Itunes not playing songs no matter what I try

I have just upgraded to a new imac from a geriatric G3. 1 replaced machine, 2 kernel panics, 1 reinstall of OS and 1 rebuild of iphoto later, I tried to play some music. My music is stored on a network drive which I successfully mount at startup. Initially I could play music happily but today (and so much has happened in the last 24 hours - see sentence 2 - that I couldn't begin to guess what's changed) I can play the first 40 songs in the library but nothing else in the music directories. I can play movies. I can play itunes store samples. If I try to launch itunes by double clicking on the song in finder I get an error -36, but if i preview the file in finder it plays just fine. I've reinstalled itunes. I've trashed the library and restarted itunes. I've even tried incantations and incense. I just want to listen to some music and Spotify's ads are driving me mad. Anyone have any idea what might have gone wrong? I'd be eternally grateful.

I ended up reimporting all my songs. Now I can't rip CDs. I feel another question looming.

  • I NEED DESPERATE HELP! ADWARE THAT DOES NOT GO AWAY NO MATTER WHAT I TRY

So I was downloading something to my computer and, of course, I got stuck with that Only Search thing and no matter what I try it DOES NOT GO AWAY. I tried turning off my extensions, I tried switching networks, I tried resetting safari. Deleting my history. Every. Single. Thing.
    And nothing works.
Pleas please PLEASE someone help me with getting rid of this I HATE having an adware.

There is no need to download anything to solve this problem.
You may have installed the "VSearch" trojan. Remove it as follows.
Malware is always changing to get around the defenses against it. These instructions are valid as of now, as far as I know. They won't necessarily be valid in the future. Anyone finding this comment a few days or more after it was posted should look for more recent discussions or start a new one.
Back up all data before proceeding.
    Step 1
From the Safari menu bar, select
              Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Extensions
Uninstall any extensions you don't know you need, including any that have the word "Spigot," "Trovi," or "Conduit" in the description. If in doubt, uninstall all extensions. Do the equivalent for the Firefox and Chrome browsers, if you use either of those.
Reset the home page and default search engine in all the browsers, if it was changed.
    Step 2
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    /Library/LaunchAgents/com.vsearch.agent.plist
Right-click or control-click the line and select
Services ▹ Reveal in Finder (or just Reveal)
from the contextual menu.* A folder should open with an item named "com.vsearch.agent.plist" selected. Drag the selected item to the Trash. You may be prompted for your administrator login password.
Repeat with each of these lines:
    /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.vsearch.daemon.plist
    /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.vsearch.helper.plist
Restart the computer and empty the Trash. Then delete the following items in the same way:
    /Library/Application Support/VSearch
    /System/Library/Frameworks/VSearch.framework
    ~/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/ConduitNPAPIPlugin.plugin
Some of these items may be absent, in which case you'll get a message that the file can't be found. Skip that item and go on to the next one.
The problem may have started when you downloaded and ran an application called "MPlayerX." That's the name of a legitimate free movie player, but the name is also used fraudulently to distribute VSearch. If there is an item with that name in the Applications folder, delete it, and if you wish, replace it with the genuine article from mplayerx.org.
This trojan is often found on illegal websites that traffic in pirated content such as movies. If you, or anyone else who uses the computer, visit such sites and follow prompts to install software, you can expect more of the same, and worse, to follow.
You may be wondering why you didn't get a warning from Gatekeeper about installing software from an unknown developer, as you should have. The reason is that the Internet criminal behind VSearch has a codesigning certificate issued by Apple, which causes Gatekeeper to give the installer a pass. Apple could revoke the certificate, but as of this writing has not done so, even though it's aware of the problem. This failure of oversight has compromised both Gatekeeper and the Developer ID program. You can't rely on Gatekeeper alone to protect you from harmful software.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination  command-C. In the Finder, select
              Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

  • Partial solution for iTunes not playing songs or playing partial songs

Like a lot of other people, my iTunes (latest version 6.0.3.5 as well as previous versions), would refuse to play certain songs, or, would play only the first X seconds of a song.
I had been thinking all along that the song was encoded correctly and now iTunes would not play it.
Well it turns out that the iPod will not play it either, meaning that PLAYBACK was not the issue, but ENCODING.
I have another computer on our home network...I encoded a CD with that computer (same version of iTunes), then transfered the files to the "broken" computer...with the newly encoded files from the other computer, the "broken" computer plays the songs perfectly.
So anyway, the problem is with ENCODING, not PLAYBACK.
Now I have to go back and re-encode about 30 CD's...the number of CD's I've encoded on the broken computer since the no-playback/partial-palyback issue first surfaced.
We all still have a big problem here in figuring how to get the broken computers to encode correctly.
    Hope this helps.

You might check and see what codecs are installed on your PC...
Control Panel > Sounds and Audio Devices > Hardware tab
    Audio Codecs > Properties

  • Itunes not playing songs....getting an error message telling me the song will not play and cant be found

I have had an itunes account for a long time. recently i turned it on to get new songs and realized that alot of my old song are not playing. it shows the file, but when i try to play it tells me file can not be found. please help figure this out. thanks.
    tommy

When you see a "file" in your iTunes library (inside itunes) it is not showing you the file.  Select it in itunes and then get info -  this will show you where  the actual file is on your hard drive under the "where" bullet.  Try this first for a song that is working.  It will show where your library is, and you can then see how your library is organized.
Now try it for a song it can't find.  You will probably get the same error, (can't find the file)  However, then use widows to search your entire computer for the file.  Hopefully by looking at the other songs that ARE there, you'll get a better idea of what exactly to search for.
Finally, when you "add" a song into iTunes, you can be given the option to "Copy" the file into your itunes library (recommended) or just leave a pointer (like a shortcut) to the file.  If you choose this pointer/shortcut option, it can be pretty easy to delte/move the files by accident.  If you move them, the shortcut/pointer will become broken.

  • ITunes Not Playing songs in library

Help!! In iTunes all the songs listed under the category of "playlists" will not play. I keep clicking on the play icon and nothing happens. BUT, if I go to the "music" category under "Library", I can click on any item and it will play just fine.
I have reinstalled iTunes and tried several other hints from the FAQ section of the support for iTunes page. Anyone have any ideas?

Have you moved your music around? Sounds like it's been moved and is not where iTunes expects to find it.

  • Itunes not playing songs fully

There are a few songs that itunes is not playing. The one I bought from the itunes music store. It will play about 18seconds of the song and the skip to the next song. I have the lastest version and everything. And when I transfer the songs to my ipod it does the same thing. How can this be fixed?
    Thanks!
      Mac OS X (10.2.x)

For the CD burner issue, you'll want to check out PatchBurn (MacUpdate.com has it I believe) to patch your drivers. It works for almost ANY CD burner made. As to the song itself, check to be sure the play time shows more than 18 seconds. A lot of songs you can "check out" before you buy, and they download between 15 and 30 seconds of the song with the EXACT same name as the one you can purchase. I have slapped myself once or twice when I checked out a track, and then purchased it, but like a fool, when iTunes asked if I wanted to replace it (the sample) I chose NO, so I bought a song and kept a sample of it only. That's a big part of why I quit sampling songs from the store.

  • Itunes not playing songs properly

Itunes is playing SOME (not all) songs halfway, then skips to the next track. Some songs are missing entirely (they're listed, but when clicked doesn't play at all). Some songs is half of the right song, then is mixed with another song from another artist.
This happened before I updated to the new Itunes, did the update but still the problem persists.
Anyone know how I can fix this?

I have the exactly same problem. iTunes corrupted my entire library, 20GB of MP3s, all of them play a few seconds and then go back to the beggining. Using a sound editor I can see that it actually copied the first seconds of all songs and added it to the beggining. The number of seconds is not consistent on all the MP3s, some play 2 seconds and then go back to the beggining while others can play over 12 seconds before going back to the beggining. This happened after I noticed some of my older MP3s had an old version of the ID3Tags, so I used iTunes to convert my entire library's ID3Tag to the newer version. This happened about 2 years ago and I had no backup of my original files. The only fix to this problem I've found until now is to manually remove this extra seconds from the beggining of each MP3, but it's impossible to do that with over 5000 songs.

  • IPad will not turn on no matter what I try

I have an older iPad first generation, which I bought used a little while ago, and it has always worked fine up until today. I had just used it yesterday, battery was nearly full when I put it away on my desk, then when I picked it back up off my desk to use it today it was dead. The thing is completely unresponsive no matter what I do to it. I have tried plugging it into the wall charger, plugging it into the computer, using the on/off button and menu button simultaneously to hard start it, and I tried plugging it into iTunes with the menu button held down to do the restore thing...nothing. It's all of a sudden completely dead. Does anyone have any helpful suggestions on what to do next?

Take it to your local Apple retailer.

  • Itunes not playing songs in sequence

hi folks - recently moved my itunes folder because i was changing backup external drives, and now when i try to play my music itunes only allows me to play one song and then stops completely. when i try to press the forward button it does not work at all, ie it wont move to the next song, so i have to manaully click on the next song to make it play. another very curious thing is that on certain places in my music if i click on the forward button it will jump many albums and songs up to an album that i just copied into itunes, which is the only album that will play sequentially without me having to do it manually. anyone know what 's going on? i suspect i did something wrong when i moved the itunes folder but cannot figure out how to fix this problem. any suggestions are welcome, thanks much.

Sounds like when you moved the music you broke things. iTunes keeps a database on where your files are stored and what details each has (Title, album name, artwork, ratings, etc).
When you did your work, you likely effectively changed the path.
Open iTunes, open Preferences, select the Advanced tab. Look at the path set under "iTunes Media folder location". If it does not match the current location, click on "Change..." and set it appropriately.

  • ITunes not playing songs from iCloud in Match

I keep 50% of my music library on an external HD. I subscribed to iTunes Match to be able to access my entire library when my HD isn't available (traveling, HD in sleep mode, etc.). But iTunes won't play any songs that are stored on my external HD when the HD isn't available, even when the songs were purchased on iTunes, and even when iTunes has matched them and shows them as "purchased." When I try to play the song, iTunes says the external HD isn't available, and offers to allow me to locate the song (which is impossible because I'm not near the external HD). Why won't it use the copy that's stored in iCloud? Isn't this the whole point of iCloud, i.e., to allow me to stream my music library from anywhere?
I have an active internet connection, and I've already updated Match and turned it off an on again. But iTunes won't play any of my songs from iCloud; only from my Macbook hard drive, which certainly isn't the point of Match.

Sorry Michael, but while this may not be considered a bug technically, it's REALLY poor design.  I have the same issue - I have too much music to store on my computer, so I store it on an external drive.  How does Apple expect people to figure out how to adjust for this "design"??  I'm an experienced mac user of over 20 years, and I didn't understand what was going on (aside from my external drive not being connected).  New iTunes/iCloud users are definitely not going to understand.  Saying this is simply how it's supposed to work is not acceptable.  Frankly, Apple has totally messed up their iCloud implementation - it's SO convoluted, especially if you have any iDevices.
For this issue, Apple really needs to change iTunes so that it's smart enough to stream music to a temp directory (and then have a setting in the Options in which you can empty it manually or according to a schedule, exiting iTunes, etc.), or at the very least, allow you to set up mulltiple libraries (which you can do manually, but iTunes doesn't track them at the same time).

  • Help Itunes not playing songs, slow to load

I'm running windows xp on a laptop, and itunes. It is the current version downloaded from mac. The problem is takes about 4 min to actually open itunes. When it finally does, it won't play any songs. I've tried reinstalling it, and tried deleting/updating my song folders. All other programs run smoothly on this computer, what could be wrong??

    hi Brandon!
there may be a few different things going on here (possibly more than one at once).
first let's check the start-up problem:
The problem is takes about 4 min to actually open itunes.
hmmm. have you been disabling any qt processes in your start-up? (i keep seeing that recommended in "speed up your PC" articles, but it will produce odd effects like this with itunes start-up.) see:
Frank Nothing, "iTunes 5 works, but takes 1+ min to start" #2, 02:04am Sep 22, 2005 CDT
When it finally does, it won't play any songs
first check to see if you're running itunes in a funny compatibility mode:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302478
... while you're looking at compatibility modes, check to see if you've got any
    b other
boxes checked (in both your itunes and your quicktime). there have been some reports of this causing odd system performance on PCs.
... it's possible that if any of those boxes
    b are
checked, you might want to check to see if any of your drivers are out of date. (excuse the tentative nature of this last suggestion. we're still in the early days of troubleshooting the "system" compatibility mode issues. still not sure precisely what is going on in the background of them.)

  • Itunes not playing songs in order

    Hi,
Ever since upgrading to 11.0 iTunes won't play an album. I doubleclick to play the first track of either an album or in a playlist and then after the song is done it doesn't move on to the next song. I have to go back and doubleclick again. Also, clicking the "next" button doesn't work either, it just stops the song. The shuffle is not on neither is the repeat icon.
Is this a bug that needs to be fixed? Because at this moment I cannot listen to an album in sequence on my computer and that seems like pretty standard stuff that a media player should be able to do.
When in my Music library, I click on a song and then click next and it takes me way down the alphabet, it will play that whole song and then it will go to another track further down my library. And then back up again to the second song it went to and then just loop between these 4 albums. I have 50 GB of songs in my library so howcome it's jumping bewteen only 4 of them??

Have you tried checking all the songs you wish to play? Normally the collumn for placing a check is the first on the left. This worked for me.
