  • Help!  Itunes not recognizing Ipod Nano.  Have tried several things already.

Itunes does not recognize my ipod nano (6th generation).  When I plug it in to the computer, nothing happens (except it charges).  I have tried several of the recommendations (reinstalling itunes, resetting ipod, etc. etc.)  I have Windows 7 on my computer with the latest version of Itunes.  Interestingly, when I plug my Ipod into my other computer (which still has an older version of Itunes), it syncs right up and is recognized.
What can I do to get Itunes to simply recognize my Ipod?  I am beyond frustrated.

I've already syncd music to ipod several times, now iTunes is telling me to "restore" only option that is available. iPod will not restore, I kept getting error message 1418 (?) before this iPod was being charged on another computer, after it was charged, all songs were gone? Now this...
I've already tried all that was suggested, reseting, etc...problem though, iPod was bought as a gift in the states and we live out here in American Samoa

  • ITunes not recognizing your nano?  Here's a possible solution!

I spent 6 hours trying to get itunes to recognize my nano the first time and none of the "troubleshooting" tips worked. I was getting the message "the software to connect with your ipod is not installed properly" when I'd try to connect my nano. Windows was recognizing it, but iTunes wasn't. Here's how I solved the problem.
    1. click on the start button in the lower left corner.
    2. select Settings and click Control Panel
    3. select Administrative Tools (you may need to switch to "Classic Look", located on the left hand side if you're using XP before you can see the Administrative Tools folder)
    4. select Services
    5. scroll down the list of services on the right hand side of the Services window and look for iPodService
    6. look across the iPodService for the Startup Type column (it should will say either Automatic, Manual, or Disabled)
    7. double-click on whatever it has listed for iPodService under Startup Type (it will probably have Manual, or Disabled)
    8. a pop-up window will appear, under the General tab in the middle of the window will be a drop-down window, select Automatic
    9. click Apply
You should be good, to go from here. It worked for me. I recommend re-starting your computer, but it might not be necessary. After I switched iPodService to Automatic I haven't had a lick of trouble connecting my Nano.
    I hope this helps.

  • A little different - Computer & Itunes not seeing IPOD Nano

I will try to make this as brief as possible... This is very frustrating.
Just got a nano - Am trying to install on my computer... Have installed a mini & a shuffle already with no problem.
The Nano is not being seen as an ipod. It is showing as an "Apple Ipod USB Device" and I get messages about not being able to update File J whenever I plug my ipod into my computer.
Neither my computer or my itunes is recognizing it. It worked once... and I was able to use the ipod updater one time to update my nano.. Now, when I try to use the updater to restore, it just tells me to plug my ipod in. It is already plugged in??!!!
I have tried apples recommended 5 steps, reset, used a different USB, restarted & updated the programs, uninstalled & reinstalled itunes & ipod (big pain), the only step I can't do is Restore.
    I have 2 questions...
Is there a way to restore my ipod without the updater, or is there some other way for me to get my computer to recognize the new ipod. Still, if I plug in my mini, the computer & Itunes picks it right up, just not the nano...
What am I doing wrong. I don't have a laptop & I don't have "firewire"... and i have tried turning off all my antivirus stuff..>???
I am so frustrated, any help is welcome!!!

Thank you, and all the others, for supplying information on work arounds that may help all of us Nano owners to fix this significant problem. However, after spending more hours than I would like dealing with this issue, I would like to raise a couple of points. Hopefully, Apple will respond.
    1) An owner should not be forced to reformat his iPod's hard drive when carefully following Apple's procedure for making software updates. Testing of the updater program to see if it worked correctly on the popular Nano series should have revealed that it would erase all the iPod's content and cause the device to become unusable?
    2) What course should Nano owners follow in the future regarding iPod upgrades? Should we just ignore upgrade notifications or attempt the installation of the new software hoping that this time we will not be forced to re-initialize our iPods and reload our content?
This issue needs to be addressed. The iPod has been designed and marketed to be a very user friendly consumer product. This is one of the primary reasons it has become so successful. Updating it should not cause it to be turned into a complex device requiring the advice of computer technicians.
    Thanks for reading these thoughts.

  • ITunes not recognizing iPod Classic

Ok, so this post is going to be a little long since I need to explain what is happening with my iPod Classic 160gb.
I noticed a few days ago that songs were 'disappearing' on my iPod when I would listen to it through iTunes on my computer (When I say disappearing an exclamation mark would appear between the song number and the song title in iTunes-- when I would try to start the song iTunes would automatically skip to the next song-- acting as if the song wasn't there). I disconnected the iPod after I was done listening, shut down the computer and turned off my iPod.
The next day I started up my computer and plugged in my iPod. Windows came up and said that it recommended a disk scan. I ok'd the scan. Afterwards, all of the songs had disappeared off my iPod and now iTunes doesn't recognize my iPod. Windows recognizes the iPod-- itunes does not.
**As a side note, in the iPod menu, in settings, the window on the right hand side of the screen show about 37GB of free memory. This was about how much was left with all my music on the iPod. However, if you go into any other menu, eg songs/artist/playlist it says there is no music/artist/playlists.
I've gone through all of the troubleshooting steps listed for the iPod classic and windows 7. iTunes is still not recognizing the iPod. I've also tried on another computer-- stil no luck.
I understand that the classic cannot be reset without iTunes (this is a stroke of brilliance on Apple's part). What can be done if after all of the troubleshooting steps iTunes STILL does not recognize my iPod? Has this iPod given up the ghost?
    Thanks, Mike

    Hello there,
I would first start with this article assuming you are running Windows. Be sure to attempt each and every possible troubleshooting procedure as needed to try and resolve the issue.

  • How to prevent iTunes not recognizing iPod

After about 6 months with my iPod mini, I have had to re-install iTunes about 4 times. Symptoms: iPod shows up on the desktop but not in iTunes. Most times it has happened after updating software for iTunes or the iPod. This time it happened spontaneously. I have been successful each time by using the instructions at http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61937 but this is getting really old. Anyone have suggestions to prevent this?

Well one thing I can say is that apparently I am not alone. I got this Ipod nano for christmas and it doesn't work. My wife has a regular ipod so I already have the latest software. I plugged it in and it charged but the itune never opens automatically and it makes the wrong USB noise when you connect it.
After having a regular MP3 player that you can just drag songs to, this thing is a royal pain. I read through all the help and resetting screens and then read the forums but nothing helped. I packed the thing away and chalked it up to another expensive toy that doesn't work.
Next time I will just buy a regular MP3 player at half the cost and it will actually play music!

  • Very Frustrated with Itunes not recognizing iPod....

Worked after I first unpacked the unit and loaded the software, then all the sudden it stopped recognzing my iPod. Went through alll the trouble shooting steps. Reloaded the software, restored the iPod and all that crap....finally got it working again. Then I downloaded some music and a couple of TV shows. Hooked up my iPod and iTunes is not recognizing it AGAIN!!! Even though the iPod is showing the "do not disconnect" message for a short while.
    This is TOTALLY FRUSTRATING!
HELP before I drive to the iPod store cause a scene.
    Thanks!

The "Do Not Disconnect" meassage is normal when connected to the computer if the IPOD has been set to run in "Disk Mode". Read this first:
    Do Not Disconnect - http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61135
Are you "Dismounting" the IPOD from the Windows operating system before unplugging it? Simply "Ejecting" the IPOD from ITunes is not correct since the IPOD is set to disk mode.

  • Itunes not recognizing IPOD once it says "Synced, you can disconnect".

Hello, I just bought a IPOD NANO 8GB. I downloaded the latest iTunes and installed it.
As default it had "auto sync" when the IPOD is pluged. I deactivated it as I didn't want iTunes opening and syncing when I just plug the IPOD to charge.
Then I tried to sync manually and it said "Syncing" but then I got an error "No disk found...". I checked "auto sync" and it worked.
    OK, now, the problem:
When "auto syncing" it won't sync my videos. I clicked on the "Movies" tab and checked "Sync movies" but then I have to "apply" the changes and it won't recognize the IPOD and says "No disk found". It only recognizes it when opening ITUNES, then it will say "Synced, you can disconnect it" but if I disconnect it then it won't show the IPOD options so I can check "Sync movies".
I tried reinstalling it, and the 5 R. But it won't RESTORE as it can't find the IPOD.
    I need some help, please

Solved! I couldn't do it exactly as you said, but near:
    - Hit RESTORE. It will try to find the IPOD.
    - Unplug and plug the IPOD as fast as I can. It will finally RESTORE.
    - Then check "auto sync".
    - While it's adding my songs back to the IPOD check "sync movies", "sync pictures" and everything. (I checked everything like pictures, podcast... so if I need it in the future I don't have to do this trick again).
    - Finally it will add my movies to the IPOD!
This is not how it is suposed to work, but it worked.
I'm quite dissapointed. I've wanted an IPOD for years and when I finally get one I find out I have to use the horrible ITUNES software. I don't like it, it's huge, slow and don't work fine to me. It should be optional so you don't have to use "third party software" to do things you should be allowed to do with your MP3 player such as getting your songs back to your PC from your player.
But the good thing is that a lot of people is having trouble with IPOD + ITUNES but there's also a lot of people helping them (and me).
Thank you for your help, I hope I can enjoy my IPOD better now!
