Itunes not recognize 2nd gen Shuffle.  Tried ipod reset utility (requires windows 2000 or XP) but have Windows Vista.  Help?

How can I reset the ipod with windows Vista?

Put it on the dock connector, connect it to your computer, and charge it for at least 30 minutes then see if your computer can see it.

    LeeGalaxy,
The minimum system requirements for the utility are as stated in KB 305204
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305204
    System Requirements
    - Windows 2000 with Service Pack 4, Windows XP with Service Pack 2**
**iPod Reset Utility 1.0 is not supported for use with Windows Vista.
That said, some have had success, in using iTunes with Vista.
However, this article lists some important information on that configuration:

And you may be able to use iTunes to setup your iPod. Have you tried that?
Or were you attempting to use the iPod Reset Utility, as described in KB 305204, to solve one of these symptoms:
    - iPod will not play music, and cannot be restored using iTunes.
    - iPod is not recognized by iTunes, but is visible in My Computer or in Device Manager on a Windows PC, or in Apple System Profiler on a Mac.
    - iPod shuffle (1st Generation) is identified as a device in "Recovery mode."
    - iPod shuffle (2nd Generation) is identified as a "USB DFU device."

  • After 5 R's and Ipod reset utility, what next?

Nothing has worked so far to make my 1-gen iPod operable. (It has worked fine in the past.) I get a blinking orange light when it is plugged in to a usb port.
It shows up in System Profiler but not in ITunes or on my desktop.
The iPod Reset Utility either crashes when I run it or tells me I have "two iPods" attached to my computer, and that I should remove one. I do not have two iPods attached to my computer.
    Thoughts on next steps?

There are several different things to consider here:
    a) Disk Utility will only see your iPS when and if it's present as a mounted volume. Yours isn't mounting, it won't be seen. The fact that it's seen in the Profiles really doesn't mean anything at all.
    b) Disk Repair won't really do anything at all to a Shuffle.
    c) Re-formatting should NOT be done in your case. The only case when it's ever called for is a few cases where Windoze users have inadvisedly followed their own OS prompts to 'help out' by formatting this new drive that's suddenly popped up on their system. Even in those cases the Reset Utility will do the same thing and, beyond that, we're back to (a) above: If your iPS can be seen by Finder and Disk Utility then it can also be seen by the Reset Utility.
    d) You need to get to the stage where you can reliably open and use the iPod Shuffle Reset Utility. You might have to d/l a fresh copy of it, you might have to Repair Permissions, you might only have to log out to a Restart. What you DO have to do is to get it so that it will open and run.
    e) Once you do that, you have to make sure that you're exactly, exactly, following the instructions for its use. Severe cases absolutely require that it be run from a clean, fresh system start with nothing else at all going on, that it be given enough time to work, and that more than one run might be required.

  • IPod shuffle 2nd gen not recognized in Mac either Finder or iTunes (but is detected and works perfectly fine on Windows)... i tried using iPod Reset Utility, but no luck...

i've been working on this for the past few days, and still no luck... iPod Shuffle 2nd generation (i know it's old).... not detected in my home MacBook... but works perfectly fine on Windows....
i tried using iPod Reset Utility, soooo many times... and i only had twice the luck of having it formatted... but even though it is formatted, it still isn't recognized in iTunes or even in Finder.... other than the 2 times of having it formatted using iPod Reset Utility, i had seen all the reuslts, like: Error ressetting the ipod blah blah: iPod has been reset, keep plugged in, until reset is completed blah blah: iPod has been reset, unplug and replug your iPod blah blah... etc, i have seen all the possible effects of iPod Reset Utility, but still no luck getting it recognized in iTunes or Finder....
and then , i tried connecting it to a windows computer (but i didn't restore it from there, and just ejected it from windows iTunes), after ejecting it from windows, and then connecting it to Mac, it worked miraculuosly.... perfectly synced and able to put music and listen to them... ejected iPod... after a few minutes, i wanted to add some other music, but when i connected it again, Bam!!!! not working again... even after connecting to windows, it didn't work anymore... guess the magic trick has been doomed...
i badly need help... puhlease...  (^_^)

Hey, I hear ya and can sympathize. I have the same
issue. The difference is that my computer can "see"
    my ipod but it refuses to show up in itunes itself;
therefore, I can't put anything on the ipod (from the
computer) and vice-versa. Apple support is clueless.
This is very frustrating to say the least. Itunes
keeps telling me that my ipod is synced to a
"different" computer, which isn't true. It's the
same computer. The difference is that when I first
got the 'pod and used it with this computer (and
everything worked fine), I was running XP. I
installed Vista and after that, all the problems
started. If I ever get this resolved, believe me,
    I'll post something here.
I'm guessing that somehow, itunes "sees" what
computer it's hooked to by "looking" at something in
the OS. Change the OS and it "thinks" it's seeing a
    "different" computer.
    Try reformatting it.

  • 2nd gen shuffle seen by windows, but not by itunes on other computers

    Hi Everyone..
Im trying to help a friend out, I suspect his 2nd gen shuffle is hosed, but thought I'd confirm with others.
He's had itunes and this shuffle for a while.. worked ok.  Stored it for a year or so, and now found that when we plug it into his laptop, Windows XP will see it as a usb drive (and I can transfer files onto it as a flash drive), but itunes doesnt see it.
In mucking around with it for some time, I finally installed a fresh copy of Itunes over the existing one and when it restarted I was told the shuffle was in Recovery mode.. so I reset it from within itunes.  Upon restarting, itunes again doesnt see it.  I then downloaded the reset utility and tried that, again, doesnt see it.
I installed itunes on my win7 desktop, my wifes 1st gen ipod touch is seen a-ok, but my friends shuffle is not.. again, I can use it as a flash drive on the win7 computer, but itunes does nothing.
    Is the shuffle toast?
    thanks,
    cakes..

Not looking good if you ask me especially since the problem was persistent across two different PCs and the reset utility did not help.

  • 2nd gen shuffle not recognized by iTunes or reset utility. Strange blinking

Shuffle was working fine. My cat chewed the wire on the dock in half. So I ran the battery down and ordered another dock (well, not actually a doc, but a retractable aftermarket USB connector). Finally got the connector. Before using, I tried to turn on ipod. No light whatsoever, not even red. Plugged it in. Would blink red a couple times, then green a couple times, and then the blinking would stop. iTunes didn't recognize it. Neither did the reset utility. So friggin annoying. What should I do now.

Put it on the dock connector, connect it to your computer, and charge it for at least 30 minutes then see if your computer can see it.

  • I have 2nd gen shuffle, i am using a new USB to connect to my computer but the light does not come on and itunes does not bring it up?

I have a 2nd gen shuffle. I bought a new USB for it at the apple store last week. They said it would work with the the 2nd Gen shuffle. I have the shuffle plugged in to the computer now. It wont light up and itunes is not reconizing it. Please help!

I would bring it back to the Apple Store and have them test it out on one of their one machines to see if it'll work or not there.

  • 2nd gen shuffle not working windows 7

I connected my 2nd gen shuffle to my laptop (Windows 7) and it told me I need to restore it, but Itunes keeps crashing every time i tried. I restared my pc, then it stopped showing in Itunes but showed on devices, and was on. Now it does nothing at all, no lights or anything. Any help appreciated

I have two suggestions.  There is an iPod Reset Utility
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1238
that is only for the 1st and 2nd gen shuffle.  It does something like a Restore in iTunes, but works at a "lower" level in cases when a Restore in iTunes does not work (or cannot be used).  For it to work, the shuffle does need to be seen by the system, and it sounds like yours meets that requirement.
Unfortunately, I don't think it works with Windows 7.  If you happen to have an older PC with 32-bit Windows, you can use that PC to run the utility on the shuffle.  Or, maybe you have a friend with a Mac or 32-bit Windows PC that can run it for your.  Or, if you have an Apple Store nearby, you can make a reservation at the Genius Bar and ask them to look at it and run the reset utility.
The second suggestion, if you don't have a convenient way to use the reset utility, is to use Windows to reformat the shuffle's storage like it was a flash drive.  Use a "full" format (not the "quick" option).  Use the "FAT" format type.  Make sure iTunes is NOT running.  After it is reformatted, it will be blank.  When you run iTunes, it should recognize the shuffle and ask you to Restore it (to re-install the software and set it to default settings).  Hopefully, it will work this time.

  • Can (2)1st & (2) 2nd gen shuffles be on same computer and same itunes

I currently have 2 1st gen shuffles - other kids wanted ipods so i got them the 2nd gen shuffles. My concern is will the software for the 2nds' be compatable with the 1sts'. If not will it be possible to have two different versions of itunes installed on the same computer. I don't want to give up the 1st gen. One's mine and I gotta have my music!!!! I tried looking up the answer everywhere on Apples wonderful support site. No help, so I am asking you fine people out there who have purchased Apples products and then been left to wonder in the dark.
    dell pc   Windows XP

The current version of iTunes supports all currently available iPods; if you want to transfer different music to each iPod, see this article for information.

  • 2nd gen Shuffle gets unmounted by iTunes 7.5.0.20 (doesn't sync) workaround

My cousin recently gave me his Shuffle because it was not working for him on his XP Pro machine. He bought a new Nano.
I have used the separate "iPod reset utility" to restore my Shuffle. The first time that iTunes sees it, when you assign a name, if I let it select songs it will sync. Every time after, it will not sync!
_When iTune recognizes the configured Shuffle, it dismounts it! Windows no longer sees it as a writable USB device and you get the no device error._
_I turned off the iPod service that launches iTunes so I could plug it in without iTunes dismounting it. I placed a .txt file on the root of the Shuffle. I keep this file open and launch iTunes. This makes it impossible for iTunes to dismount the drive._
_The drive still being mounted, iTunes can write to it again. Once you're done syncing simply close the .txt file and eject it from iTunes._
_NOTE: iTunes attempts to dismount it like mad, so you'll see it go from green (dismounted) to orange (mounted) after iTunes is launched and after every sync. Windows doesn't allow it however._
I don't know why iTunes dismounts the drive in the first place, but if it's attempting to remount for the sync it's failing. I believe this is a bug in iTunes or the way it works with Windows.
Any comments or feedback is welcome. I've tried the following fixes already. USB driver reinstall, .dll registration, iPod reset.

I found a more elegant solution.
I use the .txt file to keep the Shuffle mounted so I can change the Settings on it. I activate "Enable disk use" but leave all the storage to the song side. Then apply the changes.
This tells iTunes to stop trying to dismount the drive, you just need to remember to eject it (if you're going to do things properly). You then don't need the .txt file anymore and it works great!
So we've gone from making iTunes unable to dismount the drive, to just having iTunes not try in the first place.

  • I have a 2nd gen  shuffle. i had to get a new computer and downloaded V11. my itunes works but i CANNOT sync to my shuffle. any ideas????

i have a 2nd gen  shuffle. i had to get a new computer and downloaded V11. my itunes works but i CANNOT sync to my shuffle. any ideas????

The latest iTunes may hide the sidebar by default.  To show the sidebar, from the iTunes menu bar, under View, select Show Sidebar.
With the sidebar visible on the left side of the iTunes window, when you connect the shuffle, does it appear in the sidebar, under DEVICES?
Since this is a 2nd gen shuffle, are you using the original USB cable that came with the shuffle, with the mini-dock at the shuffle end?  A USB cable that is for the 3rd or 4th gen shuffle will not work; the connector is different.

  • 2nd gen shuffle won't play podcasts after upgrading to Itunes 7.2(34)

I use my shuffle to listen to podcasts only. Last week afer upgrading Itunes it stopped playing and the LED would flash alternating green and orange. I did the 5 R's apple recommends and it still would not work. I even downloaded Apple's Ipod Reset Utility, it still would not work. I took it to the Genius Bar at the apple store because it is only 3 months old and they gave me a new shuffle. After returning home and trying to sync the new shuffle to my podcasts it had the same problem as the previous shuffle. This got me to thinking it was something besides the shuffle. The only thing I could think of was the new version of Itunes. So I tried to put other things on there besides podcasts. I added itunes store bought music, both drm and drm free, mp3 and aac music that I ripped in itunes before and mp3 and aac podcasts that I have downloaded. The shuffle played all the music but skipped over the podcasts. Please help. I was able to play these podcasts before on the shuffle so the file type is not an issue. I can play the podcasts on my video Ipod. I can even play them on the shuffle via itunes when it is connected to my computer. I don't know what to do and I am seriously falling behind on my podcasts. Any tips would be appreciated

Hello FrayedSo, Sorry to read your having a difficult time with your shuffle and podcasts.
As you mentioned earlier this is your second shuffle and it is able to play songs you purchase or put onto it but it skips past the Podcasts.
Are you playing these podcasts as part of a Playlist? or is this happening in shuffle mode?
Some of the things you could do to possibly assist with troubleshooting your issue are below.
Make sure to Consolidate your iTunes Library so all your information is backed up to your iTunes Music folder. You can do this by going to Advanced-Consolidate Library.
To quote a part in Knowledge Base 30058
"Playing Audiobooks and podcasts on iPod shuffle
When iPod shuffle is set to shuffle songs it will play all the audio files on iPod shuffle that are not audiobooks. Podcasts of type .m4b or AAC will not play on iPod shuffle when it is in shuffle mode, which is the intended behavior, although a podcast of type .mp3 or .wav may play while in shuffle mode. To play an audiobook or podcast that is on iPod shuffle, set the switch on iPod shuffle to play in order."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300558
Another thing you could try. Create a new user account on your Windows System and download some podcasts and sync it to your shuffle and see if the same issue occurs.

  • 2nd gen Shuffle not syncing blinks green and orange

My mom got a new computer. I installed Itunes and connected her 2nd gen Shuffle which previously had been administrated by her niece's computer. I deleted all music, restored to factory settings, bought new music but am unable to get music on her shuffle. Her shuffle appears in Itunes sidebar and in computer. Says it is syncing but no music is on Shuffle. Light blinks green and orange, green, orange. Troubleshoot says "current user not administrator". I followed steps in relevant topics but still no music on Shuffle. HELP
