Itunes not finding my library after getting new laptop

Hi, I'm new to this so please bear with me.  The laptop I was using to sync my iPod touch died last week and after I installed iTunes on my daughters laptop, I can't find any libraries or recently purchased music.  If I try to sync my iPod to the new laptop, will it erase the music and playlists I already have on the iPod? Does anyone know why my recent music purchases aren't showing up in the iTunes folder?  Thank in advance for any advice.

Try this to copy your data and settings:
Syncing to a new iTunes library or computer will erase your ipod. Only if you back up your ipod manually before syncing, you can restore your device from that backup again. A manual backup does not include the sync process.
Disable autosync in iTunes, connect your ipod to your new computer and right click on it in the device list and choose backup. iTunes will backup your ipod without syncing.
Transfer your purchases the same way, choosing "transfer purchases" this time.
When you connect your phone for the first time, all media content will be erased. But you can restore your settings and app data from your manual backup afterwards.
Don't forget to set up at least one contact and event on your new computer to be able to merge calendars and contacts when you sync the ipod for the first time.
Music is one way only, from the computer to your device, unless you bought the songs in itunes and transferred your purchases.
There is 3rd party software out there, but not supported by Apple, see this thread: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2013615&tstart=0

  • Itunes not recognizing my iphone after the new update. Help!

Ok, so after my old dinosaur computer finally finished updating and restoring my iphone4 with the new software, everything seems ok with the exception of about 20 ringtones that didn't get restored over. So I go to replug in my phone and I get an error message saying "This iphone cannot be used because the Apple Mobile Device service has not been started."
WHAT???? I just updated the stupid phone for hours and now it does  this? So now it's not even being recognized in my itunes window. Anyone???

    Envision99 is nearly correct.
First thing to try is to re-install iTunes (download it HERE and run the installer) - but, there's no need to uninstall it first. If that does not correct the problem, you may need to remove and reinstall AMDS, as described in this linked kbase article.

  • ITunes not recognizing previous library after System Recovery

Hi - My computer was recently infected with some very nasty malware and the only sure way to clear it was to perform a complete wipe and restore to factory settings. I have always kept my iTunes music folder on an external drive so I assumed the files would be safe.
Once the system was reset and secure, I downloaded iTunes. When I 1st clicked on it, iTunes searched my computer for music and found only the few files that come with Microsoft Media Player because I had not yet connected my external drive. Tonight I plugged in the drive with all my music and changed the location of my iTunes Music Folder to its previous location on the external drive under the Advanced tab in Preferences, but iTunes isn't recognizing my original library.
I checked the Help in iTunes and tried connecting my iPod to see if that would trigger recognition of my library. Instead, it said my iPod was synched to another library and gave me the option of wiping it and synching with the (now empty) new library or only synching purchases from the iPod to the new library. Since my iPod is only synched with a fraction of my files, it seemed like this still would get me nowhere so I exited without doing anything.
So, how can I get my original library back? All of the files are right there on the drive. I should note that I also have an iPhone 3G which hasn't been synched since my PC was 1st infected 4 weeks ago. Should I uninstall iTunes and dowload it again now that my external drive containing all the files is connected? Thanks in advance for your help with this. - Scott

I haven't made any headway on my specific problem, but have seen many other posts on moving libraries from one PC to another or saving them to external drives before a reformat. I should add that the nature of the infection on PC was so severe that it was feared it would jump to (and then hide) in any external hard drive or flash drive so it could then re-infect any clean system. Because of this, I was unable to copy the original .itl file from my C drive before it was wiped. So, what I have now is the external drive which was the location of my iTunes Music folder as well as my iPhone Photo Cache and iPhone photos. I have a 40 gig iPod with all of my original playlists and a portion of my music (I only synched certain songs to manage space). I also have my iPhone 3G with a few of those same playlists as well as my applications. SO, the question is, can I rebuild my library from what I've got? If so, how? I've been searching for answers, but none seem to approximate my problem so any help is appreciated. Thanks - Scott

  • Itunes not playing entire song after installing new version

I installed Win7 Pro 64-bit and subsequently installed the latest version of iTunes.  Now iTunes is cutting off the last minute or so of my songs.  Why???

i had this too, the only way I was able to solve it was to rebuild my library, ***** but is the only way.
Most likely you will experience that new songs informations are no longer stored and it will run determination for gapless playback on every startup of iTunes!

  • Why is it so hard to get iTunes to find my library?

<rant>I don't understand why it's so difficult to get iTunes to find an existing library after a move. I wish I had left this alone from the beginning. Had I known it would be this hard, I wouldn't have done this.</rant>
I have tried to move my iTunes folder from beneath my home folder to the root. After following some instructions to get this moved (I forget the link), iTunes thinks my songs are in the trash. I verified this by looking at the iTunes Library.xml file, and saw the songs linked to the songs in the trash.
So now that I've deleted my trash, all of my songs are showing up with exclamation points, saying it can't find the original song. If I locate an individual song in the new folder, it works fine. But I have thousands of songs, and have little interest in doing this for my whole library.
I've tried manually updating the iTunes Library.xml file, pointing them to the proper location, but I've figured out iTunes doesn't really use this file -- it uses the binary "iTunes Library" (with no extension) file, which I can't edit (thanks Apple).
I've also tried the option+start trick to point it to the new library (at several different points along the way), and it still thinks my songs are in the trash, I believe.
I can only assume that this has something to do with digital rights, and them not making it easy to copy music, but for us legit people, this is really a pain.
So is there a way to get this back? Or, am I left to wiping out my library, and having iTunes import my songs from scratch, and lose all of my metadata and album art?
Also once again, why is this so hard anyway? Has Apple not seen the tons of blogs and discussions on this very topic enough to warrant actually addressing this?
    Thanks in advance.

    Thank Chris and Diane.
After looking into this more, it looks like after transferring my media folder, I also moved my iTunes library to the root following this article:
    http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/articles/comments/moving-your-itunes-library-to -a-new-hard-drive/
Somehow, something got missed (though I'm almost positive I followed that first Apple support article). Anyway, my fix was this:
    1) Move my iTunes media folder back to the exact trash location it thought the songs should be in, and confirmed that the songs were once again found through iTunes.
    2) Follow the Apple support article, relocated my iTunes Media folder from the trash to the desired folder in the root
    3) Moved my iTunes Library back to my home folder following the iLounge article above (move physical files, then option-open iTunes and point the library to the new location).
Once I did this, everything is as I wanted it.
By the way, Chris, the reason I want my iTunes in the root of my external rather than under the Home/Shared, is because I want my songs on the external, and my Shared folder is on my internal. I want to keep all my large files on my external.
Also, Diane, what I meant by digital rights issue, I didn't mean this was the cause of my problem, but rather speculating this was the reason Apple made it so hard to relocate your media files. Again, that was just speculation, I obviously have no way of knowing. It just seems unreasonably hard to relocate your iTunes songs (or even just tell iTunes where they are after it lost them) because Apple seems to try to make users' lives easier, not harder.
Anyway, thanks again for the help.

i can not get itunes to install and open on my new laptop i am so frustrated i uninstalled and reinstalled at least a dozen times in the last month
i got a error 7 this time but have had diff ones befpre please help

Will iTunes open in safe mode? Hold down CTRL+SHIFT as, or immediately after, you click the icon that starts iTunes and keep holding until you see this prompt.
    Click Continue.
Assuming iTunes has opened, enable the menu bar, if necessary, with CTRL+B. Then go to Edit > Preferences > Store and untick Show iTunes in the Cloud purchases. Press OK, close iTunes, wait until it has had a chance to fully close then reopen.
    Will iTunes open normally now?
If not, see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates for genral advice.
The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down page in case one of them applies.
Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there is backup and recovery advice elsewhere in the user tip.

That is not necessarily true. You are allowed to make a back-up of media you own and, at least in the Netherlands, even a copy of a work you've borrowed from a library. The law expressly permits this and you pay a certain amount for recordable media to allow for home use.  See http://www.thuiskopie.nl/nl for this.  If you then decide to destroy the media, i.e. do not transfer the media to someone else, I don't see how you infringe copyright by keeping the back-up. But I guess some so-called creatives like the idea of making money in all kinds of hypothetical ways...
It is a nice dream, where you have to work once and then earn a lot of money by selling millions of copies from your work. But buyers can make copies too!! Hahahahahaha!

  • HT1364 I recently got a new laptop but I can't retrieve my iTunes folder from my old pc, how do I get my library on my new laptop as I don't want to set up a new one.

I recently had to buy a new laptop as my pc no longer worked.  I can't get my iTunes media folder off my old pc so how do I get my library onto my new laptop as I don't want to create a new library and erase everything off my iPhone.

There is no such thing as a "sub-account."  Also, you probably mean iTunes library, when you say "account."  Your "account" in iTunes is your Apple ID, which is what you use to sign in to the iTunes Store to make purchases.  iPods are associated with an iTunes library, not with an Apple ID (iTunes Store account).  You'll need to clarify...
So, this is what I think you are saying.  You previously shared an iTunes library on a computer with your friend.  Your old iPod was synced to that iTunes library.
You got an iPhone, and at that time, you set up your own iTunes library.  Is that on a different computer?  How does the iPhone affect your question about the iPod?
You got a new iPod.  What is your "old iTunes"?  Is that the iTunes library you shared with your friend?

my old laptop crashed how do i get my library on my new laptop?

An external bay is something like this: External 2.5 SATA to USB Hard Drive Caddy Case
A small Philips driver is usually all you need to access the hard drive in the leptop. You (or a technically adept friend) remove the drive from the old laptop, put it in the bay, hook it up to your new computer and read what can be recovered from it. Your iTunes library would typically be in X:\Users\<User>\Music\iTunes where X: is the letter assigned to the drive.
There's a chance the drive won't work at all, but often it will work for reading data even when you can no longer get it to run your operating system. Seems like a small investment to potentially recover all your lost data, not just iTunes.
If the drive won't work, then the link I posted earlier explains how you can recover all the media and data from your existing device into a new iTunes library. Once you dont this you can restore the backup of the old device to the new one.

  • ITunes not finding album artwork

I'm getting a bit sick of this - why does iTunes not find any album artwork any more, yet it recognises the album & finds all the tracks? This seems to be a constant problem on this forum - anyone have any ideas...? I have iTunes 11 & a desktop intel Mac, OS X 10.7.

I wouldn't be in a hurry to upgrade to 8.2.
Make sure that the *Album Artist* and Artist of your album matches up with what's in the iTunes Store EXCEPT if the artist has an ampersand (&) in it. Then put in everything up until the space before the ampersand. (You're free to edit the info after you've gotten the correctly downloaded artwork.) In some cases you may not get the correct artwork no matter how you match the data.

  • Error "Could not find -Xrun library: libjdwp.so" when starting WL 6.1 in debug mode

    Hello,
I installed WL 6.1 SP4 on Solaris (trial version). The installation went well
and we were able to start the server and run our application. I then added the
debug options in the start script :
    $JAVACMD $JAVA_OPTIONS -Xdebug -Xnoagent -Djava.compiler=NONE -Xrunjdwp:transport=dt_socket,server=y,address=7212,suspend=n
When I then try to start the server I get the following error :
Error occurred during initialization of VM
Could not find -Xrun library: libjdwp.so
I looked and the library is installed in our sdk :

    What did we do wrong?
    Thanks for your help,

    Hi Wayne,
I took the instructions from our WL 5.1 installation. I hope the options are still
the same (if not can you tell me where to find the correct ones?).
You were right about the LD_LIBRARY_PATH. I added the line :
    LD_LIBRARY_PATH=$JAVA_HOME/lib/sparc:$LD_LIBRARY_PATH
and now I can start the application without any errors.
    Thanks!

Since libsjwp.so is a shared object, what does your LD_LIBRARY_PATH look
    like?
    Is /products/java/j2sdk1_3_1_07/lib/sparc in it?

  • Albums not showing in library after import

Just install iTunes 10.4.1.10 on Win XP (have same issue on Win 7) it auto added my music folder but its all messed up due to filenames etc so I deleted everything from library with the intention of manually importing everything.  Albums are not showing in library after going File -> Add Folder to Library...
    Any ideas?

Note that Pause and Resume can be found in the right-click context menu of an item (toolbar drop-down list).
Do you have the .part file or only the (final) file with a byte count of 0 bytes?
If the .part file and doesn't have the expected file size (2 GB) is missing then you won't be able to resume this download anyway. You can check the temp folder as well.
