ITunes not opening when iPod is connected, and won't restore properly? Corrupted?

I have a 120GB iPod Classic. Has not been jail broken.
The problem:
The other day I connected my iPod to my laptop, but iTunes wouldn't open with it- it always opens iTunes. After finally opening iTunes and reconnecting the iPod to my laptop, it took 5-10 minutes for iTunes to realise that the iPod was in fact, connected. It then said it appeared to be corrupted and that I had to restore it. So I did. Numerous times. Each time I try to connect my iPod it takes quite a while for it to register with iTunes, but it always says it needs restoring- when I already did just before it connected again.
When the iPod isn't connected to the laptop it says there are "0 songs", "0 playlists" etc. But in settings it says that there is 111GB left. So all my content is still on there, it just isn't showing up.
This has happened previously, but I managed to fix it and my content appeared again. When I fixed it before, I was able to get into it via My Computer> etc, but now when I try to open it in windows explorer it says something along the lines of "Please insert storage device into Drive G". After this, it comes up with a window saying "You need to format Drive G: before you can use it. Do you want to format it?"
I can't even delete the folders manually in windows explorer because it's saying it needs to be formatted.
When iTunes finally decides to display the iPod, all it says in the side panel is "iPod" with the 'eject' button next to it. No "Music", "Movies" etc. The screen that comes up says my iPod is corrupted so I need to restore it.
I can't do anything with it. I've also tried to see what I can try to fix with it in disk mode, but that doesn't seem to do anything.
Is there any way to solve this problem? I've looked in forums online, but nothing seems to be working or able to do. I've scanned my iPod for any viruses (with Kaspersky Internet Security), and apparently it's clean. I will also be scanning my laptop for anything.
I've had the Classic for three years now. I have the latest iTunes, and I run Vista.

after letting it sit for awhile my itunes finally decided to work, but it's running very slow, especially when i try to put any music from my library onto my ipod.

  • ITunes does not open when iPod is connected

Although the option is checked in iTunes for this iPod touch, iTunes does not automatically open when the iPod is connected.  iTunes recognizes the iPod and syncs work as expected, but I have to launch iTunes 'manually'.
Both the MacBook Pro and the iPod touch are running the latest OS and iOS available and iTunes is up to date.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,

    Hi again,
I couldn't find the answer to this question when I searched for it using the title, but once I entered the question correct answers from previous users' questions appeared.  Seems to be a problem with the search engine...
Anyway, I haven't tried Jolly Giant's solution because the following solution worked before I saw it.  Here's how I fixed the problem:
    1) Open System Preferences/Accounts,
    2) Click Login Items tab,
    3) Check if iTunesHelper is in list, probably not there (If it is then try Jolly Giant's solution.),
    4) Leave the Accounts/Login Items window open and navigate to the iTunes application, probably in your Applications folder, then Right or CTRL-Click the application icon,
    5) Choose 'Show Package Contents' from the pop up menu,
    6) In the new Finder window that opens, open the Contents folder,
    7) Then open the Resources folder,
    8) Find the file named 'iTunesHelper.app' and drag it to the Accounts/Login Items list,
    9) Close all windows and log out of your account, then log back in.
That should install the helper that checks if a device has been plugged in and opens iTunes as selected.

  • Itunes not responding when ipod is connected.

first i should say that my ipod has been acting slow the past couple days. if i'm scrolling through songs it will frequently freeze for a few seconds before moving on to the next song that i scrolled to. plugging my ipod into my computer last night i noticed my itunes page was black with a few words showing. after fiddling with it for awhile i unplugged my ipod and the itunes screen disappeared as soon as i did. today when i turned on my computer, with my ipod already connected, the black itunes screen appeared again. this did not make any of my computers other functions slower.. it was just annoying as i couldn't minimize it or exit the program. i went to task manager to try to end program but that didn't work. again i simply unplugged my ipod and the screen went away as soon as i did. i brought up itunes without the ipod connected and it came up fine, it plays music, and it runs smooth, but as soon as i connect the ipod it will freeze and i can't do anything until i disconnect. i'm not sure how to fix this problem and with the sluggish-ness of my ipod before i connected i started thinking maybe my ipod has a bug. i have the latest version of itunes installed, and i have vista on my computer. any help would be appreciated! thanks!

after letting it sit for awhile my itunes finally decided to work, but it's running very slow, especially when i try to put any music from my library onto my ipod.

  • ITunes wont open when iPOD is connected.. if it does... comp wont recognize

Evrytime I plug in my iPOD, my computer and/or iPOD either freezes, or iTunes wont open. This is happening all of the sudden. It works when plugged into the wall and my iPOD also works normally at work! UGH can anyone help
    HP   Windows XP

I think I have the same problem.
Like I just did a reset, then reloaded all my stuff, and then like and hour later I do an update, and iTunes tells me it don't reconize my iPod. Tells me to do a reset again.
iPod plays fine, off the cradle.

  • ITunes not starting when iPod is connected

New problem. Ipod nano 4th gen working fine until today (new 1 week ago). Today, when I connect with my computer (windows XP SP3), instead of auto-starting iTunes, the computer opens up a separate window for the nano (treating it as a drive).
If I start iTunes separately, it will see and sync with the iPod, but sometimes a separate window for the iPod will open up at the same time as it is synchronizing.
I tried resetting the iPod--no change. Restarted computer--no change. Restored the iPod--no change.
    Any ideas? Thanks.

That tab was already checked. In the meantime, I kept looking around.
I found a "run diagnostics" item in the iTunes help menu. I selected "iPhone/iPod connectivity tests." It showed that iTunes Helper was not installed. It linked to a web page that gave more instructions that seemed pretty drastic. So...
On a hunch, I went to the windows System Configuration Utility, went to the Startup tab. Sure enough, there is an iTunes Helper as an option to load at startup (but not selected). So I selected it, clicked OK, restarted the computer. Connected the iPod, now works perfectly (I think). Re-ran the diagnostics test, and it passes.

  • ITunes not Opening when iPhone is connected

My iPhone is synced to my home computer (Mac), but I often use my work computer (PS) to charge while at work. Before I was doing this, I had no issues with iTunes and my personal computer, but now when I connect my phone to my personal computer iTunes won't open on its own. I've read on another post that I needed to reinstall iTunes. I reinstalled iTunes, plugged in my phone and it iTunes opened. Problem solved! Two days later problem is back. I know that it can be fixed again by reinstalling iTunes, but I don't want to do this each time. Any help/ideas?

In iTunes > Preferences > Advanced > click Reset warnings and Reset cache buttons.

  • Having itunes open when ipod is connected

Nano 4th generation--iTunes always opened when iPod was connected to computer; now it doesn't and going to Devices and scrolling down Summary to "open when ipod is connected" is greyed out and will not allow me to check it.  Even going to the iTunes preferences does not offer this selection.

You meant that you can't place a check mark in the check box "Open iTunes when device connected" ?
Just do a little test: Click on Music and see if you can put there a check mark.

  • Itunes will not start when ipod is connected

3G nano ipod when connected to windows xp,, Windows Expoler opens and shows ipod as "M" drive. But itunes starts only when I click icon on my desktop and dose not start when ipod is connected. When itunes runs it sees my ipod and all works fine. I have the box under Devices checked to start itunes when ipod connected. Thanks for your help

    Hello Loggroller,
    And welcome to Apple Discussions!
Are you talking about the *Open iTunes when this iPod is connected* option from under your iPod's Summary tab? If not, make sure you have this option ticked as well.
It might not hurt to try and remove and re-install iTunes and all Apple related software using these instructions.

  • ITunes does not open when ipod connected

Since installing the 1.1 update, iTunes does not open when I connect my nano to the computer. Both computer and iTunes (when I manually open it) recognize the nano, so no big deal. Just wondering how to make iTunes automatically open.

Sometimes the Preferences get corrupt - if you set them off and then back on that sometimes clears the problem.

  • Itunes wont automatically open when ipod is connected

    Hello there
basically the above ^^ itunes wont open automatically when ipod is connected ive tried the 5 steps and ive also tried the whole tray and exit thing its not WORKING!
    all help much apprciated thanks

I have a interesting hunch that somehow Windows is doing something to you...
One thing you might want to see is if within Windows if the iPod service is running... As there are certain services which automatically get installed when itunes is loaded. These notice the device and loads the app..
Just for reference, here are my Windows Services and their status:
Apple Mobile Device - Started & Automatic
    Bonjour - Started & Automatic
iPod Service - Started & Manual
I thought that a 4th service existed, but can't find it...
Have you tried uninstalling iTunes and downloading to reinstall it again, that might help.. Or else it has something deeper do to with your computer itself!
That's about all I can offer right now.

  • ITunes not opening when device connected

About a week ago, iTunes stopped opening when I connected my iPhone.  If I then open iTunes manually, the device will be recognized and will sync.  I checked in the system preferences and my Login Items had iTuneshelper checked, but the icon was a blank piece of paper and on the righ margin there was a yellow triangle with an exclamation point in it.
I don't necessarily want iTunes to open when I connect my iPhone, but I would like to be in control of if it does or doesn't.
How do I set this straight?

Select the iPhone under Devices left side of the iTunes window.
Select the Summmary tab from the menu.
Select or deselect:  Open iTunes when this iPhone is connected
And from the iTunes menu bar click iTunes / Preferences then select the Devices tab.
You can select to have the iPhone sync automatically (or not) there.
Or, right or control click the iPhone under Devices then make a selection.

  • ITunes does not open when iPod Touch is connected

Prior to iTunes 9, I could connect my first-gen iPod Touch and iTunes would open automatically. It does not do that anymore.
Is there anyway to fix this?
    Thanks,

deggie: Thanks, re-installing iTunes worked. There must have been a problem with the mobile devise part of the program. Funny - re-installing is the remedy of choice. I must be getting old. Anyway thanks.

  • ITunes will not launch when iPod is connected

I've been having a problem over the last several days where iTunes will bounce a couple of times in the Dock, the black triangle appears below the Dock icon, but no window opens up and eventually iTunes shows that it's not responding. I am unable to force quit or kill it in Activity Monitor, and it prevents logging out, restarting or shutting down. I can kill it from the Terminal, and it immediately disappears from 'top' but takes several minutes to disappear from Activity Monitor or to lose the black triangle in the Dock. Trashing the plists for iTunes does not help, and Preferential Treatment and TinkerTool System both report that all is well. I ran the full suite of TechTool Pro tests, as well as directory maintenance and defragging. I also ran the maintenance tasks, disk optimization and pre-binding in TinkerTool System. I've repaired permissions with Disk Utility. iTunes appears to be working normally and without issue in my wife's user. Finally, after reading a post here, I tried unplugging my wife's iPod Shuffle before opening iTunes, and lo and behold, iTunes popped right up. If I connect it after starting iTunes, it's detected as normal.
So, my shotgun ammo is exhausted. Anybody have any idea what would cause my user to be unable to open iTunes when an iPod is connected, but the same works just fine with my wife's user?

    Nobody ever solved this

  • Itunes not opening when connected

Although I have the "open iTunes when this phone is connected" option checked on my 3GS - it is not happening. Any suggestions ?

I misunderstood your first post, I thought you had an "iTunes is getting confused" problem, but now I think it is a "Windows recognises the iPod but not Itunes" problem. There is help on that here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61711
But you haven't given a very complete description of your problem. You say iTunes doesn't open when you plug in your iPod. Is that a new problem and it worked before? If so has has anything changed since it started.
If you start iTunes yourself and then plug in your iPod, does iTunes recognise it and if so what are your settings in iPod options?
On the background processes, all you can do is check that they are running, you didn't say if they were.
