ITunes not recognizing iPod Classic; tried many solutions but none seem to work

Dear Apple Support Community,
I just dug up my 6 year old iPod Classic from the grave and would like to start using it again as my HTC's headphone jack is extremely faulty lately. My iPod Classic is completely empty - I have no music, no photos, nor videos on it.
My problem is that on my Windows 8 Laptop, Windows is able to read the iPod, however, iTunes cannot. I went over to the Support page and tried almost every recommended solution out there, and nothing seems to work.
I have:
Tried different USB ports
Performed a Restore/Recovery after selecting 'Format' from Windows ExplorerIt is interesting to note that, whilst iTunes doesn't read the iPod normally, it did show up in the button (Spotlight button?) next to the iTunes button when performing a Restore
Uninstalled and Reinstalled every Apple application and program from my Laptop, including iTunes, Mobile Support, Bonjour, and more, and also, deleting any remaining folders related to Apple.
I have tried alternatives to iTunes such as CopyTrans and Syncios, but all seem to fail.
Troubleshooted my iPod various times
Restarted any Apple related Service as well as any Processes from Task Manager
Searched for Updates on Device manager -> Apple Driver and everything is up to date
It's worth pointing out that:
When opening the iPod folder in Windows Explorer (after enabling Hidden Folders), inside the 'iPod_Control' folder, there is no 'Music' folder; not sure if this is intentional or simply because there is no music file on my iPod.
The Software Version (which displays prior selecting 'Restore') is 2.0.1. If this is outdated, the option to Update Software is greyed out and unavailable.
My iTunes is up to date.
iTunes does tend to freeze up when attempting to read the device, but is perfectly fine after a while, it just does not display the device (implying it must have failed to detect it).
It is the first time using iTunes on this laptop (laptop is 4 months old), and has never had an Apple Device connected to it before.
iPod and iTunes used to work fine 6 years ago on a different PC which is no longer at me.
If anyone could shed some light on this problem, I would greatly appreciate it. Please do not hesitate for any further information related to both iPod or Laptop.

  • Hey you all, I have recently updated me iPhone 5 to iOS 7.1 and I checked my reminders built in app, and it seems like everything I had in there was lost. I have tried many things, but none seems to work. I can no longer add in any remainders.

Have you failed to regularly backup the device to iTunes or iCloud?  If so, the data is gone.
If there are backups, restore the most current one from prior to the data disappearing.

  • ITunes not recognizing iPod Classic

Ok, so this post is going to be a little long since I need to explain what is happening with my iPod Classic 160gb.
I noticed a few days ago that songs were 'disappearing' on my iPod when I would listen to it through iTunes on my computer (When I say disappearing an exclamation mark would appear between the song number and the song title in iTunes-- when I would try to start the song iTunes would automatically skip to the next song-- acting as if the song wasn't there). I disconnected the iPod after I was done listening, shut down the computer and turned off my iPod.
The next day I started up my computer and plugged in my iPod. Windows came up and said that it recommended a disk scan. I ok'd the scan. Afterwards, all of the songs had disappeared off my iPod and now iTunes doesn't recognize my iPod. Windows recognizes the iPod-- itunes does not.
**As a side note, in the iPod menu, in settings, the window on the right hand side of the screen show about 37GB of free memory. This was about how much was left with all my music on the iPod. However, if you go into any other menu, eg songs/artist/playlist it says there is no music/artist/playlists.
I've gone through all of the troubleshooting steps listed for the iPod classic and windows 7. iTunes is still not recognizing the iPod. I've also tried on another computer-- stil no luck.
I understand that the classic cannot be reset without iTunes (this is a stroke of brilliance on Apple's part). What can be done if after all of the troubleshooting steps iTunes STILL does not recognize my iPod? Has this iPod given up the ghost?
    Thanks, Mike

    Hello there,
I would first start with this article assuming you are running Windows. Be sure to attempt each and every possible troubleshooting procedure as needed to try and resolve the issue.

  • ITunes not recognizing iPod Classic 6th Gen

Hi, here's hoping somebody can help with this problem.
My iPod has 105GB of music on it and it works fine but within the last few days has kept requesting me to run a disk check to fix files which I've done but it does not connect to iTunes.
After running disk check it reports that files are fixed but clicking on details, it reports that volume created on 15/09/2014 refers to a disk that appears to be a non-windows XP disk!
I would certainly appreciate some help in trying to sort this problem out.
    With thanks, Brian.

    Hi brianfrombourne end,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
It sounds like your iPod is working but is not recognized by iTunes or your computer.
I recommend starting with these two articles to troubleshoot the issue:
iPod appears in Windows but not in iTunes
iPod not recognized in 'My Computer' and in iTunes for Windows
    From:
    iPod not appearing in iTunes
These articles have a lot of good steps that can help, whether your iPod is not showing up in iTunes or Windows.

  • Itunes not recognizing ipod classic, windows does, help

I have an ipod classic that has not had new music installed on it for over a year. I have vista 64, vista recongnizes it itunes does not. I checked connection to itunes with my sons itouch and it works fine. I have done everything i can think of through apple support except buy support including uninstalling itunes, quicktime, etc.. and reinstalling, did not work. I installed itunes on a clean version of xp on another computer, with the same results. I have put ipod in disk mode, itunes still does not recognize it. what else is there to do? format ipod? will this help?
Thank You in advance, grandpa will be very please to have new music to listen to.

Hmmm. If no iTunes is recognising it, it might be worth trying a disk check on the iPod itself. Select both Automatically fix file system errors and Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors:
[Check your hard disk for errors|http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-vista/Check-your-hard-disk-fo r-errors]
Does the disk check find/repair any damage? If so, can you get (at least) enough recognition to do a restore in iTunes?

  • HT201263 Argh! My iPod touch isn't showing the charging screen when I plug it in. I've tried several articles, but none seem to work! What do i do? I don't want my iPod to die. It's worth over $350

does anyone know wshat i should do? or a place in ep, tx to fixit?

    - See:
    iPod touch: Hardware troubleshooting
    - Try another cable. Some 5G iPods were shipped with Lightning cable that were either initially defective or failed after short use.
    - Try another charging source
    - Inspect the dock connector on the iPod for bent or missing contacts, foreign material, corroded contacts, broken, missing or cracked plastic.
    - Make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store.

I should add that this has never been Jailbroken. I keep reading that a lot of times this is the case for a jail broken phone.
I have also gone through the not very helpfull steps on apples site to fix this.. It is not a security issue since i dont have an antivirus or any 3rd party software for my computer.

  • Itunes not recognizing ipod touch, but recognizes ipod classic....?

This is my second time syncing my ipod touch and I've had my classic for forever and just use it to play in my car. I tried shutting down and it still did not work. Help? Thanks a bunch
Also...my computer recognizes both of them (Asus, Windows 7)

  • Itunes 11.1.5 not recognizing ipod classic 160gb

After updating itunes my ipod classic 160 gb is not recognized by itunes and now simply crashed...  any help please?

Well, my 3rd gen and 4th gen iPods from 2003/2004 (as well as my 1st gen iPod shuffle) still work fine with the latest iTunes, so Apple not supporting older devices is nonsense.  The owner DOES need to take care of them, so that they do not break.
If the iPod "crashed" and is not responding, the first thing to try is a Reset (restart)

  • Help!  Itunes not recognizing Ipod Nano.  Have tried several things already.

Itunes does not recognize my ipod nano (6th generation).  When I plug it in to the computer, nothing happens (except it charges).  I have tried several of the recommendations (reinstalling itunes, resetting ipod, etc. etc.)  I have Windows 7 on my computer with the latest version of Itunes.  Interestingly, when I plug my Ipod into my other computer (which still has an older version of Itunes), it syncs right up and is recognized.
What can I do to get Itunes to simply recognize my Ipod?  I am beyond frustrated.

  • ITunes 12 not recognizing iPod classic

I was having this problem and saw a LOT of discussion about it involving things like putting the iPod in disk mode, bad cables etc etc.  So I then tried hooking my iPhone up and it worked fine but had a lot of storage on it.  So I spent some time with a Map Ap cleaning it all up.  I disconnected it correctly from iTunes and then plugged my iPod back in.  Miraculously iTunes recognized it and synched it just fine.  I then disconnected it and waited a bit and hooked it up again and it STILL worked!!  A Miracle.  Please put this in all of the discussions on this topic because there is a lot of talk about this both at this site and on the Internet.

First off, you are right, it's a 32 gb I believe.
After several attempts and iTunes freezing up, I decided to switch out my sync cable to see if that would fix the problem.  It did!
So problem solved, I just switched out syncing cable and it worked fine.  Go figure.
    Thanks.

  • ITunes not recognizing iPod Video on my MacBook...any solution?

I have read similar problems but no replies. I have a new MacBook and iTunes doesn't recognize my 30GB iPod Video. All software is up to date. I have to reset the iPod and then it syncs. I am assuming it may be the iTunes version. Does anyone have a solution? Thanks in advance.

well i have gone through this discussion page ever since my mini broke back over thanksgiving break and in the other discussions we figured out that windows did one of their automatic updates which is blocking itunes from our ipods. some people have found fixes but none have worked for me. and i called the apple support MANY times and they give NO support. i was just about to buy the video ipod but now im kinda reconsidering since my mini isnt even working. but if you look at some of the other topics in this forum maybe one of these people's fixes could work for you, (they dont ALL work for EVERYBODY, but they could work for you.)

  • SOLUTION to iTunes not recognizing iPod

I was having a problem with itunes not loading my ipod under the source list...and it wasn't even in the preferences..it would say "no ipod connected" and I noticed NUMEROUS other people were having the SAME problem!
I was so frustrated after hours and hours of trying different things..and uninstalling and reinstalling the programs NUMEROUS times..
While filling out the service form I decided to try ONE MORE THING...it worked...
here's how I did it..(make sure your ipod is attached to your computer)
    - open itunes
    - go to file
    - then, export song list or library (either one)
    - find "my computer"
    - find the drive that ipod is in....it won't say..but mine was "J"
    - select the drive.
    - it'll say that it needs to be formatted
    - allow it to format..
and BAM! the ipod showed up in the source list on itunes RIGHT AWAY...
Hopefully this works for others like it worked for me! that would be great!
      Windows XP

4georgia: allow it to format; I'm pretty sure it's just giving you a heads up that if you had anything stored on our ipod, that it would erase it.
abbottg: glad to hear it was a success!
as for the other two posts: Did you try it anyway to see if it was on one of your drives? Because after a couple of times I would plug my iPod into my computer, the computer would not recognize it anymore. But it still would work. If not; then good luck! I know how frustrating it is
