ITunes not permitting music transfer/edit

I am running an iPhone 3GS on 3.1.3 and iTunes latest version.
I recently had to wipe my computer completely (reformat) for various reasons.
When I re-installed iTunes and plugged my phone in, my device was recognised and all the drivers installed correctly. I can see all the music on my phone but not edit it in any way which is extremely frustrating!!
Is there any way which I can edit iTunes' settings so I can access my music etc without having to restore my iPhone (losing EVERYTHING on it) and start from scratch?
I normally wouldn't mind, but I have so much music on it that I have given custom album art to (manually!!) and I would be annoyed if I had to re-do all that again!
Thanks again for any help!
-Peter

This is one of the reasons why backing up the data on your computer is so important. You wouldn't be in this fix had you done so.
By design, the iphone will sync itunes content with ONE computer at a time. Any attempt to sync such content with a second computer will result in ALL itunes content being first erased from your phone & then replaced with the content from the second computer. This is a design feature & cannot be overridden. Because you re-formatted your computer, your phone sees it as a "second" computer.
The itunes content sync is ONE WAY: computer to phone. Disable auto sync when an iphone/ipod is connected under preferences in itunes(under the edit menu if using windows). Connect your phone, DO NOT SYNC, go up to Store>Authorize this Computer, then File>Transfer Purchases. Your purchased content will be transferred to your itunes library. For music ripped on your own or photos synced to your phone, you will have to use third party software to FIRST extract such from your phone BEFORE you sync:
http://www.wideanglesoftware.com/touchcopy/index.php
Make sure you have one unique entry in whatever supported applications you use for contact & calendar syncing BEFORE you sync. This will generate a merge or replace prompt when you do sync, select MERGE.
To avoid this in the future, back up your data.

  • ITunes not syncing music

    Hello,
I am having a problem with iTunes not syncing music to my iPad. I want to have my entire library on my iPad, this used to fit.
A few weeks ago I started getting an error, most of my music had vanished. I attempted to sync it back, but was told that there was not enough space on my iPad, despite no new files being added.I looked again and noticed something. I had 20GB of OTHER in iTunes, this is approximately the size of my music library.
It is fairly clear what happened, the music files were corrupted somehow, but were still there and taking up space on the iPad. So I decided to restore my iPad. First restoring and once everything had been wiped and back to factory setting, restoring from a backup.
This worked and I was left with only 1gb of other. At this point there was still no music on my device sync music was unchecked.
So once I was sure everything was up and running, I checked the sync music box... and nothing happened. It would begin synching, it would determine the tracks to sync for a moment... then it would quickly finish syncing without adding the music files.
    Does anyone have any ideas?

Have you authorized your new computer: Store>Authorize this Computer?

  • Why is my latest itunes not syncing music with my music on my iphone 4s with iOS 7?

Why is my latest itunes not syncing music with my music on my iphone 4s with iOS 7?

Here's what I did. If you have an existing playlist and add a song to it, drag the whole playlist into the phone icon. It will ask if you want to Replace the playlist..YES. In my case i added one song in the playlist to test it. It synced the one song and also kept all the other songs but it didnt run through every song, so it was really fast. This is what I would do...drag and drop. Also, I shut down my phone and started it again, before I did the sync. I hope this helps

  • ITunes not finding music files

iTunes cannot find 90%+ of my music files. I manually linked them together over the last weekend (yucch) and today when I went into iTunes, the links were all broken even though the .mp3 files were in the same directories as before. I can manually find the music files but that's a chore, particularly if I have to do it several times (not!). Any suggestions?

Well, you have a couple options. First shut down iTunes. Then unmount your HD. Then mount your external HD again, then after it pops up on your desktop, launch iTunes. Any files iTunes has that points to your ext. HD should play just fine.
Or, you can copy all your music to your ext. HD (if you don't already have it there), and simply delete your iTunes library (by removing your data files). You could then add to library, making sure you uncheck "copy itunes songs to music folder). This way, iTunes will only "point" to your ext. drive to play the music. If the drive isn't on, you don't get any music, and the "!" sign. If you have many playlists, this can be tricky.
As a rule, I don't go crazy with playlists, other than smart playlists. This way, you don't go nuts when you lose your data file, or want to do a clean update of your library. You'd be surprised at the times I thought I kept my library in tip-top shape, only to delete it and add the music again. I often find a song or two that I had hidden somewhere.

  • Windows 7 Issue: iTunes Not Locating Music

I just upgraded to Windows 7 32 bit, and when I installed iTunes again, even though I chose my previous library file, it doesn't seem to be able to locate any of my old songs. All of the old songs are there, they play fine once I go through the process of locating them, I just can't seem to get iTunes to recognize where they are, even with the previous library chosen. I tried calling support, but apparently my support since 2001 means nothing to them and so they refuse to help me with my issue. Is there anyone out there who can help me with this issue, so that I don't have to load back all 851 songs in my library?

Here's what I had to do. Hopefully this will help. First I copied my entire iTunes library to Time Capsule. Once that was done I redirected my iTunes folder in the preferences to the Time Capsule. At first iTunes couldn't find the songs at all. Unfortunately, without having figured out the next step, I dumped my iTunes Library files on my Mac and reimported everything back in to iTunes. Unfortunately, I lost my playlists. Once everything was imported though, I still had problems with iTunes not seeing the songs. What I learned is that I have to go to the finder and mount the Time Capsule as a hard drive to the desktop. Then open iTunes. Since then, I have had no problem accessing my music or movies over iTunes. And, as long as I'm connected to my wireless network I can play my music on my laptop anywhere in the apartment. No longer having to be connected to an external hard drive. I've also noticed lately, that iTunes is getting familiar with my settings and is already mounting Time Capsule to the desktop when I open and play a song. Hope this helps.

  • ITunes not working, music will not play, volume not responding...

For the past few days i have not been able to get my iTunes to play music. I can open the program and move around ok, even select a playlist. But when I hit play the song comes up.. but it will not play. I am also not getting any sound. Have tried to re-set the volume with the keyboard keys above the number pad.. but I am only getting the little shaded box with a blocked icon (little circle with backslash through it.) I can not turn on the volume, I can not get any music to play.. I have tried restarting as well as re-installing iTunes.. and nothing is working. PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!

    try these troubleshooting steps:
_*resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM*_
if no joy, try booting into _*safe mode*_, then reboot normally.

  • ITunes not saving music, playlists and apps on start up

Using iTunes 10.5.2 on Win 7 OS.  Everytime I open itunes all my music, playlists and apps are gone.  I can find and reload all my files and then all works well until I close iTunes and shut down computer.  When I reopen iTunes after shut down, everything is missing again.  iTunes will not keep my files in the software and I have to relaod everything again.  A real pain....

  • ITunes not displaying music, etc since adding new library

I have had my iPhone library on my laptop for some time, and could always see my list of songs in the Music folder on iTunes, list of moveis, apps, podcasts, etc. Well, we gave our son an iPod Touch for Christmas, and I created a new libary for him on the laptop, following the instructions on Apple's website, intending to hold the "Shift" key down when syncing either device to get the proper library.
However, as above, I can't even see my stuff anymore. The screen shows the folders on the left side, but the centre of the screen(where I would expect to see the list)just shows a kind of "introductory" message, for example: "Music. Songs and music videos you add to iTunes appear in Music in your iTunes library. To play a song, just double-click it." Then it gives a couple of options to either watch a tutorial on downloading music, shopping for music in the iTunes store, or watching a tutorial on importing a CD. As an experiment, I tried to add a new song, from the Music folder on my laptop. Afterwards the Music folder shows that one song. It still syncs, and when I check my phone, all of my songs are still there (I was worried they'd be gone).
I am tired of this two library business, it's a hassle and my son never really syncs his iPod anyhow. What I would like to do is get things back the way they were before (one library - mine). I have been googling this all morning and trying various things, to no avail.
If anyone could help me, I sure would appreciate it
    Amanda

Software updates to my OS seemed to have done the trick.

  • Itunes not seeing music and media on my iphone after transfer from XP to new Windows7  PC

Can someone please help me out here?  I don't know if I missed a step or need to do something else... I will be as detailed as I can without being too long-winded.  I have an old netbook running XP and got a new laptop and want to move over all my media and sync and use the new laptop.  I spent a lot of time reading about how to do this and here are the steps I took:
    1) Did a final backup/sync on old PC.
    2) Enabled home sharing on old PC.
    3) Installed itunes on new PC and hooked up iphone to authorize phone.
    4) Enabled home sharing on new PC and moved over all media (took FOREVER to complete this).
    5) Transferred purchases from iphone onto new PC.
    6) Exported playlists from old PC and then imported them to new PC
    7) Did a backup of phone on new PC and then tried to set up itunes to sync as it did on my old phone.
    8) Click sync and after checking for files to sync... Itunes says there is not enough space on my iphone to complete.
In Itunes on the new PC, I can see my iphone and my library matches when I click on the Itunes music library from the old PC.  However, when I click on music under my iphone, it only sees a single album that I recently purchased and also doesn't recognize any other media (movies, tv shows, tones) except for podcasts.
What is strange is that when I click on my iphone in Itunes... the status bar matches exactly what is on the phone in terms of audio, movies, etc with 6.2Gb of free space.  To further troubleshoot, I tried to copy over the itunes music library (xml file) from the old PC to the new PC with the same results.  I also did a shift start of itunes to choose the itunes library, still same result (didn't expect that to change).  I also uninstalled Itunes and reinstalled with the same results.
The music library paths are different on my old PC and my new PC not only because of path differences from XP to Windows7, but also because when I moved over the media from my old PC to new PC using home sharing... Itunes put media under the Itunes folder where I had it under a different folder on my old PC.
I'm afraid of doing a restore on the new PC since I have a feeling the backup might not work.  I could always go back and do a restore again on the old PC if it doesn't, but that means I would be back to the point I am currently at after waiting multiple hours of doing backup and restores.
What am I missing here?  Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!

so i went ahead and did a restore from the new PC and then a restore from backup.  looks like that fixed everything... a few playlists were messed up and so far as i can tell, maybe just a few minor issues.

  • ITunes not syncing music to iPod Touch?

I'm trying to sync some music to my iPod Touch 4G 64GB, but it skips the step after it checks tracks to sync. It's never done this before and I've unchecked, synced and rechecked and synced my music but nothing will transfer. It deleted all of my music I origonally had on it and most of my iTunes U videos, I'm not sure why or what to do.
My iPod is running iOS 6 beta 3
My computer is a MacBook Pro Early 2011 running Mac OS X Lion 10.7.4
    iTunes version 10.6.3

Never mind the issue resolved itself

  • Itunes not finding music

my itunes wont load up because it says, "itunes can not find the music folder, the defuslt location is in the my music folder"
my itunes folder is in my my music folder but for sumreason tweak ui cnt read the folder, i think my my music folder is not an official microsoft folder, is there a way for microsoft to make anothjer my music folder to put my itunes folder in?
    thanks

If you cannot see the ‘My Music’ folder within the TweakUI drop-down selection, proceed on to the following:
1 On the start menu go to ‘Run’
    2 Type in RegEdit
3 Navigate in RegEdit to HKEYCURRENTUSER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders
4 Delete any entry for ‘My Music’
5 Navigate up the tree to HKEYCURRENTUSER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders
6 Make sure there is an entry for ‘My Music’ and is pointing to C:\Documents and Settings\[username]\My Documents\My Music (you can edit the value by double clicking it)
    7 Close RegEdit
    8 Reboot
iTunes &/or TweakUI should now be able to find the folder.

  • Need help with library....Itunes not finding music !

I was going through folders on my hard drive, not using Itunes. I was looking at each of the album folders when I noticed that many artists had duplicate tracks, but the track name had a 1 added to the titles. I spent hours deleting thousands of duplicate songs. I have no idea how that happened, but it's finished & I have more drive space.
I then noticed a bunch of artists were for some reason, filed under compilations and not where they belonged. I copied the folders from compilations and put them in the proper artists folder. Now itunes isn't finding them, yet they are there on the drive.
Question: Is there anyway to have itunes go through my library completely to rebuild what it needs to find all of the moved songs? Thanks!

I'm sorry to say I have the same problem...sort of..I want to know if there is a fast way to transfer music from my music library to itunes...since I accidentally deleted the entire iT library...I wanted to post my question so I signed up here, but can you tell me WHERE in this place do I GO to POST??? how frustrating, I cant find where to post so I had to BUD in somewhere, and hope you have that answer..I'm sorry!!

  • Itunes not syncing music onto my Iphone 5

If I buy music straight from itunes on my phone it syncs Into my music library, though in the past week I've imported 2 new CDs on to my computers itunes and it works but it won't sync to my phone? I finally found the section 'on my phone' (or whatever it is) and I have over 100 songs that are 'greyed out' with a little circle next to them that are not on my phone. Why is this happening and how do I fix this problem? My won't my CDs transfer to my phone?
I hope that made sense :)

Also, some of the music I want to add to my iPhone will sync but some won't.

  • After iTunes upgrade, iTunes not playing music in Windows 8.

I just upgraded to the latest version of iTunes (ver. 1.1.2.31) on Windows 8.1. The prior version of iTunes worked fine, but after this upgrade, it won't play music. No error message, and it will play music videos. It says it's playing, and I can click from play to pause, but no sound comes out, and the bar doesn't scroll (so it's not advancing beyond 0:00 on the time of the song). Sound is fine on my computer, and I've even reinstalled iTunes. I also tried changing it to run as if on Windows 7. Nothing works. Any ideas?

Not sure why this worked, but I dragged my old iTunes Library file and iTunes Music Library.xml from the old computer into the new one, and it automatically worked. Weird fix, but I'm happy nonetheless.

  • ITunes not seeing music on new computer

I just copied my iTunes Music folder to a new computer. However the new iTunes that I downloaded on this pc is not seeing the music. I checked the path and it is pointed to the correct folder. If I go in and and do an Import the song will show up in the recently added playlist. Does anyone know if there is a quicker way to get these songs recognized? A mass import or maybe something else that I may have set wrong?
    Thanks in advance

When you moved iTunes to the new computer did you copy the whole iTunes folder or just the iTunes Music folder? If you only copied the music folder then you've left the library file behind and iTunes has created a new blank one. You'll get more information including the Folder/File structure in this article: What are the iTunes library files?
If you did copy the whole iTunes folder then you need to locate the original library file. Presuming you put everything in the default location, try holding down the Shift key in Windows when opening iTunes. In the resulting dialogue you will get the option to create a new library or navigate to an existing one. The default location for your iTunes library is in C:\Documents and Settings\Username\My Documents\My Music\iTunes\ (or C:\Username\Music\iTunes\ in Vista). Look in there and see if you have more than one library file (they have the extension .itl) If you have more than one try opening them in turn, you may find your original library is still intact: How to open an alternate iTunes Library file
If you can't locate the library (if you've left it behind and no longer have access to the old computer for example), you'll have to make a new one by going to File>Add Folder to Library and adding the music from the iTunes Music folder that you did move.
