothing changed.
    4. I then looked up the problem of why the CD/Drive software problem kept popping up.
    5. I fixed it by going to my registry and adding an UpperFilter with the code GEARaspi...something like that.
    6. The problem was fixed, but still no iPhone onto my itunes.
I stayed up all night last night to fix this problem...I'm annoyed and tired.
I tried another problem to fix this.
    1. I didn't put it into recovery mode.
    2. My iPhone showed up under portable devices under "device manager," from SYS/MAIN"
    3. I did update software.
    4. I clicked on "apple mobile device support" but nothing happened.
    5. It reported to me of the Code thing again.
I even called the Apple people and they didn't know what to do, so I stopped calling them...because they only had limited options to fix the problem.
    Can anyone help me?

There's a whole lot to read in your post, and frankly I have not read it all.
Having said that, this troubleshooting guide should help:

In particular, pay attention to the mobile device support sections near the bottom, assuming you have already done the items above it.

  • ITunes not responding error message when iPod is connected

I cleaned up all of my music on my external hardrive. I moved the cleaned up librery to iTunes. I connected my 30G iPod and I reset the content on the iPod, but now I can not sync with the computer and Itunes frezes and gives me an error saying that Itunes is not responding. This happens everytime I connect my iPod; now I have no music on the Pod.

    hi joyful!
just checking. reboot the PC, and prior to launching itunes or plugging in the ipod, bring up your Task Manager to the "processes" tab.

  • ITunes doesn't detect that my iPod is connected

I plugged my iPod touch in today so I could sync it, and the USB found sound was played, followed by a USB error sound. iTunes did not recognise that my iPod was connected and would not sync it.
I looked in Device Manager and there was an exclamation mark over Apple iPod, and the following message was displayed:
"Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19)"
I don't know why this is happening, as I successfully synced my iPod yesterday with no issues.
    Can anyone help?
    Thanks

I am having this same problem. I have been able to sync before, but now when I attach my ipod, itunes does not recognize it. The PC thinks it's another drive letter, and itunes never shows it in the list on the left.
Any ideas how to correct this?

  • Itunes 7.0 says that my ipod cannot be updated

after installing itunes 7.0, whenever i try to sync my ipod with itunes, i get this message: the ipod cannot be updated, the required file cannot be found.
i was synchronizing and updating just fine with my 6.0. i have no idea as to why i am now all the sudden missing required files. any idea and suggestion lead to my ipod being able to sync and update sucessfully will be greatly appreciated.

I have a similar problem - only mine says unknown error -48. I can not find anything on this site that lists error codes.
Original problem was that version 6 just stopped working - just would not load. So, I went to to website, and found that there was a newer version, so I downloaded and installed that. It takes over 24 hours to import a CD to itunes now (as opposed to 10 minutes), and I can not connect to my ipod (see above). I tried to go back to the 6 version, but it said I could not as files had been changed.
So now I am stick with this new version, which I reinstalled, and I can't do a thing.

  • Itunes not working when i plug ipod in

I have resetted a ipod classic to the original settings and it will not connect to itunes on my windows 7 computer. A message comes up that says itunes not working and closes it down. What do I need to do to get it back and running so I can put music on it?

i believe you are using an apple device for the first time
once you connect your device to the computer, on the left handside in centre of itunes your device will appear
if you dont know how to add songs and other stuff, just look for it on youtube which will be easy to follow
